Yeah -- I just responded in the other thread. I guess VBR is a feature request then. :P Add another () bubble choice, won't you please len0x? ;)

You can first come up with sintax for real VBR 320 Kbps lame command line...
FSB-SPY
19th May 2004, 17:22
switchs.html // lame.zip
* -V 0...9 VBR quality setting
Enable VBR (Variable BitRate) and specifies the value of VBR quality.
default=4
0=highest quality.
lame -V 0
Should yield quality scaleable up to 320.

I guess you cannot guarantee bitrate in that mode anyway, so its pretty much equivalent of having VBR 0-9 quality selection, which I don't really think we need here (meaning I don't plan to implement since you are the only one who seems to be encoding at 320kbps).

???
If we wanted 320 at all times, we would do CBR (which we can, as of right now with AutoGK). The point of this is for LAME to encode the file with only the needed bits to achieve transparency. Or am I missing something? :)
ex. Album rip of Paul Oakenfold's Bunnka:
-- CBR 320 = 118 MB (124,440,576 bytes)
-- VBR 320 = 91.3 MB (95,821,824 bytes)
Both sound exactly the same; but with one (VBR) we used sufficient bits (less than 320) to satisfy transparency. Less size; same quality. This adds up of course and gives us more room for video in the end.
Edit: I guess ultimately what would be best is to have a field where you could manually type in the lame string (ie. GordianKnot), and may or may not make that application obsolete if this is added to its auto counter-part. :P Or if easier, maybe just added to the hidden features array? .mp3 file with the lame syntax line?

320 kbit is such an insanely high bitrate
Baaah! All this talking about high bit rates just scares me.
When I'm really in need in keeping highest possible quality, I just take the ac3 or dts file and merge it with the video. What are the benefits to recompress a lossy source? You will only get much worse files.
Fiddling around with BeSweet settings will give you much more quality boosts than just raising the bitrate.
After all, mp3 ist just fine, if you're in need for small file sizes.
But if you gain to highest quality, there are other ways.
Just my opinion, doing mp3 encoding from almost when it all began...
Heh, heh, and I'm a real old guy.

Audio out of sync...one more time
Just want to report a minor bug(?)with new DVD2AVIdg.
When I stop DVD2AVI loaded by AutoGk to cut off some unwanted elements at the beginning of a movie (looooong intro), afterwards the final encode is terribly out of sync on audio. 250 ms delay.
While doing a normal rip (keeping the long intro)everything is ok.
DVDDecrypter shows 0ms, DVD2AVI on normal encode, too.
But after cutting out the intro it shows 246ms delay.
Having done similar tasks on other movies with older versions of DVD2AVI,I never had a problem. Everything was in sync.
So for now I would like to warn everybody, not to cut at the beginning of a movie, or your many hours work :D will be spoiled down the river.
Sure you can repair such minor disadvantages, but for newbies it ain't fun.
Maybe somebody can confirm my observations ?
Cheers

@lenox
The problem I encountered in my last post only happens to Beta 1.23.
'caus I have more PCs running, I didn't update that particular machine.
After updating to 1.24 everything is in sync, even at heavy cropping in DVD2AVIdg.
Must have been a bug in former Beta of DVD2AVIdg.
By the way, did same tests on new DVD2AVIdg 1.3.0 RC5.
Everythings worked our fine with this release candidate too.
So sorry, if I messed up things a little, but it's hard to stay on top of the line, when there is an update twice a week :D :D .
Have a nice day

This time its serious. Apparently AutoGK site completely stalls all other services (high apache load) on the server of my hosting provider(its not dedicated server), so they suspened my account there. Its gonna be moved to another server tomorrow (where there are less users) but if that's gonna continue then I need to look at other hostings.
Any recommendations (requirement is phpNuke preinstalled)?

Dear len0x,
I have Win2003 fast web/ftp server and I would glad to provide space to host AutoGK binaries for free...
If you are interested in such proposal, could you please contact me by email _sergey@knyazev.com_?
Thank you for best software!
Best wishes,
Sergey

Dear All,
Could you please help me with tech question?
I use AutoGK 1.24 and faced with problem - ~15% of DVD was converted and process finished "successfully"...
It happened with one DVD only which contain a lot of VOBs:
VIDEO_TS.BUP,VTS_01_0.BUP,VTS_02_0.BUP,VTS_03_0.BUP,VTS_04_0.BUP,VTS_05_0.BUP,..........VTS_16_1.VOB,VTS_17_0.VOB,VTS_17_1.VOB,VTS_18_0.VOB,VTS_18_1.VOB,VTS_19_0.VOB,VTS_19_1.VOB,VTS_20_0.VOB,VTS_20_1.VOB,VTS_21_0.VOB,VTS_21_1.VOB
Could you please tell me, how to force AutoGK to convert full DVD?
PS When I tried to use DVDDecrypter and set splitting to 1Gb, I also have part processing only...
Thank you!
Best wishes,
Sergey

AutoGK can only process one PGC at a time (and that program chain has to be ripped in IFO mode of DVDDecrypter). Potentially if you name your vobs like this: vts_01_1.vob...vts_01_21.vob - they will be picked up automatically (providing that you don't need subs for them).

This will definitely introduce some severe sync issues though...

Dear len0x and All!
I'm admiring with very high-quality clips which produced by AutoGK :)
And I'd like to achieve the same quality in my DV (from camcoder) encoding...
Could you please tell me, what XVID option should I use (e.g. in virtualdub) to produce the same quality?
I used DOOM9 XVID guide, but I always get big, interlaced and medium-quality files :(
Thank you in advance,
Best wishes,
Sergey

A big "Thank you", for the release of your 1.25 stable release!
I wonder how far will you go.
So we take a nip of champagne and lay back (for a little while).

is it just me or does the movie - encoded in divx 5.1 - looks better than with xvid 1.0 ? the side effect is, that it takes some more time to encode with divx 5.1 (around 25-30 frames/s with divx 5.1 while 45-50 fps with xvid 1.0)

cannot reproduce...on my system divx 5.11 is faster than xvid 1.0
divx ~ 30fps
xvid ~ 25fps

5.1 IS a lot slower that 5.1.1 that should be used. Regarding look - its very subjective. Most of the ppl find it the other way around though.

oh ok... well don't you think updating the gknot package to the newest software developments would be great to keep it alive?? shouldn't be too much work i guess, but on the other hand i simply do not have the knownledge to make such a judgement - otherwise i'd immediately offer to do it myself...
edit: damit... how could i say this at all. it's almost up to date anyway! and i guess i should be able to update to the latest version of dvddecrypter, besweet, dvd2avidg and decomb by myself... sorry for bringing this up at all...
anyway, about autoGK, are you planning on adding DTS support?! or is this too complex atm (i mean with all the requirements - gabests filters have to be installed and you need a copy of Intervideo WinDVD Platinum) - hmmm... i guess i just answered my own question there :P
cheers

PS: if there's anything i can do (as a "not- really programmer") to help you with gknot, pls tell me!

I didn't say anything about updating. Just about developing (that is really different thing) :)

Btw, latest DVD2AVIdg has issues with R4R, so if I update it then I will have to remove R4R from the package... BeSweet and DVDDecrypter should be no big deal to update.

anyway, about autoGK, are you planning on adding DTS support?! or is this too complex atm (i mean with all the requirements - gabests filters have to be installed and you need a copy of Intervideo WinDVD Platinum) - hmmm... i guess i just answered my own question there :P
Actually latest AC3filter is supposed to decode DTS - I just not sure how I'm gonna mux it...

it's 2.7Mb oversize which was made worse by the split (See FAQ why). I wouldn't worry about it as you can always split it into 701/702Mb by yourself.

BTW another possibility is to use Media Player Classic as it natively supports DTS decoding in newest versions (among a lot of other formats): http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/

with some movies, I found setting it to 1399 as size fixed it, then I'd split manually later (sometimes the 700mb mark was during a conversation)

thanks, but we weren't talking about muxing a dts track into the avi! this has been possible for quite a while now! But honestly do you really want to mux a 768 kbit soundtrack into your 1 Mbit movie?? don't think that makes much sense ;)
anyway, at least i myself was talking dts to mp3 transcoding - i just got the idea because i encountered a dts only DVD (no commercial DVD).
anyway, i guess that is not truly in the scope of autoGK anyway...

Wow DTS takes 768 kbit  And AC3 takes only something between 300-400 kbit if I remember correctly? And does DTS really add noticable quality at all?
I agree with you, DTS muxing then does not make a lot of sense (perhaps for freaks who take a whole DVD for 1-2 films).
But I stay with 1 CD Backups and mp3 anyway :D

no chance to fit a dts track with reasonable video quality on there... ;)

As I haven't seen any - its safe to say that it's not common yet and in such rare cases GK can be used on them. If situation changes then I can have a look at them again. :)

As I haven't seen any - (DTS)...
Well, as I'm collecting some music dvds, many of the new releases are DTS encoded.
The audio is mostly excellent, so I always take the DTS track for my rips and make a mp3 file at about 196kb (varies on video lenght).
There's a noticable difference in quality compared to the ac3 file ripped from same dvd.
But this is just for the ones who can hear the grass grow...:D :D
Anyway, keeping the ac3 file is next to being perfect, so to use mp3 is mostly a decision for higher video bitrate.
DTS -> MP3 is simple if you put all needed stuff together.
But I remember what a hazzle it was not so long ago....
Cheers

Oops, my last post was a little misleading.
Sure, there are always ac3 tracks, as usual.
What I was trying to say, the DTS tracks are mostly the better sounding ones, so I take them if I encode to mp3. Better source, better final solution, better sound (on mp3).
At normal videos I wouldn't care too much about it.
Next time I will be more careful with my words..
English is not my native language, so please forgive me.
Cheers

That is debatable imho. I have no doubts that DTS itself may sound better than AC3, but the ratio of compression to MP3 is soo high, that I don't think you'll be able to tell the difference from resulting MP3 (although I personally did not do any listening tests).
