@testuo55 & ar-jar,

Can I ask you to take a look at this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=18218591#post18218591) over @AVS Forums. Please read down the rest of the page from the linked post. If you were bored you could also read back over the last 48 hours of posts; Especially this (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=18215124&postcount=5558).

I have not really seen any other discussion on this around Doom or AVS Forums but it does appear that Overlay on W7 has been substantially improved and commercial Blu-ray players are using this to almost spectacular effect, almost by accident. Even PDVD7 seems to benefit and I am sure it does not have W7 support built in.

I know it is not EVR sync related but, ar-jar, as our resident renderer dev (:)) it may be there is something simple that can be done to assure a greatly improved Overlay renderer on W7. It may be many of these benefits are already there for some cards (or even all, it is a bit early to say)! Worth a look I think.

Jong: I am reading and it's interesting. As you guessed, my time is currently limited as I'm working on a better full-screen function for Sync Renderer so this is rather low on my prio list. The virtual dub guy didn't seem too impressed but then again, he was using a RC version. -A

Perhaps you got an old version of DirectShow Spy installed?
http://alax.info/blog/1111

Yes you are right; unregistering January build and re-installing and re-registering daily build fixed the issue;

:thanks: a lot.

The black bar shouldn't be visible when no video is playing. Can't resize it either.

It really seems like for every code change there is to fix a bug, two more bugs pop up.

found; fixed; thx

changing something in one area breaks another unrelated one.

The devs try to commit real fixes though, with additional refactoring over time this behaviour should lessen or maybe even stop

The virtual dub guy didn't seem too impressed but then again, he was using a RC version. -AThanks ar-jar, the discussion has moved on and now it seems the benefits are not so much in the W7 enhancements as just the fact they are using a hardware overlay surface with EVR, which, if YCbCr is selected as the output pixel format, allows YCbCr to travel untouched to the display - no conversion to RGB and back, no level expansion and contraction that does cause banding and no exposure to driver bugs doing the colour translation to/from YCbCr and RGB. It brings a standard renderer, with DXVA much closer to MadVR.

It is all good, but what no one can say is if the only reason they can do this is because they are exploiting the PVP, which I guess is hard for an open source player to do, or if it is possible to renderer EVR to an overlay surface even without PVP.

When you have the time.....!

Hey, guys!

I've found a problem with the newest Forceware drivers (196.75) and any new MPC-HC rev: EVR-CP and EVR Sync, but not EVR or HR or any others, are both hanging, freezing, and stuttering badly playing any type of video. It's only after re-initializing the display (e.g. by turning VSync on or off) that it plays smoothly -- until I try to seek anywhere in the video, then it goes out of whack again.

Of course, reverting to 196.34 resolves this. Is this of any concern to the MPC-HC devs or is this simply NVIDIA doing something stupid again?
Also, has anyone else encountered this yet?

Yeah. I mentioned it on IRC but I was the only one who had the same problem as you describe. I'd say it's a problem on the Nvidia side since downgrading the driver fixes the problem.

In build 1718, 3 of my AVI videos caused the player to open with the window width equal to the screen resolution width and a fixed height.
It only happens when "remember last window size" is checked.
(Last window size is not screen resolution width)

Most of my other videos still obey the last window size.

I had always locked the window size to a small window with "remember last window size" and no auto zoom
And all videos had obeyed the fixed last window size.

Was fine in builds before 1718, checked with 1705 and the 3 problem videos didn't change the last window size in 1705.

Ok I solved this one by deleting the settings in the registry.

That happens to me too..
The easiest way I found was after the video start press "O" to enter options menu and then "enter" right after. Takes one second and solves the problem..
Must be a Nvidia driver problem.

Edit: Switched back to 196.34 and the stuttering still exists, but at least it doesn´t hang/crash lots of times like with the newest drivers.

Hello,

I'm trying to compile MPC-HC (following the guide on the wiki) but I have errors related to a file from Windows SDK v7.0. It starts with "error C2146: erreur de syntaxe*: absence de ';' avant l'identificateur 'ADDRINFOT' C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0\include\ws2tcpip.h". I use Windows XP SP3.

Does someone know how to deal with this kind of errors ?

Thanks in advance,

You have to set Windows SDK v7.0 as the default SDK. The SDK configuration tool has a major bug so you can't use it. If you read the instructions on the wiki you'll find this (http://blogs.msdn.com/windowssdk/archive/2009/08/21/windows-sdk-configuration-tool-may-report-an-error-when-os-display-format-is-not-english.aspx) link. So if you have installed Win SDk v7.0 in %PROGRAMFILES%, open a cmd window and do this:

CALL "H:\progs\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\VC\vcvarsall.bat" x86 (or open the Visual Studio 2008 Command Prompt)

"%PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0\Setup\WindowsSdkVer.exe" -q -version:v7.0

I have the same problem. Windows 7 32bit. Also another person who was on Windows Vista couldn't reproduce the problem so it might be a Windows 7 specific bug.

Thanks for your answer !

I followed the instructions on the wiki (change the language, etc ....). I've just tried yours in case it works better but it always shows the same errors related to "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0\include\ws2tcpip.h", "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0\include\atlsocket.h" and others from the SDK ...

Did you successfully set SDK v7.0 as the default? If not of course you'll get the same errors. Try again with the cmd I posted but remove the -q switch.
If everything goes well you'll get the following:

The Windows SDK Configuration Tool has successfully set Windows SDK version v7.0
as the current version for Visual Studio 2008.
Press return key to exit....

Like I said there's something wrong with your SDK configuration. I can reproduce the exact errors with SDK v6.0A. If I switch to v7.0 there's no problem. Close any MSVS windows and then try to change the SDK. YOu shouldn't have any problem.

I've got Win7 x64. It seems to be specific to Windows 7, as XhmikosR stated, as I couldn't reproduce it on a 32-bit XP and Vista 64-bit machine either.

@decapitado: Are you sure you're following proper uninstallation procedure (uninstall, Driver Sweeper + registry cleaning in safe mode)? Reverting like that fixes it completely for me. Maybe you've got some left-over files messing with your new install.
Also, I don't understand how it only affects you with auto-refresh rate on. I've tried messing with everything; only re-initializing the display fixes it temporarily. I've also tried it on another Win7 x64 machine here: It's the exact same.

This is one strange bug, but Win7 people on Guru3D also seem to experience this.

XP x64, RADEON 3850+GeForce 8500, VMR9 Renderless
1) Selecting D3D9 Render Device 8500, player window on display, attached to Radeon 3850, open file - player hang up (both x32 and x64).
2) Selected D3D9 Render Device 3850, player window on 2nd display, attached to same videocard, open file - player hang up (both x32 and x64).
3) Got two displays, attached to Radeon 3850, and one to GeForce 8500, in D3D9 Render Device see only Radeon 3850 \\.\DISPLAY1 and GeForce 8500 \\.\DISPLAY2, is that expected behavior, or there must be Radeon 3850 \\.\DISPLAY3? In Fullscreen section I can choose any of this 3 displays.
4) Turned off D3D9 Render Device, start playing video on display, attached to Radeon 3850, moved player window on display, attached to GeForce 8500, in MPC Video Decoder properties "Video card" section still shows info about Radeon 3850, not GeForce 8500. With D3D9 Render Device set to GeForce 8500, "Video card" section shows correct info about that card

Using build 1718, still problems with going into fullscreen mode maybe 5% of the time. See image below with areas around the image and taskbar is visible.

Actually, it seems to happen only when mpc-hc is maximized, and then screen is double clicked / put into fullscreen mode.

Hello MPC-HC team. I am not an expert but, I found that I was having excessive delays in Matroska (MKV) files loading with the MPC - Matroska Source standalone filter. And I think, I am sorry If I am completely off base, but, I think that the registration processes may be incomplete (I use the standard regsvr32 filter.ax process).

What I have found is that the actual Source filter is not being set in the registry. Instead it continues to use the Microsoft File Source (Async.) which takes forever to, I guess, buffer the file before providing it to the MKV splitter. What I have done on my system is to edit the registry as follows

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Media Type\{e436eb83-524f-11ce-9f53-0020af0ba770}\{1AC0BEBD-4D2B-45AD-BCEB-F2C41C5E3788}]
"Source Filter1"="{E436EBB5-524F-11CE-9F53-0020AF0BA770}" <-- renamed original Source Filter to Source Filter1, This CLSID is for Microsoft File Source (Async.)
"Source Filter"="{0A68C3B5-9164-4A54-AFAF-995B2FF0E0D4}" <-- Replaced with MPC - Matroska Source CLSID

Now MKVs load in seconds not minutes.

I also completed the same basic process for MPEG PS files since with graphstudio/graphedit was loading .vob/.mpg (Program Steam) files with the Microsoft MPEG-2 Demultiplexer which does not support DTS it seems and was breaking my VOB playback

After these changes I am far happier with my Home Theater PC. Even If I am complete against Microsoft's proceedures or practices I am happy and I hope this data helps others, and if I am not going agains Microsoft's coding practices I hope this might help to improve the standalone codecs.

EDIT: I am most likely wrong, anyone trying this be careful as there may be unexpected results.
EDIT2: I think my issue had nothing to do with the filters, I think it was due to a broken Matroska Muxer. See the only file I have trouble with shows this muxer for the writing app

Writing application : AVI-Mux GUI 1.17.7, Aug 8 2006 20:59:17
Writing library : matroska muxer by Alexander Noe, build date Aug 8 2006

Use mediainfo. You can also copy the .dll file into the MPC-HC install directory, and that will give more info in the properties dialog.

Hello,

Is it intended that the "[DXVA]" indicator of the status panel (added rev. 1095 (http://mpc-hc.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/mpc-hc?view=rev&revision=1095)) does not appear when using Overlay Mixer ?

if((!m_fAudioOnly) && (fs == State_Running))
{
CString DXVA_Text = GetDXVADecoderDescription();
if(!(_T("Not using DXVA")==DXVA_Text) || (_T("Unknown")==DXVA_Text))
UI_Text += _T(" [DXVA]");
}

The function GetDXVADecoderDescription is defined in IPinHook.cpp :

LPCTSTR GetDXVADecoderDescription()
{
return GetDXVAMode (&g_guidDXVADecoder);
}

but g_guidDXVADecoder is set by the function GetCompBufferInfoMine of the same file which does not seem to be called when using Overlay so g_guidDXVADecoder is just GUID_NULL when using Overlay.

As I don't really understand how it works (I've basic knowledge in C++ but here it's more than basics ...), I just guess it's the normal behavior when using Overlay and that the information about DXVA State has to be gotten from somewhere else (the information in the filter panel is always right so it must be possible).

The fact the indicator does not show when using Overlay Mode has always puzzled me so I decided to have a look but maybe it's just perfectly normal ... :o

I've just installed v. 1728 onto a new HTPC with windows 7 64 Bit. Previously the Ffw speed control would go up to x128 in many steps. Now, for some reason it will only go up to x4 (2 steps).

Is there a setting that alters this behaviour?

Cheers.

I'm trying to understand the function of this new option to choose the D3D rendering device. I sort of understand its purpose but it seems not to work at all.... Maybe I am wrong on what its soppost to do though. I assume it its for choosing the card that going to do DXVA decoding etc?

I have a gtx295 and gt240 and a display attached to each (TV attached to 240 via hdmi and monitor to gtx295 via dvi).

Here the new option does not seem to be doing anything different from what was happening before. For example, if I choose the gtx295 in the new option and then play a video on the TV attached to the gt240 the MPC video render still reports work its being done via the gt240 in the DXVA settings part at the bottom.

I'm on Win7 x64.

Am I missing something here?

Is MPC-HC ever going to support M-JPEG?

Most digital cameras store video as motion jpeg or motion jpeg2000 (along with pcm audio in mov container). There are two ways how to play this. One is in VLC, which sucks, and the other is in Quicktime, which sucks even more...

So it'd be really good to introduce this video codec into MPC-HC :rolleyes:

What does the .PDB file mpc-hc64.pdb that is now included in the
ZIP-file distribution from www.xvidvideo.ru do ?
Is it needed, or can it be deleted :confused:
It's a debug information file generated by Visual Studio - with it present you should be able to be able to better pinpoint where MPC-HC crashed.

But it probably was just included by mistake - unless the program crashes (and probably not before you attach a debugger) you won't notice any difference if you delete it...

thx & best regards,

A program database (PDB) file holds debugging information, used in conjunction with a minidump file to track down crashes / hangs, etc...

Yes you can delete the .pdb file, mpc-hc will run without it.

The .pdb file is used together with a minidump file to help the developer track down the cause of a bug.

So now you can begin including your minidump files in your bug report ticket.
Important: If you include minidump file(s) you need to provide revision number.

NOTE: There are some problems with producing minidump files with the '/minidump' switch (mostly in Windows Vista and 7) (we are working on the problem) but in the meantime you can use an external program.

Minidumps are one of the most useful ways to help developers track down bugs.

No mistake it was included by request.

Please add your request to the tracker (https://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/mpc-hc/newticket)

If you make bug reports, feature requests, etc.. in the forum it is a very high chance that it will get lost and forgotten so please use the tracker

try this test - http://aleksoid.tosei.ru/Dist/mpc-hc-device.select-test.7z

write what message you see after file open, if see of course :)

p.s. - and try this build - http://aleksoid.tosei.ru/Dist/mpc-hc-device.select-test-2.7z
Neither version above says anything but the problem I descibed is gone in the second file you posted :D What was the problem?#

EDIT: Damn I have reproduced again with the second version you gave me...

Using build 1718, still problems with going into fullscreen mode maybe 5% of the time. See image below with areas around the image and taskbar is visible.

Actually, it seems to happen only when mpc-hc is maximized, and then screen is double clicked / put into fullscreen mode.

Doesn't the taskbar disappear after a seconds or two ?

The taskbar automatically detects when a window is fullscreen and hides itself.

Nope this is / was a different issue, look closely, you will see some whitish bars at the left side of the image also. It seems to be fixed in Aleksoids second file he posted.

Only used to happen when maximized, then put into fullscreen mode.

Try select EVR Custom and test.
Instead of hang, player silently closes :)

Although mpc-hc arguments such as /close have been fixed recently, the ones /start and /startpos still don't work.

I have remember dvd and file position enabled, but when I play files using xbmc, I always want to start from the beginning of the movie, so I use mpc-hc as an external program with the command line argument /start 0, to start at 0 ms but I still get the movie beginning at where I left off (ie remember file position).

I think /start and /startpos should override these "remember X position" options.

About you crash - i don't have XP, can't test.
Try select EVR Custom and test.
Made additional check under Windows 7 Ultimate x64, almost same behavior, with VMR9 player silently closes, with EVR Custom it doesn't hang, but video plays very slowly, at 0,1 fps or even slower. DXVA/ffmpeg codec doesn't matter.

Win 7 x64, GTX 260 + GT 220, EVR Custom, VMR9 Renderles - all work fine at all video content with or whithout DXVA

i found a problem with my gt220 and videos who are decoded in vc-1. if i want to try vc-1 video i get a green screen and can only listen to the sound. this happens only if i try to start the video with dxva and not with ffdshow. so mayby is the dxva decoder for vc-1 videos broken? i am using win7 x64.
