Jdobbs,
I have a question about DTS Express and how it differs from
AC3 Plus.
I have backed up a few movies that use AC3 Plus instead of DTS Express for the PIP track and it works fine in the final BD-25 disc. Everything is in sync. I assume this works because TSMUXER supports AC3 Plus but not DTS Express? So, I was curious what the difference is. I was also wondering if it would be possible to convert DTS Express tracks to AC3 plus and then use TSMUXER to put it back together? I was curious and thought maybe you would know the answer.
I would also like to thank you for such an awesome program and all the time you put into it. Thanks.
Later,
Acerjen It would work fine to convert DTS Express to AC3 Plus. But TSMUXER can't demux DTS Express, and I don't know of a freeware CODEC that will play it back (so you can reencode it).

This is one of those things which keeps cropping up and you revisit it and then think there may be an easy solution, only to find there's always one link missing. I understand that eac3to will read / demux DTS-E and E-AC3, but I've never seen an ability to encode to E-AC3. eac3to picks up commercial codecs (which may be on your machine if you've installed TMT or Power DVD) but I can find no mention of, for instance, demuxing DTS-E and encoding it to E-AC3 - it seems to have to be to a format such as ac3, wav etc. Given the number of great brains who would have their eye out for a solution to the PiP issue, I guess it's not possible, rather than nobody's tried. With TsMuxer frozen, maybe the author of eac3to might be able to do what you suggest, as I think the remux of DTS-E might be too problematic.

eac3to (in order is much better than tsmuxer for demuxing, and safer for streams that will be direct stream copyed) can demux/decode dts-e IIRC and here is freeware e-ac3 encoder (aften extension/patch from developer) http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=161383, maybe is not best but will satisfy needs here (i hope that secondary audio not need core track as primary e-ac3 does, i am not sure but i can check), it probably will create same quality like ac3 at same bitrate, but that is not bad at all for first time :)

Thanks - sounds interesting. Currently if I process an m2ts file with dts-express I can use the .dts setting within eac3to. Does eac3to automatically pick up aften, and thus should you be able to just put a suitable suffix in the command line for it automatically encode to e-ac3?
**As an initial test I have extracted a dts-express PiP audio track and I got a perfect ac3 files using Aften, therefore if the beta version of Aften does make a E-AC3 file, can this be remuxed back into the m2ts file to test?
eac3to p:\LET_ME_IN_2010\BMDV\STREAM\00001.M2TS 6: audio.ac3
DTS Express, 2.0 channels, 1:55:48, 24 bits, 192kbps, 48kHz
Decoding with ArcSoft DTS Decoder...
Encoding AC3 <448kbps> with libAften...
Creating file "audio.ac3"...
eac3to processing took 2 minutes, 42 seconds.
Done.

No there is no compiled bulds of aften that support eac3 (i didn't see) and eac3to uses aftenlib, so no eac3 encoding inside eac3to at least not yet. But still i am not sure (someone correct me if i wrong) and don't know that eac3to can decode dtse or just can demux it.
eac3 encoding will be now easy, but still need to check that secondary audio need core (normal ac3), that will broke completely idea and back to beginning

My plan has always been to manually pull the DTS-E audio packets from the source M2TS, manipulate the timestamps appropriately, and reinsert it in the output stream. It's already very efficiently encoded, so I see no need to go through all the decoding/reencoding. I wrote the code to do the extract/insert, but haven't been able to make it work without causing "stutter" in the output, so I haven't released it for any testing outside myself. I'm not sure yet what I'm doing wrong.

Just out of interest, is the stuttering limited to the secondary audio, or does it impact the video? Is it possible that the stuttering is player dependent?

I agree, but from this point it's completely irrelevant since quality will not drop (reencoding will not affect that much since bitrate can be up 256kbps and eac3 encoding is efficient as much ac3 is), and it's secondary audio, who cares anyway. Reinserting is not good idea (there is ton of PES/DTS extensions, flags, ...) and tsmuxer support eac3, but you maybe success, you may need more samples ?

No. I have four different players that I use for testing, two Sonys and two Samsungs. It does play ok on the computer -- but that's always a bad test.

I'm very aware of all the timestamps -- I manipulate them already in other areas. There are times when you just can't use the timestamps created by TSMUXER (especially in menus or sources with out-of-mux substreams) and you have to set the stream's timestamps back to match the original.

There appears to be a problem with the english or any subtitles being forced on with no option to turn them off through the menu or through the remote. I am using BD-RBV03803 to make a full backup of True Blood season 3. I have tried two different times now, with the same results. Subtitles are always on regardless if the subtitle set up page says they are off. There is no way to turn them off.
The original does not display this same behavior. I have not had this happen on any other title, so perhaps True Blood Season 3 is unique... damn vampires! :p

The problem from my understanding is that reencoding would make the audio useless. The dts-express track has metadate inside of it that controls the volume of the secondary track as well as the main track and the mixing of the tracks together. Once you decode the audio you would loose that metadata and would then have no way for the player to know how to set the two audio tracks. Could end up with both tracks playing and full volume the whole time. This is from the DTS site.
To ensure that the audio mix comes out perfectly, DTS-HD employs an innovative feature called Dynamic Mixing. When the movie or concert creators encode the Secondary or Sub audio, they include meta-data that will dynamically mix that audio with the primary audio. With Dynamic Mixing, you’ll continually have the correct sound balance — just as the producers intended.

Yes, but typically the ISO is created by the same (or similar) program that writes it.
If you know (or can find out) how it needs to be done, maybe we can seek the help of ImgBurn's author to implement a feature that can write an ISO with mulit-referenced blocks.
Just an idea.

The subtitles are simply extracted and then remuxed with TSMUXER. There really is no processing done that could change the behaviour (except when resizing).

No resizing, kept full 1080P. This set does not allow turning subtitles on / off by the remote subtitle button while the episode is playing. ( message pops up saying feature not allowed ) The only way to turn them on / off is through the languages button. By default they are off, but with the BD-RB backup they are always on, even though the setup says they are off!
EDIT:
If I select another language, then that language is displayed always, even though the subtitle selection button option says " None " for the subtitles to be displayed.

I had something very similar on 'the girl with the dragon tattoo' - I put it down to moving between Swedish and English soundtracks but I couldn't turn off the english subtitles - never got to the bottom of it and forgot to raise it.

I do not have this problem with The Girl With The Dragon tatoo. The english subtitles start on by default, but I can turn them off with the remote.

:thanks:I apologize if I posted this in the wrong spot, but I could not find any post specifically dealing with this problem.
I've been using BD Rebuilder for quite some time, and I must say it's a great tool and very reliable. I've encountered very few problems...and the results are often amazing.
But very recently I encountered some issues with a couple of Blu-Ray discs (where the movie is in the 38-39GB range). These both were shot in a soft look, which appears to cause some issues and results in VERY HIGH bit rates even when compressed down to a BD25. In particular is AI (Artificial Intelligence), where I've noticed that BD Rebuilder has a number of sequences where the re-encoded bitrate exceeds the original (which was already high). Generally these are in the low 40 mbps range, which is above the Blu-Ray standard.
Interesting these high bitrate sections playback ok on my Sony BX-37. However, generally each time there is a bitrate spike it's followed by scene using a lower bit rate...and quite often when this occurs, the video freezes for 1-2 seconds and resumes. This only happens when played on my BX-37 (which is update to date with regard to firmware). Since this only happens for the two films where BD Rebuilder pushed the bitrate above 40, and does not occur for any other film I've re-encoded with BD Rebuilder, I'm thinking it's related to that excessively high bitrate.
Many of these high bit rate scenes are low-contrast without obvious reason for the high bitrate...except that they are complex video scenes with low-contract and that semi-frosted look that some film makers are striving for.
Except for the freezing, the end result look great. In fact, the re-encode is slightly sharper with less noise.
Now I've tried all the possible settings (High Speed, Good, Better, High Quality, and Highest Quality)...and this is one movie where the highest encoding actually makes it better without introducing DNR artifacts and without adding additional softness or reducing the color, or shifting the color.
All resulted in at least some freezing, with the Highest Quality setting introducing the most...mainly because it introduced the most high bitrate spikes.
So my question is...is there a way or and option to limit the maximum bitrate to under 40 mbps?
Note than when I compressed down to a BD5 (which still looks ok), the playback appeared without any freezing. Which tends to imply the problem is the high bit rate...

How are you determining that the bitrate is above 40Mbs? BD Rebuilder already has code that limits the average bitrate in the command line -- and the maximum (--vbv-maxrate) is always set to 35Mbs or below (occasionally the combined audio bitrate drives it lower).
If you're seeing spikes above 40Mbs, I'd have to believe there may be some glitch in X264's limiting algorithm. A player should be able to handle spikes through it's buffering, but they have to be very short.

Are you ripping with AnyDVD HD? Any settings selected that might change the commands?
Yes I am ripping with AnyDVD HD, and I have not changed any rip settings. The original rip on my hard drive works properly with TMT3 and PowerDVD. The original Blu-ray disc plays properly as well on my Sony S360 and BX1.
The BD-RE of the BD-RB backup has the subtitles on all the time regardless of playing back on my S360, BX1 or Power DVD and TMT3.
I always burn to disc for the ultimate test of standalone playback. I became suspicious when the software playback had the subtitles on all the time. So this reporting is only after confirming that as well as exhausting all other reasons on my end!:p
I have tried two different Blu-ray titles after this problem, ripping them with AnyDVD HD with no changes, doing full backups with BD-RBV03803, and I cannot repeat this issue. So it seams to be related to True Blood S3 D1. I have not tried discs 2-5 yet, but I will and let you know if this happens on these discs too. ;)

Hi all, very useful forum. Did a search on Pacific, got this thread as a hit, and, well, it's a bazillion pages. I spent some time looking through it but as you can imagine, no luck. So anyway...
Trying to back up my Blu disc set of The Pacific. No problems with Discs 1, 2, and 4 so far, but Disc 3 is stumping me. I'm selecting BD-R since that's what I'm backing up to but the file size after BD Builder is a couple hundred sectors larger than the BD-R. I've tried custom size, but same problem. I really don't want to go to DVD DL so what's the trick to forcing a couple hundred sectors off this rebuild?
Particulars:
BDRebuilder ver 38.03 beta
ImgBurn v2.5.5.0 reports file size as 12,283,158 sectors and BD-R as 12,281,442 sectors.
Tried to backup anyway, ran out of space, backup failed.
Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? Do you have the log for that encode? It would also be helpful to see the INF file. It's more important to find the cause of the oversize and fix it than to simply post a tweak to make it fit.

Zombies are so much more fun. :) Why couldn't you have found the problem in "Shaun of the Dead" or "Zombieland"? Hmmm -- maybe I should try "The Pacific Disc 3" instead...

I never watched either of those two movies, not my favorite either. True Blood is for my daughter, she's the fan. :p
This last test was done at quickest setting to BD5 for DVD+RW testing so bitrates will be quite low. The first test was to BD9, but I since have run this latest test, so I don't have that INI.

Hey everyone, I know this has probably been discussed before but I can't remember the answer or maybe there is a new recomendation now for tne newest version. I have some concert BD disks that I am backing up and they are mostly 1080i VC-1 29.97 video. I noticed that these files have the little asterick " ** " indicator in the stream section but when it shows the source in the log section while processing the "**" are not shown. What is the best method to keep the BD_RB output smooth like the original, without judders or smearing? Does BD_Rebuilder leave the output still interlaced like the original if you take out the checkmark from "use DEINTERLACER on interlaced sources? Also while we are on this subject what about the use "IVCT sources with 3.2 pulldown? What is the very best solution for 1080i output for NTSC 29.97?
PS: thanks, dobbs for this great program, when I get over paying for the new computer I will be sure to send another donation. I think I wore out the old one with BD_RB, LOL!

I didn't know it was possible to wear a computer out like that LOL! My 2001 HP is still kicking, and I worked it like a dog, with dvd shrink, dr. divx, etc.

You don't want to do IVTC on that source -- because the "**" indicates that it is hybrid. So BD-RB won't do IVTC unless you force it (see IVTC_SELECTION in HIDDENOPTS.TXT). Hybrid means that there are parts that use pulldown and other parts that are true interlaced. Normally for interlaced or hybrid sources I do no filtering and reencode it as interlaced. If, though, you plan to do much playback on a computer I would recommend you select "use DEINTERLACER". For a hybrid source I would also set DEINTERLACER_TYPE=3 in the INI file. That will tell BD-RB to use SmoothDeinterlace().

@jdobbs, RE:Normally for interlaced or hybrid sources I do no filtering and reencode it as interlaced.
So for most 1080i and 1080i hybrid "**", if playing on STB just leave the use DEINTERLACER off, and no pulldown. Thanks for your input, that helps me with these music disks alot. Are these disks encoded in 1080i just because they originally for broadcast or for some technical reason? It seems like a lot of the music and documentary disks are encoded as 1080i. I was using a Hauppauge HD-1212 for a DVR and had success just changing the video to 720p for playback and got rid of the interlaced altogether but I don't think I could easily do these videos like that.

Hi!
Source: BEAN.1997.1080P.BLU-RAY.CEE.VC-1.DTS-HD.MA.5.1-RFWIf this descriptive title is something other than an original, commercial Blu-ray disc, that's likely the cause of your problem - and likely cannot be meaningfully addressed here...

Do you have the log for that encode? It would also be helpful to see the INF file. It's more important to find the cause of the oversize and fix it than to simply post a tweak to make it fit.
Is this the INF file? How do I save the log file? Simply cut and paste or is it stored somewhere on my computer? I'll do a rebuild if necessary. Right now I'm trying a rebuild with 23.4GB target size vs. 23.5GB, so we'll see if that makes a difference.

The LOG is stored in the WORKING folder. It's called BD-REBUILDER.LOG and is a text file.
I ordered "The Pacific" for testing and hope to get it either tomorrow or the next day.

@sandrino3867
Did you edit the LOG you posted? There seems to be debug information missing after "- FFDSHOW: 3326, Ok".
But since this appears to be a downloaded source I don't think I can help anyway -- there is too much likelihood that there are problems even before the encode. A lot of people who reencode and post those things are clueless and screw it up royally. Besides, it violates DOOM9 forum rules.

1. Download and install FFDSHOW (http://www.jdobbs.net/freeware/ffdshow_rev3326_20100319_clsid.exe) and the Haali Matroska Splitter (http://www.jdobbs.net/freeware/MatroskaSplitter.exe). They are required for BD-RB to work and are free. After the install, run "Video Decoder Configuration" for FFDSHOW from the "START/Programs" menu, and make sure MPEG2 decoding is enabled. Do the same using "Audio Decoder Configuration" to ensure "Uncompressed" is set to "All Supported".
Could someone clarify this? There's no "enabled" option.

How do I decide between "libavcodec" and "libmpeg2" options?
Thanks!

Go easy on me. I hope this isnt too off topic as I dont know if its something to do with bd rebuilder or not but does anyone know what bd rebuilder may be doing to the files that keeps my Sony BDP-CX7000ES from finding the cover art and metadata for title, description etc. that would otherwise be pulled from Gracenote on the original disk?

Either choice is fine. I use "libavcodec"

Those are typically stored in a folder other than BDMV or CERTIFICATE. BD-RB will copy them if they exist in the source -- but only for a full backup. But you have to make sure they are there before starting.

Can you give me any specifics on your settings, and perhaps provide the INI file?
I ran "The Pacific", Disc 3 overnight and it sized to 24,336,711,840 bytes -- which will easily fit on a BD-25.

Backing up to 25 gb disks and doing full backkups and wanted to know (generally speaking) what is the difference between Highest (very slow) and High Speed Option (BD-25)? Which one provides the best quality audio/video output?
thanks in advance!
I would also like to know if this thread is for bug reports only is there another thread for usage questions?
Does it help if I say it like the Double Rainbow Guy: "What Does it Mean!!"

I would see the Bitrate displayed on my TV (via my Blu-Ray player)...which does show very short lived high rates. But after posting this question, I installed BDInfo and then Scanned the Bitrates on a number of Blu-Ray titles, including the original of A.I. and the copy. It includes categories for Peak Bitrates for 1 sec, 5 sec, and 10 sec duration. The original of A.I. only exceeded 40 mbps a few times in the 1 sec category. Never in the 5 or 10 sec category. The copy exceeded 40 mbps in both the 1 sec and 5 sec categories.
Now that was done using the Highest Quality setting to a target size of 24500 (which is normally what I use, as it works 98% of the time).
Last night re-encoded A.I. with a target size of 23500 to see if could reduce the high bit rates, and it helped. The copy only exceeds 40 mbps in the 1 sec category...though the highest at the 1 sec category exceeds the highest bit rate the original had (about 48 mbps).
I have not burned that to a BD yet, but will shortly and will check it out.
I'm thinking it's my player and not the encode...as I rarely encounter such problems. Though I did note a two occurances of a few dropped frames on another film last night. In one of the two cases, backing up and replaying did not reproduce the dropped frames and in the other case it was reproduceable. Not sure if the two are related.
And once again. As I did this film (A.I.) in all the quality modes, I did note that the High-Speed only included two such freezes, whereas the Highest Quality mode dozens of them. The various in-between showed more than the High-Speed mode but less than the Highest Quality mode. So my assuption is (without knowing for sure) is that as you go higher on the quality scale, the encoder is able to better determine where it should boost the bitrate, and where it can slack off a bit...to fit the target size. And the smaller the target size, the lower the max bit rate...
I have an I7-930 system (not overclocked) with 9GB memory. A.I. took about 9.5 hours at the highest quality setting. Which is quite a bit more than most films...which average anywhere between 4 and 6 hours using the Highest Quality mode.
BTW, the WB encode of A.I. looks fabulous. No DNR, no EE. Very sharp. Very detailed.

@jdobbs;
I ran a full backup to BD5, and forgot to delete the extra files copied from the Anydvd HD rip. (ANY!, PS3_UPDATE, PS3_VPRM, PS3_DISC.SFB) These files total 177MB. Normally I would not think this is a big deal since I have selected "Keep only BDMV/CERTIFICATE folders" in Setup. The total file size of the backup was only 4.06GB.
So out of curiosity, I ran the same backup again using the exact same settings, except I deleted these files from the source folder. I noticed in the log of this new backup that the bitrates are higher on all files reencoded, and the final output was 4.22GB.
Could it be that BD-RB is not subtracting for these folders to allow for this extra available room when "Keep only BDMV/CERTIFICATE folders" is selected in Setup?
