i just assembled a new core i7 920 system running at 3.9 ghz...

using graysky's x264 benchmark (720p) i am getting ~93 fps on the first pass and ~36 fps on the second pass.

on both passes the cpu is being used ~100%

i am encoding a 1080p mkv now with ripbot264 and the first pass is only going at about ~24fps using ~50% of the 8 cpu threads available. i would expect about twice that (it seems 720p/1080p is about 2:1 as far as fps on equivalent hardware). i had done another 1080p mkv and i got twice the performance of my old q6600 @ 3ghz on the seconds pass about 8 fps compared to ~16 fps on the new core i7 setup.

so my question is why is x264 in ripbot only using ~50% of my cpu on the first pass when i can use the x264 benchmark and see it use 100% of my cpu on both passes just not the second?

i obviously unchecked run in low priority in the gui and i also tried making the priority of the x264.exe process higher and it doesn't have any effect.

i am basically wondering why the first pass is not maxing out the cpu when the second pass does...

Hi All,

I have a little question, please,

I would like to know if I respect the "standard" of AVCHD for create a movie with this setting :

--level 4.1 --aud --nal-hrd --vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000 --filter 1,1 --ref 14 --mixed-refs --bframes 8 --b-adapt 2 --weightb --direct auto --subme 7 --trellis 2 --partitions p8x8,b8x8,i4x4,i8x8 --8x8dct --me esa --threads auto --thread-input --progress --no-psnr --no-ssim

It's for "Journey to the Center of Earth Blu-ray" 3D ; It's for a DVD+R DL, and "LG BD-300" for my TV

Please (and I am very, very sorry for my English )

@noosy:
Your settings are not avchd compatible. The megui profile looks like that
--level 4.1 --keyint 24 --min-keyint 2 --ref 3 --mixed-refs --bframes 3 --vbv-bufsize 16500 --vbv-maxrate 16500 --aud --nal-hrd
(Quality options not included in the above)
The wikipedia article says max-bitrate can 24Mbps but you'll have to try yourself.
The problems with your options were too many b-frames, too many refs and to big max bitrate and buffer size.
By the way if you use --trellis 2 and --me esa you might as well use --subme 9. That will probably bring more benefit than --me esa has over --me umh at less speed cost.

edit:
I forgot that avchd also allows only certain video resolutions. You can find a complete list in the english "AVCHD" article on wikipedia.

@nurbs:
Thanx for your response...

I wish I could use --subme 9 with RipBot264 1.12.0 but the film is in VC-1 and there is a problem with FFDSHOW which decodes to "libavcodec" instead of "WM9" I'm going to use RipBot264 v1.11.5 . I just want to create a directory Bluray film to be burned to a DVD + R DL to play on my TV as you an idea of the settings I can use to obtain the best possible quality for compression so important?

edit:
missing response;

If I use this setting : --level 4.1 --aud --nal-hrd --vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000 --filter 1,1 --ref 4 --mixed-refs --bframes 3 --b-adapt 2 --weightb --direct auto --

subme 9 --trellis 2 --partitions p8x8,b8x8,i4x4,i8x8 --8x8dct --me esa --threads auto --thread-input --progress --no-psnr --no-ssim

appropriate quality, or can I do better?

nurbs
29th January 2009, 12:23
Looks fine quality wise, but as I said --vbv-bufsize 50000, --vbv-maxrate 50000 and --ref 4 are too high if you want to be avchd compatible (at least according to the megui profile) and you'll have to use --keyint 24 and --min-keyint 2.
In my opinion --me esa isn't worth it, --me umh would be faster and I doubt you could tell the difference.

What's wrong with default Level 4.0 profile???? It's already compatible with AVCHD!!! You really like to complicate simple things!

Isn't the short keyframe intervall something you should use for avchd, like for blu-ray? I know in practice the blu-ray players don't care about it, but it's still in the spec.

Atak_Snajpera

Real life shows that you don't have to mess with those values. I don't care about stupid spec if even manufactures do not care about them.

Hi,

To play a movie Bluray burned to a DVD + R DL, it must be compatible AVCHD?

The default profile Atak-Snajpera will be compatible with players? (no Playstation!)

If so can I improve the quality of video delivered to this profile by changing the parameters?

Here is what I usually (but I think I did any of the "standard") : --level 4.1 --aud --nal-hrd --vbv-bufsize 50000 --vbv-maxrate 50000 --filter 1,1 --ref 4 --mixed-refs --bframes 3 --b-adapt 2 --weightb --direct auto --subme 9 --trellis 2 --partitions p8x8,b8x8,i4x4,i8x8 --8x8dct --me esa --threads auto --thread-input --progress --no-psnr --no-ssim

Only these two options will give you noticeable better quality --b-adapt 2 and --subme 9 . DO NOT MODIFY REST OF OPTIONS!!!

The default profile Atak-Snajpera will be compatible with players? (no Playstation!)
Can you read? What's the description of Level 4.0 profile???

Do you think for a movie about 1:40 in VC-1 I can get something acceptable on a DVD + R DL using your profile as you just changed me as stated? It is for a FULL-HD TV ...
Should I crop and add the black bars if I leave in 1080 or do I do if I do the movie in 720p

(Do not see anything wrong in my question, I have not yet been able to consider what it gave on TV and I do not know at what point it is better to reduce the resolution - I have not bought my Bluray player Salon)

My questions may be stupid - but I do not know anything

You must be reading a different wikipedia than I am. :) Mine says a High @ 4.1 Profile allows for a 62.5 Mbit/s bitrate. 25 Mbit/s is for a 4.0 Profile.

AVCHD specs aren't the same as blu-ray. You must be reading h.264/AVC.

the AVCHD format's maximum bitrate of 24 Mbit/s

@slow4mula - if you have other filters (e.g. resize as you are doing 1080p -> 720p) they are not necessarily multithreaded, and become the bottleneck, not the actual x264 encoding which isn't being "fed" fast enough

Also some settings within x264 (e.g. --b-adapt 2) are not multithreaded, and become the bottleneck.

You're right: was reading the wrong wiki my own self. :) It says, though:

Up to 24 Mbit/s (AVCHD conforming to H264 High-Profile, Level 4.1)

That doesn't sound right, though: if it conforms to H264 High-Profile, Level 4.1, then maybe someone else misread the H264 wiki instead? :)

I use "--b-adapt 2" too, and x264 is always at (near) 100% on all cores.

Could be an effect of the hyperthreading, too, btw (~50% max for each of the 2 logical CPU's per core?) If so, it wouldn't be working very efficiently, though.

Hi Atak,

I have an MKV HD 720p movie with image @ 25fps, and want to convert with ripbot264 @ 23,97fps but audio is not sync.

I try to set manual audio at 640 kbps with STRETCH, CUT and OFF option and it's all the time out of sync.

I convert it with 25fps but my bluray not reconized. It's why i've try to convert in 23,97fps but i really don't know what to do.

I have two movies are the samething trouble.

Could you help me please?

Latest ffdshow, ripbot 1.12.0, avisynth 2.5.8 latest rc build of CLSID build, etc. Try with 2 pc and same trouble.

great program! definately the best compression:quality ratio i've seen for mp4!

few questions. is it possible to batch a group of files? (*.mov > *.mp4 H.264).

I am trying to batch a bunch of tutorials that I have on DVD. one of the mov files I am talking about is here (please look at #2. Creating Illustrator Documents > "Libraries and content"): Link (http://anonym.to/?http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modPage.asp?ID=718)

its generally very static screens, but i would love to keep the sharp quality, the only thing I've noticed is that (using the HD blueray default setting), the light grays come out pure white, bleaching out some of the lighter tones. what can I change to improve this? the only tweak i made was to the audio to 96khz from 128.

also, sometimes for the audio, i have to copy/paste in the location of the mov file for it to see the audio (as *sometimes* it is totally blank and doesn't show any mov files in the source file folder)

thanks for any help.

OT: do you guys recommend a better format for these kind of tutorial files?

I wonder if it's a win7 UAC problem. I'll dig around the program data folder when I get home and see if I have two versions somehow.

Check the date of splitter.ax

I have Windows 7 as well and I have no problems. On Vista also no problems.

Did you install this http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/
YOU MUST HAVE LATEST HAALI MEDIA SPLITTER
11/01/2009

C:\Program Files\Haali\MatroskaSplitter\splitter.ax must not be older than 10-01-‎2009 ‏‎22:17:14

I'm having the same problem. A relatively clean Win7 64-bit install. 1.12 was working perfectly. I've uninstalled and reinstalled with no luck. Is there any way to disable the check?

Edit the ripbot264.ini file.

I'm 2 for 2 both my systems are encountering the problem, XP and Vista64.

I'm having the same problem. I even uninstalled and reinstalled it. I disabled the software check as a temporary work around.

I can not get it to install,I want to update on my pc as well and should I uninstall version 12 first?I hate to get rid of it if I can not get it to install.I tried on my friends pc and my girlfriends pc,said that haali media splitter was not installed, but it is,and has been.I tried to uninstall the haali media splitter and reinstall it but no luck.I did install the 1-11-2009 version, can anyone tell me what to do?
On my pc I have the 10-1-2009,can I just use this one? Which one do you have installed Atak?

EDIT: Double check;

The Version http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/ direct download offert only 10-01-2009 and the description is 11-01-2009.

Alternative download: Samething.

Did anyone has the link for download the 11-01-2009 version ?

I think that mastroska make an error with the date release. Can you correct the version info?

I want to test different ripbot settings and I'm trying to cut out a piece from a blu-ray movie (~30MB) so I don't have to wait hours for it to encode, I used tsmuxer's slpit & cut and it works with mpc-hc but when I load it into ripbot it gives me an error... I tried megui and it gave me an error too, something about there is no video header. Is there any tool that will allow me to do a proper cut?

Just testing new version now - notice that It reports bluray movie as having 24fps instead of the usual 23.976 - hope this doesn't effect the syncing of the movie??

Lol - looks like I'll have to go back to old version:
Ripbot log:

E:\>"E:\E Downloads\BLURAY\RipBot264v1.13.0\tools\x264\x264.exe" "E:\Temp\RipBot264temp\job1\job1.avs" --pass 1 --bitrate 6198 --stats "E:\Temp\RipBot264temp\job1\job1.stats" --sar 1:1 --level 4.0 --aud --nal-hrd --vbv-bufsize 25000 --vbv-maxrate 25000 --filter 0,0 --ref 3 --mixed-refs --bframes 3 --b-adapt 1 --weightb --direct auto --subme 7 --trellis 1 --partitions all --8x8dct --me umh --threads auto --thread-input --progress --no-psnr --no-ssim --partitions none --subme 3 --me dia --output "E:\Temp\RipBot264temp\video.264"

E:\E Downloads\BLURAY\RipBot264v1.13.0\tools\x264\x264.exe: unknown option -- nal-hrd

Just reverted back to RipBot264v1.12.0 and still reports as 24 fps, but the program now runs without the nal-hrd error - Could this be because of the new Haali media splitter version or the latest FFdshow ( using ffdshow_rev2633_20090130_clsid_mt.exe).?
