How do I find the inspect log?

1. It's better to just turn this one on and leave it.

2. Actually LAVF should be off by default. I'd recommend to do a test and compare the speed. The quality will be the same -- and on some systems LAVF is faster -- but contrary to what I'd originally thought, it can also be slower on some (that's why I changed it back to "off" as the default.

Thanks for the quick reply.

One last question; so if I turn on DECOMB filter then it wont affect the original movie which is 1080p. The reason why I am asking is because I have heard people say that if you de-interlace a 1080p video then the quality degrades significantly.

thanks

thanks The deinterlacing options are only applied to interlaced sources.

@jdobbs

Hi!

Here's one that will knock your socks off - and I'm pretty sure I know the reason for the anomalous results:

Background - The title of the Blu-ray is "Buried", with the ENTIRE movie shot inside a coffin, in which the lead (only) character is being buried alive. I'd guess that the BRIGHTEST lighting in any scene is no greater than 1 to 2 candlepower, including many interspersed moments of total darkness. (I'm guessing that the poor end result is due to the unusual lighting throughout the entire movie).

Since I'd been getting extremely good results of late, using settings of "Good" and "CRF" to generate BD9s of movies of over two hours duration and BD5s for those of two hours or less, I thought I'd try this one at BD5 (due to the lack of action, light, and colors) with the same settings.

The end result was a full disc of a whopping 1.34Gigs, with heavy duty blocking reminiscent of compressed videos we used to make using the ORIGINAL DivX hack of the MS codec.

(I am presently re-doing it, using the "Automatic" setting, which I'm fairly certain will yield good results)

This is the full log of "Good" "CRF" version:

Ok, I'm confused. The one I'm testing is in the middle of encoding now... no problems.

Can you post your INI file so I can use the exact same settings as you?

OK, I think I found the issue. It appears I was trying to make a DVD-9 (accidentally checked 9 instead of 5) from a BD Rebuilder BD-9 folder. I just attempted it again and it failed. I assume this makes sense, since who would want to make a BD-9 into a DVD-9, but it fails all the same. Sorry for the incorrect info. Just for clarification, here is the .ini:

Hi!

Here's one that will knock your socks off - and I'm pretty sure I know the reason for the anomalous results:

As always, I look forward to your insight ;>}

I am quite certain your suspicion of this low lighting movie is the reason for your results. CRF would not be the best choice for such a backup.
I am also reasonably certain that, at our age, there is not much left that jdobbs would say would "knock your socks off"! :p
( Perhaps a late night visit from Sofia Vergara!! Might ? :rolleyes: :) )

is there a reason you are not using the latest version, BD Rebuilder v0.37.05? It may not correct your problem but there were some changes in that version related to DVD output.

If the source is the original Blu-Ray rip, it works? Only if you try from the already completed BD9 backup does it fail? :confused:

Just curious, but I notice from the BDInfo report of Centurion, which is a uniquely authored Blu-ray in itself, that the original has this for 00004.mpls:

Total Video
Title Codec Length Movie Size Disc Size Bitrate Bitrate Main Audio Track
----- ------ ------- -------------- -------------- ------- ------- ------------------
00004.MPLS AVC 1:37:41 0 29,458,776,053 0.00 0.00 DTS-HD Master 7.1 (48kHz/24-bit)

And the BD-RB backup has:

Total Video
Title Codec Length Movie Size Disc Size Bitrate Bitrate Main Audio Track
----- ------ ------- -------------- -------------- ------- ------- ------------------
00004.MPLS AVC 1:38:23 0 8,446,599,229 0.00 0.00 DD AC3 5.1 640Kbps

This full BD9 backup was created with BD-RBV03705, the audio is perfectly in sync from your latest find/fix.
I have checked a few others, but BDInfo reports identical movie lengths with the original and the backup.

Just a thought, but a potential problem, maybe minor, but using a previous BD-RB backup as the source to make another backup could bring about audio distortion problems, since the original audio has been amplified by BD-RB ( Amplify(1.2)). One additional amplification may not create a problem, but any additional ones could! :)

I have checked a few others, but BDInfo reports identical movie lengths with the original and the backup. I don't think I understand your point. Yes, the audio was converted to AC3... as it always is on BD-9 backups. A DTS-HD audio track could take up the output size without even considering the video.

If it's the difference in length that is your concern - my guess would be that on the original the timing in the MPLS didn't include the silent "intro" screen. It is possible for an MPLS to reference start and stop points other than the beginning of the video.

Yes it is the video length I was referring to. The difference, 42 seconds, seemed unusual. There was a 18393 second time delay for the audio, but I just thought the overall times should match.

Regarding my post #11305 ("Buried"):

I performed a new conversion from the original Blu-ray disc, this time using "Automatic" setting and BD/DVD9 (rather than BD/DVD5).These settings yielded an excellent 7.6Gb full disc copy, as opposed to the pathetic, blocky 1.34Gb originally created with CRF...

Just a small problem which seems to have come in recently. Through one thing or another (computer crashing, disc space) I've had three jobs which have failed to complete. However, I haven't been able to restart any of them - the programme always wants to delete the old files and restart. I haven't changed any settings and it is starting to annoy me as in all three cases they were well into the 90%s.

If you keep your BDREBUILDER configuration settings file, delete all other files in the unzipped folder, and unzip the previous version, BD-RBV03704, and try with that one it will allow you to continue from a previously started/finished job.

I don't know if you are wanting it to continue from the 90% done point or not but it was my understanding that the continue will only restart at the beginning of pass 2 of a movie only rebuild even if it was at 90% completed on pass 2. It will not continue at exactly the last point where it was previously encoding. I hope you were doing a full rebuild and it was a multi part movie, lol. It really hurts when you go in to see if it has completed and the computer has had a crash or like me when I bumped the mouse and it was hovering over the close button and sat there all night with a do you want to cancel or continue diaglog box waiting for me to answer it, lol

I have tested on two different BD9 full movie backups that I still have kept all the files for, and for both as long as I use BD-RBV03704, I have the option to resume. Of course these are already completed, so resume will only rebuild the Blu-Ray structure. ( Which I like and use quite often! )
With BD-RBV03705, the Delete All Old Files message is displayed. I'm using the same BDREBUILDER configuration file for both tests.
No HD audio for these BD9 backups.

Tsmuxer is included when you download Bd-rebuilder and is in tools folder. However don't change file inside that folder.

@j_m_min;
Inside the folder that you unzipped BD-RB is a program called Inspect. Open that program, run it and post the results ( Highlight Copy and Paste ).
If you are using AnyDVD HD to rip the disc, start AnyDVD HD and go to settings. Highlight Video Blu-ray on the left side of the window. There need only be one check mark next to Enable Blu-ray support. Everything else has no selections checked.
If your Inspect log shows any problems, correct those first and then try again.
If AnyDVD HD had any other settings then the above mentioned, re-rip the disc after changing those settings and try again. ;)

Personally I use AnyDVD HD to "Rip Video DVD to Hard Disk". If you know how to mount an image, "Rip to Image" is ok too. You can use either method.
I would rip the disc to your hard drive rather than trying to run it from your Blu-ray drive though! Then select this as the source and try BD-RB again. :)

I'm sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong thread, but I simply want to thank Mr. Dobbs for creating an outstanding video software. I'm relatively new to useing BD Rebuilder.

I thought that I'd like to try to see if Peter Jackson's extended version of KING KONG Blu Ray would work with BD Rebuilder. Yes, I realize that this film is 3 hours and 20 minutes long; I had my doubts about whether it would fit on a 4.3 gig standard dvd. Surely there would be tons of pixelization, artifacting in the final compression. But, I thought, hey.. ya never know unless you try~.

I downloaded and installed the latest beta of BD Rebuilder (Ver. 37.3 at the time of this project), set it to the HIGHEST 2 pass level, with a target of BD-5; with AC3 448 audio. (I used DVDFAB HD Dycrypter to decrypt the movie, no problems there.) I have a new Dell Inspiron 560, with an Intel Duo Core 2, three gig processor, and 4 gigs memory. The entire process took about 14 hours to complete. I then burned the project to a Verbatim standard 4.3 blank DVD with Imgburn.

.. While BD Rebuilder was "cooking", I took the opportunity to watch the original Peter Jackson's extended KING KONG blu ray for comparison purposes; watch the original, then compare the quality of the backed up copy to the original.

Later, when BD Rebuilder was done, after Imgburn finished the burn, I placed this Extended KING KONG back up disc into my Insignia NS-WBRDVD player, to watch on my 40 inch Samsung 630 LCD.

I was simply amazed. More than amazed. FLOORED might be the better word. The back up copy was EXACTLY the same as the ORIGINAL. I simply could not see any signs of artifacting, or pixelization anywhere. And I specifically looked for them. I saw that BE Rebuilder encoded the bit rate at 2,340, it still has the AC3 6 channel audio english soundtrack, and english sub title. I EXPECTED this experiment to have tons of problems, but BD Rebuilder did a marvelous job. This is simply terrific software, Mr. Dobbs. Thank you !

I DO have a question. I see in the BD Rebuilder settings, that there is an option for STANDARD dvds to be RESIZED to either 720P or 1080P. I'm somewhat skeptical..surely a standard 480I dvd can't be converted into a High Definition 1080P blu ray..so, what exactly does this option do? What is the quality of the finished projects like? Just curious.

Thanks again, Mr. Dobbs, for all the outstanding work you've done in creating BD Rebuilder!

@Sinatrafan

Thanks for the positive feedback. X264 (the encoder used within BD Rebuilder) should be credited for the excellent compression and is very clearly the finest AVC encoder around.

When you watch a 480i source on your large-screen TV it is typically converted to 1080 (by either the BD player or the monitor). The up-conversion has to be done in realtime by the unit so it typically isn't optimal. All that option does is allow AVISYNTH to do the up-conversion ahead of time using a more intricate method (more time consuming as well). It can mean a better quality conversion, especially when compared to some low end players -- but frankly I rarely use it, as my Sony player/monitor combination does a very good job.

Thank you, Mr. Dobbs, for clarifying what the purpose of these resizing settings are in BD Rebuilder.

Sooo, if I run the standard dvds of the Extended THE LORD OF THE RINGS set through BD Rebuilder, it may possibly result in enhancing (to a very small degree) the upconversion through my Blu Ray player. It may not find more detail, but rather simply look a bit better on screen. Hmmm, I may have to try this as a experiment.

Thanks again, Mr. Dobbs.

OK, here is the LASTCMD.TXT. I am running Vista 64. Any help greatly appreciated. And, BTW I downloaded HCEnc from the author site and replaced the one in BDRB and got the exact same result.

"C:\Users\admin\BD_Rebuilder\tools\x264.exe" "V:\PROCESSED HD\WORKFILES\VID_00000.AVS" --preset superfast --b-pyramid strict --weightp 1 --qpmin=0 --bitrate 10356 --level 4.1 --qpfile "V:\PROCESSED HD\WORKFILES\VID_00000.CHP" --sar 1:1 --aud --nal-hrd vbr --pic-struct --vbv-bufsize 14500 --keyint 24 --min-keyint 1 --ipratio 1.1 --pbratio 1.1 --vbv-maxrate 17500 --threads auto --slices 4 --thread-input --stats "V:\PROCESSED HD\WORKFILES\VID_00000.AVS.264.stats" --pass 2 --output "V:\PROCESSED HD\WORKFILES\VID_00000.AVS.264"

What version of BD Rebuilder are you using? That's an old command line.

Worse than that, it shows BD-RB making a .264 file and not MPEG since iirc larrsz wants to make a DVD-5 from a BD-9? larrsz have you selected for DVD (VIDEO_TS) output?

@Normanski;
Post the Inspect report.
Uninstall any codec packs. You should only have Haali, ffdshow and Avisynth.

OK, this is worse than I thought. I had mistakenly thought it was working going from the original BD rip rather than the BDRB built BD-9. So I ripped my BD to hard drive and I am getting the same issue with both!

I checked inspect- get all "OKs"

Is there anything else I can check? This is wierd...Well, I haven't used BD-RB for quite a while (had to download the latest) nor have I tried the BD-to-DVD conversion, but it seems to me BD-RB wants to invoke HCencoder.exe from the Tools folder, and it's failing. Do you have any rogue installations of HCencoder on your PC?

Try also placing a line in your .INI file:

SHOW_ENCODER=1

maybe that will expose something. Maybe too open Task Manager and see if HCencoder appears there (when BD-RB says "Reencoding: VID_00001"). Look again at your LASTCMD which should be a Hank's command not x264.

I have two instances of HCenc on my computer (BR RB and DVD RB). they are in the respective folders for the programs.

When I edit the INI and add the show encoder script above, I get nothing, HCEnc does not pop up. If I go to the tools folder and start HCEnc, it opens fine, but it errors out and closes after 10 seconds.

And, apparently there is no LASTCMD in the newest beta of BDRB (at least I cannot find it doing a search)

Question: If I select Settings>Encoder> Should x264 Encoder be checked if I am making a DVD? That seems to be the only available choice.

I am really going crazy here...

@larrsz And, apparently there is no LASTCMD in the newest beta of BDRB (at least I cannot find it doing a search) It should be in the same folder as "BDREBUILDER.EXE"...
