v0lt

Hmmm, seem to be anything Windows and/or driver related (Intel) because EVR and AVR-CP don't work as well. Strange ...
You may have overridden these values in your driver settings.

In MPC VR, you can disable all formats for the DXVA2/D3D11 VideoProcessor. In this case, YUV to RGB conversion and brightness and contrast adjustments will be handled using shaders.

I've noticed a minor glitch I've never seen before with MPC (both BE and HC). It could totally be only me, so I just report it if somebody else noticed it too.

When I enter fullscreen, the window player appears up-left for some ms before displaying the fullscreen image. OK it's really short, it's easier to noticed if you are on 23 Hz refresh rate.
Reproduced with MPCVR and EVR so not linked to renderer.
I'm on Windows 11 with a Geforce 1060.

Here is what I managed to capture for 1 frame. What you see up-left is what will be in full screen some ms later.

I've been using AltDVB (https://www.altx.ro/2025/06/altdvb-v25/)with MPC standalone filters since MPC Video Renderer support arrived. This was to see how the filters worked, and as I expected, they weren't having much trouble. There are some visual issues, which I think you can fix. I'm using MPC Audio Renderer specifically for its low latency. The MPC Audio Decoder also couldn't decode AAC audio channels. It has no issues with AAC LATM. Here's (https://drive.google.com/file/d/18J6e0t_dN6WcGWbPCtRFKjQYN4KprGW9/view?usp=drive_link) the recording I got with AltDVB.

Any possibility of MPC-BE supporting GLSL shaders? I'd really like some options when it comes to the somewhat limited upscaling options in MPC-VR.
Ether that or some upscalers added that are a lot more GPU intensive. Not a fan of Nvidia's Super Resolution.

Any possibility of MPC-BE supporting GLSL shaders?
Use a DirectShow video renderer that uses OpenGL. It may also support GLSL shaders.
If such a video renderer doesn't exist, create one yourself or hire someone else.

huhn

current shader support doesn't support the change of the resolution.

this is why you can use glsl with mpv in directx mode: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Portable_Intermediate_Representation

or technically HLSL in openGL/vulkan mode

Sorry if this is the wrong place as this thread is specifically for BE, but since it has been advertised to me as practically also for HC, here goes:

Linking the alpha channels for subtitles hasn't worked for me for quite some time now. I enable it in the menu, apply the changes, close the menu and then open it again only to see it unchecked. I currently have the latest beta and the problem still persists. Anyone else have this or is there something wrong with my setup?

used to play in an earlier version of MPC-BE but not in v1.8.6 or v1.8.7, [Win10P x64].

The "QMPlay_length1=xxxx" is a private to player QMPlay2 flag, perhaps MPC-BE is tripping over that.
The playlist plays just fine in Potplayer current.

EDIT: Multiple, "Failed to render the file" messages.

EDIT: Sometimes does play at least one of the YT clips properly. [Not always the same ones, only tried v1.8.6 where it sometimes plays some tracks ok]
EDIT: The tracks it does play ok seem a bit random [can change on each playlist play].
No big deal if you cannot fix, I can use Potplayer.

EDIT: Quite recently QMPLay2 had some problems playing playlists clips [under Windows], Y.T. seems to have changed some stuff, resulting in longer period to parse meta data or something.
The problem seemed related to some versions of yt-dlp.exe under windows only [QMPLay2 uses yt-dlp.exe, linux ver$ yt-dlp was ok].
QMPLAY2:- https://github.com/zaps166/QMPlay2

EDIT: Some notes I took a while back for yt-dlp.exe, current version is ok in QMPLay2

Tested versions of yt-dlp.exe [copy to, C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\QMPlay2\yt-dlp.exe]
yt-dlp.exe from https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp

2025.06.25 BAD
2025.07.21 BAD
2025.08.11 BAD
2025.08.20 BAD

For the bad versions yt-dlp.exe, caused failures on 2nd title in this playlist [for QMPLay2, not sure for MPC-BE, cant remember].

HaHa!, The fact that MPC-BE managed to parse it into its internal playlist (shown in Playlist window), made me think that it should work ok.
I did not realize that the

YouTube://{https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x68qv4dmDKg}

You might need to add the Deno module to the player.

MPC-BE v1.8.6 and same playlist, as for stuff in BLUE above, ie sometimes plays some of the files.

I note in your posted image, it only loaded 6 of the 8 clips into the playlist, ie failed on two of them.

Hi guys, I've just stumbled over this [FreeTube releases, See Aug 23] :- https://github.com/FreeTubeApp/FreeTube/releases

v0.23.8 Beta Pre-release
Summary

This hotfix release fixes the This video is unavailable errors.

Important

Video loading times have increased because YouTube's servers now return errors if you attempt to start a video before the preroll ads have finished. While FreeTube skips the ads, it still has to wait until the preroll ad sequence completes before the video can begin playing. This is a limitation imposed by YouTube’s servers, and it also affects other YouTube-related projects, such as yt-dlp.
Fixes

Wait for pre-roll ads to finish in /player request by @absidue in #7887

Perhaps reason for some clips to sometimes fail render when playing *.pls playlist.
EDIT: Freetube currently fails on all clips. (??? is not a function )

LigH

Most often 3 or 4 seconds.

Hello!

I use the absolutely excellent (a lifesaver) MPC Video Renderer (0.9.13.2451 (2025-09-15).
With PotPlayer I get a really good picture, in all formats including UHD but...
The strange thing is that in UHD, (HEVC) I can both play and pause PotPlayer and take a screenshot, CTRL+E.
If I play a Blu-ray [BD] or .mkv, (AVC), I can only take a screenshot if PotPlayer is playing, if I pause the player I can't take a screenshot.
If I turn off MPC Video Renderer, screenshot works.
Is there something I can solve in the settings inside MPC?
PotPlayer completely refuses if MPC is the renderer.

Best regards,

just a guess:
- This software includes a video decoder based on FFmpeg (http://www.ffmpeg.org) which is licensed under LGPL license.(To review the LGPL license, look for LGPL.txt in install directory) The modified FFmpeg source can be downloaded from http://potplayer.daum.net/devel/ffmpeg.zip
never was there never will be there and even if it was there it wouldn't be enough

the VR has a way to make a screenshoot as can be seen in mpc-BE/HC if they don't want to use that so be it.

LigH
30th September 2025, 12:07
@varekai:

Probably some that rely on DirectShow only. MPC-BE/HC use a few specific filters with a direct API, IIRC.

v0lt
30th September 2025, 14:47
Please define "normal" players.
DirectShow players that use the IBasicVideo::GetCurrentImage method (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/control/nf-control-ibasicvideo-getcurrentimage) to take screenshots.
In some situations, DirectShow players can use IExFilterConfig::Flt_GetBin("displayedImage") (https://github.com/Aleksoid1978/VideoRenderer/blob/41cc61ba3233af5f6aed5b119f6086b750c0ff50/Include/FilterInterfaces.h#L61) method.

The question of why PotPlayer can't take a screenshot, unlike other players, should obviously be addressed to the PotPlayer developer.
We have no ability or desire to debug code that we don't have.

LigH
30th September 2025, 15:28
Side note, may not belong exactly to this question:

If a player uses the Hardware Overlay renderer, a screenshot back from the renderer may not be possible because this is a one-way renderer, the overlay area in the VRAM cannot be read back to the PC, its content only goes out to the video connectors (that's why it is written so fast). It could only be taken from the video decoder.

v0lt
30th September 2025, 16:06
Thanks to all the translators. The translations have been updated.

If a player uses the Hardware Overlay renderer, a screenshot back from the renderer may not be possible
MPC Video Renderer uses Direct3D 9 and 11. Surfaces or textures named "Overlay" are not used.

Yes this was part of the secure media render pipeline preparation for HDCP/DRM encryption this was a requirement by microsoft and nvidia enforced it somewhere i think in the range of the 17x driver actually it was the overlay mirroring
ATi/AMD was in a lot of ways there much better prepared as well when some other decisions where made in the complete security restructuring also in preparation for the combined XBox Windows Universal Apps architecture ATI/AMD was much better prepared, still Nvidias Engineers could compensate many problems fast.
It was kind of crazy how ATI/AMD could never really utilize all this efficiently having a complete Hardware Design Advantage 1 Generation after the other, but after D3D9 and R300 ATi/AMD never could succeed and get in front of "The way its meant to be played".
And then Nvidia Designed this combined VPU IP Core ATI/AMD never saw the Day of Light against.
I send so much bug reports to ATi/AMD i waited so loooong for any answer i send one to Nvidia and you could be sure it was fixed in the next Driver (who's engineers flooded here and promoted their API and took feedback and bug reports so serious owned everything in how the VPU crushed AMDs entire Stack Design and Framework,Feedback support,Communication and entire Team Engagement)

Just crazy they maybe have a in theory less efficient raw hardware design but the machine who compensates it, finds optimal solutions in its limits and ensures the quality runs so well OILED.

edited, made sure to have the paths correct, merged the .reg file and low & behold...
Now both madVR and MPC Video Renderer work absolutely perfectly... if only MPC could take screenshots (AVC) when I pause the player...
I not only believe in miracles, I expect them...

@LigH
Okey, thanks for info.

@v0lt
swooosh... way over my head!
But PotPlayer can take screenshots (AVC), but just not when player is paused... go figure...
Thanks for the updated MPC Video Renderer, much appreciated!
yes because they steal the code. there is a reason they are treated like they are because they are just scums. even if the link would work they would still not uphold LGPL they are objectively bad actors.

before 404 this was something like ahfdsjgybv no this is not a joke.

I have no idea what this "ahfdsjgybv" means??
Software history is full of open source code being "stolen".
Some popular open source software became commercial on a large scale in one way or another.
I know of many such examples, these people, now filthy rich individuals and companies are the real scums!!
But despite stolen opensource code and all that shady stuff, PotPlayer is a fantastic free media player!
If for example VLC, MPC-HC or MPC-BE could achieve what PotPlayer can, I'll happily switch.
Until then... time will tell...
If the Korean Daum Potplayer developers are shady as you say, they still maintain and regulary provide updates free of charge.
Also they are kind enough to answer emails and provide valuable information. I have contacted them many times.
Sometimes I get useful solutions, sometimes just the answer; reset to default...
Sadly there isn't any forum, it used to be but not anymore.

Do a simple google boolean search:
"what is the five most popular free media players of all time"

Anyway, I'm happy and satisfied with my setup, finally(!), PotPlayer, MPC Video Renderer and madVR work as I want and I can switch renderers whenever I want,
The video image on the two PC Dell displays/Sony TV I get is fantastic, the new TV and UHD are the icing on the cake...
Consider this the end of the thread, no need beat a dead horse anymore...

Thanks and kind regards,
varekai

they put a file up and hit the middle of the keyboard to have something in there as "source code".

they are 100% aware of what they are doing and no you can not get away this easy with that stuff if you are a big company.

It is rather strange behaviour for Korean Devs you would rather guess from Chinese Devs ;)

though without doubt it was always on a very high technical standard it solved a lot of problems efficiently others lacked it was especially robust i remember with transport streams, and i designed my first Fullscreen GUI for it with a lot of layer function complexity.
And often when others had problems then that wasn't the case for it and i often cross checked interop and bugs with it, it certainly has a very "stable" Design Methodology yet it is very complex.

And it had this change the renderer on the fly feature no one else had, that was very impressive.
And im pretty sure they thought a lot of gui osd rendering and sync impact on the video playback inside of Windows with and without DWM.

Hello, can someone please help with a problem I'm having? I currently use MPC-BE in conjunction with MPC-VR, LAV Filters, and SVP (Rife) for motion interpolation on my Samsung VRR television. While the variable refresh rate feature engages successfully with certain files, its behavior is inconsistent even with the same file, for some files dont engage at all. I have exhausted all combinations of settings in my attempts to find a consistent solution. I have been unable to make it work consistently. While I know this is straightforward with MPV, I would prefer to continue using MPC-BE for my playback. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I doubt you need LAV Video Decoder.
In any case, you should contact SVP support or their forum (https://www.svp-team.com/forum/).

First thanks to take the time. I doubt you need LAV Video Decoder.
In any case, you should contact SVP support or their forum (https://www.svp-team.com/forum/).
I familiar to the forum, I've been a participant on the SVP forum for some time and have engaged in many of the discussions there.

Video File → MPC-BE (Source) → LAV Filters (Decoder) → VapourSynth Filter (SVP with RIFE) → MPC Video Renderer → Display

To my understanding the MPC Video Renderer is responsible for engaging VRR here. The MPC Video Renderer can communicate directly with the graphics card driver to enable VRR. For this to happen, the renderer must be configured to use a presentation mode that supports VRR, such as "Flip Mode". Display synchronization: The frame rate produced by the SVP and RIFE interpolation is not always perfectly stable.By leveraging VRR, the MPC Video Renderer tells the display to wait for each new frame instead of trying to refresh at a fixed rate, thus eliminating stutter and tearing.

I have managed to achieve this, but the process is inconsistent and does not work every time and with every file in my library (mostly 4K DV/HDR/HDR10 MKV files) This is why I am asking for assistance here; I hope that those with more technical knowledge can help me find a reliable solution or maybe be interested in taking a look at this.

As already said above, VRR IS NOT SUPPORTED by the video renderer!!!

The only tiny miniscule chance to get support for it is to donate a proper VRR capable monitor to the developers, which you are not going to do.

So final conclusion is that VRR IS NOT SUPPORTED. Period. End of discussion.
