From Windows:

Signature:
Error: APPCRASH
Application: x264.exe
Module: ffdshow.ax
Module version: 1.1.3882.0
OS: Win 7 x64 version 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48

Doesn't look like it's a problem with BD-RB but x264/Windows instead. If previous version of BD-RB (which included an earlier version of x264.exe too) works for you, why not re-install that to run this backup?

Because if there's a new version - old version no longer works. Doesn't look like it's a problem with BD-RB but recommended old ffdshow instead. Install the latest ffdshow instead recommended by the author and the problem goes away

Install the latest ffdshow instead recommended by the author and the problem goes away So you're working now? A good guess would be that it just needed to be reinstalled. Sometimes other software installations cause issues that can only be fixed by a reinstall.

A most peculiar bug with Miramax's A Quiet American. Did a Full Backup. Selecting Play Movie in Main Menu...

on Original Disc: Miramax logo is shown, followed by the movie.

on Backup: SMPTE color bars are shown for 35 seconds, followed by post-production company title screen describing the contents of the master tape. This is followed by the Miramax logo and the movie. I would have expected audio to be severely out-of-sync because of this, but no, audio sync is fine.

Movie is in file 00000.m2ts. Playing it with MPC-HC reveals that SMPTE color bars and master tape info text screen are both included in the 00000.m2ts. For some reason they are skipped on the original, but not on Full Backup.

@colinhunt

Hi!

As with EVERY Miramax release I can remember seeing, with the original, did it first show a Miramax opening screen, then the menu and upon "Play" selection an ADDITIONAL Miramax opening screen? Did your "Full Disc" backup do the same, or were the SMPTE color bars, followed by post-production company title screen describing the contents of the master tape the first Miramax opening screen substituted for that screen?

**EDIT** I knew this sounded familiar I made a similar (not identical) post in February 2011:

Downconverting 7.1 DTS(MA) to 5.1 .AC3 640

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

@jdobbs

I just did a full disc conversion of "Centurion" to BD9, using "Good" (Very fast) and "One-pass (CRF) settings - audio encoding options were left untouched, so that BD-RB performed a downconversion of the audio to 5.1AC3 640kbps.

While the original 7.1 DTS(MA) audio had (per tsMuxeR) an audio delay of 18,393ms, this delay disappeared somewhere in the downconversion, so that the playback was grossly (18+ seconds) out of synch.

The proof in the pudding was that using tsMuxeR to add a delay of 18,393ms to the primary audio of the main compressed .M2TS file eliminated the problem.

The reason for the original delay appears to be due to an initial rather mysterious SILENT 18 second static display regarding "Technicolor Services" and details of the video and audio formats.
Reminiscent, if I remember correctly, of the structure of, "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo". Back in September, in your post #9531, you stated:
Quote:
I fixed the out-of-sync audio issue related to "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and the other similar discs. It'll be included in the next release.

But the "Tatoo" problem only affected the "movie-only" version, so perhaps this is something different...

Yes. You see Miramax logo twice before getting to the movie.

Full Backup: Miramax logo -> Main Menu / Play -> SMPTE color bars -> post-production company title screen -> Miramax logo -> movie.
Original: Miramax logo -> Main Menu / Play -> Miramax logo -> movie.

Learned a valuable lesson today. Before starting BD rebuilder, save any running documents. Because while I only allow 3/4 cores to run, somtimes the CPU spikes well beyond 75%. I resumed the encode when I woke up(it crashed). And watched it hover around 99% - 100%. I am and have been aware of a slight instability with my overclock. Which is part of why I only allow 3 cores out of 4. I guess the real lesson to be learned, is stabilize my clock :p

Finally got around to ordering "Hobo with a Shotgun" so I can test out the sync issue you reported. I should be getting it in the next couple of days. I'll let you what I find.

I can't seem to find a blu-ray version of "The Quiet American" for sale at any of the standard places (like Amazon)... where'd you get it? I'm thinking it may not have been released in the U.S. yet.

It's from Amazon.com... but I checked after reading your post, and can't find it there any longer. It's possible Miramax has recalled the disc because the authoring appears to be a bit messed up. Not only does the movie file contain the extra bits at the beginning, there are also odd extra bits after the movie. It's like the authoring shop has delivered a work-in-progress version to the factory. False alarm, in other words!

Remember this:)

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>c:\accessories\BD_Reb\tools\wavi.exe "D:
\BD REB WORK FOLDER\WORKFILES\AUD_00001_4352.AVS" - | c:\accessories\BD_Reb\tool
s\aften.exe -v 1 -b 640 -readtoeof 1 - "D:\BD REB WORK FOLDER\WORKFILES\AUD_00001_4352.AC3"

Question, when the HD audio is converted into PCM by WAVI.exe, can I assume it's buffered to some degree
before it is fed into Aften.exe. If so, the memory allocation size, temporary destination and transfer rates between programs across the pipe, are those parameters set by BD reb code or determined dynamically by windows?

If so, the memory allocation size, temporary destination and transfer rates between programs across the pipe, are those parameters set by BD reb code or determined dynamically by windows? It's actually converted to PCM by AVISYNTH via NicAudio.dll. If there is buffering it would be inherent to the pipe and is likely very, very small. BD-RB doesn't set it. The output of WAVI is simply streamed to AFTEN.

You can break that up into two commands, first WAVI and then AFTEN, for example:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>c:\accessories\BD_Reb\tools\wavi.exe "D:
\BD REB WORK FOLDER\WORKFILES\AUD_00001_4352.AVS" test.wav

c:\accessories\BD_Reb\tool
s\aften.exe -v 1 -b 640 test.wav "D:\BD REB WORK FOLDER\WORKFILES\AUD_00001_4352.AC3"

Thanks JD, I'm going to run the job again this time as a movie only to save a little time. Once it gets to the point where aften fails, I'll split the commands and paste the first half into the cmd prompt after making the appropriate changes in path and file name if necessary.

If I read right AUD_00001_4352.AVS" test.wav will be generated in the work folder.

edited....

OK I realized I don't need to wait for the video encode to test it since the A/V streams were extracted and AUD_00001_4352.AVS exists as a valid file in the workfiles folder and I would be essentially waiting for the audio.bat file to be created.

Inputting into the cmd window :

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>
c:\accessories\BD_Rebuilder\tools\wavi.exe "D:\BD REB WORK FOLDER\WORKFILES\AUD_
00001_4352.AVS" test.wav
'C:\Documents' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.

And if I remove the "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>" so it isn't referenced twice in the path, this happens and results in wavi.exe being overwritten or corrupted.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>c:\accessories\BD_Rebuilder\tools\wavi.e
xe "D:\BD REB WORK FOLDER\WORKFILES\AUD_00001_4352.AVS" test.wav
Access is denied.

Unless I'm completely in left field, am I wrong to think it fails before the pipe?

Looks like the Blu-ray version of "The Quiet American" was released on 9/19/11 in the UK (Amazon UK):

I do buy from US, UK, DE and FR Amazons but I'm fairly certain this one didn't come from UK... although yeah, I could be wrong.

edit: Yup, my mistake, it's the UK version.

Im not sure if this is a bug or a feature request, so feel free to move it if necessary.

When you're backing up a rip that has some pixelation (ie data stream errors), BDRebuilder produces backups that freeze at the point of original data stream error.

I understand that you can't overcome missing data, but if the errors are at the beginning of the movie, BDRebuilder continues until the very end without reporting errors. If the end result is going to be unplayable, then it would be better to exit at the point of error, and save x hours of encoding.

A better solution would be to somehow drop the frames that are causing the problem, so the end result is still playable (albeit with some jumps), but that's a feature request if the funtionality isn't in the current design spec.

I should point out that most of my BDs are second hand and have the odd scratch or two on the data side. New discs pose no problem. I've noticed that BDs are much more prone to any kind of dirt than DVDs. I don't think it's my BD reader(s) as they all echo the same trend.

FYI. I've tried products like TSDoctor, and VideoReDo on damaged rips, but so far I've not managed to fix a single rip (these products are still in beta). The original rips will play with a bit of pixelation, and you can get to the end of the movie, so the streams aren't that far gone. Not sure what the ultimate solution is apart from just buying another BD.

@KillingTime

I've never experienced that problem, and I've done an extremely large number of discs. Unfortunately, though, even if I wanted to address it, there's really not a lot I could do. I can't even think of a way I could intervene and even know that the error is there. The actions taken during decoding (frame serving) and encoding are really something out of BD Rebuidler's control. The frame serviing is done by AVISYNTH, FFDSHOW and HAALI, and the encoding is done by X264.

I guess the bottom line is that when you feed garbage in -- you are going to get garbage out. It's just a question of what kind of garbage.

I was trying to do full back-up to Transformers 3 With Keep HD is on. the result is that the audio is 2 out of sync from chapter 3. this is really weird becuse the movie starts O.K but after few chapter the audio start to slip up.
the Movie was ripped by anyDvd.
i also tried to keep all audio stream (not just the True HD one) with the same result.
by now i did dozens of movie with no problems. this is my first problem for a long time.
using 39.01 latest version

the True HD is very importent to me thats why i want to keep it untouched.
THANKS I have that movie and I'll do some testing. But I'm pretty sure I've backed it up without any issues. What are you using to play it back?

I did a full backup to BD-25 of Transformers 3, kept the HD audio, and the audio was perfectly in sync. This was region 1 for me. :cool:
Was there pre-processing? Was the blanking option used? :confused:

@aquanash

Finally got around to ordering "Hobo with a Shotgun" so I can test out the sync issue you reported. I should be getting it in the next couple of days. I'll let you what I find. This is definitely a weird one. I'm not having the exact same problem as you (sync issues) -- but definitely a problem. I can't get either DirectshowSources() or NicAudio to recognize the demuxed audio stream.

I did Hobo to BD25,BD5 and DVD5 and had no sync issues with any. WinXP with LAVF always selected.

I do the full backup of TF3 perfectly, the only difference with my backup is i do it without the HD Audio (Core only, i never preserve the HD audio), seems like you have an issue with the tools required for bdrebuilder, the first backup i do with bdrebuilder was TF2 and i find the same issue that you describe (sync issue with the second audio track, in that backup i preserved the HD audio, because that was my first backup and i created only for test purposes, another issue with that backup was a pixelation i some scene changes, like 5 times during the movie), all that problems were solved with a fresh install of the tools and unistalling codec packs.

Cheers!

jdobbs did you get my post? Yeah. I don't own "Lion King" yet and frankly my donations aren't even coming close to covering my losses in purchases... and I'm having trouble justifying any more "only for testing" buys. I bought three new movies for testing this week alone (none of which were movies I personally wanted) -- and have to balance that against a single donation that doesn't even cover one of them.

So I'm not sure how long it will be before I can test it. In the meantime I guess I can look at the code and see if I can find an error in my sizing algorithms. But that's about all I can do. Sorry.

Oh no problem at all ^_^. I didn't know if there were too many posts and you missed mine by accident! For these testing only backup that you need to confirm, why don't you just go to blockbuster and rent them to test and return the bluray? I know this is "pirating" but it's not like you're distributing these back up and making a profit, you're just using your wits but do not have the financial to do so. I don't think it make sense for you to buy everyone's failed backup and testing them because that is absurd, and cost a ridiculous amount of money!

I have run across an issue, that I know was reported a few months back, where subtitles are always on. I was making a "Movie & Menus Backup" of Star Trek VI to a BD-25 and the completed backup has subtitles on even though they are set to off. I looked at those older posts but I didn't see if any resolution to the issue had been found. Was there any resolution to this issue, or would you like me to provide additional info to help track it down? If it hasn't been resolved I'd be happy to make more back-ups to see if it helps.

Jdobbs its ok np.. That just my 2 cents. Do you think it has something to do with it detecting dif frames in that bluray? I have noticed before when I did a backup with usually 3 audio track(commentaries and main) it goes over to 110%, then at the end it come to 100%.

@ xterminater n RE: It came out to 8.89GB ... All my other back up were fine beside this one, and other one was oversized too! But we'll take care of this one first!

Thanks To: omegaman7's post (http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1530828&postcount=13211)
I've noticed with some Blu Ray discs, the output size is sometimes smaller than ~22.5Gb by about the same size I've blanked. E.g. blank 1Gb, and it's 21.5Gb. So yes, the output size is somewhat erratic. However, I find it to be within reason. Ones that I've blanked, with NO_REENCODE, and then rerun through Bd-rebuilder, yield a better output size. Haven't tried star wars. I'm a trekkie :S

I had replied that I was getting consistantly undersized or oversized output also using Movie & Menus & Backup mode. I started doing like omegaman7 suggested. Run Movie & Menu mode with target set at 50,000. This results in keeping the original video, no recode, and only takes about 20 or 30 minutes to finish. Then run it back thru BD_Rebuilder in full backup and set to whatever you originally targeted for the size of your backup. This has worked for me and always gets really close to the target I set for 24,200 size. I always get 98% or 99% of the BD-R disk full. It works great and it's worth the extra 20 minutes to not spend hours getting undersized or especially OVERSIZED output. Many thanks to jdobbs for this great peice of kit, and thanks to omegaman7 for his tip.

@ Chuckwagon RE: Subtitles Always On - Was this resolved?
I seem to get this problem at times where BD_RB changes the order of the subs that are kept and turned on in the finished encode. The last one I did was, "A Better LIfe", which had the #1 English sub turned on. Instead the disk played the always on screen #2 sub. I don't know why the order of the subs were changed but if you run the finished encode back thru BD_RD again and select the #2 sub as the one turned on it will only take 20 minutes to fix the problem. Good Luck, worknstiff

I had to add some new code for adjusting sizing prediction as parts are blanked/unblanked. I'd bet the problem is there. I doubt that the audio selection is the problem since that's been unchanged for quite some time. I'll fix it.

I previously reported that True Blood season 3 had this issue on full backups to BD9, which I believe you confirmed. The problem did not happen on movie only backups to BD5/9 though.

I guess that's why I said "seem to remember"... so that's why I had that disc sitting on my hard drive. ;) You say I repeated it? Hmmm...

[Edit] I just went back through the threads. There was a problem with DTS decoding on True Blood (which I fixed via DirectshowSource), but I don't see where I could repeat a problem with subtitles. I'm not even sure how that could happen since they are simply demuxed and remuxed (unless resized).

You could try, A Better Life, in Movie only BD9, set 2nd ENG sub to on and it will end up with 1st ENG sub on.

I was able to figure out what was happening, at least with this disc. It turns out that subtitles are always on, there isn't really a "none" choice, even though that choice exists in the "settings" menu on the disc. There are 3 English subtitle tracks on the disc, and when "none" is selected, the disc is really using the 3rd English subtitle track, which only has subs for when an alien language is being translated, like when a Klingon is speaking.

On my setup BDRB is only keeping 1 subtitle track for each language (is that the default setting, I can't remember) and in this case, since the disc seems to force subs on all the time, the one it keeps is the one that always has text for all the speaking parts. If the 3rd track is manually selected instead of the 1st one, then things behave "normally." So for this disc, the solution would be to keep at least those two subs tracks instead of only one for English.

I don't know if this solution works for the other discs that have shown similar behavior, but it seems worknstiff also may have seen a similar solution, where it's just a matter of which sub track the movie would normally be forcing on, one that has text all the time vs one that only subs intermittently.

So my issue is resolved, but I don't know if this fixes the other's subs always on issues.

is 18.6 GB considered an undersize concern? The original video was 33 GB (target BD-25). Settings was on auto and it did (easy) but two passes. This was VC-1, I think I did another VC-1 BD a month ago and it also outputed 18.6 GB.

So my issue is resolved, but I don't know if this fixes the other's subs always on issues. Thanks for the analysis and feedback. Now it makes complete sense. When subtitles are removed, the references to them aren't actually removed -- only the subtitle stream itself. In order to prevent "goofy" behaviour (by BD-J or pre/post commands), the references to removed streams are kept intact but are all modified to point to the first kept subtitle stream. So when yours tries to turn on title 3 -- it's actually turning on title 1.

While it's completely legal to do it that way, the more common method is to have a single stream of subtitles -- but set the "force on" flag for instances that are required (like foreign languages such as Klingon). That's probably the reason this happens so rarely. I personally never see it because I always keep all subtitles.

Unfortunately there's really no way I can think of to know when this is being done.

If it reencodes and comes out to 18.6GB -- yes, it is a concern. If it says "keeping original video" and comes out small then no, because it is simply using the original video size and the undersize is due to removed tracks. If I understand correctly yours is reencoding. That means there is a problem.

@xterminater

When you did the movie-and-menus backup of "Lion King" did you use the blanked selections set by BD-RB, or did you do any additional blank/unblank editing?
