Hi everyone
i've been using MPC basically since the ?beginning? (guliverkli) before the HC thing (cause i always hated mp9 and asorts)
never have i found it necessary to post in this thread .. until now
i just have to strongly agree with some people here
GO back to the Original icons (and bar/audio icons)
MPC is and should be a BASIC clean/fast and very versitile player
don't go goofing around with "eyecandy" for those few users who want them
maybe in the future you could opt for "skinning" like Winamp
just 2 eurocent from another XP-classic user
Yes. I only can second it.
Besides, file icons looking like executables (just with the extension as a kind of overlay) are confusing.
There were some nice icons on DeviantArt recently, but I suggest that icon and skinning stuff should be a separate project, and someone may provide icons with an install script separately.
I like it how it is. For real. And I'm a Vista Aero user.

I think there mighrt be a bug in the internal Mp4 splitter. Using this video here (http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/25995), I get no sound when using the internal Mp4/Mov splitter. If I disable this, it works fine.
all works fine here using the internal AAC decoder and internal MP4 splitter. Comments are in German...

I think AAC 5.1 downmixed to stereo is too quiet. Splitter/decoder/matrix problem?
I used nero aac encoder on an ac3 5.1 track, and both the ac3 & aac tracks are equally loud in foobar2000, and equal to the ac3 track played in mpc-hc. But aac played in mpc-hc, native & in a mkv container, are very quiet. I had to increase the volume of my speakers a lot to hear it, then system sounds were extremely loud.
svn v1160, xp sp3, audio switcher enabled, normalize & regain volume disabled.
If I turn on "regain volume" and move the slider all the way to the right, then the aac track is almost as loud as it should be.

I would guess that is happening to you 73ChargerFan because to fit 5.1 into 2 channels, the volumes of those channels would have to be normalized. Incase your note sure what this means, its basically, lets say part of the 5.1 -> algorithm mixed front right and rear right, into just the front right. If the output level from those channels was at maximum at anytime in the 5.1 track, then the resulting output would be greater than maximum, leading to clipping and horrible effects.
For this reason the output levels will be brought down to the mathematically correct output level, so that the highest level of output on your stereo setup can be is 1 on either side, and will never go above.
Try usnig ffdshows mixer, you will see when you "normalize" the channels when expanding 5.1 to 2 channel, that the output levels for your front left will be something like 0.73 out of 1 times the output of front left and rear left, something like this.

Why use a shell extension for that? MPC can already do that for associated files. Supporting directories is a matter of a simple registry tweak.

Is it no longer possible to downmix audio from 5.1 TrueHD tracks with MPC-HC? It seemed to work in 1.2.908.0 but no matter what setting I use in the newer versions (1137,1179,1212,1237) it is always outputting 6 channels.
Downmixing to stereo with regular AC3 or DTS-HD works fine though. Am I missing something obvious?

Probably because without a shell extension it doesn't work for more than 15 files in Vista and Win7.

I understand you, though I don't think this is the cause.
Same audio stream as AC3 5.1, down to 2 channels, sounds louder.
Both AC3 & AAC versions sound same volume in foobar2000.
For some reason, AAC & AC3 are handled differently in mpc-hc.

Probably because without a shell extension it doesn't work for more than 15 files in Vista and Win7.True. But I don't see that limit as a big problem for a media player (that is mostly used for videos). Either organize related files in directories or enqueue files in steps of 15 or less. Everyone who has ever accidentally opened many files will understand the reasoning behind the new limit. Opening a hundred selectively picked music files from a directory is still possible from within the "open file" dialog of MPC (or any other app).

Why i try made Shell Extension for MPC ?
1) - It is now impossible to select multiple files in Windows Explorer and open the context menu is almost always just a few copies of the program.
2) - I made a slight change to this was (later commit in SVN), so that all selected files are opened in a single copy of the player, but order is wrong.
What do ShellExtension - Always open ALL selected files in one copy of MPC, and it is in the order in which they selected in Explorer. MPCHC still work without ShellExtension dll.
Much easier to open files from explorer, then from MPC menu.

How about a generic extension like Open++ (http://www.freewebs.com/dengdun/en/openxx.htm)? I've coded a similar extension like Open++ but much better, it was a .NET application but later I've ported the shell part to C++ and the GUI stayed .NET, the main reason I've never released it was because shell extensions should not be .NET, I've fixed this some weeks ago but still want to polish it a bit before I release it, I even consider to make it shareware.

@Aleksoid1978
The shell extension is working great here in Vista32-SP2. Finally I'm able to enqueue a long list of videos in MPC-HC directly from Total Commander and getting them in the correct order in the playlist. The order was almost always messed up before.
Two wishes though:
1. It seems as if it's currently enabled only for directories and file types already associated with MPC-HC (not for *.mp3 in my case)? If that's the case I would like to request that the shell extension is enabled for ALL supported file types, regardless of whether MPC-HC is the default player for that file extension or not. One reason I'm requesting this is that I want mp3 files to open in WinAmp by default, but occasionally I want to play them in MPC-HC (the favorites and auto-resume functions are very handy in 5 hour long radio shows). The shell extension is quicker than the Windows "Open With..." feature even with a single file, and of course also working with multiple files. It's also nice to be able to quickly test some video format in MPC-HC that for some reason may be associated with another player.
2. I don't know what your plan is regarding this, but even though regsvr32 may be fine for Doom9 regulars, for the average user it would probably be better to add the shell extension to the MPC-HC installer. Perhaps with a checkbox remembering the previous enabled/disabled state if there is opposition here to enabling it automatically? Given the small (~100kB) dll size I don't think it would be a problem to add it to the installer?
PS. The icons are a nice touch. It makes it easy to separate the shell extension entries from the standard MPC-HC context menu entries (and in my case previous custom made entries).
EDIT: Actually, on my system, it's working great only if MPC-HC is already running. If MPC-HC is not running it mostly just opens an empty MPC-HC window and sits there without playing anything or adding anything to the playlist.

this happens if you have the option "remember items" checked under Playlist (but for me it will always add the new items to the playlist), with "remember items" off it will start playing the first selected file in Explorer.
with "remember items" checked it would be better if MPC would start playing the first newly added file from Explorer.

No.
If you select "Add to playlist" - all selected files add to the end of current MPC playlist.
If you select "Play in MPC" - current MPC playlist clear and selected files add to MPC and play in order, then you select them in Explorer.

@Aleksoid
Yes, it's definitely a startup time issue. Something has happened to my system in the last couple of months that makes MPC-HC startup really slow after some hours/days of uptime, but it's OK immediately after rebooting. It's affecting some other apps as well, so I guess it is a resource leak somewhere. The prime suspect is Kaspersky, because I think this has been happening since I upgraded from KIS 2009 to KIS 2010. I may try uninstalling or downgrading KIS, but I'm planning on moving to Win7 fairly soon anyway, so I may just live with it until then.
System is self-built in november 2006 with most components almost 3 years old with some later additions (Vista32-SP2 on EVGA 680i, Core 2 Duo E6300, Nvidia 8800GT @ 1900x1200, 2GB DDR2 RAM @ 800 MHz, 4 or 5 HDDs, DVD, Hauppauge HVR-4000, Dell 2709W etc. etc. ).
Test results with stop watch and MPC-HC startup (no files opened, just a regular start):
Before reboot MPC-HC took between 9 and 11 seconds to start (tested several times and checked that there were no mplayerc.exe processes running in task manager). When the startup time is this high the shell extension isn't working unless MPC-HC is already running.
Then i started shutting down applications one by one, including KIS. But even though the startup time edged closer to 9 seconds it was still always over 9 seconds when "everything" was shut down.
I rebooted and it now takes between 1 and 2 seconds to start MPC-HC (which is about what I've considered to be a normal startup time for MPC/MPC-HC over the years) and the shell extension works even when MPC-HC is not already running. But I know that after a few hours or days of uptime it will eventually get just as slow again.
If you still need the registry keys let me know, but I guess that is pointless now that I've established that it is a startup time issue.
I'll try your build 1243 when the system gets slow again if you still think it may help. I didn't see it before I rebooted.

Why is not possible to start and stop video using a left mouse button if i choose to disable caption and menu bar?
It is only possible to turn up and down volume with the mouse wheel.
I think is a missing feature, am i wrong?
I like the new WMP12 clean interface but i prefer MPCHC and i was trying to make it similar when i realized the strange behavior.

I'm trying to take Blu-ray screencaptures using MPC-HC with overlay set to EVR (on Windows 7 x64). I find this gives the best image quality (black = black instead of grey when using EVR Custom). The problem is, when set to overlay, the screenshots I take have the resolution of the MPC window instead of the source resolution (1080p). Is there anyway I can change this? When I take screenshots with overlay set to EVR Custom, the output resolution is correct no matter the window size.

Afaik there's no way to fix as with EVR, MPC doesn't do the rendering, your graphics card does but with EVR Custom Pres MPC does the rendering and so it takes a full res screenshot.
You should use a later, SVN, build if you want to fix the colours with EVR Custom Pres. ; 1.2.1179 gives me the full 0-255 range with EVR Custom Presenter, without using the shader in Win 7 x64.

If you have "grey when using EVR Custom" just go to Renderer Settings->Output range and select the other option (usually 0-255)
Any chance you're using an old ATI driver ?

one small problem:
when set direct 3d fullscreen (playback on secondary monitor) and activated tray icon (is shown on the primary monitor) the menu on the tray icon doesnt work when movie is loaded/played. without direct 3d it works.
(running 1.2.1237.0 x64 on win7)
one feature request:
with direct 3d fullscreen on secondary I open the mpc window on the primary to have control but option windows opens on the secondary not on the monitor where the playercontrol window is. and there is a useless black rectangle where normally the video is, this should be disabled/removed in this mode, so you get a detached playercontrol like vlc or so.

This remote works through walls so I can use it somewhere in the apartment. There are other X10 remotes supported, see http://www.eventghost.org/docs/supported_receivers.html.
