If you like, i can make .ico files 32x32 pixels ... and you create an skinable system for icons with an .ini file reader.
Then all people can do skins for this. ;)

I take it that this app should work straight out of the box?(with all the defaults) I was wondering if my problems could be down to the fact that I had a go at using GK previously and that requires the xvid codec to be setup. I was thinking of creating a new partition and setting this up afresh to see if this alleviates my problems.
Manono...no changing the I/L didnt work and just video alone showed exactly the same problems . Good point about upping the gain in the ac3 filter that cured the low sound level. I could send or put online the clip (50mb?) that is causing problems. or make it shorter.

Quite a few people offered to help designing logo for this new tool (which looks like gonna be rebranded into AutoGK soon) but so far I havn't seen any results. :(
I'm planning on releasing first stable version soon (at some point next week probably), so now I'm in need of actual logo :) Ideally logo should contain current one as a part of it and reflect the ease of encoding process (or just be sooo cool that nobody will care what it relfects :) ). I'm totally open to ideas, so contact me if you have something concrete done already, please.

that's sad, wait for DivX version then (I hope your player doesn't have any probs with bframes in divx, although I'll be basing it on 5.1.1 which is pretty new)

B frames not problematic in Divx, I have been told by the same source that under divx, gmc and b-frames are ok. In my own experience all my divx encodes play back correctly, done using dix 5.05 (I wont be upgrading to divx5.1, unless I am assured it will work.) Still will try every so -often..

Hi Len0x, GHIF4U is making really big steps. I'm testing new 0.48 with my usual vob.
Did I miss something? Why does GKIF4U makes two "Analyzing source" steps, producing the same "interlace.log" file?
This is my log:
[24/11/2003 23.22.07] Input dir: C:\ROCKY_HORROR_PICTURE_SHOW_4prove\VIDEO_TS

etc..
There's another cosmetic thing: on my PC (Windows 2000, Matrox G400 etc...) the arrows in log windows always disappear: I have to click on them (well, they are invisible, so exactly I have to click where I think they should be :D  )to make them re-appear.
Anyway, it's great, one of the best tool around (if only I had a more powerful pc...)
Bye, Yotsuya.

@Darth Maul BR
Good that you mentioned it. 32x32 was too big size for it. So i resized it but couldn't get rid of small artifacts around question mark, so it looked kidna ugly...
@yotsuya-san
About analyzing step - if source is detected as interlaced GKIF4U tries to swap field order and see if its still interlaced after that. Moreover the order is chosen so that interlacing percent is minimal. This fixes some of the wrongly mastered PAL DVDs. May be I should make log messages more clear about that.
About log window - yes, I have the same here, but didn't have a chance to see what's going on. But I will.

small sizing problem. Let me start by staying that I don't intend to burn any of my movies onto CD so this is really just an observation. The last two film rips I've completed have gone slightly over the requested number of CDs.
The Right Stuff ( requested 3 CD ) ( used version 4.5 )
25/11/2003 05:28 2,205,380,608 the_right_stuff.avi
25/11/2003 05:30 733,829,120 the_right_stuff.CD1.avi

25/11/2003 05:36 3,368,960 the_right_stuff.CD4.avi
25/11/2003 05:36 16,215 the_right_stuff_gk.log
xmen 2 ( requested 2CD ) ( used version 4.0 )
went to 2 full disks but a small 3/4Mb cd3.avi file. I've deleted the CD files. I have the logs if you want them.
Doesn't really matter as you only miss out the end of the credits. Maybe you've solved the 'credit-encoding' issue after all !

Thanks. Open folder icon is very cool after I extracted one image out of it. For buttons I actually need only bmp (which is not a problem for me to convert), but I still have problem with help icon - do you see the black shadow around it? This shadow is kinda cut on the right and bottom, so that it looks incomplete. If you could remove the shadow or make it a bit bigger (a couple of pixels) so that the whole thing is completed that would be much better. About "Start" and "Abort" buttons. I thought you were gonna make cold and hot images based on those from XP theme you originaly gave me, not the ones that I have now...

Hi len0x,
it seems, that you are using only one consecutive B-frame setting
in XviD configuration, is there any particular reason for this ?
Isn't it better to use currently "classic" B-frame control settings
2-150-75-0 or this automatically depends on compressibility test result ?
Thanks for great tool !

it's a judgment call. I don't use classic settings indeed, but there are so many "classic" settings, that leaving this choice to you would make my life pretty difficult as everyone would want their own settings to be used...
As for 2 bframes - most of hardware cannot play it and I don't see much improvement in comp test results either.

Firstly, a big thanks to len0x for such a great tool, and manono for such a great tutorial. I am one of the target users, who doesn't know ( and really doesn't want to know ) about under-the-hood encoding, and just needs a simple tool to help with the job. And what a splendid job it does too :)
I am not sure if adding to this thread is appropriate so apologies if I am bloating things with my question.
Reading through the tutorial, I have a similar task I am trying to backup a series of 15 minute cartoons from a DVD. Using maximum quality created an AVI bigger than the source, so I then tried setting 50MB for a size ( so I could get all the episodes on a CD), but the quality was a bit poor with stereo VBR 128 sound.
The tutorial mentions setting 100MB as a sensible size and also setting a fixed width resolution at 512.
Just wondering how these values were determined ? Was it just experience, or are there certain resolution values that work best ??
I know that in the log I can look at the compressability percentage, but does this take into account any resolution setting ?
Thanks for any help.

It's just experience. I think what manono meant was that going below 512 makes picture too small and usually you'd want either fix the resolution or increase target size.

Yes, it does. You get compressibility for a chosen resolution (well first value after compessibility test is value for width of 640, but all the rest will be for resolution it'll be using). The final value which you should pay attention to is quality after first pass as it is the final quality you will get for the resolution it (or you if you fixed that) chose to encode with.

Hi nwpsys-
You're right. My explanation there was incomplete. It might have been useful if I had mentioned that the cartoons averaged about 7 minutes each. There were 14 of them, so 7 per CD and 2 CDs total and they looked fine. In your case, you might want to put 4 per CD at 175 MB each, or 3 per CD at 233 MB each, depending on how well they compress. A lot of the Bugs Bunny cartoons were old and grainy/noisy and didn't compress all that well. With experience you'll be able to have a look at the source material to get a rough idea of how they'll compress at a given resolution, and you'll then use the Compression Test results to verify that.
