I actually wouldn't. The number of frames don't matter that much as which frames are being analyzed. One "bad" frame can screw autocrop in some situations. If you try 9 or 11 frames it might work as well. Alternatively you can tune threshold parameter.

Yes. Exe installer and registration via inf file works ok on this machine.

Is the XviD Celticdruid a full install or just a patch?
Should we uninstall the Koepi build first?

It's the full encoder with an spartan .inf installer instead of a full installshield .exe installer - not a patch.
It will overwrite the 2 encoder DLL's in the system32 directory with new versions dated 4/10/2005:
xvidcore.dll
xvidvfw.dll
The decoder (xvid.ax) remains unchanged at 12/20/2004
You should NOT uninstall the Koepi build, otherwise you'll probably lose your decoder.

Then it may be called a update or a update patch even if no files are really patched but just overwritten :)
Seems like the celticdruid build are more memory and/or CPU hungry on my Intel system while doing the analyzing part just after DGIndex. Slowing down the whole system a lot just at that part.

CD builds contain everything these days (including xvid.ax dated the same day as the rest of dlls). If you don't like using CD build you can still use Koepi's. But if you use bitrate spike control option without ESS option the you have to use CD build because official beta 2 build produces non-compliant streams with DXN profiles which causes problems with hardware playback.

So what u are saying is that I do not need to install any XviD before I do the 2.06b install with CD? The decoder settings I can reach through "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe xvid.ax,Configure" anyway, or through WinAmp. I don't care about the system hungry part. Just thought people wanted to know ... ?
THX for everything len0x! Hope u are fine :)

All known problems seem to be solved. New exe installer from CD is bundled (it creates XviD startup group for decoder setting as well).
This version contains one undocumented hidden option: ".newsoftmatrix". When enabled in AutoGK's home dir, it uses ULR CQM from sharktooth - please give it a go and see how do you like it as the soft matrix.
P.S. This version might be the last one for while as I'm going on sabbatical (at least when it come to the new features for AutoGK).

New exe installer works, even on ancient Win98...
Configuration panel is not working correct coz the path to rundll32.exe on Win98 machines is -> C:\Windows. The installer uses ->C:\Windows\system\.
But this is just a blemish task. Everyone with a little knowlege can fix this by changing the desired path himself.
@len0x: Enjoy your sabbat :D

Has anyone tried new custom matrix yet? :)
In my tests I could barely see the difference from Jawors (more details and usually slightly higher compressibility, which is a good combination)

I use AutoGK alot and I really like the fact that its "simple" and meant to stay "simple".
One function that occasionally irritates me and I just wondered if it was for a reason or just an oversight is the Size Selection.
If you set it to Predefined (2CD's) 1400 it is set to auto-split your final avi file into two 700mb files. This functionality is fine, I know why people would want it.
HOWEVER, when I select "Custom" and set it to 1400, it still splits the files when its done. Can this split be removed? ie, if people want to split the files, use Predefined (2CD's) 1400, however if people just really want ONE 1400mb avi file, use Custom 1400 and NOT have it split.
If not, I suppose I could try Custom 1401 or 1399 if the trigger is the 1400 filesize.
Thanks. Great work on this, I use it alot.
ukb008
25th April 2005, 00:07
Yes, 1400 filesize is a trigger for the avi to be split. So, as you have said, you are to use 1399 or 1401 to avoid the split.

len0x's AutoGK FAQ says this about downloads:
0. Downloads
Main AutoGK download mirrors are protected from direct linking via "referrers" feature, so if you're getting an error saying something like "You don't have permission to access XXX..." make sure you enable referrers propagation in you browser/firewall/download manager.
You can, however, try this (http://dvd.box.sk/ddivx.soft.link.php?rid=8156) link for AutoGK update v2.07.

My 2 cents:
Just downloaded the two example avis mentioned in Sharktooth thread:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=93667
Have'nt got the time to encode samples on my own.
So thank you Sharktooth for your work.
Ok, I always favoured Jawors matrix on low bitrate, low resolution targets.
Sharktooth is using 1379 kbps, which is not a low bitrate in the 1CD field.
But anyway: What I can see from his test encodes. Plain surfaces with little different color changes are a lot more stable on Jawors matrix
(look at the forehead of our hero in the opening sequence).
Sharktooth matrix tends to be more jerkily.
While Jawors's blurs the image a bit, Sharktooth's sharpened it a bit.
Overall for everydays encodes I would still prefer Jawor's.
Especially on low motion, human skin focused stuff.
If I find the time to make some tests on my own ->700kbps ->512:*** res will be the target.
Cheers
Taurus
Edit: Sure Xvid decoder was used for comparision, no postprocessing.
Sharktooth
27th April 2005, 20:17
1300kbps were used coz the trailer is a bitch to compress.
As you can see the resolution is pretty low for that bitrate.
I'll add more encodes as soon as i can.

Hi,
Well towards the end of the tutorial the section that is BURNING TO DISK mentions right at the beginning about burning to a CD-R and makes no mention of burning to a DVD, thus the reason I asked the question. I realize that this isn't a burning application, so why do they mention burning the image to a CD.
SO which part of the turorial do you suggest I read. I've haven't done any DVD burning before but I read the thread where someone asked about changing the AR of the original DVD so as not to have black bars either on the top and bottom or sides and found it intriquing. I run a crt pj and it would be nice to not have to deal with different ARs all the time.
Thanks

Although Doom9's guides are quite comprehensive, not-too-technical and detailed, you can try these (http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/) guides or these (http://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?tools=141&madeby=&formatconversionselect=&howtoselect=%3B&orderby=Date&listall=1&hits=25&archive=0&listallusers=&search=Search+or+List+Guides) ones.
There are some excellent articles by Nicky Page here (http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/), not about GordianKnot, though, but I feel you will benefit by reading them.
Burning is mentioned because that's the most obvious step to take after the transcoding operation is over and you have a new video file in your hard drive. So unless you'd rather store that new video file in the hard drive along with others you will generate in course of time....
Regards.

Because---if you are going to make a DVD, that you wish to play in a standalone DVD player, AutoGK is not the program to use, not nearly! It creates DIVX or XVID AVI files, DVDs use MPEG-2 compression.
DVDs are most often the starting point for an AutoGK job (after decrypting to HD with DVD Decrypter), converted to a much smaller AVI file. If your goal is to make or copy a DVD, this isn't the program to use. You should investigate DVD authoring programs.
I guess the AVIs created by AutoGK could be burned to DVDs as data files, and they could be played from the computer just as they would from the HD. (But not from a "DVD Player".) To learn how to do that, look at the documentation that came with the burning software that came with your DVD burner. That's really nothing different than how you would do it with a CD.
To create a video DVD, however, playable on a DVD Player, is a totally different thing, and not something one would use AutoGK for.

.avi files generated by AGK can be written on DVDs in data mode. They can also be converted to DVD with avi2dvd (http://dl2.rapidshare.de/files/1463032/20702613/Avi2Dvd_Setup.exe) and written on DVDs.
In both cases WinXP should offer to play the files. A DVD-player will play the one generated by avi2dvd.

Actually most DVD Players nowadays do play xvid/divx within the avi container just fine. So if you have one of those players you just burn your avis in data mode put the dvd in the player choose the movie you want to watch and off you go.

Hi-
I have read the tutorial for GK but I can't tell if GK is for just burning CD's or will it do DVD's as well.
Wanna know why it doesn't mention anything about burning to DVD? Because at the time I wrote that section (at len0x's suggestion), I didn't have a DVD burner, and it never occurred to me that some people might prefer to put their AVIs on DVDR. An oversight on my part, since about 6 months later I finally got a DVD burner and could finally take advantage of some of the settings in AutoGK (1/4 DVDR, 1/3 DVDR, Quality 1-pass, etc.).
And as mentioned above, the principle is the same as burning to CDR; just burn as a data disc onto DVDR. Also as mentioned above, these AVIs burned as data on DVDR won't play in standard traditional DVD players. For that you'll need one of the increasingly common DVD/MPEG-4 players.
Actually most DVD Players nowadays do play xvid/divx within the avi container just fine.
Interesting you should say that, magere. Of all the people I know, none have a DVD/MPEG-4 player except me. None know how to encode for AVI. Very few even know what an AVI is. I guess it just depends on the circles you travel in. Ah, the joys of living in a small town.

Hi, Well thanks for everyones answers. What caught my attention was the fact that it was being used in changing the AR of the original DVD. Whether other programs will do that I don't know as I'm just starting to look into these programs and what they're used for and how they're used. I still haven't got a DVD burner so I'm just doing some preliminary reading.
I have a 8" crt projector and I would prefer to have it throwing 16:9 images instead of 2:35 : 1 images to avoid uneven wear on the tubes. But on the other hand I don't want to really cut out to much of the original image to achieve this. I haven't put up a 2:35 image to check just how much it would chop off the sides to bring it to a 16:9 size.
Thanks
ukb008
2nd May 2005, 02:25
I always thought 16:9 is a generic term meaning widescreen rather than a specific AR, embracing many AR figures, e.g.
1.78:1 (which is, literally, 16:9)
1.85:1
2.35:1
2.50:1
etc. etc. etc.
It would seem that you'd want to cut off the sides of a 2.35:1 picture to make it 1.78:1, in the process losing picture ares from from original frame. Is that it?
Regards.

Yes, thats about what I was thinking.

2nd May 2005, 05:55
So, you'd like to redirect the picture and the cinematography, losing one third of the picture in the process? You can do that in GKnot, but I, for one, would advise against doing it.
If you insist, here's a thread about it:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=93370
It takes a while before any worthwhile information comes out. According to one of the links in the thread, grey bars instead of black ones will prevent burn-in. It is possible to crop away the black bars and replace them with grey.

If you're using a HTPC to play back (and don't get me started on why someone would use anything else for re-encoded media!!) you could leave everything at its native resolution, and just use ZoomPlayer to playback, and set your #1 to #9 keys up with the appropriate amount of zoom. That's what I do. When the image is 1.78:1, I just leave the zoom at default 0% (=#0 key), and have the 1-9 keys set to go up in approximately 5% zoom increments. So for a1.85:1, just click the 1 key to zoom in by 5%; for 2.35:1, hit the #6 key go zoom by 30% and playback at ~16:9. Works like a charm, and it's truly painless with a remote (ATI Remote Wonder) that has the number keys on it.

About the standalone compatibility hidden option for MTK....
How much and in what manner, does it affect compressitility and quality?
What are the differences with previous versions?
There should not be any real difference. For MTK/Sigma new profiles from celtic_druid are used to enable VBV but allow custom matrixes (DXN profiles doesn't allow custom matrixes). For ESS - normal DXN profiles are used (and therefore no custom matrixes).
P.S. Its my official last post for the next two weeks.

You can download AGK (one version less than the most current) and the previous versions from this (http://dvd.box.sk/ddivx.soft.link.php?rid=8156) page. This (http://files.divx-digest.com/software/encode/AutoGordianKnot.2.07.beta.Update.exe) page gives you AGK v 2.07, and this (http://files.divx-digest.com/software/encode/AutoGordianKnot.1.95.Setup.exe) the latest stable release (v 1.95), as does this (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/autoGK.cfm) page.
v 2.08 cab be downloaded from this (http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/AutoGK-Auto-Gordian-Knot--beta-Download-7621.html) page
I hope this helps.

May be that new XviD bundled with AutoGK 2.08 have a profile bug:
everytime, it produces "packed bitstream" files... with AL@5 profile too!
I'm going to fix it with MPEG4modifier, but it's a little annoying :(
A question: I have a MTK player, but it doesn't like packet bitstreams (video is skippy, sometimes). Is it normal?

There is a big problem with autodetection of audio streams if they have different delays.
example:
http://nechto1.narod.ru/Video/VTS_02_1_split.VOB
it has 2 audio streams : second start only on 12-13th second.
AGK see only one stream.
P.S. len0x, can you make something like auto name in file mode - my DVD copies always lays on directories with next structure :
<DVD Name>\VIDEO_TS\*.vob -> <DVD Name>.avi
(not mine case, but VIDEO_TS may be absent).

I randomly get the Forbidden error messages too. I dont understand the recomended fix. What do you mean by:

Seems collisions exists between Celtic_Druid xvid GUI for MTK and AGK, MTK winning and imposing packed bitstreams inside AGK whatever profile.

Cannot test atm, but Celtic stated that "I think I will do a new build where pb just does whatever you set it to, since mine and several other MTK based players handle pb fine. "
I believe AGK can +now+ set or not set PB within Celtic's GUI, if not please consider not throwing the baby with the bath water (french saying).
I mean I'm sure a solution can be found with Celtic to offer the MTK profile to AGK users. So if you withdraw the .MTK option please make that backstep not permanent.
People wanting to test have to:
1/ update to AGK 2.08
2/ Use the new MTK GUI (download link above) by replacing the xvidvfw.dll located in Windows->system32 folder
3/ check the .ess and .mtk hidden options to see if it is still encoded with packed bitstream
4/Report back maybe in this thread http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=94221 to free the main thread
