I'm lost in that MB, Kb, KB, bytes stuff. :(

as far as I can tell, after using both + and - DVD formats, each disc can hold up to 4483mb of data... that or there's a problem with nero detecting actual size of the dvd  OR they can be doing the 1000k = 1mb / 1024k = 1mb 'trick' and advertise it as 4.7gb

That's interesting. I'll check that, but I was certain that I was able to burn real 4.7Gb...

As of now I assume DVDR size is 4812Mb. May be it is indeed less.

DVD+/- R as far as i know have a capacity of 4.36 Gb (4482mb)(4.7 is the bytes figure not taking into account 1024 per mb/gb etc etc)

Indeed after burning many (and I do mean many) dvds 4.36GB is the real size (occasionally you can get as far as 4.37GB but it's a bit dvd dependent).

Yes, and maybe 4460 MB for start the calculations, because some DVD's are crap and I think that remained 20 MB it's not a big deal for the whole quality of the novies.

1/3 = 1486 MB
1/4 = 1115 MB
1/5 = 892 MB
1/6 = 743 MB

But...
in DVD2SVCD at the Bitrate tab at CD size, when you choose DVD output they have:
4350 for DVD+R and
4480 for DVD-R
Also D2SRoba.

 "Lost in Translation" :D

View the thread AutoGK suggestions for DVD-R & DVD+R sizes. I have a Plextor PX-708A and all brands of DVD's I have tested have the same size (4483MB).In the thread you can find sizes from 1/1 to 1/30 DVD. Latest sizes can be useful to put entire TV series like Star Trek into one single DVD.I have tested it and it looks great.

@marteaga: Just open the idx file with SubRip instead of the the vobs. It rips the subs from the idx/sub file.

Or did I get you wrong?

I usually download them from here: http://www.divxsubtitles.net if I don't have the VOB's, or just don't feel like doing them myself.

thanks,

The way I did it was NOT naming the ".ivtc" file the same as the IFO file. I simply created a dummy ".ivtc" file (with exactly that extension and filename... it has no actual name). When I put it into my directory with the IFO and VOBs, it worked beautifully.

I hope that helps.

How do you create a file without filename in windows? I know that is trivial in linux and unix but windows complains about lack of filename.

P.S. I know how to create it in dos (or rather in the command prompt with "copy con .ivtc" but I don't think that is a trivial operation for a newby and althought the .itvc is not a newby option that doesn't mean it should be more complex than needed.

Here's the way I do it:

--Open notepad
--Save blank file as ".ivtc", including the quotes, into the folder.

If you don't use quotes, it'll save it as .ivtc.txt, and that's just no good.

There may be an easier way than this, but it definitely works.

This is easy. Just Unrar the .sub file and rename it to the name of the AVI file. Burn both files on a CD/DVD and voila...

I have done this about ten times with succes. Now if only Kiss would fix the subtitles timing problem...

I'm not sure that I follow this request. For a start AutoGK doesn't support HDTV resolutions/ratios. FPS is secondary issue here. Are you trying to feed in 60p or 60i source? lowering of FPS is due to ivtc, which is happening because of source being detected as FILM (log will tell you more).

Have used AutoGK a lot lately, never had problems, but now i've upgraded to 1.08 and selected 1/3 CD Size and got 116MB (instead of 233MB)...
I'm using the xvid rc3 (or did i just miss that this codec isn't supported with the filesize-setting yet?).

thx in advance

There may be an easier way than this, but it definitely works.

A few more steps at first will make the job much easier in the future:

1) Create a new text file anywhere you want (right click anywhere in an open folder, select "New" from the popup menu, pick "Text Document". That will create "New Text Document.txt"

2) Edit that text file with notepad and enter the following text on the first line:

echo >.ivtc

3) Close and save the text file

4) Rename that text file from "New Text Document.txt" to "IVTC.bat"

5) Now you can keep a copy of this batch file handy, and everytime you need the illusive ".ivtc" file, copy the batch file to the folder with your .vob's, double click it, and voila, your ".ivtc" file is created.

6) (Most important step) - Rant at Microsoft for removing functionality from their $500 OS's that was there in the $39 original version of DOS.

DVD-5
DVD-5 is a single sided single layer DVD that stores up to about 4.7 GB = 4 700 000 000 bytes and that is 4.38 computer GigaBytes where 1 kilobyte is 1024 bytes(4 700 000 000B/1024 = about 4 589 843KB/1024 = about 4485MB/1024 = about 4.38GB) . Video DVD, DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W supports this format. Often referred to as "single sided, single layer".

FWIW, I tried 1.08 beta on a 3GHz P4 with Hyperthreading turned on and it crashed right after double-clicking the AutoGK icon. I'll try 1.09 tonight and post the Dr. Watson text log dump file - it shows the instruction where it biffed.

Rebooting and turning HT off, AutoGK 1.08 worked just fine. I'm running Windows XP SP1 with current updates.

@lenox,

Thanks for the new features (.ivtc, .cartoon and .credits). Just a copule of small housekeeping issues:

1) I used .ivtc yesterday, works fine, and it's reported as being used in the log so you know it was correctly activated. But it gets activated _after_ analyzing the source, and determining the hybrid thresholds - if you are just going to override the hybrid deinterlacing, could you eliminate that step and save the time (it took about 10 minutes on an Athlon XP 2600+), or do you still need to do the analysis anyways?

2) I used the cartoon option today, and I'm _assuming_ that the flag was actually set and the feature enabled, but there's no mention of it in the log, so I don't really know if it was actually used or not. Could you report "using cartoon mode" or something similar in the log?

3) credits - didn't try them, but same comment as #2 if it's not reported in log.

Thanks again.

Did a simple HyperThreading disabled vs. HyperThreading enabled encoding speed test. Same source, same encode settings, XviD 1.0 RC3 codec. Output files where byte-for-byte identical.

Compression test
HT off: 16 minutes 54 seconds, 10.12 fps
HT on: 14 minutes 22 seconds, 11.91 fps

First pass
HT off: 1 hour, 34 minutes 16 seconds, 36.29 fps
HT on: 1 hour, 19 minutes 58 seconds, 42.78 fps

Second pass
HT off: 2 hours 22 minutes 34 seconds, 24.00 fps
HT on: 2 hours 2 minutes 33 seconds, 27.92 fps

Two things:

First, I tried to use the .credits file in two different movies, and both ended up oversized. 10 Things I Hate About You ended up at 735 MB, American Beauty ended up at 726 MB. I noticed no quality decrease in the credits, despite the fact that after 10 Things was finished encoding, the Xvid settings looked like this:

(I had American Beauty and 10 Things queued, so I didn't get a chance to check out the settings after American Beauty was done since it then jumped right into encoding 10 Things, but I assume they would've looked the same).

Anyway, I basically have no idea what happened. Here are random (and in all likelihood, useless) files from each encoding: American Beauty (http://home.columbus.rr.com/carraway6/americanbeauty/) and 10 Things I Hate About You (http://home.columbus.rr.com/carraway6/10things/).

The second thing has to do with the red/green ghosting that affects me and apparently no one else. :)

I've got a new wrinkle in the search for what causes it. I did two passes at episode S01E15 of Will & Grace, one with standalone support, one without.

Screenshots with ESS support:

And without:

In any event, in the AVS file that was produced by the ESS version, changing the second instance autocrop to a multiple of 8 eliminates the ghosting.

OK, done being annoying now. :)

Hi len0x

Seeing as you're in a feature-adding mood these days (:p) is there any chance of adding that no-audio option a few of us asked for way back? I've been using FairUse lately purely because I can make video-only encodes with it, but it would be nice to get back to using AutoGK again.
