is there any chance that someone could update mpc-hc's DXVA stuff that it also supports interlaced content?
at least from a logical perspective it would make more sense if those formats are supported which actually need more cpu/rendering power.

Is it somehow possible to make black bars in letterboxed video grey? It is to prevent burn-in on plasma displays.

I can add a function to change the background color, but I don't have a clue how to add a color selection object to the options menu. For black letterboxes encoded in a video you can use a modified letterbox or pillarbox pixel shader.

Thanks. It works, but not in all cases. Sometimes there're videos with varying aspect ratio (The Dark Knight, for example). So a constant letterbox won't work. I wonder if there's a way of letterbox/pillarbox autodetection.
Oh, and it won't work with madVR, for obvious reasons.

I think you can relax somewhat. I've owned a plasma since april 2007, and I have never seen image retention or burn in.

I use my plasma as my normal day-to-day TV-screen. I have watched many movies, both thru MPC-HT and regular BD, and i have never used 'gray letterboxes'. Never seen anything to worry about.

What you can see is (what i call) 'overexcited' phosphors where undertitels have been printed. But i personally dont count that as image retention, cause the effect is gone after whatching something else for 5 or 10 minutes.

JanWillem32
11th July 2011, 12:17
An autodetecting letterbox/pillarbox function would cause masking on every black screen, large portions of night scenes and parts of images with any dark objects at a border. Don't forget that a lossy encoded letterbox/pillarbox really isn't completely black at all. The function would need a minimum detection level above black that it may mask. A function like this will have to be integrated into the rendering engine, as the multi-pass detection and execution parts can't be efficiently done with only independent pixel shaders.

TheElix
11th July 2011, 12:44
I'm not talking about this level of autodetection. Let it search automatically for 100% black portions of fixed aspect ratio rectangles (seen in 2.35:1 movies, 4:3 movies on 16:9 screen etc.). Screw those lossy encoded letterboxes/pillarboxes.

G_M_C
Some plasmas have in-built image renention protection. Pioneers have image orbiter. Samsung can make letterboxes/pillarboxes grey. And some panels are more resistant to IR than others. You are lucky.

Thanks for the tip... It works but at cost of greatly increased CPU consumption. And it's not contributing to the PQ either, I think. But look at me, whining by myself all day long. I guess I'll have to live with what options available ATM.

This is bugging me.

Forced subtitle flag is ignored if you set subtitles to off during playback, close player then restart or play another file. I would think the logical option would be for forced subs to ALWAYS kick in when you play and the option to turn them off is then yours. At present if you play a file with forced subs and forgot you turned it off for the last file then you end up having to pause, go back and enable them in order to see forced subs.

Unless I am missing some option where forced subs are always shown.

If not then can we have an option to always show forced subs on playback even if you set subtitles off during the last file played?

EDIT: I just checked a file where forced subs are embedded but it does not have the secondary 'player must always show forced subs' flag as no so I am guessing I will need to remux. However I still think the player should have this as an option even if the file has the no flag set.

EDIT2: I just tried remuxing a file with the forced subs track flagged as 'Yes' and MPC-HC still ignores it if the previous movie had subs disabled. I think this is either a bug or a sorely missed option.

I have a weird problem.

Some of my mkv files are locking up during playback.

I usually test every mkv file by playing it and jumping forward every 30 mins until i see the end credits. This worked fine with the films I am now having issues with.

When I play the file it would freeze up about 45 mins in then restart from beginning.

Restarting the film resulted in buffering, which stopped at 5% and then just locked up.

I am using dxva on an hd3600 ati agp. Not the best, but it works for my needs.

Settings in mpc-hc are:

vmr 9 (renderless)

Any ideas?
Why does it buffer a file on a local hard drive?

Sorry, I did not phrase that well. The "normal" part is my playing the file and jumping forward in 30min segments until I know it can get to the end credits...thus telling me the file works ok.

Would it be possible to set up hot keys for custom AR's (image sizes) that I have defined in the Pan and Scan context menu? (Edit, new, define sizes and offsets?)

Or is there some other way to define custom AR's that I am missing ala Zoom Player? I need at least 10 preset image sizes, accessible from hot keys (but not the numeric keypad keys).

Thanks, Vern

Can someone please explain dithering to me?
As I understand it, dithering is enabled if:
1) you enable "10-bit RGB output"
2) you enable "force 10-bit RGB input"
3) you enable FFPP/HFPP

Would 1 and 2 give the same result, just that forcing 10-bit input would force MPC to always output 10-bit RGB? If so, do you need to have both of these checked?
In order of best to worst, does it go 10-bit -> HFPP (16-bit FP?) -> FFPP (32-bit FP?) If you just want to use FFPP, do you just enable that or do you need 10-bit RGB enabled?

Lastly, what confuses me in the renderer wiki, is that it says that dithering can be used with these modes. I thought dithering was already being used with these modes?

Pardon my ignorance, but please help me understand these settings.

@rahzel: Dithering options are to become selectable by the user. The "force 10-bit RGB input" option will be removed. (For reference, see the builds in my thread.)
FFPP and HFPP only set the precision for internal processing surfaces for the rendering chain. The "10-bit RGB output" option is intended to enable 10-bit back buffers, and in exclusive mode 10-bit display output, too. The changes can be seen in the stats screen. Changing these options while rendering is active works in my builds, not in the reference build.

I don't know a whole lot on this (but I'm sort of starting to understand! :)).

Thanks. In EVR CP and VMR-9 r. there are 4 surface formats, the one used for the mixer and renderer stages depends on the renderer setting.
m_SurfaceType = m_bFullFloatingPointProcessing? D3DFMT_A32B32G32R32F : m_bHalfFloatingPointProcessing? D3DFMT_A16B16G16R16F : m_bHighColorResolution? D3DFMT_A2R10G10B10 : D3DFMT_X8R8G8B8; (actual code, but should not be too hard to read)
With every step of higher surface precision, the precision losses for every step of processing of the decoded input to display output are less than with X8R8G8B8.
At the end of rendering, the output is dithered or rounded to A2R10G10B10 or X8R8G8B8, depending on the display format and the selected option for dithering.
The display format can be A2R10G10B10 when both the D3D exclusive mode and 10-bit output options are activated, else it's always X8R8G8B8.
All of this can be seen in the stats screen.
As a side-note, A32B32G32R32F, A16B16G16R16F and A2R10G10B10 disable the forced bilinear filter on chroma in the video mixer with ATi and some Intel GPUs. Chroma up-sampling shaders are required if you don't want the chroma to be scaled by nearest neighbor in these cases.

rahzel
19th July 2011, 23:20
okay, so as of now, the best setup would be to set it to 10-bit RGB output with FFPP, and if you want bilinear chroma upsampling instead of nearest neighbor, you have to enable the yv12 chroma upsampling shader?

if i'm having choppy playback issues (which is probably a result of lack of processing power by the gpu?) should I start doing this until it plays smooth:
1. disable yv12 chroma upsampling
2. disable FFPP
3. disable 10-bit RGB output

Or does 10-bit RGB output have no affect on the GPU processing load and is more of a compatibility/capability of your display thing?

I have 4 computers (including my notebook) and only my HTPC that has the fastest GPU of the 4 can handle FFPP -- the others stutter badly. All of my computers are AMD based (780G/HD3200, HD6250M, 880G/HD4250 and HD 5570).

JanWillem32
20th July 2011, 01:04
The yv12 chroma upsampling shader is rather bad, it uses some variant of the NTSC analog matrix to perform RGB - Y'CbCr conversion, and then blurs with a box blur. I've written two with proper SD and HD matrices, one bilinear and one spline5. (See my pixel shader pack, I can also write some more things if requested. The spline5 type is split for the integer 8- and 10-bit surfaces, and the floating point 16- and 32-bit surfaces.)
The 10-bit option uses the same amount of memory and processing as the default 8-bit setting. The only valid reason I've not set it as a default is because of the chroma conversion. The 16- and 32-bit options take the same amount of processing, but double and quadruple the memory load respectively. The 10-bit display output also comes relatively for free, it just requires a compatible video card. Many video cards expose 10-bit display formats as valid for output, but actually setting the format makes the driver crash the player (not too serious, though). I don't expect you'll have much trouble with the actual 10-bit display output option, as even my previous X1800 XT could handle that.
For reducing memory load, you can switch FFPP for HFPP, or even to 10-bit. All of your GPUs can at least handle the bilinear chroma up-sampling shader without issues. For further reducing the processing load, you can also disable the video filters in the video section in CCC, don't forget to also disable the forced AA and AF filtering settings in the 3D section (it's called "application preference"). For adding some customized filtering stages, from mere video jokes to filters for daily use, I've written plenty of other pixel shaders, too. Most are pretty light, but there are some really heavy ones as well.
