I have no idea how ac3filter got on my PC, and I couldn't find it under Programs. I downloaded the ac3filter installer, installed it, then uninstalled it. That seems to have removed all traces of ac3filter, and now it doesn't show up under filters while playing a video. That also solved my bitstreaming issue. PCM is gone now, and bitstreaming now works with MPC-BE.

There is no "skin" in MPC-BE.
Want do some changing - look at PlayerToolBar.

Don't know if the latest alpha (1.6.0.6659) supports 3rd party online streaming, like "https://www.khanacademy.org/math/geometry-home/triangle-properties/altitudes/v/proof-triangle-altitudes-are-concurrent-orthocenter", using yt-dlp. When opened by MPC-BE, it's showing "Opening..." like forever.
But this one can be opened using MPC-HC, also by utilizing "yt-dlp"
Looks like MPC-BE did open that link but stuck and dead at some point.

I found the problem. I had a --write-auto-subs inside "%AppData%\yt-dlp\config", which cause MPC-BE to hang. The other switches, which I had in config can live with MPC-BE with no problem.
Don't know if it's a bug, but MPC-HC seems not affected by this switch.

You can only use the "compand" filter. It is easy to understand if you reveal the drop-down list.

I am having a problem with MPC-BE's "RESUME playback from where you left". A specific video I created with DVDFab's help is always crashing (black screen and not allowing me to go forward or back).
But if I use MPC-HC this isn't happening.
I believe the way this file was created is what's causing this. Or perhaps the video decoders currently being used in MPC.

Even this one can't be played fine with MPC-BE. I noticed in MPC-HC resume playback doesn't work only with this one. And if this feature is turned on for MPC-BE there will be crashing.
Using MPC-BE you are only able to play this file again if you hit control + alt + del, then reopen the program and disable "resume file from where you left".
There is something broken inside this, because it's resisting the idea of resuming.
The best explanation is that DVDFab did something wrong while reencoding.

Perfect playback. Test in Software/D3D11/DXVA2 decoding. Test with EVR-CP/MPC VR.
Using only internal filters.
1 - Check what filters use when playback.

Anyway, your screenshot says "Formato de saida: D3D11(HEVC)" and "Adaptador grafico: Intel HD Graphics 4600". IIUC it means that MPC Video decoder tries to use hardware decoding (from HD4600?). Don't know why... it shouldn't.

Hi,
What is the difference in functionality in the sound processing options between "Gain" and "Auto Volume Control"?
They are mutually exclusive and I think they work differently even though while both promote a volume increase, they don't sound the same as each other.
Gain can be increased to a maximum of 10.0 dB and Auto has the preset defaults of level 75, release time 8.
Is gain just a uniform increase of volume beyond 100% or is it different?
To explain my scenario, 6-channel E-AC3 audio down-mixed to 2-channel results in spoken dialogue being very quiet. The Windows Film&TV app automatically boosts the volume to where dialogue is clearly audible, there is no setting for it, it does it on its own. What is it doing differently? Is it decoding and mixing the sound differently? Or is it just automatically applying a gain or auto boost on its own?
Trying to determine what is the best method of volume amplification for 6-channel E-AC3 down-mixing here.
Thanks!
Edit: I looked up a chart, an applied gain of 3 dB will result in a volume of 200% if your volume was already set for 100%. So that means it is a uniform volume increase and not a normalization. I'm now wondering if MPC-BE would benefit from a little hollow circle icon or something next to the speaker icon, so when it is clicked it fills solid and automatically toggles gain on or off and I guess the exact # for it would remain in the sound processing options.
Edit 2: Auto volume is awful, it will boost that soft little background music during quiet moments up high.

Hello. I am encountering stuck playback issue. Since r6532, on Windows 7 (Tested with 2 Windows 7 pc's. I think there is no problem on Windows 10), if MPC Audio Renderer is being used with WASAPI Shared mode, my video files with flac audio track(s) cannot be played properly unless I choose any other non-flac audio track. It is also problematic when I load an external flac audio during video playback.
Can anyone else reproduce this problem?

I have tried it again. In the latest build it happens on Windows 7 when the flac track is NOT default track or when it is an external audio. After switching to the flac track, the playback would be stuck. Perform a seek may resume the playback(not always), but there will still be no sound.

I have not been able to reproduce the problem on my Windows 7 x64.
There may be a slight delay when switching tracks, but then playback continues.
I have just found out it is also related to the setting of HD audio driver.
If the default format is set as 16bit 48000Hz or 24bit 48000Hz, the problem occurs (it will be normal by selecting anything else). Updating the driver does not solve the problem. Again, the problem does not occur on Windows 10 with same setting (48KHz as default, MPC AR WASAPI Shared mode, etc).
It is quite strange, even if Realtek did something wrong in the driver, I cannot see any reason why it can accept 96KHz but not 48KHz, and only when the player is playing flac format?
Anyway, if you can eventually reproduce it, it would be better to mention it as known issue in changelog. But may be it does not worth fixing it at all, as there should not be any problem by setting 96KHz simply (and Realtek's stock value was 44.1KHz as far as I remember).

Forgive me a bit of OT, please. What kind of CPU (number of cores / frequency) is needed for software-only decoding of 4K H.265?
huhn
16th November 2021, 19:02
there is no answer to that because not every h265 stream has the same difficulty.
frequency and core number don't tell a real story about the performance too.
bozek
17th November 2021, 07:21
Well, when 1080p became a thing in 2008 with the coming of Blu-ray, no single-core CPU at the time was able to decode it but even a mediocre dual-core CPU with about 1.8+ GHz was enough. Following the same logic, seeing as 4K has about 4 times as many pixels as 1080p we would need about 8 cores @ 2GHz or 4 cores at 4GHz... Sure, H265 is more power hungry but this should cancel out with how much the CPU architecture advanced since then. Does my math seem okay to you?
huhn
17th November 2021, 08:00
a zen 1 is massively slower in h265 decoding compared to a zen 2 no that's not how it works.
if you only care about UHD BD spec H265 than every hardware decoder is more than fast enough for it.
a dual core zen 3 with 4 GHZ would be able todo 100 mbit 10 bit.
core number and frequency are pointless.

I tried to limit my Intel i5 11th gen CPU to 2 cores and play jellyfish-140-mbps-4k-uhd-hevc-10bit.mkv. All I got is massive stutter.
So I really doubt that Zen3 with 2 cores can decode it in realtime.

maybe if i take the good cores only... but what ever as i said pointless anyway.
edit: because i'm not going to test it with all teh possible H265 encdoing settign which may or may not effect decoding speed.

The option "Use system layout channels" in the MPC Audio Renderer, what is the effect if this option is checked or unchecked?

The option "Use system layout channels" in the MPC Audio Renderer, what is the effect if this option is checked or unchecked?
1. Set "stereo" in system setup.
2. Open a media file with "5.1" sound.
3. Change the "Use system layout channels" setting (don't forget to apply), and look at the Status tab of the active MPC Audio Renderer.
clsid
30th November 2021, 15:23
With that option disabled you will run into problems when playing 5.1 on a stereo setup or headphones. No mixing means that excess channels will simply be dropped, and a dropped Center channel means no voices or at least super low volume.
Is that intentional? What is the use case of wanting to do that?
v0lt
30th November 2021, 16:19
Is that intentional? What is the use case of wanting to do that?
I gave an example of how to see the option work. The number of channels in the media file and the system may not be the same as I said (it could be the other way around - "stereo" -> 5.1).
This option is old and I don't remember why it was added. It is possible that some audio devices do not need to specify the system channel layout.
Sunspark
30th November 2021, 19:01
In old posts there was talk about how checking or unchecking it was needed for some people with 7.1 systems/headphones to send the correct number of channels. As far as I can tell, if you're on a stereo system you don't need to have it checked because of down-mixing.
But, here is an interesting thing I have noticed, the MPC-BE app has mixing in two separate places. In the Sound Processing options under channel mixer, you can select "Stereo" and it will down-mix from 5.1. The MPC Audio Renderer also has a mixer built-in as well. If you don't have the sound processing option checked, and are not using mixing using anything else (e.g. Windows shared, or LAV) the MPC renderer itself will downmix to stereo, visible in the filter properties status (status screen says input 5.1, output 2.0, it is not clear to me whether it is dropping channels and presenting the appearance of mixing).
I think there is a slight audible difference between the two down-mixing implementations. That's ok, because every down-mixing implementation I have listened to sounds slightly different. But given how tightly coupled the renderer is with the app, I question whether it makes sense to maintain two separate mixing code paths. Is the renderer actually down-mixing, or is it dropping channels?
PS. v0lt, the directsound renderer is busted, the output is super quiet no matter what combination of settings is used. Only the MPC renderer works.

I've come across an issue where using an HDMI connection to TV thru my new AVR is concerned.
before purchasing this new AVR, the HDMI graphics card was connected Directly to the flatscreen, I had no issue where the programs recognizing each of the two monitors was concerned. The desktop monitor is 1 & the 60" flatscreen is 2, I use fullscreen mode in the program, MPC-BE is the default media player, click to open a movie file & the program instantly goes full screen to to 2.
Now that I am going thru the AVR before going to the flatscreen the program can't find screen #2 automatically anymore. Open a movie file & the image appears full screen on the desktop monitor, to get the image back onto the flatscreen one has to click the mouse to ..1. shrink the image to window size on the desktop 2. click the mouse again to shift the image to 2 where it should be.
I can't rectify this issue at all, I have 2 operating systems on the computer, win7 & 10 (side by side), they both are identical in their programs & they both exhibit this issue.
This issue is only with Black Edition, MPC-HC (version 1.9.13) is also on the op/sys & it functions without any issue, what can we do to correct this disruption?
thx
