Since it is very important to you :) I'd say that the value of 32.323 seconds was arbitrary and it is possible to do other lengths. The cornerstone is the time it takes to 'create' a menu page. 32 seconds takes ~ 4-5 minutes (of acceptable time) on a normal PC. That's why I chose the length.
Also, a regular (mentally heathy) user would decide what to do in 30 seconds. If you're using multiAVCHD's output for commercial or any presentation purposes (not for home use), that's another story.

i don't use it commercial... it were really nice...

Hello Deank,
As I said in the past, I use AVCHD to make end film credits compilation (I'm very found of hi-def multicanal sound of film musics).
Each title I gathered (from 2 to 10 mn depend the film) had reasonnable length "chapters" in multiAVCHD (I had the impression it was dynamic - the less length, the less "Chapters" but maybe it was only an impression)
Anyway, recently after updating, the titles have all 12 (or so, I think) "chapters" wich is quite a lot for titles of the lenth I use...
So is there a possibility for me to desactivate it in the preferences (but I don't where, if it was possible) or somewhere, is there a way to choose the number of "Chapters" we'd like to have (inferior to 12 as for me).
Thanks
deank

You can do it in title PROPERTIES, Chapters, [auto] button.
multiAVCHD will generate as many chapter marks as you set. Since 732+ auto[12] is disabled, so you should get what you want.

Hello Dean! Sorry if this has been posted already, but I've searched the forums and can't find where it is...
I'm trying to convert one MKV movie with 2 internal subs and 1 external srt file. All 3 subs are working ok in the final project, but the problem is that the srt subs doesn't appear for selection in setup menu (just the internal ones insists to appear, and what I want is the 3 subs appearing for selection em setup menu). Is that normal?
I've already tried to "embed" the srt into mkv (with mkvtoolnix). The 3 selectable subs are in setup menu, but the character set doesn't seems to be ok with the srt sub (I'm from Brazil and the special characters like "´" , "~" or "Ç" doesn't seems to be good...)
Thanks in advance!
deank

No, it is not normal to have only the internal to appear. I'll check it later today.
About the non-ansi characters, try to open your srt subtitle file in notepad or Subtitle Workshop and re-save it as ANSI. If your windows is properly configured for non-unicode support it should be ok.

Try to untick the option [-] Convert TrueHD to AC3 in Subtitle&Audio tab. If you want the core of the TrueHD, open "PROPERTIES" for this file and in AUDIO tab select [x] Core only. Then give it a go.
thanks for the help. this does work, but only if i remove all audio tracks except the main one. i tried removing only the other HD tracks (french, spanish,portugese) and leaving the two 2 channel tracks, but the same error shows up, even with 'core' selected (it seems to default select 'core' for those tracks too).
does this sound right, or should i be able to keep a 'directors commentary'-type 2 channel track as well?

In Title #1 properties, the only subs that appear on setup menu (in preview mode) are the MKV "embedded" ones. If I remove all the subs and add a srt (external), none sub appear in setup menu. I've tried with 2 different movies.
Another problem with me is when I set transparency to zero in "Setup Menu Transparency", the option "Subtitles OFF" doesn't appear on Setup menu preview. When I set transparency to default, the option is there.

Can chapters be automatically created from Sony camcorder m2ts files that are joined via the "Join MPG / M*TS..." tab?
The Join creates 3 media files; camdump.264, camdump.txt, and camdump.und.ac3.
The log says "Loading external chapter file: camdump.txt"...;
Then "No thumbnails/chapter links defined!"
Do I need to manually edit the camdump.txt file to define chapter points?
In my test case, the camdump.txt has these entries:
<Chapters>
<EditionEntry>
<ChapterAtom>
<ChapterTimeStart>00:00:00.000</ChapterTimeStart>
<ChapterDisplay>
<ChapterString>Clip 1</ChapterString>
</ChapterDisplay>
</ChapterAtom>
<ChapterAtom>
<ChapterTimeStart>00:00:05.536</ChapterTimeStart>
<ChapterDisplay>
<ChapterString>Clip 2</ChapterString>
</ChapterDisplay>
</ChapterAtom>
</EditionEntry>
</Chapters>

Excellent program, makes my PS3 forget that it also plays games. :thanks:
Question: it is possible the title thumbnail also be in the "trailer-like" style?
Maybe with two random sequence fields (ex: 1 8 2 7 3 6 5 4 for background video; 4 3 8 1 6 2 7 5 for title thumbnail).
Then you can have static background and a trailer-like title thumbnail. I'm posting this because the present "linear" motion title thumbnail not always shows the most recognizable parts.
Anyhow, thanks again and congratulations!
PS: Sorry my bad english.

Hi dean,
I made some tests a few days ago and I have some remarks and suggestions.
PAL players handle 23.976 (1080p)
Yes, but the player switch between 23.976 hz (or 60 hz when 24 hz is unchecked in the player's setup) and 50 hz, and it lasts a few seconds (because of Hdmi re-synchronization), which make sometimes lose the debut of the title.
Thus, a 50hz menu in Pal mode would be useful.
-with audio titles in DTS HD and Dolby True HD, I checked "core only" but it remained in HD (my receiver showed it).
I don't remember if "use eac3to" was checked, that's maybe the explanation.
-also with audio titles : the subtitle track which shows its name is a very good idea, but it lasts 30 seconds. Could that last for the whole song, whatever its duration ?
-will you add the chapter menu for AVCHD strict mode or we have to use build 729 for that feature ?
-for the backround image of the menu, when a non 16/9 image is loaded, it's stretched to 16/9 : could you add an option to center it, thus let it in its native format, adding black bars around it ?
Thanks a lot.;)

You can add your own subtitle track and have the names appear as long as you wish. I'm not a fan of burning pixels on my TV by having a text onscreen for 5-10-20 minutes :)
Background picture: I think users can spend some time preparing the content for authoring. I can't keep adding options for everything.
Chapter/setup pages for [Restricted] mode - I said I'll try to add them. Still working on it.
PAL/NTSC: There is a change in AUTHOR tab. User can now choose between: [PAL] [NTSC] [PAL 24p].
[PAL] will make your BD player stay at 50Hz while displaying the menu (1080i).
[NTSC] and [PAL 24p] will produce 24p menus (1080p).
Also a scale drop-down is available in title properties for <<F and F>> buttons (from 1 frame to 30 mins).

You're, right. Menu is always generated in 24p no matter the TV system selection. Why would you need this to change? PAL players handle 23.976 (1080p) and NTSC love the format.
Is a game of two here, if the TV doesn't support 24Hz it would revert to 60i and the player would output then 60i. This issue is most relevant with LCD than with plasma, logic, now, that plasmas are extinct ;)
Just a side comment

Thanks !
For the subtitle track, as it is interactive, we can remove it (with the subtitle touch on remote) if we are afraid to burn our screen.
I guess that you could let the choice of the duration of this subtitle track (for example, 2 choices : 30 seconds or the whole track), but it's one more option, and as you said, you can't keep adding options for everything, I understand.
But if you can add it later ... ;)
I'm not gonna create my own subtitle track for that, it's not that important.

some days ago, we spoke about a "custom play button" for self made trailers or documentation... because that isn't simple to integrate, i want to play these types of .m2ts in my custom background of some menu pages. that's all, nothing with commercial or presentation ...for me, power point does a good job.
do you change the 32 sec limit in video stream length of custom backgrounds, if i uncheck "motion thumbnails"? - i understand your answer not really... was that a "yes, i will let decide length by custom bg a/v" or a "no, i'm sorry"? ...sorry :)

About 'not reencoding' the background: the same goes as for the welcome screen: you can always use your own videos for any menu page, provided you replace the 8***0.m2ts and 8***0.clpi files for the selected page (where *** is 001 to 252).

Right. The rate is supported, but when switching between framerates, my projector (Panasonic PT-D 7000) makes awwwwwwful things and stays black for about a second... So I was hoping, there would be a different solution.
I already tried replacing files as you notice. But it seems they have to have the same length then, rite?!

A short note about the next update (733). It will require full-download or DAT-update. It is needed because of additions for [AVCHD strict] output mode, which uses pre 730 menu muxing, for compatibility with some Panasonic players. It will support one page of 12 chapters per title (at least for now).
Also, there was this option for page numbering in the old THM menu. It is back, but used for numbering the chapter pages. You'll find the option in "EXTENDED" sub-tab of MENU tab.
http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/multiAVCHD_chapnumber.jpg
It will put x/y information in the right corner of the chapter-thumb box.
deank

You can update now to 733.
[AVCHD strict] output supports 1 chapter page with 12 chapters, menu templates and everything available in the relaxed mode (except setup and title list menus).

The only difference is that clpi/mpls files are not marked as interlaced (because the video is progressive anyway - just like it was before). What player/TV are you using?

Well... the menu is definitely encoded in 25fps.
Good to hear, but I have some Problems in understanding, what it does to a custom background video file.
Every time it comes out with a different duration than the input file. Actually it is being cut 'randomly', even if i check the "use as is" option.
I also did try the way of replacing the 80010.m2ts file with my custom menu. And it seems to come out differently every time...:confused:
Would you consider a 'just pass my background video through without reencoding or sth." option?!
All the best so far!

Did you actually try to burn "Blu-ray" output from multiAVCHD to a DVD disc? I wonder how so many people backup BD discs and it works in their dumb panasonic players?! I'll be damned if it turns out I wasted few days with implementing the 'old' pre 730 menus.
Also simple tests you can perform to help yourself (and me) is to change resolution of the menu files with BDedit to 1080i and see what will happen.

No. I don't need tons of questions everyday because users tweak multiAVCHD's output and then ask "WHAT is going on?" and "Why I get =disc=unrecognized= errors?".

Yes but my Panasonic cannot play BD-5, I have to choose AVCHD strict mode.
I tested the new Pal menu with build 732, just before you spoke about the last update (today at 18:20). But there was already "Pal 24", and I chose Pal, thus it should have worked.
I'm trying to download de last DAT on Rapidshare for hours, but I can't, "the slots are busy, try again later".

I tried compressing a 1280 MKV last night which was just over DVD-R size. It ended up still being too big to write to DVD and I noticed the quality was noticeably worse in some places (used the default 1-pass insane). Are there better settings to correct these two issues?

Turbo profile is better. How big the oversize? With menu or not? With DTS or AC3 audio?

26th February 2010, 10:55
Thanks, it works now, the menu is well in 50 hz ! And the chapters menu also works. ;)
I met some little problems today or recently ;
-with an audio title, which is a 7.1 wav, the duration is set to 3 seconds though its real duration is 15 seconds. So, my player plays it during 3 seconds.
-the "core only" option doesn't work with True HD and DTS HD, even when the sound is in a video, and not only alone as an audio title.
-with some titles (maybe audio titles), the duration is asked, and if the path of this file is too long, I don't see its name in the log, thus I don't know which file it is and I can't put a duration.
-the size estimation is sometimes completely false (3 times the real size of the project).
A few months ago, I made a top menu with several images (one for each title) by page ; I believe there was 3 lines with 2 images on the first and on the third (last) lines and 3 images on the second. I don't find this menu anymore.
What was the name of this kind of menu ? Will it come back ?

It was a tiny fraction over - output came to 4.47gb. Had a menu and 99% sure it was AC3.
So would the turbo profile in theory give me better quality?

There must be some misunderstanding!
Actually i was not tweaking anything.
I was just following your suggestions, and trying to find out, what happens to the custom background video, because it turns out to have a different duration every time I try...
And I didn't mention anything about "disc=unrecognized= errors"
Wouldn't it make sens to just pass through the background video, if it is already in the right format?! There is no need to reencode, right!?

Yes, Insane is for testing, although it is not such a bad profile. Turbo or 1pass is what you need.
New menu size (ver 4.0 menus) are not calculated and may cause oversize. Always allow ~15-20mb per title.

Hello guys, I couldn't find anyone addressing this issue, but it was driving me absolutely crazy for a couple of weeks. Hopefully my post helps someone having similar problems. I was getting a lot of these two errors when encoding menus:
"Failed to extract title thumbnail for title #1."
"Cannot detect file size: (C:\multiAVCHD\_TEMP\multiTEMP-20100220\20100220-015724-MM001.264)"
As per advice in these forums I reinstalled Haali, AviSynt & Dshow multiple times including cleaning the registries, clean installs, different combinations, nothing worked for me. I tried different settings in multiAVCHD itself to no avail. I don't know about you guys but I do not burn my compilations to DVD4 or DVD9, and I keep my video files at approx 7,7 GB so that I could fit 3 movies on one BD-R (25GB). You know what saved me? The m2ts split option set to 0!
As a default in new multiAVCHD this option was set to 4GB and it seems that was the whole problem. Somehow it didn't like to split my files into 4GB chunks. Although switching to 0 got rid of errors and I can now have all menus done correctly, I understand that files bigger than 4GB are not FAT32 compliant. Anyone ever had this problem? Thanks and sorry for my lengthy post.

Here is something you may find interesting. Although it is very experimental it works (here).
When you load multiAVCHD compilation, which contains a menu, a prompt will appear if you want to keep it from re-encoding.
It means that WHEN and IF possible, some menu pages will not be reencoded, saving hours and hours for big compilations. Using the option makes sense only when using more than 5 titles in a compilation.
If you change ANYTHING about a title - in title properties, or REMOVE a title or MOVE a title UP/DOWN in the list, all its 'neighbor' menu pages will be marked for reencoding. Neighbors are 3 titles preceding the changed one and 3 titles after it. I may add an option to override the neighbor re-encoding when adding titles to the end of the compilation. Then the option will make sense even with less than 5 titles, but you won't see the next (newly added) title on the preceding menu page. Scrolling down (in XMB) or right (in Slide/Carousel) will show the page, of course.
For example, if you have a compilation of 30 titles and ADD one at the end, menu pages for titles 1 to 27 will be used as they are and 28 to 30 + the new one will be encoded.
Processing of the thumbnails in HDAVCTN folder is now faster (~10-20 times) and chapter#1 will not be re-extracted when not needed (it was a bug).
Keeping the menu feature may work for builds after 732 (or even 730 if you used default settings for XMB or SLIDE menu and your current menu configuration matches the old compilation)
Give it a try and let me know.
//
A quick comparison with one of my favorite compilations (45GB 11 titles): (all operations performed on an external USB HDD) (created with default XMB settings in build 730RC)
With reencoding the menu (1hr 19mins)
[15:35:43] multiAVCHD finished in 4733 seconds (01:18:53)!
Without reencoding (13 times faster: 6mins)
[20:23:24] multiAVCHD finished in 355.963 seconds (00:05:55.962)!
\\
You will know that a menu page is NOT being re-encoded when you see * Muxing message in the log for chapter and setup pages:
[13:08:47] Preparing menu pages...
[13:08:47] Encoding static XMB menu page [1/4] [Static title thumbnail].

p.s.2 Adding a pop-up menu to existing compilation now takes 3-4 seconds, no matter how many titles are in it (compared to 10-40 seconds before).
p.s.3 Each title will get its menu options saved in the project file from now on (even when not using templates). This will make re-using menu files without reencoding possible for the future builds.

Few important fixes:
* Fixed a bug, which caused multiAVCHD to crash when using hidden titles
* When a hidden title is #1 in the compilation, playback will not return to menu when default playback sequence is [Go to menu] but player will lock/crash - fixed.
* Fixed wrong OID parameter in the project file, when loading existing compilations, containing hidden titles, to be used without re-encoding the untouched menu pages.
* Fixed wrong POSTER parameter in the project file, causing an error when loading a finished project file with custom poster images.
* Fixed processing of .ass files (typo in the code reversed the logic and all successfully processed .ass files were rejected and all the failed ones were accepted :) )
* When asking for audio title duration, multiAVCHD will print the file name (without path) in the log, before the prompt appears
* Fixed processing of thumbnails in HDAVCTN folder when using hidden titles
* Added experimental option (not saved in the .ini) in Menu/Extended tab: [-] Never re-encode unchanged neighbor menu pages. Never = avoid, but sometimes it still may be needed.
I think I fixed some other things, but my programming kit locked this afternoon and I lost everything since 21:30 last night, so I can't remember all the fixes. Still all are there. :)

Me too... :confused:

It is almost ready... When you import a compilation which has HDAVCTN folder, the preview will show the real pictures for titles and chapters, not the boring multiavchd.deanbg.com logo:

And it applies to custom menus, too:

:) much better than before...

You can now update to build 734.

I made a new test by curiosity, always in strict mode because of my Panasonic player : I checked only "add title-list menu", no top menu, and my player cannot play the disc. He tries but can't launch the first title and stops.
As I chose "strict AVCHD mode", I believed it would be like if I hadn't checked "title-list menu" because it is supposed to be ignored.

There must be something else wrong. Title list has nothing to do with it anymore. Your compilation has only one of each m2ts/mpls/clpi files and it can't affect the playback. That is if you use a new file and not some old test folder, which has popup or other stuff from version 4.0. I'll take a look again.

You're right... it is fixed now... There is an invalid playlist reference (which is never executed) in the 1st title in movieobject.bdmv. It seems panasonic does a LOT of checks before going on. :)
