Something completely different.... Is there a way to keep the pan&scan setting persistent? I would like to play all my videos stretched to 16:9 but have to set it with every video file over again. I'm using the player with media portal and setting the stretch mode every time doesn't quite work well..

Windows doesn't recognize MPC-HC full screen as full screen when paused, so when it's paused the power saving settings (if in pace) will still shut the monitor off or engage the screen saver. This doesn't happen with every other version of MPC I have used.

-There are problems with DVD navigation, some menu's are affected more than others.

-Playback of DXVA video content (all codecs, all resolutions) will sometimes lock up, a frame will keep repeating over and over, then the video continues like nothing happened.

-MPC-HC will randomly delete the external filter settings in the .ini file.

This last one seems to be fixed i'm not 100% sure yet, random macroblocking on DXVA content

first of all i want to thank the developers of MPC - HC for making such an amazing program
finally my dream of playing HD videos on my ancient computer became a reality !
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=136864

i just have a few questions to ask
with xp sp3, ati HD 2600XT and using VMR9 Renderless
i am able to play HD h264 videos profile 4.1 and lower with dxva enabled without any problems
but for profile 5.1, it seems that only 720p videos work
dxva doesn't seem to work with 1080p videos (hardware acceleration doesn't work)
is this normal ?
doesn't dxva support profile 5.1 h264 1080p videos ?

Hi. First of all thanks for great player.
I also want to ask about decoding 1080p with 5.1 profile.
Besides what bothers me is why playing movies with DVXA in window mode is slowed down (audio is ok)? (in fullscreen everything works fine)

Well actualy stretching a person in the vertical direction usualy makes them thinner.. And yes, it would be nice if it's possible to make the pan&scan persistent.. If I remember correctly, in the past this was the case?

You do not have any level 5.1 file's, you're files are mislabeled as 5.1. (5.1 file's have resolutions of over 2000 pixels in height)

You are probably running into other issues such as non-mod16 height and/or width or more likely to many ref frames.
Maybe this should be added to the startpage....

Sorry, usually "stretching" to a 16x9 screen means to make 4x3 wider...

Yeah.. probably, that's not the question though.. I want to gid rid of the black bars on top and bottom (stretch in the vertical direction, as said) and keep that setting persistent. I only watch 16:9 stuff, but even that has sometimes black bars on top or bottom..

Or should I post this in another topic maybe?

With mpc-hc 32 bit latest build i have no dxva acceleration

http://i31.tinypic.com/517n92.jpg

but with the same movie with mpc-hc 64 bit (version 1.1.0.0 ) i have dxva - is the same video

http://i27.tinypic.com/205iix.jpg

Is this issue because I am using a 64bit os and of course 64bit video drivers (catalyst 8.4 64bit)? or is something within mpc?

One more thing. Is there any way to add delay to subtitles when they are rendered by mpc-hc engine (like it is in directvobsub) or i have to correct the timings before with lets say subtitle workshop and then watch them.

this file has only one problem, but MPC-HC has a workaround for it:

Due to the workaround this file does work, however any player that is enforcing all the standards would not play back this file

Release 517 have been uploaded here : http://www.zshare.net/download/12208747666f6988/

Internal Mpeg Source filter have been modify to support M2TS files :
- works with VC1, H264, AC3, DTS, LPCM (16 bits only), DTS-HD
- didn't works with Eac3 and Dolby true HD

For M2TS files with VC1 internal decoder should be used (not compatible with ffdshow or MS decoder yet).

Regarding the pure Interlaced material black screen, Correct duration calculation but stuck to 00:00 black screen i allegate a sample from haali wich show that the stream is parsed (look at the bitrate graph) and 20 seconds of interlaced material so that tests can be done in order to resolve.

http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/5821/clipboard01in4.png

The test stream is a 20 secs mkv trunk containing only VC-1 interlaced video (no audio).

Is there way to edit how the mpeg2 decoder outputs DVD subtitles? I mean they are by default quite crappy looking, or is DVD subtitles already defined on DVD so that mpc cant edit font and size and position anymore?

According to the 1st post:
"Video decoder should be connected directly to the renderer. This means that no intermediate filters such as DirectVobSub or ffdshow can be inserted between decoder and video renderer."

How do I make sure that there are no other filters between codec and VR ???

I'm also looking for this answer. In the mean time, looking at MPC-HC menu Play/Filters I always see ffdshow in the decoders list:

ffdshow only
ffdshow+MPC
ffdshow+DivX

When I set the Merit of ffdshow to "do not use", I get a black screen. So how I can comply with the DXVA "no intermediate filters" requirement.

Thank you.

Yes.

DVD subtitles are simply 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL) bitmaps with two bits per pixel (i.e. just 4 colors).

There's not much you can do with that...

i suggest to change it a little bit in the FfmpegContext.c :
if (((nWidth > 720) && (cur_sps->ref_frame_count > (1024*MAX_DPB_41/(nWidth*nHeight*1.5)))) || // HD content, level 4.1
((nWidth <= 720) && (cur_sps->ref_frame_count > (1024*MAX_DPB_31/(nWidth*nHeight*1.5))))) // SD content, level 3.1
return 2; // Too much ref frames

ON

if (((nWidth > 720) && (cur_sps->level_idc == 41) && (cur_sps->ref_frame_count > (1024*MAX_DPB_41/(nWidth*nHeight*1.5)))) || // HD content, level 4.1
((nWidth <= 720) && (cur_sps->level_idc == 31) && (cur_sps->ref_frame_count > (1024*MAX_DPB_31/(nWidth*nHeight*1.5))))) // SD content, level 3.1
return 2; // Too much ref frames

Because do checking ref_frame_count for Level 4.1 and 3.1, but level_idc do not check.

I have many .mkv where ref_frame_count it's ok for Level 4.1, but Level in here is 5.1 and DXVA NOT WORK

this is a very nice and informative thread about DXVA :

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=972503

my test confirmed that the mortal enemy for DXVA with 1080 material is number of ref frames - bigger then 4 and goodbye to DXVA
only way to fix is reencoding. (vertical mod16 is not a problem, nut sure for a 5.1 profile as I always reencode in 4.1)

With 720 it's a lot easier, if there is a problem (usually not) IDC changer (link above) can fix it instantly.

and try AVINAPTIC for media info (also link above)

all tested on Radeon HD3200 & MPC HC alone (what a marvelous piece of software - not a single extra codec on PC !)

I think you have a problem elsewhere. As you can read in a lot of threads talking about that (in avs forum for example), if your file have the good number of refs it is a 4.1 compliant file even if 5.1 is signaled in the file (not totally true because of VBV, but DXVA seems to do not care about VBV limitations at least for decent bitrate eg not 300 mbps :D )

WOuld be nice, if MPC-HC would add Open * with Media Player Classic in Vista default open handlers, I mean DVD, Blue Ray etc automatc open handler in Vista. If I install PowerDVD then power dvd add's itself to default program to autoplay dvd. It would nice to have MPC do same thing as I want to play everything with MPC.

if (((nWidth > 720) && (cur_sps->ref_frame_count > (1024*MAX_DPB_41/(nWidth*nHeight*1.5)))) || // HD content, level 4.1
((nWidth <= 720) && (cur_sps->ref_frame_count > (1024*MAX_DPB_31/(nWidth*nHeight*1.5))))) // SD content, level 3.1
return 2; // Too much ref frames

ON

if (((nWidth > 720) && (cur_sps->level_idc == 41) && (cur_sps->ref_frame_count > (1024*MAX_DPB_41/(nWidth*nHeight*1.5)))) || // HD content, level 4.1
((nWidth <= 720) && (cur_sps->level_idc == 31) && (cur_sps->ref_frame_count > (1024*MAX_DPB_31/(nWidth*nHeight*1.5))))) // SD content, level 3.1
return 2; // Too much ref frames

Because do checking ref_frame_count for Level 4.1 and 3.1, but level_idc do not check.

I have many .mkv where ref_frame_count it's ok for Level 4.1, but Level in here is 5.1 and DXVA NOT WORK

Level is ignored on purpose, for better compatibility with mislabeled files, however we should eventually start using this and forcing people to use the correct level_idc in their h264 stream headers

After some tests mpc hc rev 517 seems to play fewer streams with dxva in comparison to rev 514. Also cyberlink's h264 decoder
works with dxva quite well.

@us1111
Use "Override aspect ratio" to 16:9 or stretch to window. Both are in "View=>Video Frame"

@MarcioAB
You have to be aware that built-in DXVA in mpc is only for h264 video streams so something like "ffdshow+DivX" will never have hardware accelerated video.
Block all filters that open h264 video in mpc extrenal filters then in the internal filters go to transform filters then h264/avc (dxva) check it and double click it, uncheck "enable ffmpeg" and check "enable dxva", that way mpc will show video if the stream can be used by dxva only.

Also mpc only supports dxva2 for h264 meaning that only vista + evr/evr custom presenter will have hw accel video. The dxva in mpc seems to be more compatible with ATI cards rather than NVIDIA ones.

This was using mpc hc rev 514.

Example of a hw accel video:

Please send me a pm or post it on this thread.

Thank you Kado. Working now. Not exactly sure what fixed it. Any way, if I keep ffdshow merit as "ffdshow default", ffdshow will came in anyway. If I decrease the merit (to "prefered" for example), ffdshow will not came in anymore and so MPC filter will came in alone. Yesterday I had no video on that condition, but today it's working.

Quick comments:

@MarcioAB: Block all filters that open h264 video in mpc extrenal filters ...Ok, but I never had filters over there (in the external filters).

then in the internal filters go to transform filters then h264/avc (dxva) check it ...Ok, but H264/AVC and "enable DXVA" was always checked.

uncheck "enable ffmpeg"Hum ... no place to check/uncheck ffmpeg. Using MPC HomeCinema v 1.1.0.0

Also mpc only supports dxva2 for h264 meaning that only vista + evr/evr custom presenter will have hw accel video.Hum, XP SP3 over here and working well. 25% cpu usage with MPC-hc with DXVA turned off and only 2% cpu usage with DXVA turned on.

The dxva in mpc seems to be more compatible with ATI cards rather than NVIDIA ones.Ok, but GeForce 8600GTS here and working well.

I have found a problem with the DXVA selection.

Casimir if i am not mistaken you have added the Pixel Aspect ratio check? It will have to be removed as i have not yet encountered any files with wierd PAR that did not work with DXVA

Please see this example:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=13899577&postcount=171

EDIT:

It does seemt that the par aspect ratio might not be a problem after all, Please comment out the check until further and more detailed proof is presented

the only change is to reject non level 3.1 SD streams, but if DXVA can decode level 4.1 for SD too we can remove it.

I think I found the issue with my "no video" yesterday: 5 Reference frames - DXVA seems to not work with 5 Ref frames, only 4 or less.

All the other x264 parms seems to be no problem. Well ... I need to re-encode many things. Before that, is there any other x264 parms restriction ?

Thank you.

Do you mean it play with "No DXVA" or it didn't play at all?

There is a check on SAR field present in H264 header, but you are right 90% of my samples with weird SAR works with DXVA. Only one is correctly blacklist by this test, so I aggree with you it should be removed.

I have a problem opening a stream from DVBDream in MPC HC (in XP 32bit).

It worked fine up until 3-4 days ago, but all of a sudden it stopped working. DVBDream will bring up MPC, but it will remain at "Opening" and no video will come up. MPC would use 50% CPU, and the only way to stop it is to kill it in task manager.

I deleted the registry sttings for MPC and reinstalled DVBDream, however, I still have the same problem. Note that I have dualboot with Vista, and MPC plays all the stream fine in Vista.

This is the command line in DVBDREam:
/add "udp://127.0.0.1:1234" /play

Same things happen if I do File- Open - udp://127.0.0.1:1234

anyone?

Using xxl build rev 518 the files are played with dxva again but with your build rev 517 mpc failed to render the video, only audio was played because I disabled ffmpeg and left dxva enabled, the internal ffmpeg decoder decoded the video properly. Basically it played with "no DXVA" with your build.

Also check this situation (corrupted video):
mpc hc internal dxva (http://pwp.netcabo.pt/kado/mpc_hc.png)
mpc dxva via cyberlink's decoder (http://pwp.netcabo.pt/kado/pdvd8.png)

@MarcioAB
Use recent builds. Compiled builds here (http://tirnanog.fate.jp/mirror/Misc%20(not%20by%20celtic_druid)/MPC-Homecinema%20SVN/) and changelog here (http://mpc-hc.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/mpc-hc/trunk/?view=log).

Here 4 short sample where ref_num it is ok for Level 4.1, but file encoded with level 5.1 and when open it, we have "20 fps bug" :

Maybe other parameters must see, not only ref_num ???

hello;
i just tried your test build with a 720p mkv, and the internal MPCHC decoder, and it works!....

kinda..

it says "H.264 bitstream decoder, No FGT", whatever that means, but its only a black screen; video, or audio. it just wont play. it sits there on "Play" and the time doesnt move fwd. im using vmr9 renderless.

@MatMaul
Your test build triggers Execute Disable on my system crashing mpc but xxl rev 518 works and decodes with dxva only the sd3.1 file, the sd4.1 cannot be rendered.
Cyberlink's pdvd8 h264 decoder decodes both with dxva.
With Aleksoid1978 files 2 play corrupted and other 2 play fine with dxva (nvidia).

@ericab
Try build rev 518 hosted here (http://tirnanog.fate.jp/mirror/Misc%20(not%20by%20celtic_druid)/MPC-Homecinema%20SVN/). Also use evr/evr custom presenter.
"H.264 bitstream decoder, No FGT" means that the gpu is decoding the video.

What file play fine with dxva ??? MPC-HC Decode or Cyberlink ???
Vista or XP ???

Because I play all 4 file on XP, on Cyberlink 7 h264 - DXVA use, but "20fps bug" :confused:

P.S. Video - Palit 8800GT 512Mb

Also at evening check on VIsta ...
