I just tried to copy the method of BD Rebuilder.
Nor is it possible to do what you say ... is not so simple.
The cut of a video 720x480 AR 4:3 when you force to AR 16:9 will always be greater.
In this particular case, the BD Rebuilder does all this automatically: It computes, resize and crop.
This issue of CROP is the most tedious in the coding.

The RipBot is very good because it automatically recognizes the Aspect Ratio and gives you the best resolution. Only in this case it does not.

I have been using ripbot for a while to do both video and audio with no issues. But lately I've been using eac3to to get dtsma, truehd audio etc, and ripbot for just the video. Then use mkvmerge. But I've noticed on all of the videos there is the slightest of sync problems. The audio is always slightly ahead of the video. Again it's not way off, but when comparing to the original blu-ray I can see the difference. I know I can add delay in mkvmerge but that's hit or miss. I am trying the same video in handbrake and will see if I have the same issues. Are there any suggestions on what else to try? Thanks for the help.

pull the playlist from the original bluray into tsmuxer and look at the audio track
does it have delay on the original disc itself?
are you messing with the framerate at all? perhaps changing 24fps to 23.976fps

tsmuxer nor eac3to show any delay (eac3to normally fixes this). Also I dont change much of anything in ripbot. Just doing a 2 pass to mkv. I looked back at the job and the framerate was greyed out 23.976, but I've never changed it (and can't seem to).

yeah in order to change the framerate you would have to go into properties for the vid stream

Anyone have issues extracting v1.16.?. When I use 7zip and try to extract I get the error messages about unsupported compression method for each of the files (about 542 messages)

that's what happens when you use dumb software like 7zip =)
I'm guessing you either have an old version of 7zip or your download got corrupted (download it again)

Yup, just updated to the latest 7z and that did the trick. Want to test out the new HD interlaced profile as 1080i always causes issues.

I just used RipBot to create mkv's out of a DVD's vob's, then used mkvmerge to put them together. The result is 734MB, but the original vob's sum to 4.3GB. The small mkv looks to be the same quality as the vob's. Is mkv always this good? Is there something I'm not understanding here about losing/preserving quality?

Finished testing the new HD interlaced profile on a 1080i BluRay that I have been having a lot of problems with. The new profile worked great!

there are a lot of factors to consider here
you are probably dropping multiple audio / subtitle tracks (maybe even a secondary video track)
so that's going to drop the size down.
you're probably encoding the movie only, where as the original dvd may have a bunch of extras and such
if you're encoding animated stuff it can be compressed A LOT without losing any noticeable quality

I don't know what settings you're using for resolution or quality or audio. these all impact filesize as well

just putting something in an MKV container doesn't really give you a substantial reduction in filesize. the encoding is what's dropping the filesize. h264 is better than MPEG2 though.

personally I'd suggest that you set your CQ value lower (lower CQ # = higher quality)
or if you really want lossless...just remux the vobs to mkv without doing any encoding

I have encoded some video files with RipBot264 from avi source to mp4.
Now I want to add poster on those files without re-encoding the whole stream. I didn't find that option on any muxing GUI. (only mkvMerge probably have it under attachment tab. but it produces .mkv only. I need .mp4 container).

Can anybody help me on this?

looks like YAMB will do it as long as you have mp4tags (part of mpeg4ip tools)

alright, if you're lookin to do just a mux/lossless mkvmerge will auto recognize multiple subsequent vobs. so you just have to add the first one and then mux, it'll do the rest for ya

To my knowledge there should be no need to deinterlace 1080p content. Can you confirm what profile you are using?

- to be able to run Ripbot I had to install ffdshow for 32 ( otherwise it does not work ) and to be able to play / watch any movie in MPCHomecinema I had to install ffdshow for 64
I don't think this is a proper way but it is the only one that works.
Maybe I didn't found a proper version for these two softs ( you can help me with a link !!! :D )

The reason I asked is because there are now 2 4.1 profiles (One is progressive which you would use for 1080p, and one is interlaced which you would use for 1080i). Wasn't sure which profile you used (the new profiles exist with the latest build Atak just released)

Not sure TBH. So far with the latest RipBot I have only tested the 4.1 Interlaced profile, haven't tested the Progressive profile

I also use Windows 7 64 bit long ago and never used the MPC-HC 64 bit version, it was never mandatory.

For I know the Atak always uses the latest available revision of ffdshow 32 bit.

OK, this may sound like a simple question, but now I'm confused with these new 4.0 profiles. I don't encode HD blu rays, but instead the good old fashioned standard def DVD. In the past, I've always used High 4.0 Profile and had to check each video to see if there was interlacing and then make the appropriate adjustments (inverse telecine, restore 23.976 fps, etc). I've searched all over the internet (including this 10-mile long thread) for an answer to know prevail, so I need to ask after all these years. What profile should I actually be using for standard def DVD's? Should I be using Main 3.0 Profile? I always thought the profile was based on what type of player you'd be using and its capabilities to decode the video (I actually use a WDTV to play my MKV files), not the source video itself (i.e. 1080i, 1080p, 720p, 480p, 480i). But now these new 4.0 profiles (progressive / interlaced) lead to me to believe the profile choice should be based on the video source. I would appreciate any clarity on what the ideal profile should be for 480p/i standard def DVDs. Thanks.

Based on the tables on this site, does it mean there is no benefit encoding standard def DVDs (mostly 720x480) using Level 4.0 if there's no upsampling (or whatever it's called) to a higher resolution (720p/1080p)? I don't understand most of the stuff on that wiki page (but I'm slowly learning). However, the table leads me to believe if I'm encoding 480p source material, then I should be using Level 3.0 (which is the Main profile in Ripbot's settings). Yet, something tells me that's not right either.

Is there not a simple answer to my question? What is the appropriate profile for standard def DVDs?

If that is the case, then what is the purpose of the two new profiles in v1.16.5? Are [High 4.0] HD, Interlaced and [High 4.0] HD, Progressive output specific? To me it sounds like these two new profiles are input specific based on the source of the HD material. Hence my confusion.

OK, so let me get this straight. All of the profiles up until this latest release were designed with the "end results" in mind based on decoder support (Ipod/Ipad/AppleTV/Consoles/HD Players/etc). But these new HD profiles are designed based on the "beginning source" in mind (interlaced/progressive HD sources). That's going to confuse a lot of newbies like me. I don't see the need for this interlaced profile if the setting already exists in the video property page under deinterlace options where one can activate tff or inverse telecine if you have an interlaced source. What happens if you activate the switch in the video properties settings AND choose the HD Interlace profile? Do they cancel each other out?

And shouldn't inverse telecine be used more frequently for interlaced films instead of TFF? Don't most interlaced films use 2:3 pulldown? I always thought inverse telecine and restore 23.9 fps (decimate option turns on by default when inverse telecine is selected) should be used when interlaced sourced film was detected with a 2:3 pulldown pattern, and that TFF should be used for other interlaced sources with no pattern, like TV shows and other higher fps source material.

Obviously I need help. My questions have expanded beyond "what profile should I use for SD DVDs", which by the way still hasn't been answered.

I didn't really read all you said there
but the interlaced profile is to OUTPUT interlaced video ( that's silly...why would anyone do that, right? seems there's a need for it in for certain things =P )
and the progressive one is the same as the previous 4.0...it's just called progressive now to better differentiate between it and the interlaced one
