View Full Version : multiAVCHD - author Blu-ray/AVCHD (Blu-ray players, camcoders, Viera TV) + (HD) DVD

Latest update to build 682 includes "one-click" HD-DVD processing. No need to go to title properties and select "Create HD-DVD title" option and ISO creation with ImgBurn or direct Burn-to-disc of the first HD-DVD title in the compilation (in 682+).
Transcoding will be auto-set for non-compliant streams. Uncrop will be auto set to 1920x1080, Framerate will be changed to 23.976 (if source is not 23.976)... etc.

A small one in 682+:
Specifying a different Temp folder ( in my case just drive L:\)
just to speed up HDD I/O intensive processes like extraction from D:\
leads to multiAVCHD aborting before final compilation selection window should appear.
It seems that no folder L:\_TEMP is generated by multiAVCHD, but expected.
If I generate the desired folder L:\_TEMP manually, then processing starts as desired.

:) Thanks. You will get the fix in the next update. (which is out now... you can use multiUPDATE.exe)

There is an "estimated output size" information in the media tab. If you do transcoding, then there are 'bitrate suggestions' in the "Transcode" menu.

Latest update includes
* Fix for the "TEMP" folder
* HD-DVD bitrate suggestions for one-click processing:
1) Load your video
2) Click "START"
3) Click "HD-DVD"
4) Click "Yes" to auto set hd-dvd compliant parameters to your video (for advanced settings you will need to go to "Transcode" menu)
5) Drop-down list will appear with 3 options:
[CURR]
Current bitrate with final size estimation + media fit. Using this option will not alter the video bitrate, but the original/entered in transcode menu will be used. Note the output size - you will see (DVD5), (DVD9) or "(No fit)" based on estimation.
[DVD5]
Option to change the bitrate so movie will fit a DVD-5 disc.
[DVD9]
Option to change the bitrate so movie will fit a DVD-9 disc.
Based on some calculations, the best you can get out of HD-DVD with bitrate of 8000kbps + AC3 audio 640kbps is ~ 2 hours and 8 minutes for DVD-9 (DL) and ~ 1 hour and 9 minutes for DVD-5 (SL).
Normal bitrares of ~4000-6000kbps will suit most of you, generating pristine 1920x1080 HD-DVD, so best way to go is use either [DVD5] or [DVD9] options.
edit: Those 20 seconds added at the end of the HD-DVD title with the replicated last frame are changed with quick 14 frames fade out + black 20 seconds to save bitrate and get the exact final size, as estimated.
edit2: x264 is replaced by new version (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1314614#post1314614) which you will need to download (http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/x264.rar)and replace x264.exe in \tools\ folder (core:71 r1210M 42d6b17).
Changing it was required, because of problems while transcoding some sources.
uncropMKV full download is also updated with this new x264 revision.
* MOV files can be transcoded now
* Transcode options will default to fully compliant level 4.0 settings in with x264 output is compliant with BD requirements
Since all updates are for build 682 you may want to update with multiUPDATE.exe

DeanK,
thanks for making an amazing piece of software. I am very much a newbie so I apologize in advance but I had a couple of questions.
I have an LG BH200 which right now, in its current firmware, will play discs authored as Blu-ray compatible but not AVCHD authored ones (the AVCHD authored discs come up as "DATA" only, even though they play fine in my other BD players).
Over the last couple of days, I have done the following trying to get this to work:
-Used a 1080i .ts recording from my Hauppauge HD-PVR (H264 format) as my source
-Used MultiAVCHD to author a "Blu-ray compatible" disc on a Verbatim DVD+R DL disc.
-Used Nero and Imgburn (UDF 2.5) to author the compilation, respectively
When authored with Nero, the BH200 displays the finalized DVD as a Blu-Ray disc, and it plays, but it stutters/judders badly whenever there is motion on-screen. When there's no motion it looks great but obviously this is a problem.
When authored with Imgburn, the BH200 won't play it at all -- it says "Blu-Ray" disc on the menu screen, but it then just sits there and does nothing, says "Reading" on the display.
Do you have any suggestions to authoring the disc in a certain way so that I could eliminate the judder/stuttering motion? I know the source files are completely fine, as they playback great on their own, and I've made AVCHD compatible discs which play fine too -- but only on other players, as the BH200 doesn't read them.
Any help/other suggestions would be greatly appreciated in advance!
thanks,
HockeyMan

You can try:
1) Author "AVCHD for DVD" compilation, but without the [-] Stricter AVCHD folder format option in "Author tab" - just uncheck the option. Burn with ImgBurn as UDF 2.5 (or better let multiAVCHD pass the options/folders to ImgBurn)
2) It is quite possible that your source video has high bitrate and your player will not spin-up the DVD disc to read everything on time. DVDs have much lower transfer rate than BD-R and if your player detects it as "Blu-ray" then it tries to read faster, but fails - hence the stuttering.

Turbo, Extreme and Insane profiles added in "Transcode" menu. While providing 2x / 3x / 4x speed improvement they will somewhat affect the final quality. Still these are quite fast and good options to chose for SD videos and 1280x720 output resolutions.
Few trailers and misc videos I tested (1920x1080) resulted in nice quality, achieved by 2 or 3 times faster encoding with x264.
HD-DVD "one-click" processing now supports "Quality" / "Bitrate suggestion" / "Hard-burned subtitles" choices in one "click-and-go" pop-up.

Ok, let's just call it a bad friday evening :) I'm sorry that I was edgy in few of my last posts. No hard feelings - I just have these days (like you do).
About x264: I posted in the "current patches" thread. It seems some of the last re-builds (with HRD/interlaced) fail with some video inputs. I was only able to find one version which works as it should, that's why there were 2 x264.exe changes last week. And the problem with some custom-compiled x264's is that they produce blocky output with bitrates ~100-200kbs, while 'asked' to use 5000-6000kbps.
So I had to switch to another version today.

Thanks for the info.
FYI, I tried a mkv to AVCHD with the recommended biterate to fit on a DVD9 and the output came up 500 MB undersized. I don't mind it being undersized, but 500 seems alot.
deank
15th August 2009, 11:57
Yes, sometimes with some sources (with multiple audio+subtitles) undersize may occur... but it is better than oversize. + to get more precise output you'll have to use 2-pass transcoding. Also you can always set your own-choice bitrate (5-10% higher than suggested).

Hi deank,
today, I tried the latest build (684+) on my Windows 7 (64bit) machine. I was adding a 17 GB VC-1 file to an already existing compilation with other movies.
I noticed that multiAVCHD was VERY slow when clicking on the newly added VC-1 movie. It took one or two minutes until the "edit" window opened, and also, the thumbnail preview in the edit window did not work. All other movie files in my compilation (all of them are AVC) open quickly as usual without any problems.
Previously, I installed the latest versions of Haali, AviSynth and ffdshow (ffdshow in its 64 bit version - there are no special 64bit versions of the other two programs I think).
It's not that multiAVCHD failed to handle the VC-1 movie - everything worked ok after multiAVCD did its job. But I also noticed during the process that it was very slow when creating the menu pages/chapters for the new movie (again, one minute or two per chapter). Moreover, I also saw a red "directshow failed" notice somewhere in the log window. Yet, the chapter thumbnails were correctly there after multiAVCHD finished. Unfortunately, I cannot post the log file as it was deleted when i reinstalled multiAVCHD.
I suppose that this sluggish behaviour of multiAVCHD has something to do with Windows 7 and/or the fact that I use the 64 bit version of it. Maybe directshow does not work correctly on Windows 7 when processing/editing a VC-1 movie...?
I tested the same compilation on my other machine with Vista 32 bit, and as expected, everything worked just like always. It's quick as always when editing the movie, and it also shows the thumbnail preview in the edit window.
Any ideas?
Thank you as always for your help!
Best,
Gero

No, it is not written to any file - just scrolling.
Do you have troubles with the encoding?

No, I don't, I was just wanting to see the latest command line that people are using since I have my own batch file that I like to run now and then that is customized for me.
Since x264 development is always ongoing and you seem to follow it very closely I thought it would be nice to see the CL. I guess my best bet is to just install meGUI and take a look there at the latest command lines?

Build 686
You can now load playlists (BDMV/AVCHD) (Blu-ray backups) and transcode them. This feature allows you to create movie-only back-ups (+extras as separate titles) quite easily, while giving you the option to add/remove/change audio, subtitles, chapters + changing framerate, resolution, hard-burned subtitles, or whatever you decide and finally get a menu to navigate the new output. Also it is quite easy to 'convert' a Blu-ray disc backup to HD-DVD in just one click.

No, I meant resume play at the last stop on a standalone player. I've never noticed that my AVCHD/Blu-ray discs that I authored using tsMuxeR will resume play at the last stop when I power off the player. When I author using multiAVCHD the disc will resume at the last stop when I power off the player.

* Fixed: Break/Stop buttons should work better now
* Fixed: some slow machines (PC) may have troubles with 'transcoding preview'
* Fixed: transcode preview stuck with 'previous-transcode-run' picture
* Added: a nice 'TV room' style by drpaulng (click to download the .rar and extract the .bmp in \res\ folder to use it):

I had to look thru several pages just to find an explanation for the different transcode speed. Maybe you should add that to the first page. :)

Just curious which of the two pass settings is about the quality and speed as the original sugestion for a fast 2 pass I gave a while back?

I think "1 PASS NORMAL" and "2 PASS NORMAL" are the original presets when there was a '[x] Two pass' option only. But the '1p turbo' and '2p fast' produce really nice quality at very good speed, too - it is always a good idea to test all profiles yourself with a short sample :)

Build 687:
Ok, another cool feature added:
http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/multiAVCHD_fitall1.jpg
[fit all] button added in media tab. You can see its functions in the screenshot above.
This is a one-click 'transcode all' button, which allows you to:
* Select output media (different sizes are listed + a custom one, which you can set in Author tab)
Selected sizes:
980 MiB [1 GB USB]
1980 MiB [2 GB USB]
3900 MiB [4 GB USB/SDHC]
4480 MiB [DVD-5]
7800 MiB [8 GB USB/SDHC]
7950 MiB [DVD-9]
15600 MiB [16 GB USB/SDHC]
23800 MiB [BD-25]
*HDD* MiB [KEEP SAME BITRATE]
***** MiB [CUSTOM SIZE SET IN AUTHOR TAB]
* Encoding quality
* Hard subtitles
* Resizing of 1920x1080 if the new bitrate is too low for quality transcoding
* Option to change framerate, so output will be compatible with PAL/NTSC locked players (like Viera TV sets)
* For better quality and higher bitrates it is best to use "Title properties" and remove all unwanted subtitle and audio tracks, to save bitrate for the video.
Using this screen will make multiAVCHD:
* auto-uncrop and resize all non-compliant resolutions, including SD 720x480/720x576
* auto-deinterlace or interlace the output
* resize+uncrop all weird resolutions, such as trailers or DivX half-HDTV recordings (like 624x352 or similar)
In the screenshot above I loaded an AVCHD folder with 11 titles, sized almost 45GiB.
I chose "Destination media: 23800MiB [BD-25]" and after bitrate recalculation and 'auto-transcode" settings, here is what multiAVCHD sets for transcoding, so this whole 45GiB compilation will fit a BD25:
http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/multiAVCHD_fitall2.jpg
Since some of the titles get lower bitrates for transcoding, they're auto set for resizing (because of the 1920x1080->1280x720 option).
Few other bugs are fixed (and may be some exist in this new option - so report them).
Dean :)

Another addition (requested) before 687 is released:
It is now possible to move both "scroll-list" and "chapter-thumbnails" in XMB styled menu:

@DMagic1
Hi!
Make sure you have created a main folder named MultiAVCHD in the ROOT directory of your drive (Do NOT put the "MultiAVCHD" directory in another directory)...
Thanks, it would seem it's not a firewall issue but the way the app handles directorys during updates. You may want to take a look at that deank.

@DMagic1
Does your latest post mean that my suggestion resolved your problem?

There is nothing special about directories and updates...
multiUPDATE uses the current path (the one it is located in), downloads the updated multiAVCHD.rar/.bin/.exe or whatever it finds and then simply launches it. All happens in the current folder. I tested with different locations - never had a problem as many other people do not have issues with it. It works in c:\program files\.... works in d:\multiavchd ... in c:\bla-bla bla - no matter what the names is and how many spaces there are.

Few fixes in 687+:
* Fixed importing of Blu-ray playlists/structures (some playlists caused multiAVCHD to loop and load m2ts files, which are not needed)
* Fixed 'fit-all'
* Fixed error with 'bitrate-suggestions' dialog when input file has no detected duration
* Added two small buttons to increase/decrease fontsize of the log messages
* Fixed hard-burned subtitles offset for PS3 output (going a bit far up than needed)
* Few other tweaks

I have just had a play with this and I had a couple of questions which I'm sure are buried in the last couple of thousands of posts.
I am reading in a HD-DVD structure to re-author as a blu-ray disc (on bd-9). Everything reads in fine but the main movie is obviously split across two 'feature' files. It doesn't look like the programme is automatically going to join them to one file on the blu-ray - is there a join function or will it in fact actually realise this and do it automatically? With everything setup, when I 'Start' and select the output options I immediately get a 'divide by zero error on line...' - obviously the programme works and it's my configuration causing the issue but is this likely to be because the directory isn't in the root?

I never said multiAVCHD will accept an HD-DVD structure and will reauthor it as BDMV. It will however import .EVO files and each file goes out as a title.
You can use eac3to to join the features and then import the result in multiAVCHD. Since I don't have a sample with 'feature_1...2...3', I wouldn't know what the result would be. I also think that EVOdemux can do it too.
And you said you get an error, but didn't say the most important (for me) - the line number where it occurred.

Build 689:
* External and Internal audio tracks are merged into one property-box
* Additional tab "Other audio" will appear if multiAVCHD is unable to detect audio properties (like some MLP or DTS tracks)
* It is now possible to configure external audio tracks processing (delay, language ID, Core extraction for HD audio, etc...)
* [x] Post-process SRT/SSA option added in Author tab. It will use BDsup2sub for reprocessing of the final SUP/PGS subtitles muxed into the video, using proper and compliant subtitle resolutions (720x480, 720x576, 1280x720, 1440x1080 and 1920x1080). Option is turned on by default and will fix the bug in tsMuxeR, which causes it to put PAL 576i subtitles at the wrong offset (same as for 480i videos).
* External audio tracks sizes/properties are now taken into account for bitrate-estimations
* Elementary video streams sizes/properties are now taken into account for bitrate-estimations
* uncropMKV (http://multiavchd.deanbg.com/uncropMKV/) is updated to 1.3 to support the same encoding profiles as in multiAVCHD
* x264.exe (http://koti.mbnet.fi/jeeb/x264/1222/x264.exe) is updated to r1222 in full packages of multiAVCHD and uncropMKV

Since build 688, multiAVCHD is distributed in installer version (using Nullsoft NSIS). Installer package includes Avisynth, ffdshow and Haali splitter for those who don't have or want to reinstall these applications. It also comes with uninstall function + shortcuts for multiAVCHD, multiUPDATE and uncropMKV.
