That is debatable imho
Well, I did some careful listening tests before I decided to take the DTS tracks to encode -> mp3.
The main reason is, that sometimes the DTS tracks are mastered different then the ac3, more dynamics, more transparency.
But anyway, I'm still satisfied with ac3 muxing in AutoGk.
'caus this is what most people will stick to if they want good quality.
And I wasn't the one, who wished DTS to be implanted ;)
Have a nice day

It has happened twice now, that AGK gets through a couple items on my job queue, and I notice that it hangs at the "Demuxing and Indexing" step.
I couldn't find a log, but this seems to be the pertinent info from the log window:
[5/27/2004 4:31:49 PM] Job finished.
[5/27/2004 4:31:49 PM] AutoGK 1.25
[5/27/2004 4:31:49 PM] OS: WinXP (5.1.2600).2

[5/27/2004 4:31:49 PM] Input dir: E:\****
[5/27/2004 4:31:49 PM] Output file: E:\****\******.avi
[5/27/2004 4:31:49 PM] Audio: English
[5/27/2004 4:31:49 PM] Subtitles: none
[5/27/2004 4:31:49 PM] Codec: XviD
[5/27/2004 4:31:49 PM] Target quality: 80%
[5/27/2004 4:31:49 PM] Started encoding.
[5/27/2004 4:31:49 PM] Demuxing and indexing.
That was 2 1/2 hours ago, and nothing else has happened. The DVD2AVI window is open, but doesn't appear to be doing anything.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

The same happened to me last night: Two jobs, same movie, first one perfect, second one did nothing. DVD2AVI was open but there was no d2v file in the temp directory.
There is a log for the second job but it ends with the "Demuxing and Indexing" line NMachiavelli reports.
EDIT: It could be relevant that both AVIs were supposed to be created in the same directory (hence having the same temp dir).

Always create a new folder for a new rip. Normally DVDDecrypter creates one too.If you want to use same files in a queue, you have to copy them to a renamed empty folder of your choice first.
And make sure you're using DVDDecrypter in ifo mode with ''Include PGC and Angle number checked in settings -> Ifo mode''.
But please post your results, caus there's a new version of DVD2AVI(not the latest)used in AutoGk.
@NMachiavelli
Why is the DVD2AVI window open during indexing and demuxing?
Normally it's runnning in silent mode, just the switch in the taskbar is showing it's running. Did you fiddle around with the settings?
By the way, did you try to start DVD2AVI manually on it's screen?
Would be interesting to know what's happening.
How to do this can be read in the AutoGK Faqs.

Actually I have the same problems every once in a while (once a month may be) when DVD2AVI failes to actually open input files (if you try pressing F5 you'll see they are not loaded). Just requeing the same job solves the problem.

Hello again.
@Taurus:
The movie was the same. I wanted two versions (1 CD & 1 DVD-R) of the same movie. And DVDDecrypter has that configuration. You mean I need two copies of the VOBs in different places?
@Len0x:
Curious: I pressed F5 in DVD2AVI and the movie was there. Maybe from the first time (remember it was two encodes of the same movie)

Would it be at all easy to put in a "requeue" button, in addition to the abort button? Just curious. Oh, and I'm getting this problem once ever 4 or 5 jobs, not just once a month. :)
Thanks.

Re: DVD2AVI weirdness
Did some excessive testing on the mentioned behaviour.
What I did: Ripped a small part, about 100Mb with DVDDecrypter.
Tried this one with different settings(Video bitrate,resolution,mp3,ac3,etc.)on 8 queues.
All to the same folder, sure with different filenames for the avi.
And guess what? Everything worked out fine.
So this is strange.
Are you sure you use DVD2AVIdg provided with the AutoGk installer?
Never had this problem, only on older betas of DVD2AVIdg.
Cheers

edit: @ydobon
Curious: I pressed F5 in DVD2AVI
If the preview (F5) worked, did you try to save the *.d2v file (F4)?

Yep. Clean install. Uninstalled everything related when 1.25 came out before installing it.

My AVIs are always for different directories.
I have no idea why the DVD2AVI window is open, but it is in the background behind my AGK screen.
I haven't tried to start DVD2AVI manually, I'll check it out when I get home.
Yes, everything was from the AGK1.25 installer.
Thanks

Hi len0x,
thanks for this great tool.
but I miss one or two features (it should be understood as a help not as a give-me-give-me request;-) :
- a *.wmv,*.mov, *.mpg/*.mpeg, Matroska, XCD, Ogm INPUT support will be great, to create easy stand alone able content out of recent created files. Further in this case it will be usefull when you put a merge option on the mentioned file formats.
- manuel crop.
- next to the video info a duration (length) of the video output (source infomation bar).
- by the infomation and help section a implemented help/tutorial (sure you've to often update it because of adding new features to the application, its only for the road map).
- option to save jobs (I sometimes lose my batch list because of a pc crash)
thx
thats all
cu Salvatore
ps: i know that some points are requested earlier, but I forgot which ;-)

As you see I stopped doing a beta every two days since we have a stable version now, but this doesn't mean nothing is being developed in AutoGK. In fact I have already list of 10 items in the history for 1.30 beta and probably a couple of other things will be done before it gets released.
Major change is that AutoGK is no longer able to parse IFO files, so every single ripping method apart from IFO mode of DVDDecrypter will no longer work. I'm very tired of supporting this feature and it was not intended to work in the first place. As a compensation there is already working support for direct opening of MPEG2 files (VOB/M2V/MPG). As soon as I learn more about transport streams - they should be supported as well (coz DGMPGDec supports them).
I will probably not gonna go through with autosize feature yet. I had some thoughts and there is too much variables to decide optimal strategy for FitCD-like algorithm (audio type, resizer, matrix, number of CDs and resolution). Although we can discuss this here.

It's not ways off, but its not gonna be in 1.30. Next beta will have almost everything I wanna put into next stable release, so it all comes down to how fast its gonna be stabilized. After that I have plans for only two big features:
- config file
- DV input support (via dshow, so more thing are gonna be suppored here)
Second feature will require quite of bit of time, so config file will come first. I'll start another thread about it soon. Althouh I have some doubts that is is a good idea since everyone will jump in with suggstions (more like requirements) and it'll be difficult for me to justify why I'm putting one parameter in, but not another. But I am determined to put in only vital options first.

Thx, that sounds great!
It will definitively be usefull feature for many (and away goes the last reason for me to use DrDivx).

I was in a brainstorming mood and came with solution for that weird DVD2AVI launch problem. Two options:
- have a timeout(30-60min) after which job is aborted on indexing stage and next job is executed
- have the same timeout and try to re-launch DVD2AVI if that usually fixes a problem.
Second option is more difficult and if there is a real problem wastes twice as much time, so I'm more into first option. What do you think?
ydobon
1st June 2004, 17:03
What about an intermediate option?
- After the timeout move the job to the bottom of the queue (instead of aborting it) and execute next job.
Or instead of using such long timeout, how about basing the decision on the existence of some file after a shorter (5min?) timeout.

Is there a way for me to try this manually to see if it fixes the problem? Every time I close the DVD2AVI window manually, the job aborts.

I was in a brainstorming mood ;) :D
Nice idea.
I prefer version 1, but 30 minutes should be enough.
Never had DVD2AVIdg running as long as that for indexing and all audio streams demuxing, on a mainstream pc (AMD 2600 XP).
But we should take care on slower machines, so setting the timegate higher is maybe favourable.
Anyway, this doesn't solve the problem a few members mentioned, but at least they get their queues finished, even there is one rip missing after that.
Go on.

this is very difficult to do since
- currently job manager doesn't know what caused abortion
- we might get infinite loop on the last item :)

true, and the best thing is - it costed me three lines of code :)
Time out will be 30 min for a start. (and there will be a clear indication that it was aborted due to timeout)

It only happened me once, but I seem to remember that DVD2AVI was open but no *.d2v file was created. Wouldn't that be clue enough?

Ooops. True. Mmmm... you could always mark the job as "already moved to the bottom" and abort it the second time.
Just brainstorming here :)
Regards.
P.S. I've noticed that AutoGK resets the audio track and subtitle track when I select a source dir. Would it be difficult to maintain the selection if such tracks exist? I think it would be extremely useful when recoding TV episodes...

I always seem to get ahead of myself. I did 2 encodes last night. One was with subtitles and the other was not. The one with subtitles I encoded with cartoon mode. I came in and checked them both and they looked good so I deleted all the temp files and unfortunatly all the logs. After I looked a little more closely I realized that the subtitles from the first encode were also on the second movie. I do not know if I would be able to tell you anything else to help you out with this, but both of these movies were on different physical drives and had completly different names. let me know if there is anything else that I can give you to help you out, and if this is a known problem, I havent heard about it.
Thanks
B
Actually I just realized that I have the log from the first movie, but I bet the one you need is the second encode.

Hopefully someone out there can point me in the right direction, i've searched the forum with little luck. Here is the situation; I currently use AutoGK 1.25 to encode my dvd rips. Playback is thru Xbox Media Center which uses Mplayer. Mplayer was using FFMPEG to decode XVID avi's but recently switched to XVID 1.0. My problem is now that it's using 1.0, I get tons of dropped frames which results in very choppy playback, especially during fast action scenes.
I would think that this would be an Mplayer issue, but I have other XVID avi's that I didn't encode with AutoGK that play fine. Unfortuantely I can't recall what ver I used for them.
I'm using AutoGK ver 1.25. I always encode Target Quality %85, with ac3 track. Thats it. Can someone point me in the right direction to what would cause dropped frames on playback.
Thanks!!

Well, almost like DVD then. Can you produce 50 fps sources or sources with higher resolution ?

I have not announced it yet coz its really more of an alpha (since I changed quite a lot), but you can grab it here:
http://len0x.btothec.com/AutoGordianKnot.1.30.beta.Update.exe
Change log (bigger than ever):
- DUE TO MISUSE OF AUTOGK WITH UNSUPPORTED RIPPING TOOLS, IT'S NO LONGER ABLE TO PARSE IFO FILES, SO ONLY DVDDECRYPTER IN IFO MODE CAN BE USED FROM NOW ON
- AutoGK works now with DGMPGDec 1.0.9
- removed test for alternative field order for PAL sources
- video type and AR is taken from D2V file now
- added support for direct opening of MPEG2 files (VOB/M2V/MPG/MPEG). Enabled by CTRL-F12
- fixed problem of cutting off last few seconds of video during splitting
- installer fixes AVI file association to prevent "Error opening AVI" after comp test
- added option to rip all subtitle streams (only when using external subs)
- message "WinRar is not found" is no longer displayed when internal subs are used
- improved parsing of stream info file
- comp test limit is reduced to 65% for XviD 1.0 (resulting in higher resolution output)
- added more debug info into logs
- indexing/demuxing step has now timeout of 30 min after which job will be aborted to allow the queue to proceed
- subtitle splitting step has now timeout of 5 min after which job will proceed anyway
- bitrate for mono encoding is now always half of the bitrate set on advanced options window
- resizing algorithm chnaged heavily to accomodate upcoming support for different input sources (ITU standard is no longer applied)
- field order, aspect ratio and resolution is now taken during encoding from D2V file
- possible width is increased to 1920
- max quality and target quality modes are using source input width and not predefined width of 720/704
If there are some thing that are not working for DVD sources please reply asap. For file mode it is expected to have some problems as I'm working on that as well as on proper HDTV support.

@lenOx
I'm really impressed.
What a todo list !
I think it's great that you cut out ifo parsing, coz most of the so called bugs were because of this.
I'm experimenting with DGMPGDec* from the day it was available.
On standard rips it works ok for me. Haven't had the chance to try it on more exotic stuff.
So it's now for the beta(alpha)testers to find out.
Happy testing!

The "WinRAR is not found" doesn't appear, but the subtitles in the final .avi doesn't appear too!
What kind of player I must use? I prefer WMP 9, Media Player Classic, PowerDVD...

WinRar is not needed for internal subs, so its unrelated. Do you have any subs entries in the *.idx file (in the end)? Make sure you didn't tick forced subs only options...

@Mc|Atm0s What kind of player I must use? I prefer WMP 9, Media Player Classic, PowerDVD...
I assume Gabest's VobSub 2.23 is installed correctly.
In Media Player Classic just right click in the movie.
In the filter section choose DirectVobSub.
Make sure there is a mark at 'Show Subtitles'.
Go to 'Properties' and tick 'Load when needed'.
Mark the others to your desires.
I've just made some more tests on Beta 1.3.
Everything works ok.
Are there any *.sub, *.idx, or *.rar files in your rip folder?
If not, please report back.
Cheers

Taurus,
in Media Player Classic (6.4.8.2) I don't have DirectVobSub as filter...I've tried to load it from the option (C:\Windows\system32\dvobsub.ax ? ) but it doesn't appear in the filter section
In the .vob rip folder I don't have files .idx, .sub. and .rar

@ Mc|Atm0s
I assume you are using WinXP.
To get access to the VobSub settings dialog you can go there by either : Start ->Programs ->Vobsub ->DirectVobSub Configure.
Or browse to the folder which contains your Vobsub Files, normally C:\Programs\Gabest\Vobsub\DirectVobSub Configure and open it from there.
To make it clear, the files I mentioned in my former post should be in *\gk_temp.
And as I can see, they are there.
So this should be an incorrect assignment of the player.
And keep your hands of from WMP9  It's a resource hog.
Hope this will help
Taurus
Edit: @ Mc|Atm0s Sorry, my mistake. Sure it's *\gk_tmp.

@ Lenox:
Just a small thing, when encodíng a single file, the log says "Input dir: ...". I think the log should display the source file!
And one more question: to test the single file mode I encoded the .vob-file from the last ifo-rip. Audio was LPCM and normally no problem. When encoding only the .vob-file, after audio-encoding autogk says "EXCEPTION: Audio is not found. Encoding aborted."
Is that normal???
Thanks, this program is great!!!

When dealing with VOBs you better off using DVD mode as AutoGK cannot know what type of audio is there. Usually it gets demuxed ok, but in case of LPCM is has to be decoded, which result in different command line to DGMPGDec...

Hey, I'm trying to encode several episodes of an animated show. After the rip the .VOBs come out at around 980 megs, and I'm trying to get them down around 233 megs to fit 3 per CD. However, they're all coming out around 140. Is this typical? The video does seem to be a little blockier than I'd like, and I figure the extra 100 megs would probably help. Any advice on this? Thanks.
Oh, and AutoGK rocks. Thanks for putting so much time into it.

please always state clearly what kind of sources you're trying to convert(type of the file with extension, audio type, fps, resolution, AR).

Are you sure, you made a mark at 'custom size' in AutoGk?
What audio, which resolution?
Please post your log file next time.
Otherwise we are only into guessing what's happening.

can you add an option (maybe another hidden option) to force b-frames. on my encodes autogk usally switches them off but i would really like to have them, because for me even at high bitrates they make the movie look better.
edit: i am using xvid
