I mentioned something in a tread that when selecting a custom 1400MB Custom file it split it into 2@700MB, was going for a single HQ file to edit in Vegas Video.

Hi guys, I've just discovered GKFI4U (pfwwee I did manage to write it :D )
thanks len0x, it looks like a (very) interesting piece of program.
Unfortunately.. the first problem I have is that the program crashes half of the times I start it (runtime error 12 before I can even see the interface...)
And when it starts properly, I can set all the options the way I want but when I click on preview or start, dvd2avi pops up but doesnt do anything. The log windows stays on
"Demuxing and indexing."
and well that's it...
Is there a problem with the dvd2avi version?

Do you have P4 with hyperthreading enabled ? if yes, then disable it and everything will be just fine...

Hi Lenox,
Well indeed you are right I'm testing it on a PIV hyperthreading machine. However I ve tested it after disabling Hyperthreading as well but it still behaves the same way.
And when i said it was crashing half of the time it's actually more crashing 9/10.
The exact error is a "GKitF4U application error: instruction at 0x....blabla. the memory couldnt be read
then clicking ok brings the runtime error 216.
About the problem with dvd2avi not doing anything when clicking preview or start, do you think it's related?
(well anyway at teh moment I cant run GKitF4U at all anyway)
sorry if I'm missing something here.

Strange. Exact the same error was reported to me three times and in all cases switching hyperthreading off fixed the problem. Are you disabling that on hardware level? (I'm not that familiar with how it works since I don't own PC with such CPU)
*Edit* do you have it overclocked ?

it's hard to tell... probably since noone who is able to run it properly had such an issue...
billou2k
27th November 2003, 18:40
Yes I've disabled it from the bios ( as I dont know any other way to do it )
and I checked in the task manager/performance that the cpu usage history was showing only one processor.
well anyway thanks for your help.
I'll tell you if I find something new.
(too bad I cant try it though:D)
edited: It's probably not overclocked as its a dell system and I havent touched it at all.

Sorry - just checking the obvious. You get the dvd2avi appearing on the task bar right ? What happens if you do a right-click->restore on it ? Do you see the main dvd2avi gui ?
billou2k
27th November 2003, 19:05
hi Wertert,
well when I bring dvd2avi to the front it's got no video loaded.
when I manually load the vobs in it, it then starts the creation of the d2v file on its own.
but as soon as its finished gkfastit4u logs an "Exception: ...tmp\test1.idx cannot be found"
The test1.d2v file is there but not the .idx
And about the program crashing sometimes. When it happens it looks like reinstlaling the update to 0.48 fixes the problem...but if i close it, next time I start it: it will crash again. (and so on) strange...
I hope I am not making an obvious mistake
sorry for the troubles guys...

Just wondering : When the program analyzes the source, and it thinks it is interlaced, why does it start to analyze a second time ? I just see this happening with Band Of Brothers dvd 1

First, if you're talking about info window of DVD2AVI then don't mind what it shows to you. For PAL sources it's wrong in 50% of the cases.
More important is what you see - do you see interlacing if you scroll through the movie in DVD2AVI ?
P.S. and please post you log file with percentage of interlacing found...

Hi len0x,
Good to see the name AutoGK was accepted. :).
BTW, When is AutoGk going to support DivX 5.1.1, I'm eagerly waiting for it. Do you think we don't need any testing with DivX codec ? ( As next version will 0.5 and obviously above beta status ? )
len0x
28th November 2003, 12:20
OK, I solved the problems with using softer resizer twice as well as probelm with closing the application (now you will not be able to close application while job is running at all, you will have to abort it first).
Any more bugs ? :)
About divx5 support - be patient and don't ruin the surprise :)

New version 0.5 solved the problem of fastgk not finding the idx. (good)
However I still need to load the vob files manually in DVD2avi... is that normal?
And I can only run fastGK one time. As the next time it will report the error i posted earlier. The only way to get rid of it is to reisntall fastgk...
Apart from that it looks good!

ok, this is getting a bit ugly. very small percentage of interlacing there. you can do the following: open up _.avs (from tmp dir) with VDubMod and go to the frames which are detected as interlaced to see what's wrong with them. To find out which frames are detected as interlaced open interlace.log file and the number of the rows which has "true" as a first string will be interlaced frame numbers.

Vobs are picked up automatically from IFO name actually. It's all tired up with original DVD structure... May be in the future I will allow more flexible input structures, but it's too much hassle at the moment and I have much more important features to implement...

That is very possible, so I'd say go on with deintrelacing as usual. Deinterlacer that I'm using is quite good in a sense that it won't be doing deinterlacing of progressive parts of the picture (it will slow encoding a bit, true, but at least you won't have any interlaced frames in the output)

I did but i am not very happy with the ouput(First time with your program though :) ). I am encoding it with gordian knot know, to see if i can get better results. I see Autogk uses a softer matrix, with looses a lot of filmgrain. I exactly like the filmgrain in this movie as it also shows a lot of detail. I am doing it with the lancoz resizer now, to see if i can get better results. Will report back about this. :)

I've made a test version (call it RC1):
http://len0x.leffe.dnsalias.com/AutoGK.0.5.rc1.zip
should fix these problems:
- double usage of softer resizer removed
- crash on exit while encoding fixed
- possibly scroll arrows will not disappear in the log window anymore (plz test)
have a go with it and notice that exe file name is changed. that is why I'm not planning to made RC installer (only final version will have it).

heyho, just found another little bug. i've encoded star wars episode 2 pal r2. the dvd has forced subs, which arent manchend in the ifo, but which are recognized by DVD Decrypter, so there are listed in the stream info file. the subs are propably extracted by vobsub, but weren't encoded into the video, as selected in the gui.
Well, you've selected subtitles with index 11 (0x2A). You're saying that they were extracted into tmp directory right? Can you post the *.idx file then (just until timestamps start)
And btw, forced subs usually have very few lines in them. So are you sure that they are absent? (you can always do preview to find out if they are displayed or not)

hey, len0x, it's just about that, everything is right with the sub extracting, etc., but the thing is: star wars e2 is a mutli angel film, and as you know, you've got to extcrat the right angel with dvd decrypter. well the thing is, that subtile extraction is done with that pgced vobs, which makes the subtitles async! well, i've found my subs, with approx. 1.30min. delay...
well until know i'll try to replace the subs with the right ripped subs after the d2v file creation. so you see, the problem is, that the ifo isn't matching to the vobs after the pgc ripping...
