It occurred to me later that the commands are probably W7-specific and I wonder how you were going to deal with that. As an alternative, maybe you should consider just a general capability within mAVCHD that has option: execute any user command at 'start'; execute any user command at 'done' and that would cover alot of needs maybe...
The command is available in XP and in Vista... But the pre/post commands is a good idea.
Btw something new comming later today:
There is a new 'transcoding' option now... You can chose to transcode your videos to Blu-ray MPEG-2 (and not H264/AVC). :)

Dean, what is Blu-ray MPEG-2 ? is the better than H264/AVC ? i never try this reencode.
Thanks

MPEG-2 is what your DVDs are encoded with. :)
Some say it is better, some say it is worse... Blu-ray standard supports AVC/H.264 MPEG-2 and VC-1. I just decided to add MPEG-2 and multiAVCHD will support 2 of 3 available encoding options.

Thanks Dean, i will try this later. I will make a avc and mpeg-2 for one movie, and put this in a projector ae4000, i will see the diferences between avc and mpeg-2.
Thanks Dean.

External .chap.eng.srt should be created only with videos which have chapters stored as meta info... It shouldn't happen with raw video files or when importing external chapter files (.txt). Are you sure that it converts the .txt to .srt?
I stand corrected. External .chap.end.srt is NOT created when I use external chapter files.

I just tested 720x480, 1280x720 and 1920x1080 with Blu-ray MPEG-2 profile... I'd say it looks marvelous :) ... My Playstation3 played the AVCHD structure just fine.
Titles marked for transcoding in MPEG-2 are colored with my favorite royal blue color in media tab.
:)
p.s. Also in royal-blue you'll see two lines in the LOG:
[16:28:25] Executing custom PRE-processing file: [C:\multiAVCHD\multiPRE.cmd]...
[16:41:15] Executing custom POST-processing file: [C:\multiAVCHD\multiPOST.cmd]...
@laserfan: In case multiAVCHD finds these files in its folder it will execute them - multiPRE.cmd after a compilation is started and multiPOST.cmd once all finishes.
It is possible to parse some arguments to these .cmd files, but I don't know what could be useful.

Build 741:
* Added PRE/POST custom script (cmd) execution (multiPRE.cmd_ and multiPOST.cmd_ included in full download with instructions inside)
[multiPRE.cmd_]
@rem Rename this file to multiPRE.cmd
@rem It will be executed once you click [START]
@rem and start a compilation in multiAVCHD
[multiPOST.cmd_]
@rem Rename this file to multiPOST.cmd
@rem It will be executed once multiAVCHD
@rem completes its work (just before the "End of log." message).
* Changed transcode preview :)
* Added [Blu-ray MPEG-2] transcoding profile
I'll appreciate any comments/feedback about HD MPEG-2 transcoding.

Dean,
A message for those with constant problems encoding menus, motion/static, title-list menu...
for me, it was ffdshow that I did not install on the new machine. After using multiAVCHD for a year I forgot it is a prerequisite. It would be good to mention it on the installation.

Hi deank, thanks for the new version w/pre- post-cmds, I will try it soon.

Before I closed this out, I capped the screen cuz I wasn't sure if mAVCHD had written to the log (which it did not afaict):
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/d27f873f644b326cfc25c901f605b7b76g.jpg
After closing, I noticed these in Task Manager:
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/8f2cd09c6302ffd3e8f331011f65e24e5g.jpg
Maybe the open mplayers were at fault? My CPU was still loaded to 100% after closing the mAVCHD dialog. I have 8Gb RAM 64-bit W7 FWIW. Also not sure where exactly the process failed--I did indeed get a good .m2v 720x480 re-coding, and HCenc's log shows it completed normally.
If there's an easy way to resume-and-mux let me know, else I do know how to re-mux using Muxman "manually".
EDIT: Hmm, not sure why my IMG are not showing...? Will keep trying. Ok should work now.

Such thing may happen with overloaded machine... To avoid such things you can [close] the preview of the transcoding or disable [x] Real-time transcode preview in SETTINGS tab. It is a problem with this mplayer app... It hangs and locks the output m2v file. That's why I added the auto-close of the preview but when size-estimation is wrong it is of no help. (I saw both screenshots).
You can reuse the .m2v file + the audio file (if present... if not, you need to create it yourself). Load the m2v file and in title-properties click [alter detected properties] and mark it as (HD)DVD compliant. It won't be transcoded again, but make sure to place it outside the temp folder.
Sadly in such cases pull-down is probably is not applied to the m2v file and you may need to do it manually with dgpulldown.
I'll try to tweak mplayer's parameters/calls... I sometimes get the same error, but not too often to take deep look into it.
Of course you can just use muxman or another app with the ready m2v file, too.

For those of you wondering about the new MPEG-2 output for BDMV, it's not "better". Technically, MPEG2 is a less advanced codec than MPEG4/AVC. It was introduced back in the days of DVD and is technically "old".
Deank added support for MPEG2 output via BDMV because it is technically part of the spec, he already had MPEG2 encoders for SD-DVD output, and there is no problem in being thorough.
Just because you can use MPEG2 doesn't mean you will get magically "better" output. In fact, chances are you will get slightly less quality than using MPEG4. However, MPEG2 may provide better compatibility across several devices.
Deank, thanks again for coding this awesome application. I should be able to continue to test it when I get home tonight, and I will report back about my efforts to create SD-DVD output from a Blu-ray. Please feel free to add/comment on/correct any of my above statements.

And make sure to update to 741! Just to be safe use multiUPDATE.exe... I added some code to kill mplayer while doing excessive tries to generate the preview :)
About MPEG-2: Adub is right, although in some cases it may produce better/comparable results to AVC... Still it is good to have more choices. :)

Sorry about the first post guys. You can delete it as I am a dumb ass and didn't see this thread!!!
I am using MultiAVCHD to make a compilation BD-R of recorded WWII footage and have followed the online tutorial but I cannot get it to play on my Blu Ray Player.
Here are my steps.
1. Start MultiAVCHD
2. Click on AVCDH/BDMV/DVD Folders Tab and add 10 .mkv files.
3. Author Tab has Stricter AVCDH Folder Format Ticked (Also tried unticked).
4. Everything else left as default.
5. Click Start
6. Let it build the folders BDMV, CERTIFICATE, HDAVCTN & files details.txt, multiAVCHD.log, multiAVCHD.mpf.
7. Burn all folders and files with IMGBURN
8. Put BD-R in BD Player and looks like it is going to play but then just stops with a blank screen.
Have I missed something here? My BD Player is a Panason DMP-BD35

Hmmm...This may be your problem. You don't need all of these folders to be Blu-ray compatible. In fact, you only need BDMV and CERTIFICATE.
Try burning JUST those two folders, and see what happens. The player may be choking on these extra files (some do, some don't).

Hi !
I've encoutered a problem with chapters.
I have some mkv that already have a chapter track : uncropmkv (if necessary) + tsmuxer (or multiavchd) + imgburn (2.5) and it works : i can access to the chapters with >>|
Some of my mkvs have no default chapter track.
I try bluray in tsmuxer with insert or custom chapters (in bluray tab) + AVCHD-patcher : the dvd plays but stop when i use >>|
Have you got any idea to create an available chapter track and use in multiAVCHD ?
thanks

I tried another HD-to-DVD conversion and it worked, except I have to try again as it missed the subs (maybe needed the hardsubbing selection?)
Also, HOW does one "select a title for processing" in this way? Regardless of what I do, after I click SD DVD I always see a dialog "No titles set for DVD processing! Process all (x) as DVD?". How to "set" for processing?
Further, if I click "No" to the above, mAVCHD seems to go ahead and process anyway and I have to abort if it is processing all titles when I wanted just one.

Transcoding of a title depends on what you set in Title properties -> [TRANSCODE]
If you didn't make a choice, once you click [START] and select authoring format you're given the last chance to select what you want as a final result. For example - you loaded a Blu-ray playlist and click SD-DVD - then multiAVCHD will auto set transcode options and will reencode the playlist. Always make your mind before you click something in the output-selection window (after you click [START]). I can't add 10 "Are you sure?" prompts.
In case you wish to transcode - always 'visit' the [transcode] window. There is a button in MEDIA tab.
Supported subtitles for SD-DVD are external + internal (mkv). If you import BD/HD-DVD/AVCHD structure you need to import subtitles manually as external tracks.

@deank,
I'm already working on a guide for some of multiAVCHD's functionality (mostly HD->DVD) right now.
However, over time, I will continue to push out guides for extended multiAVCHD use.
Is there something in particular that you would like me to cover?
deank
26th March 2010, 00:55
Nothing in particular... but mostly:
* Read button labels
* Hover with the mouse over an option and read what it is supposed to do.
:)
I already posted about all the things I can think of few posts up. multiAVCHD does a lot of things so it is not possible to cover it in one guide anyway.
Thank you for taking time to create some useful tutorials... ATM there are NONE that I read so far that make any sense or are of any help.

Thanks for the reply, dean, but it doesn't work. If I untick this options, it will create only a title list menu. I want the XMB menu, but without the buttons (and with the selectable thumbs).
If I can remember well, in earlier versions (3.0) this was possible.

deank,
Quick question. Does the output "TV System" under the General section of the Author tab have any affect when dealing with HD to SD-DVD conversions?
Edit: Question number 2!: What would you recommend for a user to do when converting to from HD to SD-DVD when the main movie is split up over multiple files?
(ex: 01.m2ts and 02.m2ts contain the main movie)
Should I load up the sources using the "AVCHD / BDMV / DVD folders" import, or is there an even easier way of doing it without having to remove all of the unnecessary playlists after import?

Hi!What would you recommend for a user to do when converting to from HD to SD-DVD when the main movie is split up over multiple files?

Yeah, I thought about that, but I wondered if there was a way to do it purely in multiAVCHD. The reason is that I'm writing up a tutorial on encoding Blu-ray material to DVD and I want the reader to be able to handle pretty much any content through the main program.
If there is not an easy way, then oh well.
In addition, I know that this splitting happens a lot with HD-DVD's, which I'm not sure if tsmuxer can handle. I do know that multiAVCHD handles HD-DVD's so I was wondering if it was possible to automatically join main movie files.

deank,
Quick question.
1) TV system setting defines the framerate and the resolution for the transcoding. With PAL you'll get 720x576@25fps and with NTSC you'll get 720x480@23.976.
2) You can load the playlist (.mpls file) for the movie in multiAVCHD just like you do it in tsMuxeR.

Update on my problem!
Strangest thing is I used the Create AVCHD Stricter mode and NOT any Blu Ray Player and burned the files and hey presto all is fine! Happy Days, I just wish I didin't have 10 coasters sitting around here. wrap em up for chrimbo prezzies I think!

Dean, I have another problem: I'm trying to convert a PAL video (MKV) with external SRT subs to play on my NTSC PS3. Here my results:
- Select NTSC in Author Tab (Tv System): MAVCHD keeps warning me that the video is PAL and after conversion, DVD doesn't works on my PS3;
- Select PAL 24 in Author Tab (TV System): The conversion works, DVD play on PS3, but only menu works, and when a try to play the video or select a chapter, goes back to top menu;
- Select PAL in Author Tab (TV System): conversion works, but doesn't play on my PS3;
And if I change the FPS in video properties (Alter Detected Properties button), the subs keeps out of sync.
Just to remember, on my PC, DVD works well with PowerDVD 9 (using PAL24).
How do I proceed?

If you get it to play in your PS3 then re-sync the subtitles using SubtitleWorkshop.

Few new things in the latest 741+ update:
* Fixed: Hard-burning subtitles during transcoding didn't work with external VOBSUB (sub+idx) subtitles. Now all ok.
* Added: If you import .m2v file for SD-DVD processing and mark it as [x] SD Compliant, multiAVCHD will still check it if it is 29.97. If not it will apply pull-down to get it to 29.970 fps
* Added: Something I wanted to do for long time now:
In title properties / Audio tab / [add] external audio button will allow you to add VIDEO files, too. multiAVCHD will try to use all audio tracks from: AVI, MKV, M2TS/MTS, TS, MPEG/MPG. The functionality is similar to tsMuxeR ability to add streams from different files/containers.
* Added: in case of SD-DVD mux failure, muxman log will be printed in the LOG box.

If you want to do some tests, set [CUT END] in title properties to 300 (seconds). That way you'll know if it will work, without waiting few more hours.
You can also reuse the .m2v if you wish and add the audio from the m2ts file of the bluray (if it is non-branched).
