When I play .mkv files I have the possibility to drop CoreAVC (software decoding) and let my card do the decoding. I can achieve this by check the 2 boxes H264/AVC in the Internal Filters/Transform Filters in MPC-HC correct?

Be aware that not all .mkv files will be hardware-decoding compatible.

So, sometimes you may need to do software decoding.

This is why the most practical upgrade is a faster processor and CoreAVC, and thus avoiding the " 2008-2009 hardware decoder bubble ". ;)

Can anyone confirm?

WMV decoding seems to be broken in Windows7, i get a "this application has crashed" screen.

Happens with latest SVN and Beliyaal build.

Works with the Windows Media Player version that is included with windows 7

EDIT:
Looks like MPC-HC is unable to connect to WMVideo decoder DMO

(Note that WMAudio decoder DMO does connect)

Different renderers do not help, i tried EVR CP, EVR, DX9, all crash

It could be a drivers problem... your drivers date is very close to the DirectX update, so it could exist any incompatibility... maybe it's better trying with the latest... I think it's catalyst 9.3 (I hava an NVidia 8600GT)

Not everyone that uses the INI file is necessarily running MPC as a portable app. They may be running it from program files or any other location with restricted file permissions. So there may not be access rights to write the playlist file.

I think it would be a good idea to store the playlist location in the INI file. Allowing users to store it in any desired location.

I've used the registry patch to up the number of Ref frames MPC-HC will accept using DXVA to 15 (1f), but now it gives a rather annoying warning message for all those files. Including when Windows creates thumbnails :-( Not very practical and rather annoying.
How do I remove the warning message?

Hi,

I've problem with DXVA or internal H264 filter.
The following video cannot be played correctly using the latest MPC 1014. It's like a lot of frames were missing.
I've tried using coreavc and I don't have the problem.

Use "16" value in hex it's "21" in decimal and no warnings will pop up.

OK, I need a help or at least push to a right direction.

Starting from version somewhere between 900 and 920 (900 is still OK)
I'm having a problem with MPCHC on my HTPC:

Radeon HD 3200
Vista 32 Ultimate
Catalyst 8.5
EVR custom
latest directX runtime
(except AC3filter there are no external codecs )

MPC crashes like a crazy with h.264 video. Well known message:

"The instruction at (various) referenced memory at (various).
The mem couldn't be read. Click OK to terminate"

Most often it happens during opening movie.
Sometimes (depends of a MPC version) movie can be played 2-3 times but
when crash starts I must open some XVID movie to be able to load mkv again
(like xvid "purges" some mem, buffers or whatever went wrong)

Sometimes is enough to pause movie and change channel on TV (so EDID
handshake starts again via HDMI) to have it crashed

Never saw anyone here reports something like this, can be a problem on my
side only but versions below 900 are OK and above problematic (including the latest 1014
which is one of the most stable)

I'm reluctant to new video drivers as 9.1 was not able to install catalyst centre
and I had other problems with.

Any suggestions?

You mean it's not a problem or "transferring" to mkv is a solution to solve the problem?

He means, you should remux the file from avi to mkv to fix the problem completely.

The avi container was never meant to support h264 and many filters have problems supporting this correctly.

Ok thanks I understand now.
I think I'll simply use CoreAVC which don't care about avi container.
It's more simple for me to watch this file than remux first.

is possible for mpc-hc to use internal dvxa decoder for supported file AND switch to another decoder (like core-avc) for NON dvxa compatible file ?

There's separate options for DXVA and FFmpeg decoding for H.264 and VC-1; just disable the FFmpeg ones and it should use whatever other decoder you have installed in case DXVA isn't used.

Same video, just moved from monitor1 to monitor2. It is 1080p downscaled to fit into display resolution (both monitors cannot take 1080p directly). Seems like MPCHC code doesn't properly rebuild the chain in such cases both in VMR9 and EVRCP here. However Haali works as required...

Hy, i have samsung hd-ready lcd-tv what is capable to display 720p 50hz or 60hz, and 1080 25i or 30i signal. My VGA is ATI HD4870
My problem: when i try play movie what have 23.976, or 23.98, or 24hz fps, then the film is not played nice, not liquid, little-little bit jerky.
My display setted up to 720p60.
I have sanyo pt-ax100e 720p beamer, what is capable to 1080 24p.

How can i set up MPC-HC, and catalyst cointrol center to play best visible quality my 23.98, 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97, 30fps movies?
Or always must change refresh rate, or can i set something to change refresh rate the best possible quality?

Thanks for help.

24p content on a 60hz display will always look jerky, because you need to apply 3:2 cadence to display 24p content on a 60p display.

This means the frames are displayed a bit like this:

111223334455566

So the motion is uneven and its very noticeable on pans.

Only way to make it nice is to get a display that can do 24hz native, or a multiple thereof like 48hz or 72hz.

Beware of anybody claiming they do "higher" and that "higher" is better, because it aint necessarily so.

and any speed up to 25 hz?
because my tv can 720p 50hz, and when i speed up the film to 25p, then must look good.
how can i make this with mpc-hc?
and the dts or dd sound can i speed up too?

New version (Link in signature):
* Updated to lastest SVN
* Fixed: Stutters minimized (EVR only). Tested matrix: (23.976fps, 24fps, 25fps, 50fps, 59.94ps) x (23.796Hz, 24Hz, 47.952Hz, 50Hz, 59.94Hz, 60Hz)
* Fixed: Normal VSync now stutters less (not at all hopefully) as the VSync pre wait has a larger margin (5 ms instead of 1.8 ms)
* Fixed: VMR9 crash when not using mixer mode.
* Fixed: When Aero is enabled the screen no longer flickers or crash when using full screen mode.
* Fixed: Options dialog and other dialog no longer appear on the fullscreen window, unless fullscreen gui support is enabled.
* Fixed: 10 bit dislay mode now works in fullscreen mode.
* Changed: VSync position when desktop composition is enabled moved to middle of screen, instead of top of screen.

This version is a candidate for submitting the patches to SVN. If no mayor problems are found with this build I will aim at submitting everything to SVN next weekend.

Please report any problems and discuss this build in the link in signature.

While using MPC-HC I noticed a strange OSD in my screen while doing anything, the command is referred in the corner of the video... and I can't get rid of it. I never saw such thing while using the normal MPC. Is there a way to solve that?

Only works with Vista and later from what I understand.

I'm not sure if the driver is outputting the 10 bit signal over HDMI (4870 has HDMI 1.3), but now at least they have software to test it with. Also it could help with color resolution when outputting with YCrCb format (8YUV->10RGB->8YCrCB is better than 8YUV->8RGB->8YCrCB). Also analog displays can support 10 bit resolution because they are analog.

Dear developers! There is an option in Options - Playback - Change fullscreen resolution(to some fixed resolution/refresh). It would be great if the player could set refresh automatically, depending on video fps(23.976fps -> 24hz refresh; 25fps -> 50hz).

Just reposting a bug I reported a few weeks back along with another audio bug.

Bug 1) Dolby True HD within .ts file, the front right channel is inaudible. Using ffdshow audio decoder there is no problem, only mpc-hc decoder has the problem.
Bug 2) I have just been playing some DVD's and notice I am having problems with DTS decoding using the built in decoder. Playing DTS within a DVD I get a media connection type: unknown (giving silence when passing uncompressed audio through ffdshow and only a few channels without ffdshow in the chain). Again decoding in ffdshow is fine, no problems. This DTS problem effects me on Vista 32 and Vista 64 so its not just a current setup problem. I have the DTS decoder settings set to 3 front 2 rear, and LFE on as usually works fine.

Hi guys,

Stupid question: what do I lose if I use just the MPCHC exe, without the dlls that are packed with it (apart from the translations)?

Feature request : ArcSoft VC1 Decoder connectivity.

Greetings Casimir.

At the moment, MPC's internal splitter will only connect to ArcSoft's Video Decoder for H264 content, but not VC1. In another thread, Jay Bee has provided an inter connect filter to enable this:

Ok, here's a zip with four different versions of VC-1 Tweaker. They connect the

Arcsoft Video decoder to the VC-1 pin of either Haali Media Splitter, Haali Media Splitter (AR), MPC

Mpeg Splitter or MPC Mpeg Source.

They all have different names and GUIDs so they can be installed at the same time.

The ArcSoft VC1 Decoder is great especially for interlaced contents. Would be most grateful if you could kindly consider adding this feature in your future updates.

Attached are pin info for Arcsoft Demux and Decoder.

Many thanks and best regards.

First of all thanks to the MPC-HC developers for a fantastic player which I never fail to recommend.

Now I'm having problems playing from a NAS. A 2hr 4.5Gb video file might be copied from the NAS to the local hard drive in 10mins, so bandwidth is approx 10 times more than necessary. But when playing on MPC-HC direct from the NAS, there is trouble with stuttering resulting from buffer underruns. This happens on many files with some variation in the bitrate that causes problems, with the files in general using the internal MPC-HC decoder with DXVA active.

Any ideas how to fix this? I've tried changing the buffer settings but it doesn't do much good. It's a gigabit connection with jumbo enabled but speed is limited by the NAS; nevertheless it should be several times faster than necessary. Thanks for any help.

Edit: was using the released version, not current SVN; problem fixed
