Good, but i think further tweaking for compressibility without loosing sharpness is not possible (or there is only a very little space for improvement).

Normally I use a crystal clear sequenz, compare it to a mainstream one ,and as the salt on the butter, a real noisy clip.
Of course some real action and very slow movements...smoke and water..

AutoGK 1.73B sets wrong aspect ratio when you choose "Advanced Settings" -> "Fixed Width" -> 512 for PAL source.
512x384 would be correct. It sets 512x320.
This worked in 1.60.

Un-installed and re-installed AutoGK again. Works perfect now. Dunno what was wrong? ;)

You can, of course, use AGK for a range encode just by making a d2v project yourself, selecting the range while making it, and feeding it to AGK.

Just done a search on "range encode" without success :( , would appreciate more explanations on the concept, my level being newbie1 (don't even know when I will level up to newbie2 with so much to learn :D ).

Read the FAQ: Position 6.6
Of course, DVD2AVI is not used anymore. DGIndex is what it's called now. The FAQ is somewhat outdated at times, cos of often changes in program:D
When the encoding process starts and DGIndex launches, maximize it from the toolbar. Hit Escape, then F5, again Escape. Now you are able to scroll through the clip. Set your desired cut and trim markers and select Save Project under File Menu.
Make sure you overwrite existing *.d2v File.
AutoGk will go on after this little tweak as in normal operation
modus. Voila!

I could have searched a long time. So is "range" to be understood (my english is kind of rusty needs a lot of WD40 :cool: ) as something like: -subset(s) to select within a set of vobs- ?

Cosmetic issue with 1.73:
The log window doesn't scroll properly. Instead of the text filling each line of the window, with new text appearing at the bottom and old text scrolling off the top, new text sometimes re-writes the window, so that there is only one or two lines in the window.
Scrolling didn't always work correctly in 1.60 - sometimes at start-up the old text wouldn't scroll up, but once you used the scrollbars to have the last line of text appear at the end of the window, it would thereafter work correctly.

No big words: My favourite is V2. Beta4 adds some artificial sharpness
which might be useful at specific sources. But my overall impression is,
that V2 gives a more natural appeal to mainstream rips.
Even on high coloured (Nemo, Monster, Shrek)animatations the look is more shimmering and roundish, not so harsh as with beta4.
As always, comparision was made @ Q=2, 720:XXX, one pass, AutoGk-avs.
Didn't test it on television screen.
I think, Sharktooth does a good Job on Beta4, it will remain in my collection of useful matrices.(V2 too).
But on the other hand,if we look for a more universal matrice, V2 is the right way. Will do some more crosschecking with older matrices as well, if I find the time for new roundup.

I just encoded a movie using 1.73 with audio set at vbr 160. GS reports audio at 142 kb/s. Every other encode I can remember, audio was within a few kb/s of the rate I used in settings (unless .mono).

I think this is pretty normal behaviour for variable bitrate mp3.
If the source compresses this well, sometimes you get an undershoot.
Don't worry, the more bits and bytes are for the video ;)
If your concern is constant bitrate, just use cbr. For some standalone
players it's also a good decision. But remember, only in vbr mode bit distribution follows the source. So in low spectral parts bits are saved for high spectral consuming parts.
Is there any audible loss? Just trust your ears and don't count on numbers.

this was the first encoding I had done in which there was a meaningful gap between desired bit-rate and bit-rate as reported by GS (and I've encoded a fair amount with AutoGK). I can't A-B the original audio against the mp3, but speech usually requires a much lower bit-rate than music and this movie has very little music. Also the movie is older and is stereo (rather than 5.1). I'd like to make sure there's no issue, mainly for when I'm encoding more demanding material. I doubt len0x is changing the audio parts of the code, so I doubt there's an issue, but one never knows.

Oh well audio encoding is done thru LAME. So i doubt len0x will change it.
Now, beta4 and the sharpness "issue"...
Can you explain what does it mean "artificial sharpness"?
Maybe some screenshots would help...
However Shrek and Nemo are CG...
I have some doubts about "Monster"... is it Monster & Co. (CG) or Monster?
In the first case i agree with you. V2 has a softer coefficient scaling that's preferable for CG-cartoonish materials, while beta 4 is more film-oriented.
Maybe len0x could implement an easy workaround for those kind of movies (a hidden option) that will select a specific matrix (V2 for example) for that purpouse.

Sure it's CG (Monster &Co). English is not my native language, so sometimes definitions get mixed up ;)
As I stated before, it's my personal point of view. Beta4 is quite desirable at darkish "real" film content.
Did some short cuts on Matrix Reloaded, its quite different with V2.
On this special clips, beta4 is the winner.
But all depends on the eyes, viewing distance, monitor, etc.
I don't have a TFT screen, so it might be an error on my side.
About screenshots: Surely I have made a lot of them in the past.
But to my opinion they don't reflect visuality correct. If the quant distribution changes,
a picture in motion looks quite different compared to a static one.
I will do some more testing if you want me to do so.
Maybe a hint which source to use, so we can talk at even level.
There are no real bad matrices around, they are just different for special purposes.
So for AutoGk we have to find the universal one, which suits the needs for the Pro's and the Noobs.
That's why I normally tend to a more smoother matrice because of noobs
mistakes ;)
So, now I have to go out and do some real living.

Range means a specific chosen duration of movie material starting at a point of your choice.
Taurus is right. DVD2AVI is not the name of the program used now; it's DGIndex, although the resulting file extension is still d2v.
If you are new to AGK then this link (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=83382) may help you. You select the range in the DGIndex window that you open, by means of a slider at the bottom for positioning of your start and end points of the range, and then using [ and ] buttons for fixing those points. DGIndex.exe will then index only that part (range) of the movie for use in the AGK.

I thing I got it right now: changing the d2v file (inside dgindex) or editing it outside can trick agk. Two possible applications are
- changing the AR
- changing the range; for this one I have an immediate use for mpeg2 captured files. Instead of splitting the file(s) before feeding AGK, I should be able to do it via Dgindex inside AGK. Will try it with next capture.
I have more immediate concerns with my standalone going bork with a 2Gb encode of the LOTR2 (640 wide, vbr mp3 192kbs); Too much bitrate at 1h25mn during the attack of the wargs. I will test different possibilities and eventually come back to the forum for help. I already tried a smaller file (1.53Gb 608 wide vbr 160: works) but the goal is to retain same quality with a 2Gb or near file without the standalone freezing (The H&B 3220 has been tested Ok up to 6000kbs!). From what I have read, it may be related with the absence of the vbv buffer that is/will be included with the 1.1 xvid encoder. Wondering if using the 1.1 beta and checking the vbv box before doing a normal encode with AGK would do it?

No, Autogk resets all Xvid Settings to its desired status, but never had tested it on vbv.
And some small hint. Don't mess around with different versions of Xvid.
There was a time, when people complained about AutoGk not working right.
They got overshoots and undershoots, even lost their hair, cos of wrong versions and or mixed up installs. So just use it if you know exactly what your doing ;)

You can queue as many encodes as you want from there...and go to bed for three or mor days.

Version 1.74 is released and I hope you can post a lon from its encode on your source. You don't have to keep actual encodes - there should not be any drastic difference.

I made to encodings using the same settings in autoGK the difference - one was DivX 5.2 and one XviD(whatever is boundeled with Autogk) using version 1.73. i figured that i would get the same resolution in both but the xvid one was twice the size just thought that i would post the info in case it wasn't supposed to be that way. also the quality of the divx one i thought was a lot worse .. any way here are the two log files

My tests show beta4 has better (!!!) compressibility than V2 in 3 out of 4 encodes...

I don't know yet - I need to do more tests. I haven't really tested it on any cartoons (and probably will not be able as I don't own anything apart from Anymatrix, that can be a good test though). But I agree with Taurus on one thing - V2 is indeed very solid multipurpose matrix.

This is interesting. Its not in the loop yet, but may be will :)
I did not expect resolution to be increased along with matrix change (I think "Predicted comptest value is: 67.83" is simply not right for 592 width)
*Edit* i just realized what's wrong - quite a major bug there: matrix/resizer adjustments are lost after resolution adjustments. :( Stay tuned...

You can abort encoding - that's for sure. I do not have a solution yet though...

It does look that way as it was able to find the resolution between
512x384 and 592x448. What I found interesting is that it found it just after the first compressability test so no iterative search for the best solution went on.

Fixed resizing algorithm for both DivX and XviD - for ages when matrix/resizer adjustements were not the last ones - AutoGK would not correctly predict compressibility and reduce resolution anyway (it was like that from the beginning, but we noticed it only now when I have made adjustements after the first pass). :)

well, it was supposed to do that in the first place. But after matrix was switched - it was still quite a bit higher than required, so when resolution is increased - previously AutoGK "forgot" that matrix was switched and proceeds like it wasn't (that's why you ended up with higher resolution).
