here's what i do step-by-step:

-add video only x264 mkv 1080i 29.97fps

For HD-DVD you'll need your video 1920x1080p@23.976. Pulldown will be applied during muxing.

Dean, sorry for bother you, but can you answer this?

I'll add an option soon. Few builds ago there was no audio for these pages but someone asked and I added it.

also couple of questions:
-is 1080p only hd dvd spec limitatation, or program's? i thought 1080i was allowed for hd-dvd
-why does it to transcode 2 channel ac3 track, i disabled all audio conversion. is 2 channel ac3 also not compliant?

thanks very much

Why don't you just try to make all in multiAVCHD?

1080p23.976 + AC3 is a limitation of hddvdmux. Audio is always reencoded to AC3 (even if it is already AC3).

You need to do it all in multiAVCHD to ensure proper AVC/H.264 stream. I don't know what version of x264 you used nor the settings in meGUI.

i initially wanted to use Multiavchd for video encoding, but i still fail to understand how the x264/mpeg2 settings work here, by default it offers 4000Kbs bitrate, say, for Blu-ray which is way too low, it also allows to set bitrate as high as 99999 and start encoding afterwards, but that's non-compliant, right? how do i get it to encode at best quality and at the same time within the max bitrate allowed by the chosen standard BD,AVCHD,SD/HD DVD?

also i want to keep my audios intact, encoded elsewhere, and only muxed into the compilation. is it possible? or, if not, how do i control choice of encoder and encoder's settings?

deank
29th April 2010, 15:54
If burning to DVD the max bitrate should be ~14000 for BD/AVCHD and max 40000 if burning to BD-R/RE. For SDDVD - 8000, for HDDVD 8000-10000.

If you wish to use your original audio - use hddvdmux directly from the command line, feeding it with the raw .264 + .ac3 files.

//

The latest small update restricts transcode options: b-frames: 1-3 (4 removed), vbv buffer is properly set to the max (30000) blu-ray output.

Vincent Vega
29th April 2010, 16:18
ok thank you, i'll try that.

so for hd-dvd: i uncheck Delete temporary files, encode to x264 in Multiavchd, find it in _Temp, hddvdmux with my audios and subs from commandline, correct?

also, ref 4, bframe 3, level 4.1, as i understand, are acceptable for all the formats (BD,AVCHD,HDDVD), and 2 pass VHQ is the best quality, right?

why is bframe 4 setting available, where can it be used?

deank
29th April 2010, 16:26
bframes 4 was just removed and for hddvd multiAVCHD will alter the selected options to a different keyint/ref/bframes.

I'd suggest that you first do a short test with quicker options (me personally never use 2pass vhq...) and check the result. You can use 1pass or 1pass turbo for hddvd and check the quality. bframes are set to 2 for hddvd.

Vincent Vega
29th April 2010, 17:33
Dean, something else i don't understand. what's the relation between bitrate (40000) and vbv-maxrate (24000), for BD-R for example?

also after indexing resulting encode with dgavcindex i see bitrate overshoots up to 46322, is that ok?

i have one more question:

how do i make an anamorphic avchd? do i feed it 1920x1080 or 1440x1080 script? and what settings do i make under Transcode?

if i give it 1440x1080 x264, choose Resize 1920x1080, and Do not transcode, it works fine and sets sar to 4:3.

but if i give it 1440x1080 script, choose resize 1920x1080, and Transcode, it encodes to 1920x1080, sar 1:1, not what i want.

deank
30th April 2010, 11:22
You leave it to "1440x1080". It will produce 16:9 anamorphic with sar 4:3.

The latest 748+ build includes few very important fixes and additions for all AVCHD authoring modes (all 8 buttons after you click [start], except [For all Blu-ray players], [HD-DVD] and [SD-DVD]).

* Fixed inaccurate length value of the UIAppInfoAVCHD extension data block (PLEX) in playlist files, introduced with PlayListMarkExt data block (scene/chapter support for SDHC)
* Added new extension data block MakersPrivateData in playlist files to ensure full compliance with AVCHD requirements
* Added IISVPL virtual playlist folder with VPL/vpls user virtual playlist files
* AVCHDTN and IISVPL are kept in each VOLUME after a volume split

* HDAVCTN folder is removed if empty
* HDAVCTN folder should contain title/scene thumbnail database, similar to the one in AVCHDTN folder for compliance with BD-ROM recorders (recording directly to BD-R media). I'll add the database in one of the next builds. Not too many people out there using such recorders yet. :) (may be some in Japan but not in US/EUR region)

With these additions after almost 750 builds the 100% AVCHD authoring compliance is now finally achieved in multiAVCHD (provided you use compliant source video and audio streams)

hi Dean,

i just tried to do a vc-1 blu-ray with stream preencoded with wmv9 AP in wmencoder. i get this error in the log:

Possible tsMuxeR failure to process your input file (E:\--\Test Sample Series_BD_1920x1080i_WVC1.wmv)

is there a workaround for this? should i use some other app to create m2ts with vc-1, then feed it to multiavchd?

Assuming you bought the version that supports AVCHD, the menu's should work automatically. Simply use the "Load from harddrive" option when choosing your source. Sometimes dragging and dropping the BDMV folder onto the main window works as well. I don't own PowerDVD so I couldn't tell you much more than that.

Power DVD no longer recognizes folders from hard drives for playback "As BluRay disc" (hasn't since v.8.xxx)

yep, that works with 1440x1080 script to be encoded to x264.

but does not seem to work with 1440x1080 vc1-in-m2ts as input (with "Do not transcode" setting). i tried all kinds:
1440x1080 (no change)
1440x1080
1440x1080 (4:3)

specs i think allow anamorphic for both these codecs.

could you fix this please?

A quick note about Viera/Panasonic SDHC authoring modes:

Since the scenes/chapters are already available I decided to make it a bit user-friendly, so now your SDHC card will show your movies title names (and not multiAVCHD) and then each scene/chapter will display its start time (HH:MM:SS) - much more useful:

http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/multiAVCHD_viera_MP_1.jpg

http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/multiAVCHD_viera_MP_2.jpg

Also something very interesting: Since the AVCHD compliance is already achieved it turned out that all SDHC output modes:

Playstation 3
Panasonic SDHC
TV/Cam

are compatible with each other. In other words I created a compilation for Playstation 3 with menus and stuff and copied it to a SDHC and the Viera TV played it (without the menus of course). Of course your compilation needs to have all titles in the proper framerate (25fps for PAL or 23.976 for NTSC).

Do these Viera TVs not really handle all of the HD standards? It is really shortsighted if these sets in the U.S. do not handle 1080i25, or sets overseas not handling 1080i29.97.

@Dean:

Can multiAVCHD be run via the commandline?

I pretty much do all of my H264 work via sophisticated cygwin Z-shell scripts. I now have the script set up (under test) to create filename.264 output that is AVCHD compliant (based on the options used to create the excellent AVCHD x264 demo DVD). I'm currently testing to see that I have all of the options correct. In any event, once they are, I'll be creating 1080p23.976 H.264 files from 1080i29.97 2:3 source material or 720p23.976 from 720p59.94 2:3 source material. But will have a separate AC3 file. I'll have to update the script to take DVB-S/S2 sources that only have MP2 audio tracks and create an AC3 2.0 track. I use the eac3to tool for that.

In any event, I'd like to be able to supply command line options to multiAVCHD to create consistant AVCHD files, or must I use the GUI to create the menus?

Chapter location text file will be created manually.

The European models handle all framerates, but NOT when playing back AVCHD from a SDHC card. It is a very restricted mode and the set will play only 25/50 sources and the us models only 30/60 sources.

About command line usage of multiAVCHD - you can't do that. You can start it with parameter - a project file and it will load it but that's it.

Major version change: Version 4.1 build 750 (4.1.750).

* Requires full-download (http://download.videohelp.com/deanbg/multiAVCHD_4.1.exe) (mirror) (http://multiAVCHD.deanBG.com/download/) or DAT update (http://download.videohelp.com/deanbg/multiAVCHD-DAT.exe).

Version change is needed to indicate AVCHD standard compliance for disc and solid-state-media authoring modes (DVD/BD/USB/SDHC/MMC/MS).

* Added: [x] Shutdown when finished option in SETTINGS tab. User can use the option while multiAVCHD is working if one forgot to tick it in the output selection window. (req'd)

* Added: [x] Use background audio for main menu only option. Setup and Chapter menu pages will get no audio. (req'd)

* Added: Proper thumbnail database in AVCHDTN folder even when no thumbnails are extracted.

* Added: Scene/Chapter thumbnails for all AVCHD modes.

* Added: Scene/Chapter names as chapter-time in playlist files for AVCHD authoring modes.

* Achieved: Full compatibility between all AVCHD output modes (framerate restrictions may apply for TV/Cam players)

***

* textST, readSUP and splitMKV command-line-tools (CLI) are updated to show simple pop-up box when started without parameters (in full-download).

It doesn't recognizes compatible AVCHD folders since 10.X versions. Older versions will work fine (I'm under 9.X)

How to run with PowerDVD, I have PowerDVD 9 but nothing MENU from MultiAVCHD appears in PowerDVD, how to do PowerDVD show me ACVHD Menus?

You must open the software, then click "CTRL+O" to open the "Select Source" menu, then go to "Folder", and finally open your AVCHD compatible folder. All menus will work.

I suggest TotalMedia Theater: it's simply the best soft that works with this type of media.

The European models handle all framerates, but NOT when playing back AVCHD from a SDHC card. It is a very restricted mode and the set will play only 25/50 sources and the us models only 30/60 sources.

Ok... I spend the good part of the day trying to prove myself wrong. There is this 1 byte (a bit actually) in the extended part of the extension data block of each .clpi/.CPI file which affects the playback by defiing the horizontal resolution of an AVCHD clip (something not available in Blu-ray standard). Any mismatch between m2ts properties, mpls settings and clpi information causes AVCHD players to reject the input with 'incompatible format' error message.

So now (after setting this byte) I'm able to play 1920x1080p@23.976 in my (PAL) Viera TV without any 23.976->25.000 speed-up (keeping the source 100% unchanged).

Until now multiAVCHD would force AVCHD clip/playlist properties to 1440x1080 (25/30fps) (for TV/Cam and Panasonic SDHC modes), but with the proper option applied, 1280x720 and 1920x1080 resolutions are properly detected and set.

I hope that the NTSC versions will be able to do the same with 25fps sources, but I'll know soon when I get feedback from users with such sets once I update multiAVCHD.

It will be the latest addition to build 750 to get all straightened up. If I had access to an AVCHD player (different that the super-forgiving PS3) an year ago I would've done it last summer, not now :)

:) Dean

Is the tutorial web page available as a PDF? I like to have a printed copy when working with software like this.

I tried printing the page, but it failed horribly. The on-screen text color/background combination results in very light grey text on a white background. The death is that it printed a few pages and then lost it while trying to deal with the images.

Hi deank,

I just wanted to say thanks for such a great program! I do have a question though (and it's probably something simple that I'm doing wrong)........I never had a problem with it in Build 746 (I think) but since updating to 747 and beyond I'm having problems with getting just a blank screen as the menu screen when I play my burnt disc in my PS3. I normally use a static image with some background music on the XMB style menu. I add my media as normal, create motion thumbnails, when I preview it all it's fine but after I've created the compilation and burnt to a DVD+R DL I just get a blank menu screen on my PS3 during playback. I can actually start the videos and skip through the titles etc, so all the media is watchable, it's just the playback of the menu screen thats a problem.....and this was never a problem for me back in build 746 or earlier. The latest disc I created actually showed the menu screen on first load up, BUT if I pressed the button to move down to the next file the screen just goes blank again!

Is this something simple I'm just missing when creating the compilation? I'm using a PS3 connected via HDMI to a 46" Sony X series TV (dunno if you would need this info...but thought better to give u as much info as poss).

Thanks again for this great program and hopefully you can point me in the right direction as to where I'm going wrong!

I don't know what could be wrong. I test each build in my PS3 and the menu shows properly in 1080i50 and 1080p24.

Download the full package with version 4.1 and make sure you set the proper options in AUTHOR tab and also check your PS3/TV Display/Video settings for 24Hz.

Try a complete full-download. It may be related to x264 version or something... Can you play 8001*.m2ts files with a PC player (like MPC)?

Is your PS3 PAL or NTSC version?

What is the latest firmware you installed? Did you update your PS3 to the latest 3.30+? Build 746 was published almost one month... A lot of things may have changed.

Sorry if this is a repeat question but I am trying to play the multiAVCHD authored/re-authored BD backup via external USB drive on a playstation 3 - but PS3 keeps complaining "no titles" but I am able to display "details" and play individual m2ts files.

Is there a specific dir structure to keep on the drive for it to recognize it as a 'title' and playback with menus? Thanks in advance.

You can't see menus from hard-disk. You need to burn it to disc for the menus to display.

Umm.....you might be mistaken? If it needs to be burned to a bluray disk, why bother re-authoring/splitting them to 4GB pieces? something is a miss?

No, I am not mistaken. Displaying menus from hard-disk is impossible because the firmware does not support it. It is a license thing. If it was to add this option, then the cost for a PS3 would have gone up. And that split thing is for FAT32 system. FAT32 does not support individual files bigger than 4 GB.

The tutorial is totally outdated (build 600 I think) and will probably not help you at all.

So, what does a nub read to learn about the program and how to use it?

So, as far as re-authoring for PS3 goes, all one needs is a m2ts splitter? multiavchd does nothing else for PS3?

If thats the case, sorry I misunderstood.

@sreemv: You need to have the structure as X:\AVCHD\BDMV\INDEX.BDM where X: is you USB HDD. Then your PS3 will play the reauthored disc as the original with all features as the BD title.

@crl2007: You're wrong. PS3 plays AVCHD/Bluray from USB/SDHC/MemoryStick complete with menus, DTS audio, VC1 video etc... no need to burn to DVD or BD-R. That's the main idea for the reauthoring and the [SONY Playstation 3] button. You drag your original BDMV folder (from the ripped disc) and click [Playstation 3]. Then multiAVCHD transfers the original, splits the larger files to 4GB chunks, rewrites the playlists and clpi files and you get all set. I already did it few times with Ghost Rider and Cruel Intentions Blu-ray titles.

@MrVideo: Sadly I had no time to update the guide... There were so many changes for the last months that I need to rewrite it completely.

Can you play 8001*.m2ts files with a PC player (like MPC)?
btw, i am NOT able to play those (tried 750build).. is it normal?

thanks for a great app, just stated usin' it(i've heard of it.. a long time ago and kept in mind,... tho my friend gave me his ps3 a year ago :) )
what i have in mind: is it possible to read embeded-fonts from MKV to render specially styled ASS/SSA subtitles?
or should i use some kind of external app to make "prettySUP"?

just tried one title yesterday and it had spec-styled ASS subs for some strange non-existing language on some kind of "blue-faraway-planet-with-expensive-minerals"..
and i ended with totally not displaying subs (i've muxed only Forced Styles ASS subs) :(
day ago i've been doin some other title with previous 4.0 build and it made nice subs from embeded srt.

ADDED: one other question: i've got 720p23... level 4.1 DXVA h264 video with ref 8, but when i tried to mux it (is the same title blue-...), i've got a "message" that ref-frames MUST be 7. but i'm able to play this title from a usb-stick on ps3(no lags, etc..).
Q: Is this Correct? (ref7, not ref8).

Make sure you have the proper versions of avisynth, haali splitter and ffdshow (check here (http://multiforum.deanbg.com/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=17)).

If you use [x] advanced subtitle processing option you'll get the original ASS/SSA. Otherwise multiAVCHD will extract the SSA and convert them to SRT.

A quick note about some changes in 750+:

* Changed: Error prompt replaced with Warning in the LOG when importing folders/files with non-ANSI characters. If subsequent processing fails I'll not consider it as a bug. For best results it is always better to use only ANSI symbols for paths/files (a-z).

* Fixed: [x] Set 12 equal chapter jumps option. If not selected, multiAVCHD will not auto-create 12 chapters, but will use only one (00:00:00.000) or will import the embedded marks from the imported file.

* Fixed: Proper AVCHDTN thumbnail is used for all titles when using only 1 chapter mark (TV/Cam).

Thank you, Dean! That worked flawlessly!!!

Now, If only we can figure a way to have multiple titles on a USB HDD to be browsable and playable ;) I am sure that day is close ;)
