[/list=a]

a) you need to demux the audio anyway (preview does't generate audio), so there is no harm in indexing again. (demuxing is more expensive process anyway)

b) there is no more ITU :) if you read the label now it's "keep perfect 4:3 ratio" which means "don't follow ITU standard", which is basically reverse of GK check box.

c) good question - I think it's official name of the process :)

Ah, you tricked me. The history says "renamed" not "transformed". ;)

Perhaps you might want to rephrase it, "Keep perfect aspect 4:3 ratio" may lead users to think it's a good thing.

Hi Len0x, I'm trying to replicate it now, but I can't. Yesterday, when I had that problem, I selected "Deinterlace source" 'cause my vob, althought DVD2AVI doesn't detect it as interlaced, has the typical interlacing artifacts.
So I have just deselected "deinterlace source", start my tests and everything seems to be OK. These has been the logs:

(15 megs in custom size)

[03/11/2003 21.58.19] Started encoding.
[03/11/2003 21.58.19] Demuxing and indexing.

[03/11/2003 21.59.35] Video Size: 12758768

[03/11/2003 22.00.53] New width is : 576
[03/11/2003 22.00.53] Predicted comptest value is: 73.51
[03/11/2003 22.00.53] Running first pass.

Then I select 10 megs:

[03/11/2003 22.02.35] Started encoding.
[03/11/2003 22.02.35] Demuxing and indexing.
[03/11/2003 22.02.44] Encoding audio.
[03/11/2003 22.03.53] Found 5964 frames
[03/11/2003 22.03.53] Audio size: 2731280
[03/11/2003 22.03.53] Overhead: 238592
[03/11/2003 22.03.53] Video Size: 7515888
[03/11/2003 22.03.53] Running compressability test.
[03/11/2003 22.05.14] Compressability percentage is: 35.67
[03/11/2003 22.05.14] New width is : 448
[03/11/2003 22.05.14] Predicted comptest value is: 74.24
[03/11/2003 22.05.14] Running first pass.

Then I've tried to select "Deinterlace source" and start again a 15 megs, but now the video size remain 7515888. So I think there's something wrong anywhere, something not reset to default, don't really know. The fact that yesterday CT gave me a 640 horizontal resolution (it was first with a 17 megs custom size) proves that I'm not crazy or drunk! Note that I always delete the content of the tmp directory before re-starting.

May I also suggest to automatically delete the content of this tmp directory? One time I try to encode my 150 vob AFTER trying to encode a full film. Well, the ac3 encoded to mp3 was the one from the film, not from the small vob!

I hope this prog will grow fast and better, I really like the philosophy behind it. And since I have only a PIII@500, I'd like to be allowed to use also Divx5 ;)

Bye, Yotsuya.

Edit: tried 0.21 and the first try was really funny! Selecting Custom size of 15 megs, it gave me a video size of 1465507384, so the comp test was 4568 and the horizontal resolution 704. I restart GKIF4U, tried again, and now works OK. Don't really understand what's wrong with me...
Another small suggestion...you could also allow to limit the maximum horizontal res to 640, 704 gives some problems to old pcs like mine.

lenOx: It's a tricky business - I can select title with highest playback from IFO, but I still need a mean of doing that second step, i.e. actually ripping that chain out of whole vobset. And this is DVD rippers business (and those tools contain DeCSS code), which is a no go at the moment... Although if someone can point me to the ripper which doesn't contain DeCSS code and will not work on DVDs, but only on decrypted material already, then I can have a look at it...

i always use dvddecrypter to make 1:1 images of the dvd to hdd, with css key already cracked.. so therefore it should be no problem for you?

remember the testdvd i did as first example?
this one was already ripped to hdd, and mounted with daemon tools as a virtual dvd drive, but it should be no prob for gkif4u to select the biggest vob set?

maybe for us season freaks (coz that would be simple to implement if biggest ifo is implemented):
an option to encode all episodes from one dvd in one batch run...
maybe automatically selected big vob sets (lets say , the user could specify everything above 40 minutes of playtime), i think that could be implemented with a simple loop construction, if you are able to get the playtime of every vob set from the dvd ifo structure...
that feature combined with batching up 7 dvd´s in 7 virtual dvd drives und running gkif4u would be the greatest thing ever invented ;)

RE the legal issue w/ burning/ripping, I don't understand how that wouldn't be legal

the burning is 100% legal - nero, clonecd, blindwrite, alcohol 120% etc prove as much

as for ripping - aren't there any legal progs out there that rip and could serve as a precedent ?

and I mean, I thought making a copy of something you legally own is legal

I think all you have to do is put a little warning like clonecd "please don't use this software to make illegal copies of copyrighted material"

of course im not exactly knowledgable in the law subject so i could very well be wrong on both accounts

Having an application which just produces something unfinished so that you finish it manually is beyond the scope of the GKIF4U. In fact it's GK in it's current form that can do that :)

Sorry to be a nag but I really think that a 'no audio' option would give you a wider user base in the long run. While GK can produce a video only movie it's still alot more work to use that GKIF4U. GKIF4U makes all the decisions for you and produces a fantastic looking video. Allowing the user to take this video and mux into whatever container format ( now or future ) they choose will give GKIF4U added flexibility which will mean more people will use it.

Another way is to give the user a 'add file' option, like GK, so that the sizing calculation works off this sound file size. This way users could create any quality/bitrate mp3/ogg sound file they choose and still mux it into the final result. All within GKIF4U. I know it is a departure from the one-click-wonder idea but as I see it you can still offer a very straight forward encoding program with additional flexibility.

Anyway thats the end of my rambling. Great work BTW. running 0.21 now.

It actually is ! :) I personally always do perfect 4:3 videos, and moreover I hardly ever seen ITU-followed 4:3 video which has black bars on top and bottom... I will enhance this feature so that it's only used for 4:3 videos, but has no effect for widescreen ones where ITU should always be followed.

NOO :) Transcoding is process of conversion from one format to another, isn't it? (if you read DivX5 docs and license then you'll see that mentioned quite a lot there...)

About 1:1 mode - I don't think it's useful until there are no hardware/software players which can play anamorphic mpeg4 sources. When they appear, then it can be an option.

That's correct. It does that now already. But it will only ok if biggest vobset has just one program chain (which is normally the case for movies). In case of TV shows I still need to split the vobset into chains...
Because if it is not the case - DVD2AVI just indexes the first chain in the vobset (I think that what's happened to you).

@Venom_IL

Burning is not illegal, you're right. I'm just not convinced that it's a usefull feature to have.
Regarding ripping. It's a question of not having any problems. Different countries, different laws. Considering that this app will be quite popular for not-so-computer-oriented ppl (meaning a lot of ppl can use it) the last thing I want is to draw unnecessary attention of officals and cause any possible lawsuites (even if you know that you might not gonna loose). I'm not specifivally looking for troubles.

@Messer

Not in the first version. Probably eventually...

@Werter

You've run into exact problem I fixed in 0.21 :)
About user base: I think number of ppl who uses new containers is thouthands times less than those ones ready to use AVI. Please remember that this effort started as desire to promote mpeg4 video for ppl who probably are not gonna watch it on the computer, but rather on standalones. I think OGM community can wait a month until its support will be implemented :)

Hi-

Considering that this app will be quite popular for not-so-computer-oriented ppl...

and:

this effort started as desire to promote mpeg4 video for ppl who probably are not gonna watch it on the computer, but rather on standalones.

So keep it real simple. It should be for .avi only. Make it work for movies and TV show episodes backed up directly from the DVD and forget everything else. Don't give too many choices. You'll just confuse people. But in that context, I can see how integrating CD burning might be useful. Even here I've seen questions from people wondering how to burn their .avi's to CD. You'll get people trying to use EasyCDCreator to burn the way they do their music CDs. If you want to make a gkFastPro version later to do more things, then fine. But the basic version should only perform the basics. Everything else can already be done with Robot4Rip and/or GKnot.

I might suggest a Help or Info or Instructions Tab at the top or somewhere to explain in detail what has to be installed, where to get it, and how to use the program. Something similar to the Usage.txt, but maybe even more detailed, in simple, easy to understand language. People are used to seeing such things. Maybe start with the basics, like, "To use this program, you'll need a computer with a DVD-ROM drive." Never underestimate people's ignorance:

well i tried to encode the nicet&a clip with gki4fu again, but the outcome was rather strange again:
unlike the other clip it doesn't resize at all, but encodes at a faar too high bitrate.
the end result:
an avi twice the size of the original vob
no 'finished version' (muxed version) of the video, although it says muxing audio... and finished encoding in the log file

next step: trying to encode the 34 min clip with fixed width... looking forward to the results!

Wow, this is great!
For it's intended purpose it is perfect and would save alot of time making decisions :)

I did notice a couple of things though, more cosmetic I guess as function is not affected...

In the log it says "Found xxxxx frames", I'm not sure what this is referring to, but (my) logical assumption is the number of frames in the movie or clip? But it is a much larger figure than that on each test I've tried, so it has me confused.

Here is an example:

[3/11/2003 6:38:45 p.m.] Started encoding.
[3/11/2003 6:38:45 p.m.] Demuxing and indexing.
[3/11/2003 6:41:42 p.m.] Found 162329 frames

The number of frames in the movie is 129863. It appears to be around 20-25% higher on each test I've made, mostly trailers or extras on a DVD, but also the main movie as above.

The second thing I've noticed is the scroll bars in the log pane sometimes disappear, like if I open another window on top of GKiF4U... by clicking on the edge of the log pane where the scroll bars should be activates them and they appear again.
Maybe that is a perculiarity on my system only?

Neither of these affect the result though, which is high quality IMO

how do you get the number of frames? by opening the same d2v file as was created by gkif4u ? the number of frames i report is the number of frames that i count in d2v file taking into account ivtc or FF. Are you dealing with NTSC source ? if yes, what percentage of FILM is reported in the logs ?

@killingspree

as soon as i have some more free time i'm planning to write some more documentation, which will be included in the help section of About window. Also I think I will add a memo describing advanced options right below those option... There should be not that much to explain anyway (after I make one installer which takes care of step 0 from usage.txt) apart from ripping step.

and I mean, I thought making a copy of something you legally own is legal

sadly, in germany here, since 2 months it´s not even allowed to bypass a simple "copyrighted" bit on a dvd or audio cd... its illegal..
therefore all softwares that can be uses to bypass copy protection are forbidden by law to be sold (clonecd for example was sold from elby, because of this)

@lenOx:

i´ll try to replicate the error an edit here
EDIT: error occuring: editing the edit-field (340 mb for example)
error disappers: when using the arrows -->341 mb, then 340 again

just update the variable used for the custom mb size "onKeyPress" when the focus is on the editfield and it should be gone.

@zerocoolnl and others trying to help:
please post the exact line from the avs script where the error occured.
the .avs script is located in the subdir "tmp" where your final avi will be created, and can be opened with notepad or other text editors.

in this case, however no script line was given
i think, its because no output avi has been selected, good that you tested that, so len0x can prevent that error.

[3/11/2003 6:41:42 p.m.] Found 162329 frames

The number of frames in the movie is 129863.

Almost certainly gkFast applied IVTC or Force Film, depending on the Film Percentage. The larger number would be the number of frames at the original 29.97fps, and the final frame count would be the 23.976fps .avi after IVTC or Force Film. Down at the bottom of the .d2v it'll tell you the Film Percentage. Force Film or IVTC remove the 20% of the frames that are duplicates. 162329x0.8=129863.2. One of the beauties of the program is that you don't even have to understand IVTC, and it still gets it right.

Sorry I was in a rush this morning and neglected to include that information.

These were all PAL source, and progressive. Yes opening the d2v file created by gkif4u shows the correct number of frames, just the log reports it differently.

That movie I'd already encoded about 3 times in the past week so I knew the number of frames by heart, probably why it stood out to me being so far off what I would expect.

Your calculations would be absolutely correct if it was NTSC, but it was a PAL source.

I encoded two movies last night and they both look great. This is the app i've been waiting for.

Pal/2 x CD with AC3 sound/704x288
PAL/2 x CD with mp3 vpr 128 sound/subtitles ( Portugues )/ 608x320

Size is bang on, quality superb. Couple of clicks and I woke up with two lovely looking movies......

One idea.... I don't really intend to ever cut my movies to cd/dvd but store them on a media server and stream them over my house network. I think more and more people are doing this. I normally go for 2 x CD size because I think it gives good quality + ac3 sound.

What I think would be really useful is allow the user to specify the percentage they would like to use after the compressibilty test has been performed, instead of a maximum file size. You already have the 'Maximum Quality - unlimited size' option.

For example I could specify I would like my movie to encode to 70% of the 'maximum' value found in by the compression test. Both my movies are close to this value anyway but it would be really great to know you are going to get a 70% quality movie from the outset. ( ignoring the final size )

Predicted comptest value is: 62.37
Predicted comptest value is: 74.91

So we go for a quality based setting instead of a final size based setting. Please don't say 'go and use GK' because this is SO much easier to use. You could add it in the 'custom size' dialogue and specify a % in stead of Mb.

I am going to check out the 'maximum quality' option tonight. What codec settings does it use ?

Thanks again for all you hard work.

I need full log file for this one. It looks to me that actual target size was messed up. I think it's probably the same problem other ppl had, i.e. when you edit custom size gkif4u still thinks that target size is 1400Mb...

This is the error I've got. I get the main movie to the HD with DVDDecrypter 3.1.5.0 In the map: D:\DVD\Unbreakable\VIDEO_TS
But, when I select that map I get the error.

Can you post the content of "VTS_01 - Stream Information.txt" (or something like that) created by DVDDecrypter here, please.
I tested gkif4u on 3.1.6 and 3.1.7 only, may be 3.1.5 had different format of that stream info file.

You're right, Jeffster-

And here I did all those NTSC ForcedFilm calculations for nothing. :) Sounds like a small, easily fixed, bug.

hm... I'm catching another event - "OnExit", which is working fine on my system (I've spent 15 min trying to replicate this). But I can trap "onChange" or "onKeyPress" events as well...

I wish I knew what was that bug all about :)

*Edit* And btw, your calculations were wrong - gkif4u's supposed to give only smaller number of frames that actual. (30fps -> 24fps). What jeffster experienced was something like 24fps -> 30fps, which is beyong my understanding of how this could happened :)

@Jeffster - can you please send me that D2V file to tonylen0x@yahoo.co.uk so that I could have a look at it. (the only guess is that parsing of it went wrong somewhere)

the reason is simple: current GK have such somplicated source code, that it was simpler for me to write something from scratch than modify existing source code :) Flexibility never comes for free...

As in sell for money ? Noo, it'll stay freeware :) Even if I wanted to, then there was a question of all other tools I'm using...
But I do have some interesting plans for it (will be announced later).

Blind me! :) I found that all PAL based sources were handled not properly by inceasing number of frames by 25% :(
So in the end you get 90-95% of comp test which made video with much lower resolution that it could do... I'm gonna release 0.22 almost straight away!

The problem with frame count for PAL sources should be solved as well as target size should always be picked up correctly.

For PAL sources 0.22 should make a large difference in resolution (you should see increase of width by 64 pixels at least). So comp test value is not above 90% anymore :)

My to do list for 0.30 (still alpha):

- delete "tmp" dir on job run
- check for "[" and "]" symbols in output path (to avoid confusion with DVD2AVI parameters)
- solve the problem when output is in the root of the drive
- calculate and display percentage of first pass size
- split final video if its more than one CD
- Change "Misc" advanced options to remove confusion to first time users (will do a simple TV/FILM switch and remove "4:3 perfect ratio" setting )
- change default deinterlacer

after that I will concentrate on doing installers and docs and then beta (0.4) will be released.

Sharp matrix and resizer, no bframes, width of 720 pixels (even if it crops some it'll resize back to 720, basically preserving DVD quality).

Yes, I was wondering why nobody tried that before...

results are in on the maximum quality run

movie is PAL and about 1.5 hours

1) 2 cd/AC3 size is 1.4Gb ( resolution 704x288)
2) Maximum quality/AC3 size is 1.9Gb( resolution 720x288)

quality is really good as there is no compression test/first pass so it's very quick to encode. Not sure if it justifies the extra 0.5Gb. Are the 'maximum quality' settings the same as you use for the compression test ? Can you please please please allow the user to set the % quality they require ie instead of 'maximum quality' you could specify 60/70/80/90% quality. I would normally go for about 70% and store the movie on harddrive.

Do I need to run these tests again with version 0.22 as this is a PAL movie ? I've seen the posts about frame count.

GREAT WORK.

Not exactly. Comp test always uses b-frames. Maximum quality mode doesn't.

I will not put this on the main widnow - that's for sure, but I can put small edit box on advanced options... Let me think about it...

If you had resolution below 704 in width then you might want to rerun those ones as you will benefit from larger resolution. If it's already 704 then it's not gonna be increased anyway...

In the title menu, it says THE tool for DVD-2-XviD/XviD conversion. Did you mean XviD/DivX ?

Also any thoughts on what kind of icon you want, since you mentioned you wanted to change it?

EDIT: Just realized maybe you left both as XviD since DivX is not supported yet. Oops!
