Is it possible at all to make a directshow filter or update Gabest's Vobsub so that it would show srt/sub subtitles in Vista & WMP11 while keeping DXVA?

1. There are some problems with Mpeg Splitter (using MPC Video Decoder with DXVA). About 50% of my h.264 Blu-rays won't play (black screen, works fine with Haali).
2. I use MPC-HC's avi2ac3filter.ax with Haali/MPC Mpeg Splitter so that I can use Microsoft DTV/DVD Audio Decoder for decoding and I get no sound when using Mpeg Splitter (again works fine with Haali).
mpegsplitter.ax -> avi2ac3filter.ax -> msdtvadec.dll (M2TS with DTS. No Sound, WMP can't find codec to decode audio.)
matroskasplitter.ax -> avi2ac3filter.ax -> msdtvadec.dll (MKV with DTS. Works)
Haali Media Splitter -> avi2ac3filter.ax -> msdtvadec.dll (M2TS with DTS. Works)
Is there any chance these being fixed?

@Joniii
It's not possible because Vobsub merges the video with the subs forcing software decoding while mpc hc internal subs renderer use hardware to place the subs on top of the video allowing both sw or hw decoding.
@ashlar42
Also, when I press CTRL+F it does not go out of the Fullscreen Direct3D mode. I have to quit MPC to exit. Is it normal?
Yes it is because it's like a forced fullscreen that cannot go to windowed mode, you have to close the video (CRTL+C) or close MPC HC (ALT+F4).

The option is called "Use Exclusive Fullscreen with VMR9 Renderless mode".
Inmatrix website describes it like this:
"When the video renderer is set to VMR9 Renderless, enabling this checkbox enables "Exclusive Fullscreen" mode. This means that when Zoom Player goes fullscreen, it prevents background applications from accessing the monitor. This can improve image smoothness with bad drivers, but at the cost of eliminating access to background application and even to Zoom Player's own navigation interfaces. Use with care."
In the help section on the website it mentions:
"VMR9: Renderless
This is the most complex VMR9 rendering mode. It can work in Direct3D exclusive mode which means the entire machine is set to fullscreen and no background application are allowed access to the video hardware. Under Direct3D Exclusive Mode, less CPU is required to play videos and depending on the resolution of the video, playback may be smoother. The downside is that in Direct3D Exclusive mode, your computer is wholly dedicated to video playback and you won't be able to perform any other tasks."
I'd say it's the same thing.
Yes it is the same thing and it's better then how it is implemented in Zoomplayer because it supports dynamic switching, which MPC-HC still doesn't support.
and it does that for pretty long already the first 2 Player that supported this mode where MPC-HC and Zoomplayer though Zoomplayer since the beginning supports dynamic switching.

So DXVA + text subtitles won't be possible ever? How about making new DS Filter for PGS subs?

my audio is oos (~700ms) when i use evr custom. with evr it's ok.
system: vista sp1 64bit, GA-MA790GP-DS4H (onboard ati 3300), 4GB ram, AMD X2 4850e
mpc-hc x86 (up-to-date), using the internal splitters and video decoder, ffdshow for spdif.
it happens with different videos. tested mkv and blu-ray(vc-1, avc)
can someone help me please?]no one? :confused:
Try using ffdshow for the video as well (disable the internal video decoder)... does it help?
no
evr custom in direct3d mode is better (audio is almost sync, but not with every video). where is the error?

Is the chroma upsampling quality of EVR Custom same as standard EVR?
My desktop switched to vista recently, so EVR must be used for DXVA.
I noticed that the chroma upsampling quality of EVR Custom is horrible, while the quality of standard EVR (and Haali renderer etc.) is superb.
At first, I thought there might be something wrong with the resizer, but none of the resizer option is really related to this issue.
here is a sample capture:

Since Pan&Scan doesn't work with standard EVR, sometimes I still want to use EVR Custom, but this issue prevents me from doing so.

It seems to be a problem with the internal mpeg splitter (r814). Every .m2ts file with DTS-HD audio i play has distorted sound and plays in slower speed. I tested with latest ffdshow (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1190683#post1190683) with proper DTS-HD support. Playing individual DTS-HD samples is no problem.

+1. The video is way too bright when using Custom EVR. It forces me to use the standard EVR. I'm using Vista x64+SP1 w/ nVidia Geforce 8800GT (Forceware 178.13).
To show it well in the screenshots, I added black borders above and below the video in ffdshow. Imade the video "touch the window from inside" and resized the player so it would show the "true" black near the video.

That brightness issue (PC vs. TV levels) is a common issue. There are several workarounds for it. For example the "16-235 -> 0-255" shader in MPC.

Nice find. This is a serious problem, because ATI actually DOES progressive chroma upsampling in VMR7 and EVR, but not in VMR9, VMR7/9 Renderless and EVR Custom. You can use Leak's YV12 chroma upsampling shader, but it'd not be neccessary.

Change dynamic range setting in nvidia control panel to correct that.Well, playing w/ the nVidia settings might be another workaround, but I rather turn on the built-in "16-235 -> 0-255" shader and keep the default values (http://i37.tinypic.com/1gpsug.png).
I tried looking into the code... and It's a mess. Wow.
1) I have to learn DirectX programming first.
2) The MPC-HC code is very hard to read. Nothing is documented... The syntax is formatted very badly and is not arranged nicely in the .h/.cpp files.

Use the 32 bit version of MPC-HC. The x64 version can of course only use 64 bit DirectShow filters, which Haali and CoreAVC aren't.

As I said previously VMR 9 mode now works with the 8.9 catalyst hotfix drivers on my MSI 2600 HD 256 MB AGP card (without any regtweaks whatsoever). Are you using the remove-tearing feature of MPC-HC v.1.1.604.0? I just did a quick test with test video file 1 from http://ranpha.wordpress.com/page-1/ and I also get frame jumping if I don't set the remove-tearing option. I also have the the Lock back-buffer enabled.
Have you tried removing all your (reg)tweaks, running Driver Cleaner in safe mode and then installing Catalyst 8.9 hotfix drivers?
Hi, well i tried just about everything including the above. No luck! If you use the direct 3d (remove tearing) option for VMR 9 there is another problem: Reclock does not work anymore. And i still get the frame jumping, only its not as often and as obvious as before. But it is still there. Try something with a high bitrate - e.g. "This is England" on BD. I also tried 8.3 Catalyst with no luck.
So my experiences are:
Catalyst 8.3: VMR 9 Frame Jumping and blue screens when one heavily seeks in a high bitrate bd file
Catalyst 8.4. Hotfix: the same
catalyst 8.5 Hotfix: No blue screens, but frame jumping in vmr 9 renderless
Catalyst 8.9 Hotfix: VMR 9 frame jumping (but not very severe and only on high bitrate titles) and sadly i also managed to crash the system when seeking - but only once...
This is all for an AGP Card. VMR7 works fine with DXVA, catalyst 8.5 and reclock so thats what i am using now. The strange thing is that cyberlinkpowerdvd (build 3104) also uses VMR 9 renderless with DXVA and works perfectly with all the above drivers.
I am not so sure its the catalyst driver anymore - could also be something else.... any ideas...

casshern

I know about the workarounds... but what about a real fix? (finding the code that has the bug)
It's not a bug in the code. It has to do with the specs for TV's and PC computer displays being different.
If anything, you should have used Colormatrix on your encodes, that way, everything will stay in the correct brightness. However, as everyone else mentioned, there are ways to fix it with out color matrix. I know that there are a couple of people who like to use Avisynth through ffdshow to do it, specifically using the Ulevels(present="tv2pc") function.

Yes, it does. Select "DirectDraw" as hardware access method on the "Video settings" page, which also is the default setting nowadays.

I'm having a weird problem with MPC-HC and this seems like the best place to ask about it.
Before I explain the problem I'm going to give you all the information about my setup just in case it helps:
OS: Vista
CPU: C2D E8400
GPU: 8800GT
Sound Card: Integrated Realtek High Definition Audio
Latest version of CCCP (Stable)
MPC-HC v1.1.796.0
Using Haali renderer with MPC-HC for video
Using Default DirectSound Device for audio
The problem I'm having is with an anime series done in MKV(H.264/Vorbis). This particular series uses ordered chapters. Each episode's chapters are as follows: Intro-OP-PartA-PartB-ED-Next Ep. Preview. Each episode is whole, however, except for the OP which was separated in order to save space. The problem I'm noticing is a slight freeze/hitch that takes place each time the video is transitioning to the next chapter. It is very slight but can be very apparent under the right circumstances. For example, one of the episodes fades to black as it ends just before the ED begins playing. As I mentioned previously, this is a point in the video where chapters are switched. The fade to black should be consistent, however, this problem is apparent as the fade slightly freezes/hitches for a split second and then continues. While trying to figure out this problem I went back to check other chapters and sure enough it happens at each chapter transition.
Ok, now some more about what I learned and why I'm asking in the MPC-HC thread. I have discovered 3 ways to correct the problem. 1.) Change video renderers. With EVR custom pres. and VMR7 the freeze/hitch is not present. This leads me to believe the problem is with the Haali renderer. This is quite disappointing as I prefer it much more than the alternatives. However, the next thing is what makes me think it may have more to do with MPC-HC. 2.) The problem isn't present if I use Zoom Player and the Haali renderer. This is what really makes me think it is related to MPC-HC. 3.) Finally, the weirdest thing I have noticed is that I can avoid the problem with MPC-HC/Haali if I don't plug my headphones in! :\
I don't use speakers with my PC, only my headphones. So if I try and use MPC-HC with nothing plugged in I get the warning about some pins missing and having a sound issue. Yet the stutter/freeze isn't present. Of course I have no problem with sound when the headphones are in. I just get the stutter/freeze with the video that I've mentioned. Seems like a weird problem. Sorry for the long post. I hope I've posted enough information and hopefully someone has had a similar problem and can help me. :thanks:

which catalyst do you use that works? I tried 8.3, 8.4, 8.5, 8.9....
Interestingly:
The cyberlink decoder with DXVA works with VMR 9 (renderless) in PowerDVD
but even the cyberlink decoder gives the same jumping frames in zoomplayer/mediaplayer hc when using VMR 9 renderless and DXVA
I think the problem has two components:
1) somehow Powerdvd initializes VMR 9 renderless differently to MPC HC (and ZOOMPLAYER) so it works regardless of catalyst driver
2) certain versions of catalyst driver (yours) work with the initialization of VMR 9 by MPC HC and ZOOMPLAYER
But as 8.9 doesnt work for me with VMR 9, maybe ATI thinks that powerdvds initilization is the correct way.... maybe that should be incorporated in MPC HC...

Crasher Bug in Rev. >807 when playing DVDs
------------------------------------------
When I try to open DVDs with "File" ---> "Open DVD"
or "File" ---> "Open Disc", MPC crashes (see screenshot).
This does not happen with all DVDs, but at least with
most of them (i.e. ~ 80%).
Playing DVD still works in rev 807, and it crashes
in all revisions >807 (i.e. 808,809,... etc.)
Now, if we have a quick look at the changelog it says for
rev 808:
NEW : Command lines "/dvdpos title#chapter" and "/dvdpos title#hh:mm:ss.ff" to start playback to position
CHANGED: Number of file and DVD position increase from 5 to 20 (req #1819709)
CHANGED: Bypass of UOPs for DVD (req #1811508). This feature didn't works for x64 build
These changes DO look suspicious, so most likely something
went wrong there.
Can anyone confirm this ?

Hi !
There is any way to automatically change the refresh speed of the monitor where the file is to be played ?
I use an LCD monitor as principal and my Z2000 as secondary, but I always have to use mediainfo to see the framerate of the file, then change it using the catalyst control center, and then play the film.
It would be fantastic to play the file and MPC to change automatically the refresh speed of the screen where it is displayed.
In the options, I've seen there the possibility to change the resolution, but the options showed are only for the main monitor, I suppose, because I don't see any HD resolution. And this affects to the refresh speed to but we will have the same problem.
Here in Spain is very frequent to have files at 25 fps and at 23,967.
It would be ideal to have a table like for files
at use
23,976 24 fps
24 24 fps
25 50 fps
30 60 fps
....
Because there are people without 24 fps ready displays.

Anyone know why I get choppy .m2ts playback with the latest builds from xvidvideo.ru? It's not the internal decoders, because when I use Haali as the splitter, no matter what video and audio filters I use, it plays back perfectly. But as soon as I use the internal mpchc ts splitter everything is choppy for m2ts, no matter. If I use the mpc splitter in zoomplayer instead of haali, m2ts playback is choppy in there as well.

When you have MPCHT running and click Help\Home page you get to a page to do with Sourceforge. Logically (to my strange way of thinking), as there is no obvious link there to a forum, I went looking for help in Sourceforge.
A Google led me to a Doom forum which seemed to be more appropriate.
I ask (on Doom) if a link from the MPCHC Homesite would be a good idea.

In Vista before the SP1 EVR was showing washed out picture and EVR CP was ok but after sp1 the wahsed out one was evr cp.
The setting in the nvidia control panel will only affect vmr and evr making it look correct unless you are already doing corretion in software.
@AspectRadio
Regarding the op and ed in separated files if you use haali splitter you can enable "try to open linked files", it's in input in the splitter options.
Then they will play as one file.
@ashlar42
Dynamic switching means that it can switch between exclusive mode and normal mode without having to close the video/graph.
@warrenvur
The tearing test and the anti-tearing option are different things. Both require VMR our EVR CP. That is normal.

Well, if I recall correctly... there was a bug in Vista pre-SP1 regarding the brightness of the video. The fix was on both the OS side (SP1) and newer Nvidia drivers. Maybe MPC-HC did some software-side correction back in the day that is not needed anymore? Maybe. I have no clue. I'm still learning COM, DirectX, and the MPC-HC code.
All this information still doesn't explain why regular EVR works fine and custom EVR doesn't. As far as I understand, when using custom EVR, MPC-HC provides its own mixer and presenter COM objects (unlike regular EVR). Maybe the bug is in one of them.

Dumb question: the bicubic resizer could be lower than A=-1.0 (i.e. A=-1.25)?

DTSWAV files only produce static (well, this one at least): http://p2.hostingprod.com/@music-blu-ray.com/BWV208.rar

"A=-1.0" is the highest value possible, i.e., the most sharp possible, AFAIK.

808,809,... etc.)
Does anyone experience crash when opening a dvd movie with the svn 818?
Is it fixed in this build ? :

I have all sorts of problems playing DVDs. I can't navigate through menus, can't make it to play with subtitles.
Regarding dvd menus, try changing the output renderer. I had that problem about a year ago, and I think switching to VMR7 (renderless) fixed it. YMMV.
