I just downloaded Sample 6 out of curiousity and it plays fine for me. I can't seem to be able to skip around but it plays smooth and clear. Try using the VMR9 renderer, with the 3d surfaces option enabled, to get the playback I just did. EDIT: With the Haali Renderer, it plays just as well, but now I can skip around effortlessly.
I just downloaded Sample 2 as well and there's definitely a problem there with my earlier VMR9 setting. It plays, but every 3 seconds, the video pauses and resumes. It's very annoying. However, with the Haali renderer, it plays perfectly.
Sample 5 plays the exact same way as sample 2 does. It pauses repeatedly, but with the Haali Renderer, playback is perfect.
This is all with r681 using an Nvidia 8400GS
Well that's strange, since you're not using DXVA as cca says you should be able to play all the 6 samples without problems. They work perfectly in software mode :p
Problem is, I think only 1 & 4 are DXVA compatible files. The others should be decoded in software mode, but they're not blocked by the DXVA detection formula.

MPC-HC r684 64bit: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 works fine with DXVA (NVidia, Vista). only 3 freezes - 16 reference frames problem.

ATI HD4870 (3870 is the same BTW), Vista64, Cats8.7
You can find problematic samples here: http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1145933&postcount=2327
Samples 1 & 4 fixed with the 11+ ref frames fix for Vista.
Sample 3 has 16 refs, in rev586 the player detects this and changes to software mode playing the video perfectly. In newer revs the 11+ ref frames limit is removed, so MPC tries to use DXVA with the file. The card is not compatible with 16 refs, so the video freezes after a second or so. There are lots of anime encoded with 16 ref frames, all of those files fail. The solution is simple: rev586 is perfect.
Samples 2, 5 & 6 don't play fine in any revision.
I test sample 1 - all ok.
sample 3 - play, but after about 8 second video freez, but slider move... but if i seek about 25 second playback is fine to the end of file.
I(and all developert) can back to check fo ref frame MAX = 11... and all other file do render without DXVA ...

My opinion is that MPC should always fall back to software decoding when DXVA is not fully supported. DXVA should be made idiot-proof, so that regular people can use also it.
So what about this:
1) Set maximum allowed reference frames to a value that should be supported by all graphics cards
2) Adjust that maximum based on the used OS, and the brand and model of the card using the knowledge gathered here on the forum. (a hidden option in registry/ini would be useful to override the maximum for testing purposes)
3) Use the calculated maximum in the IsDXVASupported() formula.

Totally agree! Otherwise MPC would grow out of proportion and become slow if it takes account of all special cases.
It's impossible to please everyone and work around broken drivers (in most cases). Pressure should be put to manufacturers. New cards and drivers come out every day. Chasing them would exhaust any programmer...
Just my opinion.

So 2, 5 and 6 have problems with ATI cards, OK with NV. 1 and 4 works on all hardware. Only 3 has problems with both, and this should be fixed with the 12 or more ref frames limitation. Thanks for the info.

You have ATI or NVIDIA? I vote YES for the everything with 12 or more ref frames to be rendered without DXVA, as it doesn't work with neither ATI or NV. If you implement this limit, only samples 2, 5 and 6 will have problems, and only with ATI. And since NV cards can decode them in DXVA mode, ATI should be able too. I hope you can fix 2, 5 and 6 :)

1) Exactly what I was saying, rev586 was perfect: 12 or more without DXVA. You can check how matmaul removed that limit in rev587. Since then, problems.
2) & 3) agreed, isn't that what the developers are trying to achieve?

Hy !
I have a serious problem.
I have hdv mpeg2 1440*1080 m2t files captured with hdvsplit.
I encode to avchd 1440*1080 and dolby digital audio with vegas8 pro, the result is an m2ts file, but when i try to play with mediaplayer classic latest version, it doesn't play motion just a picture from first frame.
I have an ati4870 gfx with mpc dxva enable.

A similar formula already exists, the fact that some things don't work at the moment are plain and simple bugs. Fixing these bugs will fix the problems.
Now if and when we find out the bugs are not MPC-HC's fault, and we are 100% sure about this, we could change the formula to adapt to that case.
Ofcourse we would still have to file a bugreport to the cause of the bug.
i admit though the formula could be slightly better than it is now, but that change won't help the current problems.

Assuming you already have the required decoders installed, you should first try disabling the internal MP4/MOV splitter (that handles 3GP as well). Then Haali Media Splitter should take over.
If you haven't got the required stuff installed (which would mean it also wouldn't play in BSPlayer), you need to install ffdshow.

And versions since only work with less refs? Is there a discrepancy between different resolution files and refs, or does it play 1080p files the same as 720p?
I don't know the details of the formula, but I do know:
- Everything over 1280x720 plus 10 or more ref frames plays without DXVA. I don't have 720p or 1080p videos with less ref frames to check what's the maximum allowed.
- Below that resolution the player tries to use DXVA always, but ATI and NVIDIA cards can't decode more than 12 ref frames correctly, the resolution doesn't matter. The formula is OK regarding HD content, but not with SD content. That's why this revision is important: it limits ref frames to 11 in all resolutions, so those SD files (<720p) with 12 or more refs that before were played with DXVA and failing in consequence are now played perfectly in software mode.
This 11+ ref limit was present until rev587, the developers removed it, dunno why. It should be there.
Also I'd be nice to put here the current details of the formula, for testing purposes.

OK thanks. I think I got it. It is only a safety measure that make the player resort to software decoding when too many refs are present. Sounds like a good, if not necessary, idea. I don't have too many files using more than 11 refs though so I should be ok. I don't think many people at all have a lot of files with more than 11 refs.

Exactly. If you don't want errors and files not playing at all it's a must. The problem is that a high number of ref frames seems to help anime encodes a lot, so lots of anime encoders use not 11 or 12, but 16. And that is an instant freeze in DXVA mode.

Nope. DVD Navigator, ffdshow audio and video decoders, Enhanced Video Renderer (custom presenter), and directsound device.
Edit: Trying some other decoders and it looks like libmpeg2 in ffdshow is the real problem..., I'll post the bug on their forums.
Anyway, any chance of F1/F2 controlling the directvosub delay like the internal filter?

Everything with 12 or more ref frames will be decoded without DXVA. No other changes were made in this revision.
Thanks Alek, 16 ref frames files working again :)
I hope you can also fix samples 2, 5 and 6 :)
I have NVIDIA - and this is sample play fine ... can't reproduce. Casimir666 have Ati. Write him

The graphic card I am using is nVidia 8400M GS. It's not in the supported list. So I can't play H.264 video with hardware acceleration using MPC-HC.
But I find that I can play H.264 video with hardware acceleration using Cyberlink's decoder, and if I using Kmplayer I'm even able to see subtitles.
So the question I have is: Can I watch H.264 video with hardware acceleration and subtitles with MPC-HC?
thank you

8600GT supports "bitstream mode" according to the first thread, while 8400GS not.
Though, I try setupping my MPC-HC as your pictures then I find it working.
Thanks very much.

8400gs(both G86 and G98 core) does support bitstream mode.
8600gt is based on G84 core.
8500 series and older 8400gs are based on G86 core.

Which part of "your card doesn't support bitstream mode" is so hard to understand?
Yes, it supports partial acceleration of some things needed to decode those formats, but it's not able to fully decode any of them all by itself, which is what MPC-HC is (only) using.
Commercial codecs were written or recoded with using partial acceleration in mind, but it's hard to retro-fit libavcodec (which is used for pure software decoding) with hardware support.

With newest rev. 66 from guliverkli2 I have similar bug as with MPC-HC (it always resets default style settings after player restart).
Here is a part of mplayerc.ini after player shutdown:
rev.55 (works good):

not sure about others, but h264 dxva works fine.
by default, mpc-hc will automatically decode h264 in dxva if that's possible. you can check the internal filters section to see if h264/avc(dxva) has been selected or not (selected by default). you can verfiy dxva status by using display stats option or check the filter info while playing the file.
vista needs evr/evr custom as output. if you need subtitle, you must use evr custom with auto-load subtitle option selected. vfilter is no no..
as far as i know, there are files, which works fine in dxva with cyberlink pdvd decoder, not with mpc-hc internal one.
"evr custom it becomes unfluent in full screem mode"
i think someone said the same thing before. you can check through this thread. I don't have this problem.

Try using other hardware deinterlacer with evr custom presenter. to change it you need evrprop.dll in the system 32 folder, open a file then stop it, go to evr properties and change the video processor to something else.

BUG
MPC HC no longer saves default subtitle style after program restart, probably introduced in rev692.
Tested with rev694, last working revision was rev689.
