i want to Encode a Movie. When i run Ripbot, After Pass1 a BLUE Screen appears & my PC ReStarted.
What will i do Now?

OS: XP SP2,

I've been using the Apple TV profile for quiet a long time, doing a two pass bit rate set to 6144 and never had any issues with any of my content. Time and file size are of no concern to me however I've had some free time and started playing around using same profile and using CQ 18 and CQ 20 instead of 2 pass and have found I'm getting random blockiness in my test encodes. For instance the opening sequence of Monsters Inc where the Disney castle and then the Pixar logo come up are blocky. Playback of the rest of the encode only showed two more instances of blockiness. Everything else looked good.

Now playback on the PC looks fine and issue only shows up when I stream to the Apple TV so I know the problem has to be with that device just not sure why the Apple TV would be displaying the issue.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I do plan on redoing my test encode with 14.5 just to see if issue is reproduceable with different version of x264.

Check if the file has been encoded with --weightp 2. AppleTV can't handle that. You can encode with --weightp 1 or get a better media player.

My question is:

Would it be possible to add support for full Dolby digital 5.1 in mp4 format?

also is there a way to rip blu-ray video in full quality "source bit-rate" to mp4? this is because i want to rip my blurays to mp4, but i want to keep all the picture detail in full, as goes for the video.

In case of performance and easy handling your tool is unbeaten, but is there any way to let you rethink your decision not to support multiple audio streams? Sure I can mux with other tools, but why not doing it allinone? The fact that I'm not the first asking for that maybe helps changing your mind?

Remuxing from one container to another takes only few minutes! Just use MKV. You can expect even more devices with mkv support in future. Even now you can buy blu-ray players with mkv support! No need to use stupid limited MP4!

I try to load in an AVI file and MPC pops up and say "There's no combination of filters to render the stream" something like that. I installed latest K-Lite (It has latest rev of FFDShow and Haali Splitter) then uninstall and reboot and reinstall. I also tried installing FFDShow, Avisynth and Haali manually (not using K-Lite). It will stil show that. I'm using the latest RipBot.

For DOWNFALL:
Dolby Digital in mp4 ... is not a good choice, now many players cannot read this, but this can change in future. Use mkv to keep Dolby Digital 5.1.
If you want to keep "all the picture detail in full" and to keep Dolby Digital 5.1 ... you don't need conversion to mp4 or mkv ... just play the original .m2ts video file from the Blu-Ray folder (if you have more than 1 of these .m2ts files from a Blu-Ray movie, join them in one .m2ts file with tsMuxeR )
If you want to save space ... you can use the latest version of RipBot264 with CQ=20 and the picture will be almost the same as from Blu-Ray, or use CQ=22 for more space saved.

About transparency ... MP3 is transparent or close to this, for the majority of people, at 192 kbit/s , and this doesn't stop people to use FLAC at around 800 kbit/s or for Blu-Ray movies to have much higher bitrates.
For classical or instrumental music, for me higher bitrates makes the difference (I see that also others use and demand FLAC for classical music instead to be satisfied with MP3 at 320 kbit/s) ... but for Blu-Ray movies I don't care for higher bitrates, because for me the image of the movie is more important than the audio (but for others the audio quality in 5.1 and 7.1 channels is more important than the image quality at movies). For videos filmed by me with Dolby Digital 448 kbit/s it is important to keep the maximum audio quality, in mp4 with AAC 448 kbit/s.
Some people hear better than others, and the transparency is not equal to all.
The transparency, I think, is influenced by the music genre, by how good or bad the listener hears, and by the audio hardware (transparency cannot be the same, for the same music, on a stereo audio hardware and on 5.1 or 7.1 audio hardware).

@nurbs. Thanks for quick response. I'm not using weightp but am familiar with it not working on atv thanks to a change in Quicktime. I did go back to 14.5 and ran my test encode and spot that was consistently blocky on the atv was no longer blocky. Now there may be other areas that are blocky but am going to have to sit down and watch the entire flick just to make sure.

Just to be sure, you know that --weightp 2 is the default on all current x264 builds. You have to explicitly disable it if you don't want to use it.

You could just use the 4.0 Bluray Profile. I don't notice any difference from the original Bluray movie. If I'm just putting a Bluray movie/tv shows into a mkv container I use Makemkv (TV shows) or use command line of eac3to (movies) to put movie into mkv container. Both these option will allow you to get rid of the extra items on the bluray that you don't need or want.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the blocking you see is related with the frame reordering x264 does when --weightp 2 is used. The reordering practically gives you 2 free reference frames in some cases. In my own encodes (720p; --ref 5) those extra refs are only used very seldom ( <1% in the final statistics ). They are used more often in encodes with less reference frames from what I have seen, but I only did a few tests. I think you can only see the artifacts when this is actually used and I guess it's also related to how much of the picture actually references those frames.
Of course everything I wrote might be wrong since I don't know how the encoding works in detail.

If you don't actually need the Apple TV I'd recommend a WD TV (http://www.wdc.com/en/products/index.asp?cat=30). I got the one on the right for 80€ (+100€ for a 1.5 TB harddrive) and it plays practically everything you throw at it. My own encodes (AVC, AAC and VobSUBs in MKV) play fine. Even the muxed subtitles work. I hear the Popcornhour and Xstreamer media players are also good.

I think you are correct and may explain why 14.5 didnt exhibit issue (*still have to watch full film to confirm) since weightp wasnt turned on/available in the version of x264 that was bundled. Going to do another test with 14.6 and starting off with weightp disabled (0) as that is route handbrake folks went for their apple tv profile and see if the issue is resolved. If that looks good I'll bump value up to 1 and see where that leaves me.

nurbs, great suggestion. However, if I may. I bought two of the WD TV Lives' (one in center of your link). One big thing the Live has over lower priced first WD is DTS downmixing.

Defining --weightp 0 to the Apple TV profile and encoding using CQ 20 produced a nice file with no blockiness. I'm going continue testing trying a value of 1 out of curiosity but from reading handbrake forum weightp is broken on the Apple TV and so you must set this setting to 0.

On separate note on media player choices while I know the atv isnt best device out there for most folks due to lack of codec support however it does provide the best interface of any media player on the market and integration with iTunes ensures you can get legit content easily even if its drm'd to death. If I were to move away from it I'd probably move to a mac mini.

The interface of the WD TV is not at all pretty, but functional. Best interface is highly subjective. Personally I prefer interfaces that simply let me browse folders on a harddrive.
Furthermore I'd view having to use iTunes as a negative point. The store is nice (for DRM free audio at least), but I view the whole device syncing with iTunes and such as an unnecessary complication to a fundamentally easy process (open two explorer windows; drag & drop; done).

Somehow RipBot seems more convenient to me :) and I haven't seen in it any features except possibility to add multiple audio tracks at once.

I don't need extra audio because I like more original soundtrack. It does not matter if movies is in Chinese (Shaolin Soccer...) or Korean (My Sassy Girl...) or Thai (Ong Bak...).
I was raised in country where you don't have stupid dubbed versions in cinemas (Full translations with native actors). Whenever I hear Brat Pit or any holywood actor speaking in German or in Hungarian I laugh (I've got colleague from Hungary at work :) However There was one exception. I liked more Polish version of Shrek because jokes were adjusted to our culture. Also actors' voices were well chosen.

There may be a problem with selectable subtitles in your latest version. Nothing is showing up in the dialog box to add. This is regardless of the subtitle stream I initially select and happens on every rip I try to encode. The previous version of RipBot works fine.

I figured out the problem. When I click the + button, RipBot is by default looking for the .sup in the location where I have my rip and not the job1 folder. I simple have to navigate to the job1 folder and select the file. Weird as I never had to do that before. Must be a Win 7 thing? Or, maybe because I have RipBot and my Blu-ray rip on two different drives.

Until now I haven't... I have been afraid it will ruin video at the point of just hibernating and waking-up... but I'll try and say results, thanks for suggestion ;)
