Quick update for build 706+

* New option (in Settings tab):

[x] Use FFms2 instead of Directshow

The option is available if you have ffms2.dll in your tools folder. Download of the dll is available here (http://rapidshare.com/files/288117724/ffms2.exe) (2MB) as a self-extractable 7z - extract it in your multiAVCHD tools folder (it is also included in the full-download)

Using this option will make multiAVCHD use ffmpeg/ffms2 for preview in title properties, transcode window and for transcoding.

When FFms2 is used, avisynth will bypass your installed codecs/codec-packs/directshow-filters. It means that even if you don't have proper codecs installed (or no codecs at all) - transcode/preview should still work. Basically you need only avisynth (and may be haali splitter for mpeg-ts/ps files) - nothing else.

The only downsize of using it is that it requires one-time full-reindexing of the input file (usually when you open title properties). It may take up to 2-3 minutes, depending on the duration/size of your video file.

The option is mostly for those of you, who want to transcode various video files, but don't want to install codecs on their systems, or in cases when Directshow decoding doesn't work for some reason. It also means that multiAVCHD requires nothing but avisynth installed to properly work and transcode files.

The easiest way is to find .SRT subtitles that match your video or try to convert VOBSUB to .SUP with BDsup2sub. You can use the compilation you created without reencoding and wasting time. Just load it and set everything in Title properties.

Giving it another try so it seems neither multiAVCHD or mkv2vob can convert a DVD .sub for use in an AVCHD? I extracted .sub with avidemux but BDsup2sub won't open it and if I try to convert to .srt with the avidemux tool, it stops on each individual subtitle, kind stuck :-(

DVD subtitles should come in a pair: SUB+IDX. I don't know what avidemux does, but you need to extract them with a tool that can properly handle VOBSUB/DVDSUB subtitles.

multiAVCHD uses mencoder for that task and I processed numerous DVDs - everytime all worked just fine.

webvan

Yes actually it works now, but here's the thing, multiAVCHD can apparently only process them if you redo the AVCHD. The first time it extracts the .idx + .sub but doesn't add them in the AVCHD, the second time it automatically selects them in "external subtitles" and uses them for the AVCHD. Might be missing something but I did it several times to double-check.

Also it seems "advanced processing..." needs to be enabled in "Subtitles and Audio" it wasn't by default.

Have you also experienced that problem when converting a DVD to AVCHD with the subtitles only making it if they are selected in "external subtitles" ? Or is there a setting I'm missing to have those selected in "subtitles" to be properly ripped/converted in the AVCHD ? Thanks !

deank
7th October 2009, 09:41
No, they usually get extracted from the DVD, processed with bdsup2sub and then added to the AVCHD compilation.

I'll give it a try a bit later.

Thanks, I might be doing something wrong, in my attempts they were selectable in the list of subtitles on the AVCHD but they don't appear on the screen.

I gave it a try with a DVD disc and everything is just fine. Subtitles are shown in "Subtitles" tab (not in External subtitles)
Thanks for checking, but did you play the AVCHF with PowerDVD or in the PS3 to make sure that the subtitles were actually displayed? I also see them in the "subtitles" tab in the title properties and they seem to get processed ok, they can be selected, but they don't appear in the bottom of the screen when I play the AVCHD.

Yes, they appear just fine. About your comment that on the second attempt they are included as 'external' - I can't see how this can happen, because multiAVCHD extracts subtitles/audio/video to the TEMP folder and later removes the tracks. Probably you have something else in your VIDEO_TS folder - I can't know for sure.

Please next time post your complete LOG as I did so we can find what is wrong.

Ok, will do it again tonight and will post the log.

They appeared in "external subtitles" when I started from an mkv, not from a DVD indeed, I don't know why, but that's how I got the idea to rip them with another program and add them manually in "external subtitles".

I think the problem is that the original subtitles are in 720x576 and you're transcoding + resizing to 1280x720. I'll fix this, but:

1) Try to transcode without resizing to 1280x720
2) Use a bit higher bitrate (~1000-1500)

You're gaining nothing with the upscale, but in fact may loose quality with such low bitrate.

I don't know how your question is related to multiAVCHD. The simple answer is that you can't have both original menu and new subtitles.

Build 707:

* [x] Use 64 bit version of x264 encoder option in Settings tab. It will be available if you have x264_64bit.exe in tools folder (it is included in the last full download).

* [x] Use drop shadow (THM) option in Menu tab - affects "Thumbnail menu"

* Fix for DVD subtitle processing when transcoding a DVD title with resize or framerate conversion options. Subtitles are now properly processed to match the new resolution/fps.

Thanks, will try it ASAP!

Maybe there's a better way to do this, but I thought you had to resize to 1280x720 for it to play correctly as an AVCHD, at least in the PS3 ?

deank
10th October 2009, 14:03
No - the best way is to leave it as is (original resolution). It will work EVEN without transcoding (but the size will be bigger) and it will take just few minutes to process the whole DVD without converting MPEG-2 to H.264/AVC.

webvan
10th October 2009, 14:12
Ah ok, that's good news, but thinking about the reason I was transcoding to mp4 was to reduce the size of the DVD without losing too much (if at all?) quality. If I'm going to transcode, would it make more sense to transcode to 720x576 ?

deank
10th October 2009, 14:14
Yes, it will be much better not to resize it - leave it to 720x576. PS3 will do the upscale much better and you can get a really good quality with lower bitrate. Give it a try with bitrate of 1500kbps and profile "turbo". In fact (at least my PS3) there will be no upscale but PS3 will output 576p signal to the TV and no internal upscaling is done.

webvan
10th October 2009, 14:30
Ok, will try that.

In the meantime my AVCHD with 1280x720 resize now has subtitles with build 707, good work !

webvan
10th October 2009, 15:05
So tried with 720x576/turbo and at the same bitrate (900kbps) the quality isn't as good in PowerDVD9 than the 1280x720 version, it's blockier. Will play them on my PS3 to see if it's different. Will use USB sticks as renaming on an HD is not very convenient and slower.

deank
10th October 2009, 15:10
It is blockier :) because PDVD upscales it and your monitor is probably at least 1280x768. Just give it a try in your PS3 - it will look just fine.

I don't know how your question is related to multiAVCHD. The simple answer is that you can't have both original menu and new subtitles.

And in the future, can you do something to have both of these ? I succeeded on having a fully functional menu and a new subtitle, but the bluray disk had only one big m2ts for the movie. I succeeded with something else, not multiavchd.

deank
10th October 2009, 16:39
There were some additional changes in Menu tab:

http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/multiavchd_menu.jpg

Trying to make room for the new options, you now have XMB separated from other menu styles, because there are a lot of options available only for XMB.

Also two new checkboxes are added for XMB: 'Do not trim title names' and 'Do not show title names'. The later is an addition to 'do not show title thumbnails' so you now can have XMB with title names only (no extended info and no thumbnails) - much like a scrollable classic menu with or without chapters.

Back after playing the AVCHDs in my PS3 and the 1280x720 is less blocky than the 720x576, maybe because my TV doesn't do a good job at upscaling and it doesn't show the resolution of the input, but you did say the PS3 didn't upsale AVCHDs.

Having said that the quality of the 1280x720 is not very good anyway, pretty far from the DVD, I suppose the 900kbps bitrate isn't good enough, will try the 1500kbps you suggested.

deank
10th October 2009, 16:53
Yes, Insane profile is not good for DVD/upscaling. Use either '1 pass' or '1 pass fast/turbo'... and with 1280x720 bitrate of 1500 is not good enough (it is ok for 720x576)... Use at least 3000-4000 for 1280x720.

What you accomplished is a rare case and it is not that easy to implement in a program. If you succeeded - then just try to follow the steps you took. It will work sometimes.

The [x] option to use the 64 bit version of x264 is greyed out and I just downloaded the full package to be sure and it's still greyed out. I'm using windows 7 64 bit RTM. with a quad-core cpu.

There are two x264.exe's in the folder...one's mx264 and the other is just x264, they are different sizes, so I'm assuming the larger (mx264) is the 64 bit version.

You assume wrong. mx264.exe is 32bit and used for menu creation. Did you actually read my previous posts?

Sorry, wondered what the "m" was for :D.

Then that means the 64 bit isn't in the latest download listed on the multiAVCHD website link. That where I got the latest download link from.

Hi deank,
I hope you could help me with this one:
I am using a Panasonic SD-5 for a year now and for lack of processing power I never got to edit the footage. Just recently I got a new macbook pro and iMovie is fine for my AVCHD needs. Unfortunately, some of my archived files are naked .MTS files (without the original folder structure) - iMovie cannot identify those files. Enters multiAVCHD - After I searched all over the web I found your wonderful app and it seems to do the magic of authoring the files back to their original format.
THE PROBLEM is that everything looks stretched somehow, more than 16:9 (everybody look fat...). I tried checking the "keep 16:9 aspect ration" but no good.
Any suggestions?

It's there now...It's not in the link from your website or it wasn't...but the links from the first page of this thread has the correct link and now I have the option. :)

Help me! please ...

When I click the button " Start " I obtain the following error message: " (RT) failure to write in file (c:\ProgramFiles\multiAVCHD\cleannow.cmd) (File access denied) - Line 4456. "
even in the simplest case of a compilation of a single file .MTS, about is the mode selected (Panasonic blu-ray players, AVCHD compatible players, ...)

I cannot use any more this software and I do not see what I can make.

Thank you in advance for your remarks.

I think you're the same guy that emailed me:

2009/10/14 Dean Kasabow:

It is related probably to your security/antivirus program. There were some user reports that Kaspersky denies access of multiAVCHD to its own folder.

Thanks you very much,
Indeed after deleting the report of Kaspersky, the bug disappeared. So I will convert my first file.

Thank you Dean for your answer.
With another software I also had a problem with Kapersky but I think of having found the solution.
I used the software 'InstalledCodec" which indicated me an error on one of my codecs, the codec "PICVideo 3M-JMeg Vfw Codec". After disabled it, multi AVCHD began working. I go still tested but I think that it is the origin of the problem.

One again, thank you for your answer and for your excellent software.

Cordialement.

Build 708:

2 options in Menu tab / XMB :

[x] Do not show language IDs
[x] Expand language IDs

1 option in "Subtitles & Audio" tab

Set undetected audio and subtitle language IDs to: [und]

***

First two options are for XMB menu only. In previous versions you would only see: Audio: DTS 6ch or Subtitles: 2 tracks. With these new options you can configure XMB to show:

(if "expand LID" option is used)
Audio: English (DTS 6ch), French (AC3 6ch)
Subtitles: 2 tracks (English, French)

(if "expand LID" option is NOT used)
Audio: Eng (DTS 6ch), Fra (AC3 6ch)
Subtitles: 2 tracks (Eng, Fra)

The last option will force multiAVCHD to use the entered language id (default is und) if subtitles or audio tracks do not contain language information.

A late addition to build 708:

Option to PAUSE/RESUME encoding/muxing and to change process priority while transcoding:

http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/multiavchd_enc.jpg

You need full download or process.exe (http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/process.exe) in tools folder.

Can you upload one of your bare MTS files (a small sample) so I can take a look? (you can use rapidshare if the file is <200mb)

A quick update for build 708(+):

* Changed the way x264_64bit.exe is called. It may fix the problem in 64bit OS, using 64bit version of x264 included in tools folder.

* New option in Menu tab for Thumbnail menu (THM): [x] Do not show page numbers (THM)

* Fix for Viera SDHC SD_VIDEO output - there was a bug, when imported MPEG/VOB files have no audio

Build 709:

Two new options in "Settings" tab:

[x] Auto set transcode for non-compliant titles
[-] Discard settings from project files (mpf)

*****

First option will make multiAVCHD auto-set proper uncrop/transcode parameters for files/titles with non-compliant resolution, codec or ref-frames - it will do it on file load.

Second option will make multiAVCHD discard project settings when you import an old compilation - it will not overwrite your current multiAVCHD settings (like fonts, texts, checkboxes, etc...)

Do you write the output to DVD disc? Because if you do so, it is most probably the high bitrate, that causes your troubles.
