I have to wonder what kind of quality a "FULL" Bourne Identity (118 minutes) backup to BD-5 would look like? I recently did the "Once Upon A Time In America", and it runs just shy of 4 hrs, and backed it up to a "Movie Only" BD-9. Granted the movie has a soft and fuzzy look to it especially in the dark interior scenes but when comparing it to the original I can see some occasional ringing and halos in it. I have noticed in a few movies lately that the backups have slight problems in dimly lit scenes that contain fog or smoke. I don't know if this is inherent in the h264 codec or in the tighter compression being used for these longer titles? I am redoing "OUATIA" this time to a BD-25 "Movie Only", but which is preferable for "ONE PASS" if you don't use the automatic settings, "CBR or ABR"? Thanks for the help and to jdobbs for the great program. While X264 is an incredible program -- the bottom line is that 4 hours is probably just too much for a backup to BD-9. You can do it and it isn't actually bad looking, but you'll lose some quality. These days with BD-9s down around 40 cents apiece and BDs at around a dollar, I typically do movie-only backups to BD-9 and full backups to BD-25. That way I'm satisfied that the backup is just as good as the original.

Generally CRF is superior to one pass ABR -- but it has to estimate its output, so you might over/undersize. Two pass is a way to always ensure you are getting the best quality in space available, and if quality is your goal, why choose between to modes that are both inferior to two-pass?

The thing is, though, that sometimes at high bitrates (like on a BD-25) you can't see the difference between any of the modes. That's why I still recommend "Automatic" -- it adjusts depending upon the target, is based on a lot of encoding experience, and almost always gives you the best balance of encoding time to quality output.

Yes, it's actually the same code that supports both. Remember, though, it'll still be experimental (interpret that as "use a BD-RE").

Will do! :p
I have 4 BD-RE's and several Blu-rays with DTS Express secondary audio, so I will be running many tests and will let you know my results. :)Well... this isn't going well. I just ran into some issues that may take some time. It may not be in the next release.

Well... this isn't going well. I just ran into some issues that may take some time. It may not be in the next release.

I have also been keeping dts express images put aside for testing (about 20 or 30), so if you want to collect a lot of data using a 'beta' which may not work very reliably, I'm happy to run a version on a secondary machine for you to avoid the loads of replies you'll get in this thread from an unstable version.

Ok, the results are in - apologies for the length of this post, but I think some of this is pretty interesting.

Remuxing (to m2ts, using tsmuxer) the demuxed reencoded video with the demuxed untouched DTS audio track still results in the audio being out of sync, although it seems that perhaps it is less out of sync than with the reencoded audio - I don't have a particularly scientific method of measuring that. Per Video Dude's logic this would mean the problem lies with the reencoded video. However...

DGAVCIndex shows the framerate of the demuxed reencoded as 23.976024 fps:

http://i55.tinypic.com/ftodj9.png

This is exactly the same as the demuxed original video stream, which would suggest there is no problem with the framerate of the reencoded video.

So what's the problem? Assuming it was the audio that was the wrong length, I decided to check the length of all the tracks - I remuxed the video and audio from the untouched m2ts into an mkv container so that I could open them in Quicktime on my Macbook (this is the only way I know of getting this info). I also did the same with the reencoded video and audio streams. The results (untouched streams on the bottom) are:

http://i51.tinypic.com/eu3ocg.png

So it looks like BD-RB is dealing with each stream properly, and for some reason the fact that the video stream is ~2 secs shorter than the audio streams matters for the rebuilt BD-5, but not for the original Bluray.

At some point in my investigations I also figured it would be a good idea to count the frames in each video stream - I couldn't work out how to do this in any of the software I had installed, but I noticed that BD-RB put this information into the log file for each encode - so I loaded the rebuilt BD-5 into BD-RB as a source, and set it running. The relevant sections from the log files are:

So the reencoded video stream has gained 49 frames from somewhere. I didn't know whether this was expected of BD-RB output (as I said previously, I don't really know much about digital video stuff), so I also loaded some of the other BD-5s that I had, and compared to the log for when they were backed up:

so THE_DARK_KNIGHT has actually lost one frame, but the others are identical which suggested to me that I should normally expect BD-RB to produce output with the same number of frames as the input. So I compared the other BD-5 on which I have noticed audio sync issues:

And what do you know, it's gained some (22) frames as well. This can't be a coincidence, but I don't know enough about how any of these programs work to be able to work out what the cause is. I'm now hoping that someone will be able to interpret this information and tell me what's going on here, since I'm starting to go a little crazy.

Ok... here's a riddle. Why is it only happening to you?

Voyeurism

Right - I'm not an idiot, I understand that you think there is an issue with the codecs on my system or something is interfering with BD-RB or its supporting applications. Since I don't know what that issue is, or what is interfering with BD-RB, I can either reformat my system drive and reinstall the OS or I can try to ascertain what the problem is. I had hoped that I could obtain some help in finding the problem, given that you and others posting in this thread clearly have a far better understanding of what these programs are actually doing than I do, but if you don't want to help me then I guess that's your prerogative - others had made posts which indicated that they were interested in helping.

It just seems like a strange attitude for someone to have when they're relying on the help of others in identifying and isolating bugs in software which they produce - even if the issue is a conflict with something else installed on my system it seems like a very subjective view to take that the issue is really that "'software x' is interfering with BD-RB", rather than "BD-RB doesn't function properly if 'software x' is installed". If you're expecting every user of your software to run it on a dedicated box with just the bare OS installed, good luck with that.

Voyeurism, there really shouldn't be a need for a complete reformat. That's a rare occurrence indeed. That's a last resort. First resort being removing completely, everything pertaining to video/audio codecs. My dedicated machine has zero codec packs installed. I've never had any problems playing any file on that machine either. I know damn little about this stuff. I just understand at a Subconscious level, that having extra codecs/things installed, could wreak havoc with almost any encoder. Including the ability to play files. Perhaps a setting is simply mucked up somewhere. Reinstalling the necessary software will no doubt correct the issue. If that is indeed the issue. If not, perhaps something in the registry is screwy.

I have not reformatted either of my machines in well over a year. I prefer a dedicated machine, because it takes a great deal of time to encode. Even for a quad core. Heck, even a 6core machine gets it's a$$ handed to it LOL!

This problem happens only with movies that have PiP, backups are made to BD5/9 media and seems to be more of an issue with Sony players. This same backup, if burned to BD-R/RE would work perfectly, except of course no secondary audio if it is DTS Express. ( The Bourne Identity has DTS Express )

I hope there is a work-around to this. If I can remember, this has happened even with movie-only backups (I could be wrong though). I really didn't want to invest in a BD-R burner at this time.

Quote: Jdobbs---Two pass is a way to always ensure you are getting the best quality in space available.

I guess that was the true answer I was looking for, that if you want the best quality, then using 2 pass is the best. thanks for your input. I am really pleased with the quality of most of my copys but when you start putting too much time on one disk you do find limitations. Just like encoding time vs encoding quality. What a world, the devil really is in the details with trade offs and compromises everywhere.

@Voyeurism: I feel your pain! There is nothing like have a computer conundrum to make you feel like the world and everyone in it is against you, lol. I had a few weird things happen when I first started playing around with BD_Rebuilder. I had the audio sync problems with only a few titles, and I spent a long time trying to fix them because the encoding time spent felt like such a waste. I don't know what kind of system you have but I have a Dual Core 6700 running @2.66 & 4GB running Vista 32bit on my encoding machine. I built a new system for my main use and use the Dual Core one only for encoding. I have the internet off and no AV or any background stuff like indexing running and still the CPU is maxed out and memory at 64%. When I only had one computer to use and tried surfing the internet and opening other apps I had weird problems on some of my encodes, but now I usually have no probs. I did in the past have sync issues with Benjamin Button, That Evening Sun, Ghost Writer, & Max & Me, but the latest BD_Rebuilder version fixed those problem disks, at least for me anyhow. You might could try putting the 2 hour or more movies on BD-9 disks instead of squeezing them on a BD-5. Your mileage may vary, lol. Good luck, Voyeurism

I don't yet own a Blu-ray burner, so I have to rely on BD-5 and BD-9. I have found that using "automatic quality settings" to BD-9 works pretty well for any movie I have done. Granted my TV is a 5 year old 46" LCD with a lower contrast ratio, but all I really notice is some 'blocking' in low-action parts of the movie. The blocking is only noticeable where there are large areas of a single color - like a flat painted wall in the background.

I use BD-5's for movies that are a bit older, and were not made when Blu-ray or HDDVD were around. It seems like a BD-9 for a 2 hour movie from 1993 is just a waste, even for a full backup - I can hardly see a difference, if any. This is just my opinion, and I don't want to start a debate about this, as I know there are those who want a copy as close to the original as possible. I debated using a BD-5 for Bourne Identity, and decided to do it as a little experiment. It turned out very well - the h264 codec continues to amaze me!!!

I hope there is a work-around to this. If I can remember, this has happened even with movie-only backups (I could be wrong though). I really didn't want to invest in a BD-R burner at this time.

There is a work around for PiP titles, as long as they are not multi-m2ts titles. It requires the use of another program after BD-RB, multiAVCHD. ( for full backups ) Movie only should not be a problem.
However, I am not sure it is worth the time and effort, and I am certainly not promoting this. ( especially in this bug reports thread! ) Doing a movie only backup for these PiP titles, if burning to BD5/9 media, seems more reasonable and has higher compatibility among different players.
I think it is a bonus that we are even able to make such high quality backups from a 25GB to 50GB Blu-ray to DVD media! Accepting certain limitations for these type backups is only fair.
With the price of BD media becoming more reasonable, and Blu-ray burners soon to follow, I believe if one wants a closer representative backup of the original disc, using blu-ray media is the way to do it. ;)

@Capsbackup: Quote: I believe if one wants a closer representative backup of the original disc, using blu-ray media is the way to do it.

I am beginning to believe that this is the way to go if the BD-R's prices continue to fall, but I don't really see many specials on name brand disks. I am too scared to buy unknown quality (Memorex? Ridata?) in quantity untill I can find some locally but everything around town is still 2.50 and up per disk.

I'm having problems trying to get a copy of the first Tinkerbell Blu-ray that includes all the audio tracks. The intro in the beginning of the movie is missing, as is some of the characters talking, at least in the beginning 10 mins of the movie, as I didn't watch the whole thing to see. Anyways, I've tried selected both English audio tracks and it is still missing the same audio tracks. Anyone know what i'm doing wrong?

I have been using Memorex, same as Ridata, which has Ritek-BR2-00 Disc ID, and have had excellent results! :)

Have you tried looking under alternative playlist for a different version/playlist? Sometimes it can be as simple as choosing a different playlist.

The point is that this is a "bug thread" -- and while it would be interesting to find what is causing your problem, it isn't (at least from what I've see so far) a bug. In fact, if I read it right you are getting the error even if you bypass BD-RB alltogether.

The previous page of this thread was almost completely taken up by your post -- in other words, it's clogging up this thread.

As for the "strange attitude" -- you've got to be kidding me! WTF? I think your attitude is extremely strange. This is free software. Since donations are virtually non-existent, I'm putting in a lot of work with no return. In fair exchange for that free software, your part (and that of the others in this thread) is to report issues so I can fix them -- not complain about how your free ride isn't comfortable enough.

The problem is that the bug appears to be in the player, not the software. The weird combination is confusing it's playback on BD-9 full backups. If there's a workaround, I'm not aware of it.

Thanks for the info. I always go to www.blu-raystats.com (http://www.blu-raystats.com) for info on particular titles. However there is no info there on which titles are PiP.
So, what source did you use to find out this info? It would be nice to know not to waste my time with these titles until I decide to upgrade to a BD burner.

Thanks again!

Hope this is the right thread. I have been having trouble with full backups using default settings. I do however use a custom output setting of 24450MB. It usually trips up at the start of PHASE-TWO rebuild with an error message that a file is missing.

If I select the "Movie-Only: setting, the rebuild process does complete.

Hi!An original Disney Blu-ray disc with only one .MPLS ("Playlist") file? That is an EXTREMELY unlikely scenario...

I'm sorry I could only find one on Tinkerbell, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place to select a playlist then. I went to Mode > Other Movie-Only Playlist, and I only see one there. If this is extremely unlikely, where do I need to go to select the other playlists?

@ Setarip_old: Quote: Hi! An original Disney Blu-ray disc with only one .MPLS ("Playlist") file? That is an EXTREMELY unlikely scenario...

I'm afraid Random42 has got you there Setarip_old, This is indeed a disk with "one" mpls for the movie only which is playlist 00053-- With a 1:18.04 run time and only two audio tracks to choose from, 001_LPCM (48kHz/24-bit & 002_AC3.

@Random42, If it was me I would use Clown_BD or multiAVCHD to build a movie only BD movie file which will allow you to convert the Audio to AC3 5.1, and then use BD_Rebuilder to get a iPad MP4 file. I think either you might have a bad rip or that BD_Rebuilder is choking on the 24-bit audio. But that is only my opinion, I don't do many iPad converts. I do every now and then use DvdFab 7 to create an mp4 to play on my EVO 4G, but that was before Jdobbs created the alternate output formats. I may have to try it some time but I still haven't had time to watch all the ones I have on my phone already, lol.

I use BDInfo on the ripped disc to see the contents. From there I decide what type of backup I wish to perform.

@aacm

I've done that disc with no issues. Can you please post the output of INSPECT.EXE? It's located in the BD Rebuilder folder.

You're not doing any encoding for the movie-only backup. Also, I believe you should have also gotten error reports following the failure to build structure. Is there a reason why you didn't post that part of the LOG as well?

hi i got some troubles in encoding a movie... letahl weapon 3 i got troubles when i updated from 03604 to 03703 ... i was converting to bd 25 all the 4 movies of colelction of letahl weapon and when i started the 3rd film i got grey screen for the first 2 sec of movie in all files including extras... and during movie i noticed that also during the movie the screen goes grey for a while and then come back... i think its a troubles for itbc setting that i never used with previous version and now is selected by default ... if i deselct it i got black screen ine ncoding.... the source is vc1 at 29.970 frames.... really strange becuase im sure i converted alot of vc1 and never got this trouble... during conversion i gor the message itvc inverting telecining in effect.... as i repeat its not changed anything... i write also an email some days ago for this problem and got as response to try reinsatll all programs liek ffdshow and matrioska... i done this and still got troubles... i also reinstaleld win 7 64 bit to have system clean becuase i tought of a virus and the first program i reinstaleld was the ffd show and so on and started converting... and got same result...
i dont know why you ahve choosed byd efault the ivtc option...inver pull down is no necessary for blue ray movie but only for dvd.... blue ray goes to 30 frame so an invert telecining is useless...to eb sure is a problem of ivtc ic an confirm that i converted another movie piccolo diavolo of roberto benigni and is vc1 at 23,970 or something similar so pal version and i got no ivtc during conversion (i left selected the option) and got a pefect conversion to bd25... the troubles is that damnde invert telecining that hot video error conversion... why the previous version doesnt have it selected? and im sure the old version 034 or 035 doesnt have at all ivtc in setting....
i'm sue the problem is ivtc before my system is now cleaned and reinstalled and got same result... how can i fix this to have the conversion at same framerate with no black screen????if i deselct i got black screen and only audio...
inspect told me that all drivers are set correct before uninstalling i got avisynth updated to 261 i dont know why but now i reinstaleld correctly my win7 64bit and got same result only with this ivtc option....im sure i converted alot of vc1 movie before and alot of them was 29,970 frame... because all bd disc are at that frame rate...
there msut be something wrong with the new verision of bd rebuilder... the previous 2 movie lethal weapon 1 and 2 were converted using 03604 version and no ivtc option selected... so im sure now it depends from 03703... it's impossible that 2 movie of a box works fine and third movie got error in video encoding... the only thing changed is bd rebuilder... maybe can you check with lethal weapon 3 if you have????

its simple... the only thing sure is that with previous version of bd rebuilder i never got error in encoding... now since 03703 was out with invert telecining option set by default i got troubles in encoding letahl weapon... maybe i think bdrb wants to pull down frame to pal standard and its useless because bd normally have 29,97 frames.... i never changed anything in my system and now since this beta is out i got error! tomorrow i will try to encode another bd this time an avc video instead of a vc1! roberto ebnigni's movie piccolo diavolo was converted right with no issue but it was 24 frames vc1. the troubles i think comes from pull down.... previous version doesnt have ivyc option and i never got any error in over 50 movie converted to bd25 size... i hope that they will solve this issue and make another beta without ivtc option useless.... if i disable i got black screen in encoded video! so i forced to keep it but got issue in encoding...
hope someone can explain me why this happens... i repeat im on win 7 64 bit and i use an imac 2,80 ghz dual core with ati radeon xt2600 graphic card....
thx....

I had x264.exe crash during a rebuild, so I had BD-RB "Abort," then closed it, then rebooted since the pc had been on for days, and when I tried to resume, BD-RB asks if I want to delete the non-empty working folder, I click "no", and it comes to a dead stop, "aborted by user." I thought it was generally able to pick up where it left off, at least it always had in the past. Is this normal?

Rather than take a chance resuming, I just tell it to delete files, and start over. Why take a chance and have it muck things up. Though I do trust Dvd rebuilder to resume. One day, I will trust BD rebuilder, but not yet. At least in this respect ;)

One day I will understand, but currently, I do not understand the following terms:
Telecining
Pulldown
IVTC

When ever I have had a crash or a power failure and have to restart BD_Rebuilder, I make sure that the encoding parameters (ie: playlist, audio & subs) are "EXACTLY" the same as when BD_RD was running before. When I click resume it will go to the last completed stage and then continue. If doing movie only with just one mpls in the playlist it will go back and restart at PASS 2 even if it was almost finished with PASS 2. Are you saying that when you resume BD_RB it will restart at "EXACTLY" where it crashed? I wish mine would do that! I recently had a power failure and was 8 hrs into a rebuild and had to restart pass 2 for another 8 hrs. But it at least didn't make me redo pass 1, so the "RESUME" does work and save some time, thanks to this feature.

Not that it really matters but when backing up in Alternate Output Mode to mpeg-2 DVD the log reports
- Convert: 1280x720, 23.976fps, 12'542 frames
The source is 1920 x 1080 23.976fps and the DVD target is 720 x 576, 25fps (for PAL) so the log is a bit irritating.

If it asks you that question, it means the settings aren't the same as when you started the encode and it whould have to start over for the new settings to have effect. If you say "No", you are saying you don't want it to continue in that process. If you desire, you can then change your settings to match those used for the original encode, and it will pick up where it left off. The whole purpose of asking that question is to ensure you don't "accidentally" delete your working folder and restart when that wasn't your intention.

All I have is praise for this software. I have done about 10 movies - mainly BD-5 and a few BD-9. Yesterday I did Transformers II to BD-25. I kept the original HD Audio track (no downmixing to AC3). The main movie without the extras is 39.7Gb. The process took 7.5 hours and the end result was undistinguishible from the original. All my other back ups have been perfect too - playable on the PC and a PS2. jdobbs - thank you for your efforts and dedication. A donation will be forthcoming.

First of all, J Dobbs, much appreciation for your efforts, I can't tell you how well DVD RB has worked out for me.

At any rate, with BD RB, I only compress to what will fit on a 25 Gb BD, never to a DVD. I have tried the automatic as well as high quality encoder settings when I try to make a complete disk backup, removing only extraneous audio and subtitle tracks. In every case when the resulting BD rom is played on the standalone Sony player, motion is not smooth though the audio seems to be in perfect synch and the image is crystal clear. Could there be a problem with some of the settings I'm using? Much appreciation for any help you can give me...Greg

sorry i dont explained it well... i reinstalled win7 abd then i installed the right version of your codec in the first post... inspect.exe result in ok to all codec and set correctly... but when i encode lethal weapon 3 which is vc1 29,97 frames i got this issue... so now i must assume that the people who backup this movie made a mistake because a friedn of mine told me that standard for blue ray is 24 frames as the origianl source!
how can i solve this issue? i dont have a codec issue... they are all set correct and installed in the right way...
when i start encoding the movie i got "invert telecining in effect" in the log box on every extra and main movie
