I am trying to rip a blu-ray to and iPad compatible MP4 (720p) that can also do double duty on my HTPC with 5.1 audio. I am hoping to get forced subtitles as well as chapter markers. It's the chapter markers that is driving me crazy. I just can't seem to find any setting or option for them although RipBot obviously know they're there? Am I missing something obvious or does RipBot just not do chapter markers?

I thought I'd try to bump this once since I didn't get any replies. Are chapter markers just not possible in MP4s with RipBot?

I apologize for my delay in posting this but I wanted to bring this to your attention and see if it is an issue. A couple of months ago, I had two videos that I was recoding from Blu-ray to MKV. I had the option to choose either the 3-channel audio or a single channel audio version of the movie. When I chose the 3-channel audio version, Ripbot would finish completely (after about 5 or 6 hours work) and not report any error messages, however there would be no output file. If I chose the single channel audio and kept every other option the same, the recoding would work, no problem. This was true of both movies that I tried that had foreign language 3-channel audio. Here are the files that pertain to both options (from one of the movies) for you to examine, screenshots and logs included...

--slices 4 and --min-keyint 1 --keyint 24.
--sclices 4 divides frame by 4. Each splice is decoded independently by decoder. (Multithreading decoding)
--keyint 24 forces key frame every second. Short gop reduces compression and may cause 'frame pulsing' issue with low bitrate.

As you can see strict blu-ray profile will give worse quality than regular 4.0. Your choice :)

Yes, it seems to put chapter markers in MP4s for playback in VLC where you can skip to the next chapter.

What I was looking for though is the chapter list pop-up when playing back on Apple devices like and iPad or in iTunes. The typical "Digital Copy" mp4/m4v you get with a BD or DVD has this and I wanted to see if I could get it with RipBot. Handbrake does it but it doesn't do BDs of course.

I've created my own profile, which includes the parameters --keyint 24 --min-keyint 1. However, after encoding I checked the job log and it says --min-keyint 24 --keyint 240 as well as my parameters. When encoding what is it using? Example command from log:

maybe if you used a bluray player you'd want these...but your use of crf indicates that's not the case

does your profile still have the correct switches?
I see the correct switches in your log there, as well as the alternate ones. the 24/240 I think is x264's default

oh, good idea. I'm not sure on your keyframe issue. All of my encodes have been done without having them though, and they still play.
You do also know that video needs to be 1920x1080 or 1280x720 (there are a couple others but those are the main 2) for bluray compliance, right?

I've done negative timings with audio before but never tried it with subtitles, mkvmerge might consider it a 'video track'. I can tell you than you can easily edit timecodes using a subtitle tool such as subtitle workshop. or specifically for your case it even has a 'delay' setting where you can put in negative delay

Hi,

I have a Blu-ray structure on my hdd. I want to convert it to mkv. I have converted another source before and it was successful. But i have a problem now.
I've opened the source with ripbot. The program analyzed the source and gave me a panel with some choice. There is about 10 audio track in the list. I only want the english DTS. I chosed it then clicked OK. After that ripbot started to demux. After demux i got the main window of ripbot. I set the video size and the method...etc. But i could not choose the "direct steam copy" in the audio section if I clicked on the mkv format. Only if i choose the avchd format. In mkv format ripbot wants to convert the audio to ac3 os something else. I searched the temporary files and I found that the demuxed video is in mkv format already but the demuxed DTS has a .w36 (im not sure but someting like this) extension.

I have tried another way. In that panel where i choosed the dts audio there was an FLAC switch. I have tried that too. I switched it on and restart the entire process. It started to demux but insted of 20 minutes it ran all night but there was no result. I just saw the "Gathering information..." string.

Anyone can help?

Hi pacaveli211 - yes of course, I'm not cropping the video at all.

If 24/240 is default to x264, or even to either --preset medium or --level 4.1, I wouldn't have expected to see it in the log as an additional parameter? I thought I'd only see it in the log if I've specifically typed these parameters in my command line - which I obviously did with 1/24 to over-ride the default. I have a feeling that RipBot is entering 24/240 in my command line. Atak, could you confirm if this is the case?

EDIT: I asked this question over at Doom10 and someone replied that if there are duplicate options in the command line, x264 will use the ones given last.

For the record, I had to take the \Tools\Fonts\consola.ttf and install it in the C:\windows\fonts folder and all is back to normal. Tx.

ripbot doesn't support copying HD audio tracks. if you want the HD track, or just the core even, you'll need to do some work outside of ripbot
for the full HD track, encode the video only and then mux it in after the encode
if you just want the core, use tsMuxeR or eac3to to extract the core and then choose that as your audio track with ripbot
it will allow you to 'copy stream' with it

But I have another problem now. I tried to put my files to TSMuxer but I have 120 files in the stream directory. TS muxer dont allow multiple drag and drop. How can I easily demux the DTS audio from the entire movie?

most blurays have the main movie in a single m2ts file (it's going to be the 25GB+ one, switch your folder view to details)
if you're still unsure or if you have a bluray which has seamless branching (which will usually have multiple m2ts for the main movie)
you can scan it with BDinfo and find which playlist is for the main movie and then drop that into tsmuxer
also...when demuxing audio from a bluray with seamless branching you may want to use eac3to in case of audio overlaps

ripbot does the audio encoding first. so you could just add the job....run it till the audio finishes and then cancel it (grab the audio track before you cancel or it'll get deleted)
the audio track will be in your temp folder
this will leave you needing to do the mux yourself
or....you could just encode the audio with eac3to - this is probably what ripbot uses to encode the audio anyways

ripbot doesn't change framerate unless you have an unusual/non-standard framerate, like 18fps or something weird. or....unless you tell it to, obviously.
what is the framerate of your video?

MediaInfo reports it as a 24fps video but Ripbot recognizes it as 25fps.
Changing it to 24 sets the audio tabs duration to 0:00.
Right duration should be 23min 24s 672ms.

Encoding with 25fps gives no audio.

Oh sorry said it wrong. Encoding with 25fps results in A/V out of sync
Encoding with 24 creates a video with no audio.
Hmm remuxing would take me too long. Using Handbrake for now.

Don't know what the problem is hope another one can have a look at it.

are pipebuf and avs2yuv even needed anymore, i though x264 had native avs support integrated a while back. if they are required is there anyway to use the ffdshow dxva plugin to decode the image before encoding because both pipebuf and avs2yuv use up one of my cores just by themselves.

if you have x64 version try also to copy msvcp71.dll to X:\Windows\SysWOW64 . I have this file in that folder. BTW. I really don't know why you don't have that file. I had no problems on all machines with Windows 7 x86/x64

Howdy, I have been having issues with ripbot, at first I thought It was my rip but here's what's happening.

using dvdfab (latest) I rip the main movie to the hdd. I add the stream to rip bot etc... when i look at the preview about 45 mins into any movie the audio goes out (by at least 5 sec). I can play the ripped streams on the pc fine and there is no audio lag, I can't put in a delay etc because the first part of the movie is in sysc. This has happened to about three movies so far, eg Shrlock Holmes, Iron man 2, Gamer,

I'm having a problem using RipBot264 to rip some BBC-sourced blurays; specifically those that are:

VC1-interlaced
Frame rate 29.97

Normally I use handbrake, but it depends on ffmpeg to read its input files, and that can't deal with *interlaced* VC1. Hence RipBot.

Now, The BBC create their programming for transmission in the UK at 25fps interlaced (aka 1080i@50), but *some* of the blurays they produce for their programmes are modified to play at 29.97fps. Those that *aren't* and are instead left at 25fps, eg: Life, Wonders of the Solar System, rip beautifully and perfectly in RipBot264 (though I might wish for a HandBrake-like "decomb" filter; I don't want to use a full unconditional deinterlace and halve my vertical resolution). But those that are are giving me problems:

An important example (for me!) is the Doctor Who season 4 specials. The artifact I'm getting is that on smooth-motion shots there's an obvious and almost literally sickening regular judder in the motion.

Here are several files. They're all of the first two minutes of The End of Time Part 1.This is useful because it demonstrates the problem almost right from the start, in the course of the first two shots. This does also occur on a number of other discs; just this one is the most convenient demonstrator.

The largest file, "end of time 2 mins.mkv" is the raw rip out of MakeMKV, truncated to two minutes using MKVMerge. The others are generated from that first using RipBot264, named according to what settings I tried (from a base of using the BluRay preset). None of them helped. :-) The ones where I force the frame-rate to 29.97 are because upon load RipBot264 sometimes seemed confused about what the source frame rate was in the original (non-truncated) makemkv rip. Play any of them. What's noticeable in the first two shots, and unbearable in the second, in the pan-and-track down onto a street, past a brass band, is a regular judder or 'dragging' motion.

Watching the first shot frame-by-frame, (of the Earth against a starfield), on some frames the stars are doubled-up, I believe because two interlaced or telecined frames have been rendered into a single progressive frame.

Now, the actual bluray in an actual bluray player connected to an actual HD TV, plays fine, but I want a playable version in my vault. I'm only running Windows in a VM (by choice I'm a Linux/Mac user) so I can't really test playback of the source file in Windows well enough to be sure, but it looks like in Window Media Player the source shows the same problem as the transcodes I can see properly on other viewers.

My theory so far is that what's happened to these disks is this: The BBC made the programmes, as they make all their programming for broadcast here in the UK, in interlaced 25fps; but in mastering the Blurays, presumably for some international marketing purpose, they're set to play back at 29.97fps. And I think this is accomplished using telecine.

Which on its own would mean, use detelecine, or inverse telecine (correct me if I'm wrong, they're the same thing? HandBrake offers the former, RipBot264 the latter). But in one of the example outputs included above I tried inverse telecine and it seemed not to help.

So I think it wants to be decimated too, to return it to its original 25fps-interlaced state. But the RipBot264 GUI only offers "Do not decimate" or "Restore -> 23.976fps". A note I found somewhere from the author seemed to indicate he thought this was the only situation where it would be needed; ie: 24fps movies telecined for NTSC.

I think, for these disks, we need a "Restore -> 25fps" option.

I'm not sure that really is the cause of the problem, and that this would be the solution, but it's the best I can think of and I welcome input. Best of all a "no, do this" hint. :-)

I also don't know if this would alter the speed of the video (thus putting it out of sync with the sound) or whether the frame lengths would be automagically stretched so it plays at the same speed. But if it fixes the video but leaves it at a different speed to the sound, that at least moves the problem to something that'll probably be easier to fix. :-)

An alternative would be for RipBot264 to be able to output h.264 *interlaced*; ie: preserving the interlaced/telecined fields of the original. In that case I could try running through RipBot264 at a ludicrously high quality setting in order to run the result through HandBrake to sort out the detelecine its way. Yes, I know double-transcoding would be horribly sub-optimal. :-) Another option would be to just use the resulting interlaced transcode as my final viewing file, which might work.

(I've no idea if HandBrake *would* be able to sort this out - I haven't seen the BBC pull this framerate change on any of their blurays that aren't vc1-interlaced and thus could handbrake directly... or if I have, I haven't noticed because it Just Worked. I suspect the former. :-))

I was going to try just setting --interlaced=1 or --tff in the x264 options string in RipBot264, but it seems the option string field in which to enter that has disappeared in the most recent version. :-)

Does anyone know why 1st Pass during 2-Pass target size seems to only use between 25-40% of processing resources? I rip all my movies to blu-ray (.m2ts) in 2-Pass mode every time. When converting to 1080p, I get about 45fps on 1st pass. On 720p, it's usually around 60fps. On 2nd pass, I get around 25fps on 720p and around 18-19fps on 1080p.

This is on an i7 920 OC'ed to 4.0GHz. Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

recorded .ts could be damaged. Probably decoder during decoding droped some frames. Try this. change extension to .m2ts.(This will force remuxing to .mkv by eac3to)

about the a/v sync, i took the .ts file remuxed it to m2ts and did the encode again, file had no a/v sync issue.

for some reason .ts did have sync issue, but m2ts (remuxed from .ts) did not.

when the .ts was loaded in the preview, a/v sync was fine.

I'm trying to encode an iPad-compatible MP4 using the available preset. The video is 1024x576 @ 24fps.
The encoder seems to complete the 1st pass but never get to 2nd. It remains stuck with the Abort button forever.

First pass is really a scan to get a feel for the file. 2nd scan does the full encoding and will use 100% of your CPU no matter how good your computer is.

That's the hardest question for all beginners, zazon.

As many movies are out there, as many different bitrates they "need" to be encoded with a satisfying quality. This is squared by the different people watching movies and having different preferences how much quality they need. And even cubed by the many options you can use to set up the encoding efforts and time consumption, the wanted dimensions (width*height), filtering...

To limit the complexity, first divide your problem into two: Do you really need to get the result down to a file size which fits on a specific media?

If yes, calculate the required bitrate by the capacity of the media, divided by the playing time, and subtract some amount required for anything that is not the video of the movie (audio streams, subtitles, multiplexing overhead, maybe even menus - depending on the target format). There are "bitrate calculators" (maybe included in the convertor, maybe additional ones) to help you here.

If no (e.g. you will store the result on a harddisk anyway) ... don't care about bitrates at all. Only care about the available quality metrics of the encoder. x264 has a kind of "constant quality" mode, more exactly a "constant rate factor" (CRF) ... test for yourself which value in a range around 18 and 22 is satisfying for your quality preferences. Other formats may not have such a feature, here it may be harder to find "a very similar quality for many different movies".

OK, I found suprip and loaded the .sup file. Suprip found the subtitles, but when I output them to the .srt file to be used by rip bot, it just said line 1, line 2, line 3, etc., or made some jibberish. What step did I miss when doing the output? Is there a guide somewhere?

I also tried the CQ setting for the bit rate. Personally I think it looked worse than using a variable bit rate set at 6930, which I what I was doing. I don't know if it was the film or something else and the file size was about the same size anyway. Anyone got a clue here? Thanks for any help.
