View Full Version : Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPC-HC) - DXVA!

Hi,
i've done quite extensive test with the VC-1 Internal decoder and DXVA activated.
Testing it on various BluRay titles i have these issues
1) The overally smoothness is not good, some frames jump, some frames are simply not rendered
2) Occasionally Green Flash in all the Frame
3) Occasionally Green Flash at the border of the frame
4) Occasionally 5 pixel height green corrupted pixels at the very bottom of the frame
Apart from the Green issues i can see no corrupted frame at all.
I'm using XP3 ATI 2600XT.
Can something be done to resolve these issue?
Sidenote. With the NonDXVA decoder, no corruption (green or whatever) at all, but still no playing smoothness.
The VC-1 streams are repackeg in a .mkv to be played, with eac3to.
Hope this helps.

As I said, I never had any external/stand alone filters installed on my system. I've always preferred VLC or KMP instead installing codec packs. The thing is while certain mkv files are played just fine, others are jerky:
For example, the properties of a mkv file, not played correctly:
Audio: Dolby AC3 48000Hz 6ch [Undetermined (Audio 1)]
Video: MPEG4 Video (H264) 1280x720 23.98fps [English (Video 1)]
As for which filters are used during playback:
- video mixing render 9 (renderless)
- default DirectSound device
- mpc video decoder
- audio switcher
- ac3 audio decoder
have a look at which filters are being used during mkv playback, it might be something as simple as it using the internal decoder with higher priority than say something like CoreAVC or Cyberlink H264 decoder if they are registered on the system. You can always add higher priority filters through the external filters menu as well as block certain filters you don't want to use for playback.

I normally use coreavc or ffdshows libavcodec for h264 decoding. You might want to grab Haali's Matrsoka Splitter as a bare minimum for splitting mkv's properly. Also grab the latest FFDShow Tryouts. The two of those should nearly eliminate most problems for general scenarios. Tryouts supports near most all things.
http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/
http://voxel.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/ffdshow-tryout/ffdshow_rev2144_20080924_clsid.exe
THis may eliminate some of the problems if they are related to internal mkv splitter and the file perhaps? Haalis is much more tolerant to all sorts of weirdness from some peoples muxing.

You get jerky playback because your computer is too slow to decode that video smoothly. Try with CoreAVC.

Still i am curious how some get catalyst 8.9 AGP Hotfix to work with VMR 9 and DXVA on high bitrate titles in full screen with 1920x1080 native display resolution. The problems are much less severe on lower resolutions and if the playback is not fullscreen.

Casshern
Well, the poster I quoted use MPC-HC and not ZP. Did you use the latest stand-alone filter?

Well, the poster I quoted use MPC-HC and not ZP. Did you use the latest stand-alone filter?
I tried both - no luck. With my configuration:
MSI 2600 HD 512 MB AGP
VMR 9 Renderless WIN XP
Display 1920x1080
Zoomed to fullscreen
High Bitrate H264 Content
both Zoomplayer and MPC HC (801 and previous versions) with internal as well as standalone filters exhibit jumping frames and corruption when DXVA is enabled
Only VMR 7 with the MPC standalone filter in Zoomplayer works fine with DXVA.
I reckon that somehow the drivers i tried 8.4, 8.5 and 8.9 do not properly allocate the VMR 9 buffers on my graphic card. Playback in VMR 9 looks like the wrong framebuffers are shown (pevious frames, improper frames where decoding is still in progress etc). If anybody knows a driver, setting and or registry to make DXVA work with VMR 9 with the above configuration, let me know. I applied all the exdeus regtweaks 0.15 (maxresize sortooverride etc.) and tried all conceivable settings.

Casshern

Drivers? 8.6 had the exact same problems you're describing, it was fixed in 8.7 .
To all, it'd be nice to add your system specs to your sig.

Hello,
First time posting here and I want to tell you what an awesome work you're doing with mpc-hc. I honestly don't use other players (vlc, kmplayer) anymore, only mpc-hc. With that being said, I'm looking for help regarding the following matter: when playing mkv files, the video is a little jerky and I notice the player is dropping a lot of frames. The files are playing just fine on any other player.
I use mpc-hc svn 807, don't use any codecs pack. My configuration is:
- intel dual core 6320
- 4GB RAM
- videocard nvidia 8500GT
- windows xp pro sp3
- latest directx (august)
- video drivers 178.13 whql
I'd really appreciate any help. Thank you. :)
Install the Haali splitter, and select "Disable Gabest's MKV splitter" when asked. The built in mkv splitter has problems.

My 7800gtx died, and now I have an ATI 4850 with my 4600 X2, and my hi-def videos play better than ever. No need for coreavc anymore! And, shaders work(I thought they didn't with dxva) ???

As I said previously VMR 9 mode now works with the 8.9 catalyst hotfix drivers on my MSI 2600 HD 256 MB AGP card (without any regtweaks whatsoever). Are you using the remove-tearing feature of MPC-HC v.1.1.604.0? I just did a quick test with test video file 1 from http://ranpha.wordpress.com/page-1/ and I also get frame jumping if I don't set the remove-tearing option. I also have the the Lock back-buffer enabled.
Have you tried removing all your (reg)tweaks, running Driver Cleaner in safe mode and then installing Catalyst 8.9 hotfix drivers?

v.801 MPC Video Decoder works 100% with DXVA in Vista WMP11 and VMC, no more Catalyst drivers crashing or blue screen of deaths, ty so much :). (Catalyst 8.9 and Radeon 4850).
Only (minor) problem is that when using DXVA instead of ffmpeg, both WMP11 and Vista Media Center starts playback in 4:3 AR, I have to minimize player and then go back to full screen mode for movie to play in 16:9.
It's stange that this won't happen when using ffmpeg in MPC Video Decoder. Anyone have any ideas what might be causing this behavior?

I'll look into what needs to be done to get it working properly.
Edit: PNG image writing I mean.
Edit2: This shouldn't be too hard to do but will probably take some time for me to get my head around the current ISO PNG specifications so I can conform to them when saving images. No idea on time frame just depends on how well i fare for spare time in the couple of weeks. If there is any ideas or things you guys want added for the PNG capturing such as being able to specify bit depth, output resolution, compression level, and so on. I rather take the time to figure out exactly what I need to write so I can try and implement it in one go while its fresh in my head.
Is there any other major formats for image capture that generally would be worth adding support for and would go used by more than half a dozen people? I got the spec sheets for the new MS HD Photo format which looks promising need to go over them and see whether it is worth using. It seems to be a somewhat equivalent format to PNG so may have potential depending mostly on third party software support at present.

Hi! I guess now I understand MPC HC h264 Video Decoder seems limited to h264 videos with ref#<=11 for all h264 settings whether high or main and video frame size/rate... at least based on a PCI ATi HD2400Pro.
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1190192#post1190192
Is this ref#<=11 a limitation:
- due to bitstream decoding technology?
- MPC HC miscalculation of the ref# limit?
- ...
Also, I know GPU assisted h264 decoding is much harder to implement than bitstream, but is there a plan to do implement GPU through DXVA h264 assisted decoding?
Not asking for implementation, just wondering.

What graphics card do you have?
Usually there's an option in the driver's control panel (or some other utility like ATI Tray Tools) to force a refresh rate for games somewhere in there, and the "Direct3D Fullscreen" option does the exact same thing games do - use Direct3D in fullscreen.

Hi,
@ashlar42: This behavior is not normal.
I am using D3Dfullscreen on a second monitor ( my HDTV ) and it always keeps the framerate that was selected before starting the playback. Nevertheless, I am not using reclock at all.
Since I have four different refresh rates at hand, from which I am selecting the appropriate one prior to the start of mpc, so there is no need for reclock to be used. The framerates are ( of course ) 23,976 Hz progressive, 25 Hz progressive, 50 Hz interlace and 59,94 Hz interlace, depending on the footage played back.

Yes it is limited do 11 reference frames for 720p and to 4 Ref frames for 1080p (I think) (Hardware/DXVA limitation).
Theres a registry setting to override limitation but I don't remember it, the videos will not play properly because they are not dxva compilant (+11ref frames) giving macroblocks or green screen.
There's no intention of providing assisted decoding.
And yes you should use search!

What I don't understand is why the same option (I guess it does the same thing) in Zoom Player is not showing the same behaviour.
Also, when I press CTRL+F it does not go out of the Fullscreen Direct3D mode. I have to quit MPC to exit. Is it normal?
A different question (related): if I install the standalone codecs, is there a way to configure them in a different player (ie. Zoom) so that they decode h264 only when DXVA is possible and switch back to a different codec (in my case CoreAVC) when DXVA is not available? From MPC-HC this function is clear.

Are you sure Zoomplayer is set to use Direct3D exclusive mode? (Which is what "Direct3D fullscreen" does in MPC-HC - can't say how or where you'd do that in ZP as I haven't used it in ages...)
Because if it isn't it just uses plain regular Direct3D in a window on the desktop for displaying the video.

I add PNG format to "Save Image..."/"Save Thumbnails...", testing - http://www.tosei.ru/isoft/mpc/mplayerc_813_png.7z

Because if it isn't it just uses plain regular Direct3D in a window on the desktop for displaying the video. The option is called "Use Exclusive Fullscreen with VMR9 Renderless mode".
Inmatrix website describes it like this:
"When the video renderer is set to VMR9 Renderless, enabling this checkbox enables "Exclusive Fullscreen" mode. This means that when Zoom Player goes fullscreen, it prevents background applications from accessing the monitor. This can improve image smoothness with bad drivers, but at the cost of eliminating access to background application and even to Zoom Player's own navigation interfaces. Use with care."
In the help section on the website it mentions:
"VMR9: Renderless
This is the most complex VMR9 rendering mode. It can work in Direct3D exclusive mode which means the entire machine is set to fullscreen and no background application are allowed access to the video hardware. Under Direct3D Exclusive Mode, less CPU is required to play videos and depending on the resolution of the video, playback may be smoother. The downside is that in Direct3D Exclusive mode, your computer is wholly dedicated to video playback and you won't be able to perform any other tasks."
I'd say it's the same thing.
