I had an LG Blu-ray burner fail on me after only 5 months. I blame most of on burning at Max speed though. Burn at 4x to get great value out of your drive.
I always burn at 2x....but I fear it is my burner, went to office max, and picked up a three pack of Verbatim came home backed up The Last Airbender and it skips as well....that is four in a row, they all play fine until the 40 to 45 minute mark then the picture will pause and skip ahead 30-45 seconds....if I leave the display up on the screen it continues to count while the picture is paused, then the picture will jump ahead to where the counter is....I have a two year warranty from Dell, but don't know if they will cover that.

@humphammer

Hi!

Have you tried running a cleaning disc on your player and/or burner?

@humphammer

Hi!

Have you tried running a cleaning disc on your player and/or burner?

No I have not....it is not my player, I have three including the kids PS3 and the discs skip at the same spots on all three players....I thought it was bad media, but I purchased new today, and it does the same thing....I'll try cleaning the burner, I got it for fathers day this year, and did over 30 back-ups with zero problems....now have done four in a row from two different batches of Verbatim BD-R 25GB that skip regardless of what you play them in.

@humphammer, Are you a smoker? I was once upon a time. I fear that is what ultimately killed my first NEC drive. Optical technology doesn't like Cigarette smoke...
Thankfully, february makes 2 years without smoking :D Saves me money to buy things I like. E.g. Computer hardware :p

Just throwing this out there but I just did Resident Evil and while previewing the original BD disk, I got to the elevator scene and it started breaking up really bad. I finally ejected the disk but when I put it back in there was a copy protection error when it tried to play. I unplugged the player and waited a minute before plugging it up. The disk now plays but when it gets to the elevator scene it breaks up agian. When I ripped the disk I had no problems and I was afraid that the BD_RB recode was going to crash but it finished with no problems and plays perfectly. When I was playing the original disk the 24P playback was activated, and now I wonder if the disk was slightly damaged just enough to throw off the framerate and make it break up. Just out of curiosity what happens when you use BD_RB that leaves out the 24P playback information?

No, my wife is but NEVER smokes in the house....good you quit wish I could get her to, but nicotine is a powerful drug. I have an old DVD burner that between backing up my DVD collection and converting years of home movies from VHS tape to DVD has probably burned over 1,000 discs and I have never cleaned it, nor had a problem.

Hi Guys, I am very new at this video encoding subject and have been playing with BD Rebuilder for a couple of weeks.

Firstly maybe a few words about my hardware:

Computer used for encoding: Intel quad core Q9400
Burner: Pioneer

Player: HTPC (Intel i3 powered) running Arcsoft Total Media Theatre 3
Player: Pioneer
Server: Server 2008R2 serving videos to above HTPC

Ripping Software: Anydvd

Although I have successfully backed up a few BDs I am finding some strange problems:

Currently I have been backing up each BD disc three ways: BD25, BD9 for storing on a server for playback via the HTPC, BD5 for storing on a regular DVD

The BD25 is a full disc backup. BD9 also a full disc backup. BD5 is a movie only backup.

Generally the BD5s work very well.

The BD25s work well, although just now I have tried to do a backup of The A Team and I get a mixture of English and German. The English contains a voice over which reads the stars names etc. Occassionally the people seem to speak what sounds like German. At the beginning of the movie there is a preview for : Knight & Day, Wall Street 2 and someother movie about a runaway train. The sound for Knight & Day and Wall Street 2 is non existant.

The BD9 version of the backup will not display the main menu for the movie.

I have had a problem with the menus not working on a number of disks including Sex & The City 2, Legion, The Backup Plan. I have burnt the BD9 image onto a disc and this also does not show the menus when played through the Pioneer player.

Am I missing something???

Many thanks for your help in advance.

OK, I will give it a go since I'm just waiting for a response for my post above. If you are backing up to a BD-5 or even a BD-9 (Dvd+R or DVD+R DL) then BD_RB is converterting the video to AVCHD format, which really screws up the menu's and most of the HD audio streams in order to get it down to a manageable size. You really need to do a movie only when using BD_RB to fit onto this kind of disk. Doing a "Full Backup" to a BD-25 will pretty much make a complete backup of the whole disk but sometimes depending on the kind of java menus and the secondary HD audio and video streams it creates problems with different STB (set top box) players. It is a "CF" that is a constantly changing battlefield because of the encryption and also the firmware that is ever evolving because of it. I have for the most part had no problems just doing Movie Only to BD-9's but I see reports from others about audio issues and blocky output. My encoding computer is not used for anything else and is not being used while its busy encoding and seems to do fine, I wonder if these other problems are from people multitasking while encoding? Good luck with your projects, I can't really help with the streaming server stuff, don't use it. seeya worknstiff

Just out of curiosity what happens when you use BD_RB that leaves out the 24P playback information? I'm not sure what you mean by "leaves out the 24P playback information". If I understand correctly you're talking about a player setting -- which should have no effect on BD-RB.

I have come across a problem. This has happened on two different PC's one running Vista the other XP Pro. Tried two times on the XP Pro and then got the same results on the Vista one. Its the Die Another Day US disc from the volume one set. I have all the helper progams and settings as listed on the first post on both machines.

That's quite a life for a burner. I've had one like that, and I have two quickly approaching 1000 burns.

She'll quit one day. Circumstances were just right for me. ;) I haven't looked back :D

Quote: I'm not sure what you mean by "leaves out the 24P playback information". If I understand correctly you're talking about a player setting -- which should have no effect on BD-RB.
__________________When my player Panasonic DMP BDT-350 and other players play the original disks they always show 24P in the status on the TV, but when playing rebuilt disk I never see the 24P icon so I believe that the disk doesn't output 24P (24fps) or the TV would show it as such. Where does the disk store this framrate info?

Where does the disk store this framrate info? It's stored in the M2TS file as a part of the stream, it's stored in the CLPI file for each M2TS, and it's stored in the MPLS file that might reference multiple MPLS files.

The only time it might change would be on a 480i stream that is telecined and is not being inverse telecined or when you have selected to convert to 720p. All others are set exactly the same framerate as they are in the original. The only thing that might change would be the encoding (MPEG or VC-1 will be converted to AVC) -- but that doesn't affect the frame rate of "progressive/interlaced" status.

I want to backup all the Harry potter movies to main movie only. I've done this in the past, only to discover critical english subtitles were removed. E.g. Avatar, Hidalgo, 2012, etc. Were there any necessary English subtitles in the harry potter movies? I don't think there were, but I'm not sure. Is there a website that can tell me things like that?

You never know when the subtitles are meant to be "forced" when foreign languages are spoken in the film.

Well there's a problem LOL! I backed them all up to MKV 7.98Gb with Ripbot264 a while back. And didn't keep the subs. See, I don't recall any foreign languages being spoken. Now I want to convert them to dvd-5, and am uncertain if it's even worth doing. I guess I'll find out :S

My Sony BWU-200S has been burning BDs since I bought it back in 2008 -- at lease one a day and sometimes more... not a problem to date (other than an occasional screwup that is centered located between the keyboard and the chair).

I purchased yet another three pack of Verbatim BD-25GB's and backed up Ramona and Beezus, which was only 19.5 GB so BD Rebuilder didn't have to do it's thing....I got the same results this time after only 12 minutes into the movie and then intermittenly there after....so it has to be either the burner, or Imgburn....regardless that's five coasters in a row....guess I need to call Dell.

BTW anyone have any experience with Matsushita burners which I believe is what Dell uses?

Probably the burner then. I'd have um buy you new discs too. That's total BS! Assuming you're under warranty ;)

I think maybe that it only plays in 24P mode on real BD disks. When I backed up Avatar, I backed it up to BD-25 and it shows 24P playback but when burned to BD-9 AVCHD disk the 24P playback is not shown. I think maybe it is limited to BD only. 24P playback seems to have more color depth or sharpness it seems to me. thanks Jdobbs for the info and the great program, seeya worknstiff

I have one in my XPS M1530, and have been using it for two years and probably 125+ BD-R/RE, never had a problem.
Just 2x max write speed, which is slow by todays standards, but I am very pleased with it.

Hello,
I am having trouble getting Inception to finish converting.
BDRB re-encodes 29 files and fails on the 30th!
The log file claims that FFSHOW is set incorrectly on VID_00037, (which is actually the credits at the end of the film).

I have un-installed and re-installed ffdshow with no better results. I simply installed ffdshow with the default settings and this has worked fine for all my past conversions.

BTW, does anyone know why some BDs have one or two clips for the main film and others, like this one, have dozens?

Thanks for taking a look at this.

Hunter

BTW, does anyone know why some BDs have one or two clips for the main film and others, like this one, have dozens? When you have numerous parts, it's because there are numerous playback paths. Often you will find it is due to languages. For instance, you may have a page from a book or a computer screen show up in the movie -- in one playback path the display may be in English, while in another it might be German, Spanish or French. So at every point that there could be a different path, there are multiple M2TS/CLPI combinations that could fill a gap.

Typically when you select one playlist your are getting one path sequence, but it might include dozens of parts.

@jdobbs

Every once in a while I use my iPod to watch a movie (mainly with my EZ Vision video glasses when traveling). I thought I'd try BD-RB to convert The Expendables.

Clicked Mode > Movie Only Backup > Alternate Movie-Only Output > and selected iPod MP4, 320x240/180,64Kbs AAC. I did not change any default settings (i.e. Standard Output was unchecked; CRF at 20 was checked; and 2-pass Bitrate Encoding was unchecked). After the successful encode I checked playback with Quicktime player (played great) then imported into my iTunes and synched my iPod. Although it plays in iTunes it will not synch to my model iPod. I usually convert using AVS VC 7 and the resulting m4v file always synchs to my iPod. If possible, I would prefer to use BD-RB for this type of conversion. Any chance you could make this happen for those of us with these earlier model iPods?

Here's the specs for my model (very common earlier model according to apple support guy):

iPod 5th Generation (Late 2006)
Model: 30 to 80 GB

Display: 320 by 240 pixel resolution, .156-mm dot pitch

Audio formats supported: AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3 and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF and WAV.

Video formats supported: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Low-Complexity Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48 kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.

Any help would be grealty appreciated. Happy Holidays :thanks:

I'm running "The Expendables" now with those settings. I have an iPod Touch and a 30GB 5th Gen... I'll test it on both when it completes. Happy Holidays back at you -- and "go Chaminade" (my alma mater)...

Well, some file is missing... all I can say is try it again.
Happened again, same error on this title BD->DVD (movie only/alternate output/DVD5). BD50->BD25 full disc backup worked flawlessly.

It failed on my 5th Gen also, but worked on the iPod Touch. I think I know what it is (wrong level) -- I'll fix it, test it, and you should see it in another version soon.

Oh, that makes sense, thanks.

So, any idea why 29 files should re-encode fine while the 30th (and last) file gets this error? How is ffdshow set incorrectly? Is this set in the INF somewhere? I would really like to learn something.

Happy Holidays :thanks:I think the spec you're quoting is for the iPOD Classic. Based on what the Apple site says, the 5th Generation H.264 has a maximum bitrate of 768Kbs (as opposed to 1.5Mbs) and the video is limited to 320x240 (see this link (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP41)).

I may have to set up a special profile for this... as I'd hate to put the 768Kbs/320x240 limit on any of the newer models.

There are just too many iPod models with too many different specs. Consistency has never been Apple's strongest attribute. They also have the slowest website on the planet.

Anyway -- I got it working. I've made it so 320x240/180 and 480x360/270 each has a max bitrate of 768 (to support earlier models), 640x480/360 has a max bitrate of 1500 (to match the intermediate models), and higher resolutions have a max bitrate of 2500 (to match newer models).

Hi there,

I have encountered a problem with LEGEND OF THE GUARDIANS 3D & 2D. I´m trying to make a BD-25 and the original is less than 40GB. However BDRebuilder reads "- Input BD size: 75.03 GB".

I don´t understand it since the original disc has only two layers (BD-50). Seems like it´s reading the size of the movie twice.

I´m attaching the log with several modes for audio (I removed all except English and Spanish) with the same result. Any ideas? By the way, I also tried it with 36.03 and 36.02 with the same result.

3D isn't supported in BD-RB. It will be eventually -- but right now there really is no way to reencode to MVC. As for it appearing to be larger than the disc, that is how it should look on a 3D disc because some sectors are parts of more than one file and are therefore "double counted".

I should be able to do a non-3D backup of a 3D disc pretty easily -- maybe in one of the next couple of releases.

Wow!!! That was fast!!! Thank you for your lightning-fast response.

The option to copy only the non-3D version would be great.

Thank you again.

Have some problem with the old movie Twister (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117998/). R2 European Universal release. I'm getting pixelation in "fast" scenes. The example is at ~1:42.35.

http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/1824/ci150042966430121508.jpg

To me it seems to be generated in the encode phase. The original plays back fine with no pixelation at all.

Can someone who has this movie please do a test run so I know if the problem is only at my end or if this is a troublesome title. It could of course be a bad rip but how can I know if the original shows no errors? It's ripped with latest AnyDVD HD to folder. Settings in BD-RB as follows:

Full backup, 2-pass Highest (Very slow) and without "Quick for extras"

Ok, what a mess... my 5th Gen model (MA002ZP) doesn't seem to be listed in any of their specs -- but it appears to be the one I linked.

@jdobbs

Sounds great. I look forward to trying it again on the next version. Mahalo jdobbs!

When pass 1 has been done in High Quality (Default) mode, can I change pass 2 to be done in Highest Quality mode, or would the stats file from pass 1 be invalid?
From x264 I get the warning 'direct=auto not used on the first pass'. Is this critical?

If you use 2 pass mode, then afaik the 1st pass is only used to thoroughly analyse the m2ts stream. The actual encoding is then done in the 2nd pass using the quality selection you made.

@LowDead;
It would probably be a good test to try it with x264 Internal LAVF for decoding unselected.
I seem to remember reading that some types of VC-1 files can be affected by it. ( not sure if this applies here, but it would be good to know if unselecting LAVF corrects this! )

Yes, but when I select "Automatic Quality Settings" DB-RB uses '--direct spatial' for pass 1 (i.e. the x264 default). When I change for pass 2 to "High Quality" DB-RB will set '--direct auto' AFAIK. x264 then discovers that '--direct...' has not been specified for pass 1 and defaults to '--direct temporal' and outputs a warning. DB-RB however permits to resume the job based on the stats from pass 1.
Should DB-RB in this case recommend to redo pass 1?

Should DB-RB in this case recommend to redo pass 1? BD-RB always uses the same set of settings for pass 1 and pass 2 -- unless you change the quality setting between the two.

Yes, but it does the analysis using the settings you have specified. It is probably not a good idea to use different quality settings between the two passes.
