@devs. I like to use the 'recent files' list to have some files, especially 4k/HDR test/demo files, quickly and easily accessible !!
However, if I use the 'play directory' function these entries are pushed down the 'recent files list' and maybe even get off it altogether. So I would like to see that either:
- files from 'play directory' do not get added to the recent files list
or even better
- a 'play directory' event gets its own entry in the recent files list !! So it could be repeated just as easily as a 'recent file'.
(I know that I could increase the recent files list up to 100 but I don't like that, sorry)
@Grimsdyke
I advise you to create an additional tab with a playlist, which will be your test files.

Does anyone know if it's somehow possible to use the dual audio output in MPC-BE to send Atmos/DTS:X bitstream out one output and a simple stereo downmix or just the L+R channels as a 2 channel PCM or even 2 channel analog out the other output?

Dual audio output possible only the same type - or Bitstream or PCM.

@devs. Since the volume is so low on my system's DirectSound-HDMI I recently switched to MPC audio renderer and the difference is really huge but unfortunately there are also now drop outs, especially on 4K files.
I am not sure if this is related to the recent fixes you applied based on peter0815x reports or maybe tuesday's Windows patches creates problems but this did not occured until Sunday !!

I randomly picked 4540 and with this version the problem was even worse - dozens of drop outs/glitches per minute !! So something must have happened with Tuesday's patches. Something was changed that my setup can't handle
properly or maybe even broken.
The only way to at least bypass this issue (for now) that I found is to deactivate 'dual-audio-out' and use the switch within mpc audio renderer to use the analogue-outs when I need them.

Thanks, it seems to be working well. But why is WASAPI the "better choice"?
nevcairiel
19th May 2019, 01:26
The only reason to ever use ASIO is if your audio device supports nothing else properly (like some "pro" audio devices do), or has actual broken support for WASAPI. Ultimately bitexact audio is bitexact audio, and the API used doesn't make a huge difference.
There is a few other reasons, but none that apply to video playback.
Even more so, there is no reason to force usage of ASIO if the player has no first-class ASIO support in the first place, you just know its going to be worse then.

with the asio plugin you can get strange noises when you seek a video or when you go from dvd menu to the movie.
seems the asio plugin is playing some noises when the audio stream is interrupted.
may be a bug in asio plugin (or unoptimized plugin)

MPC-BE is giving me problems recently, I don't know if it's due to a recent windows update (I'm on Windows 10 Pro x64 build 1809).
It often hangs or exists when I start playing a UHD BD Folder.
When I play the same title with MPC-HC (I re-installed it to debug), I have no problem.
I tried to completely uninstall MPC-BE, delete the folder and registry and use all default settings (no madVR, nothing, just default internal filters), the issues are still there.
It seems to be worse when MyMovies calls MPC-BE from MCE, but I have issues even when I play the title standalone.
Some titles don't play or only play for a few seconds (The Meg). Other play fine.
Really weird. I never experienced anything like that. I tried to revert to earlier versions, same issues.
I tried different drivers for my 1080ti, 385.28 which usually works fine with everything up to the latest 430.64, still have issues.
Anyone has any idea?
I know that not everyone experiences this, but I've never had a situation like this before.
MPC-BE has always worked flawlessly on my rig, and it's been my player of choice for years.

What does this mean exactly? How do you start it? Via File -> Open?
And which MPC-BE version? Latest stable?

Last MPC-BE Stable, but also as I said older versions I tried.
I simply drop the UHD BD Folder in the MPC-BE window, or I start the .mpls directly from the "recent files".
Or the title is selected in MyMovies and launched that way (as a BD folder).
I used to have issues only with MyMovies initially, and only with some titles (it started with The Meg), but now even playing a test file such as a HDR pattern from the Masciola's set of UHD test patterns fails. All the movies titles are rips from my original discs, not dogy downloads.
MPC-HC plays all these files/folders flawlessly, and so does jRiver, so it's not the content but something weird that happened with MPC-BE on that rig and can't be undone, even with a full uninstall including reset to defaults and registry section delete.
I have MPC-BE working with these same titles on my MBP, so I know the software is still working for most, I've just never experienced a situation where I couldn't get MPC-BE to work on my HTPC, which is my main rig to play movies.
I'm asking in case someone has experienced something similar recently and has found a solution. Otherwise I'll have to stick with MPC-HC, as it's working fine, but I prefer MPC-BE a lot more.

Does it happen with all files or just one specific video- and/or audiocodec?
What audio device do you use? Try to use another one for investigation.
Try to disable/enable hardware acceleration. Any difference?
Can you provide a sample UHD BD and another file for testing purposes, but only as p.m.
Devs know more ;)

Thanks, but all these are basic debugging steps.
I'm asking here in case any one has had recently issues with a perfectly working MPC-BE that suddenly stopped working, and found a way to resolve them.
I've spent hours debugging, I've been a MPC-BE users for years, again I have never been in this situation.
I can't give a sample, I've ripped all my files to bd folders. The issue happens with most UHD Bluray folders as I said, so HEVC. Audio format doesn't matter but I can double check that.
Again, all these files/folders used to work fine with MPC-BE until a few weeks ago. They still work fine with MPC-HC and jRiver. So nothing wrong with the files/folders themselves.
I tried using internal filters with defaults after a reinstall of MPC-BE instead of the LAV/MadVR installed in jRiver, but that doesn't help.
I spent a few weeks trying to debug this, and am again only asking in case someone has experienced a samilar issue recently and found a way to fix it.
The only change I've made, which shouldn't play a part when using MPC-BE as a standalone, is installing the 8.8.2 MCE for windows 10 when 8.8.1 stopped working. The latest 8.8.3 doesn't work (can't install it). That could explain issues when launching with MyMovies, but I don't see why it would change anything when using MPC-BE standalone.

a system restore to get a video player to work when another one does sounds like a bit much...
Some titles don't play or only play for a few seconds (The Meg). Other play fine.
is this consistent?
do you have something like this in an event manager: "Resource-Exhaustion-Detector" ?

Agreed, plus even if it solved it temporarily it would happen again if cause by an automatic update of some sort. I'd rather find the reason.
is this consistent?
Yes, except that it's getting worse. I started with a few titles, including The Meg, and it would only happen when playing from MCE. I.e. if I tried to play the same title from MPC-BE as a standalonem using the recent file list (so exactly the same plalist as the one played from MCE that crashed), it would work fine. Now it's more titles, and even as a standalone, even simple HDR patterns that MPC-BE has played forever. All these titles that MPC-BE isn't playing anymore, it used to play them fine until a few weeks ago.

Don't know, will check for this and will report back, thanks.

A system restore point will probably fix it and you can carefully watch every change when it happens again. But you don‘t have to, I only want to help.
A restore point on a HTPC won‘t hurt if you have settings you use already for months.

Okay, so I've got it back to the stage where if I start playback from MyMovies with some titles (for example The Meg), playback doesn't start, and if I go to MPC-BE and look at recent file, the file that was attempted to play is there, and if I play it it plays fine.
Some title won't play (The Meg), others will play fine (Lucy). All UHD Bluray folders. Very consistent. The same titles that don't play do play with MPC-HC (even from MyMovies) or jRiver.
I looked at the event log and here is what I get when MPC-BE fails to launch:

Unfortunately, the fact that MPC-BE is now working perfectly well again as standalone points to a problem with the latest MCE 8.8.2 / windows build 1809 issue, or possibly MyMovies. Before 1809, when I used 1806 and MCE 8.8.1, all was working fine.
I only posted in this thread when I started to have issues with the standalone app, but following my last debugging session, I don’t have any more issues with MPC-BE standalone.
For some reason, MPC-BE doesn’t work anymore when called from MyMovies within MCE, and MPC-HC doesn’t have this issue.
Not a title issue, as I said from the beginning, as The Meg is played fine now in standalone MPC-BE (even with external LAV and madVR).
I understand it’s not your job to fix MCE and Windows 10 forced updates, but you won’t be able to reproduce unless you use MyMovies/Media Centre to launch MPC-BE.
I’ll keep using MPC-HC with MyMovies for now, but I’ll see if I can get MPC-BE to work again with MCE. Maybe a reinstall of MCE or similar. I think the best place to discuss this is the MyMovies forum, so I’ll post there.
I’ll keep you posted if I find a solution.
Thanks for your help, and for a great software!

No improvement. I think it's a quirk with my DAC.
That said, I noticed another peculiarity with WASAPI Exclusive. In that mode, certain passages of loud bass sound distorted. No such issue in WASAPI Shared.
It's obvious in the Ready Player One, when King Kong slams his hands against the road during the race where the main character drives backward to get the key.
