LAV Filters - DirectShow Media Splitter and Decoders

It's probably a bit more complex than that, when you consider overlapping subtitle lines (CueDuration) residing in multiple MKV clusters scattered minutes to hours apart. In order for this to be in any way efficient, you'd want to seek and pull subtitles as directly as possible using CueRelativePosition, while not actually seeking the video or audio at all. Implmenting an intelligent background subtitle cache of some sort, may also be useful for cutting down on potential random access seeks.

I figured my solution seemed too simple. Can probably make it work by cherry-picking the subtitles out of the file if i know where they are.


It would be great to see Lav's (simple) blueray navigation extended to DVDs...

There are no plans for this.

Anyway the point remains that LAV Splitter will never offer any more DVD features, so if you want to play DVDs you better get Windows 8 Pro or the Pro Pack (or you get another DVD player like PowerDVD or the likes)

DVD playback in this case means only that MS MPEG2 decoder is available with pro or wmc. DVD navigator is available in all windows 8 versions afaik.

Is there a way to force playback of English AC3/DTS over PCM type tracks? Sometimes the default track is PCM with optional multi-channel track. I'd obviously like forced playback of the multi-channel track without having to remux.

The track with the highest number of channels is always preferred, unless you have a MKV file with an actual "Default" marking, in which case it cannot be overriden.
You can fix such MKV flags without a full Remux, simply use the header editor of mmg.

It also depends on the player. In MC you can select your prefered track the first time and it will be remembered for subsequent playback.

As far as I know, Windows 8 only has a DVD Navigator in the WMC Version.

Not really a solution for the future but it is worth noting that you can get the WMC pack for Win8 for free from Microsoft until sometime in January.

Its about 10% the height of the screen and 100% width, like a horizontal block of blurred image. It only happens in software decoding mode, not cuvid decoding mode.

The corruption also happens in CUVID mode, but its not as obvious because the hardware does better error concealment, the file is just broken there.

Stereo AC3 in avi container do not work in Windows Media Center. In WMP there is no sound, in WMC can't open file

Are you sure either of those programs is using LAV? IIRC, neither of those actually lets you choose which codecs it uses, a prime example of the need for system-wide codec settings in the Control Panel (which can be protected from unwanted changes), rather than relying on merits and programs deciding what's best by themselves.

Oooh the beta of MediaPortal 1.3.0 lets you choose your own splitter. I wonder how LAV Splitter will handle live TV in this environment. :D

EDIT: Hmmm that's weird, using LAV Splitter + EVR in MediaPortal 1.3.0 Beta plays videos that have dodgy playback in MPC-HC perfectly. Wasn't expecting that.

I have a question: I just tried a '2-in-1' type mkv, and is noticed lavfilters didnt show the 2 separate streams. Is it something i confugured wrongly, or dont the lavfilters support 'x-in-1' type mkv's ? And if not, will they support it soon?

I tried playing that file in WMP with both 0.54.1 and the latest development version, and it plays just perfectly with LAV Splitter and LAV Audio.

Note that Microsoft built-in filters are turned off on my machine, so that LAV will be used.

Problem is that when you start streaming a file is created in temporary internet files called 127_0_0_1[1] or similar (yes i'm streaming to the same PC) and the file seem to grow as the video is fed but when it hits 4GB the streams grinds to a halt. no errors, just stops (or well it seems like it actually restarts playing from where u started the stream when the file reaches 4GB).

I have the same problem. :(

I have no idea how this whole concept is supposed to work.
If one of you can explain in detail which components interact in what way, who writes and who reads what files, and how the data gets into LAV, i can possibly help you - but without knowing a thing about whats going on, there is just nothing i can say.

All i know is that somehow this temporary file gets created, and somehow the data gets to LAV, but who does the actual writing and reading, i cannot say.
I also have DVBViewer (only with DVB-C/T though), so if you can just explain how to set this up what you have there, that might already help.

IMHO, a nice first step would be just to show different icons for splitter, video and audio, so people can see with one quick glance at the tray section which LAV components are active. The next step would be to open the appropriate settings dialog when double clicking on the icons. These two things should be quite easy. The "final" step would be a left/right click context menu with stream switching etc. But that's probably the most work, and it isn't really necessary to make tray icons useful, so it could be implemented later.

P.S: Development can get "interesting" if your tray icons try to support multiple player instances in a clever way somehow. But I guess it would be good enough to first simply add one icon per filter instance.

I have no plans to make this really smart. I'll probably turn them off by default, and if someone really runs several instances, well, their loss. I'll blacklist the icons from common problem candiates like the explorer or reclocks fps guessing thing, so they dont cause random icons to appear.

I for one would settle for a "tooltip" and stream changing (for the dumb players) :p cause the most important part is for everybody to be sure they are using LAV (and so maybe you'll get less false bug reports :) )

Thats not easily possible without launching a process thats shared between all filters (like madVR launches its control process), i don't think i'll be doing this.

Another useful function of the tray icon could be to display a list of all filters in the graph. And access their config dialogs by clicking on them. Very handy for quickly seeing what is going on and opening settings of filters that don't have their own tray icon (or have it disabled).

The splitter could offer Blu-ray title selection.

A few other apps that should be added to the icon blacklist are these video editors: Movie Maker (moviemk.exe), Adobe Premiere (premiere.exe), and Sony Vegas (???.exe).
