View Full Version : LAV Filters - DirectShow Media Splitter and Decoders

Use DXVA Native.
While in theory DXVA-CB could be made to work, it would only work if LAV Video is connected directly to the renderer itself, not allowing post-processing in any case, so DXVA-CB does not offer any advantages over DXVA native anymore.
If I switch to DXVA native, subtitles stop working, so that's not really an option.
Isn't it just a detection bug? I mean, DXVA-CB works fine if I start in a window first, then fullscreen it... so it can obviously work in fullscreen.

It needs access to the Direct3D device, and under fullscreen exclusive mode, you cannot get access anymore. Thats the end of the story.

So you're saying WMC doesn't enter fullscreen exclusive mode if a video is already playing (because DXVA-CB continues to work)? That doesn't make any sense...
Guess there's still no option for DXVA + Subs on AMD graphics cards :(

Once you have an instance of the D3D device, like when you grab it before it goes Fullscreen, you keep it.
But you cannot create any new instances of the D3D device once its in fullscreen exclusive mode.

Yes there is, just not with WMC.

Alrighty then, I'll simply prevent Windows Media Center from entering fullscreen exclusive mode.
I'll just have to find a way to launch it in a fullscreen chromeless window instead of actual fullscreen. This (http://www.mods.com.au/Maxifier/) looks like it might work.

Not using Windows Media Center is not an option, no other solution does what I need.
Edit: By the way, Does LAV's CUDA decoding work in fullscreen exclusive mode? Might swap everything over to Nvidia cards if that's the case...

Yes, CUDA has a way to access the decoder without using D3D.

Maxifier fixed it, by the way.
I have Windows Media Center, in fullscreen, using LAV DXVA (Copy-back), with working softsubs. :D

Maybe try using a better media centre rather than splashing out on an nVidia card just for hardware decoding or subtitles?

I'm open to suggestions, but I've tried a bunch of media center software and Windows Media Center is the only one that seems to be able do everything properly...

Have you tried MediaPortal? It's extremely customisable but does take a fair amount of effort to set up correctly (sorta like Foobar in the world of media players).

Tried it. To Media Portal's credit, it's not nearly as difficult to get going as XBMC, but still not as easy as Windows Media Center.
Media Portal and XBMC both fall flat on their face when you attempt to use them for live TV / DVR functionality. They just don't do it as well as Windows Media Center.
The "movie library" view in Media Portal and XBMC are also both very limited. I'm using a plugin called My Movies (http://www.mymovies.dk/) to handle my movie library in Windows Media Center, which allows me to do things like associate multiple videos with a single title (alternate versions of the movie, Making-of documentaries, deleted scenes, etc). I have found no way to get this functionality in Media Portal or XBMC, which is another instant deal-breaker.

I use MediaPortal for live/recorded TV, works fine for me but fair enough if it doesn't do what you want. Series link would be nice and is actually included in a special build (called "Sky enhancements" or something, compatible with Freesat) but I haven't tried that yet.
For TV programmes and films, StreamedMP is what you need. It has a Fantastic UI that fits in very well with the media centre vibe.
There's loads of extra things that make a great integrated system too, like catch-up TV (BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand Five in the UK), Sopcast support, automatic refresh rate switching, Blu-ray support (still in testing), 14 day internet-based EPG, etc.
It's far from perfect (MadVR support would be nice, for example) but I love it. :)

Nev, just finished building my machine today. Dropped a 680 in it. What a machine! Now I'm nVidia on both HTPC's. My son has the 5870 now and loves it. He does mostly gaming, so...But yea, 3770k with a 680 is amazing. I should be able to handle just about everything for the foreseeable future.

To sum this up, the bug is that the full/limited labels are reversed and that the setting doesn't stick?
Anyone has anything to add (see a different problem)?
Yes, somewhat different. With my TV, it is impossible to get the iGPU to output Full range RGB, both settings look the same, flat washed out. I tried connecting both directly to the TV and via the Onkyo.
Then I went back to the ATI card, set it to Limited RGB, and the colors there now looked just as flat and washed out. My TV is a Samsung DLP 50A650.

For media converter from ArcSoft it works fine. For madVR, not so much. I have to use Egur's trick of setting up a fake display. But I have CUVID now so I don't much care about it for madVR. QS is freaking *FAST* for transcoding blu-rays to mp4's for my Xoom, though. Like 7 minutes fast. It's insane.

How are you getting past the stage that these transcoding tools refuse to recognize HD audio tracks.. It is always a pain to see that message flash up.. and to tell the truth, I have not even had one successful session with Media Espresso using QuickSync (admittedly, I throw in some crazy files such as lossless H.264 encodes at it first, and it probably messes up the software so much that it refuses to convert anything after that -- even after multiple reboots)

Oh kids these days. :p Use MakeMKV to convert your blu-ray to an MKV with a core track first. Then use that with Media Converter. Media Espresso SUCKS and is COMPLETELY useless. I own it. It's pointless. Don't waste your time with it.

Maybe I am going too much OT, but has anyone tried using DVDFab for this process?
http://www.dvdfab.com/intel-quick-sync.htm
This looks like it won't need the rip-to-mkv process...
karl_lillevold
11th May 2012, 04:30
DVDFab Blu-ray Ripper works like a charm with QuickSync, too. I can transcode a full length movie 1920x1080 -> 1920x1080 lower bitrate, while converting the soundtrack to AC3 (or leave it as original) at 120 fps! (Intel 2500K running at 4.7GHz). Or it can remux to MKV (just like MakeMKV, I can imagine) in 5 minutes flat.
Andy o
11th May 2012, 05:47
Remuxing is for the most part dependent on HDD speed, or of course blu-ray drive speed. Interesting about DVDFab though. With LAV, I guess copyback would be an option for me if I do buy or build a new PC, since NV cards with my receiver are just annoying (yeah, yeah, I know I'm always going on about this :D). My conundrum then would be that if it's a laptop, I want an NV card cause of Optimus. The new HP DV6t quad is looking mighty good.

Has anyone had any problems using NVIDIA CUVID with 2 cards in SLI-mode? On other hardware decoders, including MPC-HC's internal one and even CoreAVC, the Video Decoding is done on the secondary card/GPU, thus leaving the primary card to do the rendering. However, according to GPU-Z, hardware decoding with LAV is being done on the primary card. This hurts my performance since everything is being run on one GPU, leaving the second one doing nothing. (Even CoreAVC runs more smoothly with fewer glitches than LAV Video Decoder on my system because of this!)
I can always go back to Software Decoding; however, I am running some CPU-intensive avisynth scripts, so I would like to free-up the CPU by doing decoding on my GPU...
Thanks much in advance for your help!

@NEV After the last ffmpeg update the building it's failing with the same old error:p "library.mak:95: *** missing separator. Stop."Builds fine for me, must be on your end.
You should make sure ffmpeg is checked out with LF line endings (set git config core.autocrlf to "false" or "input", not to "true")
Edit:
I also fixed it in the repository that it shouldnt be needed anymore.
Can you please fixed it again in the repository ?

it should be set to "false" or "input" to avoid the ffmpeg issue.
I just pushed a fix for the original issue, though.

I was getting that error after changing it to "false" or "input"
After setting back to "true" and your update it's working again
Could it be cause I'm using http://code.google.com/p/msysgit/downloads/detail?name=PortableGit-1.7.10-preview20120409.7z&can=2&q= without any modifications ?

Why do think I put a 256gb vertex 4 in my new machine, Andy. :) transcoding is very fast when read from an ssd and written to a fast he'd.

Sure, I wasn't saying that transcoding can't be HDD dependent, especially with those crazy speeds QS gives you, only that remuxing usually is, unless you have a very old CPU with a relatively new hard drive.
SamuriHL
11th May 2012, 15:57
I can tell you that whatever QS is doing, it's super fast compared to even CUVID. CUVID transcoding takes almost double the time. I'm wondering if QS is better with LAV than CUVID? I've not had any issues with it, but, I simply meant is there some theoretical advantage using QS vs CUVID for decoding?
nevcairiel
11th May 2012, 16:02
QS is faster, so seeking may be faster in some situations. QS may also use less power, because in default mode any CUDA access forces 3D performance clocks. Not sure if thats still valid for 6xx cards though, they redid power/performance management.
SamuriHL
11th May 2012, 16:03
Interesting. Maybe I'll set that up again and check it out. I'm really liking the 680 a lot so far. Hell, I'm really enjoying the whole machine. But I'm now nVidia on both HTPC's which I consider a good thing. Now I have options...

LAV Filters 0.50.3
LAV Splitter
- Fixed playback of raw PCM in AVI streams
- Fixed a rare misdetection of MPEG-2 as VC-1
LAV Video
- QuickSync: Fixed playback of some H.264 streams that would run out of sync on newer drivers
- Fixed a memory leak when playing H.264 RGB (and some other formats)
- Improved behaviour for H.264 and MPEG-2 on Live TV channel changes
LAV Audio
- Added support for Speex (via libspeex)
- Improved support for AMR-NB/WB (using OpenCore decoder)
Download: Installer (both x86/x64) (http://files.1f0.de/lavf/LAVFilters-0.50.3.exe) -- Zips: 32-bit (http://files.1f0.de/lavf/LAVFilters-0.50.3.zip) & 64-bit (http://files.1f0.de/lavf/LAVFilters-0.50.3-x64.zip)
Another small bugfix release, nothing big and special. Maybe for some people Speex support may be useful. Note that it only works really well with LAV Splitter.
Something some people already noticed, i created a Git clone of the QuickSyncDecoder repository, and added it as a new submodule into my Git tree.
This makes integrating it into the build process and debugging much easier. It should hopefully also make building the whole package a bit easier for everyone else.
I still plan to work on audio mixing as the next big project, just not sure when i'll find the time exactly.
In the meantime, take care and have fun!

Nev, I'm having trouble with files that have had cuts made in TS-Doctor, which is configured to use LAV Splitter and LAV decoders. I always make edits at key frames, trying to avoid issues.
When I playback this sample (http://www.mediafire.com/?ojig2rq48o2622h), the edit point (at ~19 seconds) plays as you would expect when using MadVR + software decoding (LAV 0.50.3). However, it briefly goes a bit weird when using EVR + software decoding (minor flashing). The main issue is when using EVR + DXVA2 Native (nVidia) - it basically goes mental (a lot of flashing and the audio cuts out for about a second).
Is this something that can be fixed? If it's a problem with how the file is put together then I'd appreciate any info you can provide so I can pass it on to the author of TS-Doctor (who is very good at helping on his forum and fixing bugs).
Thanks!

ffdshow dxva has serious issues with subtitles, it will cause corruption on certain files.
You cannot just modify the surfaces of the video to add subtitles, because those surfaces are still used as reference frames.

I see no big issues.
It flashes a bit more then software decoding (but still not "mental"), but audio keeps going, and its not really all that bad.
Anyway, you need to make sure the edit is at an IDR frame, not just an I frame.
I didn't look what is in this file, its always a bit hard to find those spots exactly.
Other then that, i dunno.

Example file is not that easy, I just copied the first 20MB of the file, because VirtualDub removes the audio from the video stream.

I am experiences strange crashes with very small VC1 files. These are mostly test-patterns. I set mpc to repeat playing them in a loop (playback -> repeat forever). Using LAV Splitter mpc-hc crashes right before the second loop. I uploaded one of these here:
http://www10.zippyshare.com/v/69401085/file.html
Using MPCs internal splitter everything works fine. I already tried to change decoders and other filters, but it seems that lav splitter is the culprit. The file is below 100kb, maybe somebody can verify.

Casshern
