How could I create a 720p and 1080p version of the same movie without muxing it twice? The muxing takes approximately 1 hour and results in mostly the same files.

you must take both your h264 streams and using mkvtoolnix (mmg.exe) you mux to a single file.

Given the apparent difficulty in reading the first post or actually exploring all the tabs, would it make sense to move the "Make Report" button to the main application frame, underneath "Update HdConvertToX" or right above "Generate Encode"? There is plenty of room there and you might avoid having to keep asking for the make report and then posting again to tell people where the button is. It might make things easier for you in the long run.

Hello,
I would just like to post my results using HDC to re-encode movies that I have originally encoded that I have decided are too large file size.

These movies I originally encoded to fit on a single layer DVD (approx 4.4 GB) but now I want them to compatible with FAT 32 (now must be <4 GB).

So I have been using HDC. First I open the original .AVI file that I have already encoded, when it says "file not supported, would you like to mux into MKV as last try?" I say "Yes".

Then click "Analyze File."

Then choose settings just as normally encoding a file.

The one problem is that you cannot copy audio if it is encoded using mp3. So the re-encoded file will have no audio. To get around this, open ORIGINAL encoded file in Avidemux and save audio. Then open re-encoded file in Avidemux and under audio choose "external mp3". Then save video.

Congratulations, you have just re-encoded original AVI into smaller file size avi for your pleasure. I think another good application of this would be making smaller file size for portable devices, IE, IPOD, IPHONE, Cell phone, etc.

Hello buzzqw,
thanks for the updates. As a former AutoMKV user (had to update to HDC because of Win7 x64) I'm looking for an easy way to encode lots of different tv-recordings by putting them simply in a queue and go. The thing I loved most at AutoMKV was the automatic analysis for interlaced/progressive (safe-deinterlacer). This was a big time-saver, in HDC I now have to test manually wich takes many minutes before I can go to the next Queue-Job.
I'm shure you made this for good reasons, but do you think we can get back the interlace-auto-analysis as an option for a little bit more automatism?

every time you select a new file, hdc ASK if your file has same properties as previous (width, height, lenght... audio..)
if your files are different there isn't a quick method..

just one more hint: if you encode by crf (not bitrate) and you know that audio used are always the same (and with and height) you can always assume the same properties

thanks for the hint, you're right, this can save time, too. Unfortunately my recordings a quite different in interlaced/progressive, so to be sure not to deinterlace unnecessarily I have to to this 'Test interlace pattern'. Maybe you know a little tool which analyses my files a bit faster? This could be a step in my workflow before putting files to HDC.

Hi there,
I have a suggestion - somewhere to show the bitrate of the audio. It's very annoying to set the encoding to 448kbps AAC only to find out later on that the source has 192kbps bit rate.
Is that something you would consider?

I was wondering if someone could help me out with a transcoding problem i'm having.

I have a MKV file which i would like to play on my PS3 with the PS3 Media Server using the TsMUXer option as opposed to Mencoder which requires realtime transcoding. Like a few other similar transcoded files, it will steam to the PS3 but only with audio and no video.
So i tried to use HDConvertToX to transcode these files with NMT compatibility using 1 Pass Quality.

When I use lower quality transcoder settings for testing such as CRF21 and Quality FAST the file streams (TsMuxer option) and plays on the PS3 fine.
But when I up these values the transcoded file will not play at all the PS3 using tsmuxer or mencoder options. The PS3 displays an error "Data Type Not Supported...".
I tried to use high quality 2 Pass transcoder settings and that resultant file has also failed and reported same error.

I believe HDConvertToX has been setup correctly as i have managed to archive some DVD's into MKV's and transcode a 720p DTS file to include hardcoded subtitles. All stream and play fine on the PS3 using the TsMuxer with PS3Media server. CoreAVC is my default decoder for MKV's and was wondering if that could be causing problems ?

I keep trying to convert some home .mpg files into x264/MKV and after the audio processing finishes (AC3 into Nero AAC), it appears the command line in the DOS window tries to run x264 and all I hear is a squeak sound and it's done. It never does the video encode.

Granted I haven't used this program in months, but it used to work before the last batch of upgrades.

Any ideas?

I am having trouble to select the subtitle of the movie "district 9" with the "foreign" language of the alians. It is visible on BR, but not selectable inside the subs section. Only the other language subtitles are there which of course include the part with the alien language. However, I would like to just have the alien language translation burned in, just like the BR.

Any ideas?

if this information is available from eac3to i will put it, else.. no
and.. if you reencode ac3 to 448kbs, i will suggest to copy it..

Here is the link to the unofficial Xvid 1.2.2 with VAQ. I tested it in AutoGK 2.55 instead of 1.2.1 Vaq build and it produces undersized files(maybe just incompatibility with AutoGK or my XP system?) but the quality using tweaked options seems much better. That said Koepi's standard(no VAQ) 1.2.2 build for me caused undesizing too after tests.

I updated to the latest HDC - v2.4.621.4206 and tried to to transcode again with settings as:

-1 Pass CRF16 Extreme Quality

A new problem is occurring now which i think is related to this HDC build. After creating the hdencodertox-pid2.dts the transcoding process window exits. I managed to see an error message pointing to b-pyramid 0 in the window before it closed. I repeated the steps using another 1080p DTS file with various settings including Quality Fast and CRF22 but same thing happened. This only happens when STRICT is enabled.

the difference is off .220372184133202744% (even if 18mb will break DL compatibility..)

i suggest to remux avimux_gui, it will allow (iirc) to create smaller mkv by using different index type

in next update i will try to reduce this error.. but it's impossibile (can also be due to x264 using more bitrate then requested)

Updated X264 and transcoding is no longer bombing out with NMT STRICT enabled. I have kicked off 1 Pass transcoding with CRF16, Quality Slower & specified bit rate of 13000 (slightly larger than original). I will get back to you soon as transcoding is completed and tested on PS3. Fingers crossed... :thanks:

The transcoding completed without errors this time but the new transcoded file will still not play on PS3 (PS3Media server using tsmuxer or mencoder )- "The Data Type Is Not Supported"

Seems we are still stuck with original problem where lower quality transcodes work fine whilst higher ones fail with ps3media.
Please help. Any ideas / suggestions would be most welcome.:confused:

*EDIT*

I done some testing and came across something interesting.
I removed the DTS track from the transcoded MKV file (mkvmerge gui 2.30) and the new video only file streamed successfully to the PS3.

I than took the original MKV file & extracted the DTS audio track (mkvextract 1.6.4.1) and merged it with the video only track. To my dismay the file no longer steamed and as before gave the same "data type not supported" error.:mad:

I am having a few probelms with a couple of wmv files.
When I load the wmv it says only first video and audio track will be encoded
The I see the use best decoder changed automatically to force directshowsource.
Then I clicked analyze source. Which gave me error message
"Problem analyzing video" or something

I have installed latest ffdshow and haalisplitter and used all your recommended settings. Cant figure out what the problem is. There is no output. I see the audio in the job folder but the video part is 0kb in the same job folder?

Nope no error. The video loads fine. So I assume no need to reinstall wmp11? What does this mean?

Also do I need to reinstall avisynth to the non multithread version or do I just untick it in HDC? Still something is wrong

Can anyone please, please, PLEASE help me with this? I buckled and did a fresh install of Windows 7 - same problem, will not do analysis of bluray.

Installed windows 7 from scratch 2 more times, exact same problem. Given up on getting it working under Win7 (before anyone asks, yes I followed all the procedures in this thread).

Now running virgin "Windows XP Mode" (virtual machine) under Windows 7...... First (and only) things I install, ffdshow, splitter, avisynth etc. EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM -"File Check, Please check media properties" window.

Can anyone please run through a step by step method of how to get (or force) this program to understand bluray streams? This includes what the hell exactly has to be ticked & not ticked in ffdshow.

What adds insult to injury is I have been encoding for nigh on 10 years, never running into problems like this before with any encoding suite.

I have searched this forum up, down, left and right, but I have not found a solution to this problem.

Please help before I die of a stress related stroke or heart attack.

I used your posted HDC to repeat the transcoding process as suggested by you.

I used the profile 1 Pass CRF16 Extreme NMT STRICT.

When ONLY the Video was transcoded, the resultant file played fine with PS3MS using TsMuxer. I than manually added the DTS audio from the original but than it gave the familiar "Data type not supported" error.

When both the Video & Audio were transcoding together the reultant file gave the same error error when using TSmuxer or Mencoder with PS3MS.

I also attempted to transcode another MKV file I had which suffers the same no video but only audio problem with PS3MS TsMuxer. Same error occurred. The only thing that I know for sure both have in common is they were ripped from HDDVD's as opposed to blu-ray's.
I'm not sure if this is a common factor causing the transcoding problem.

Also when I was doing tests with transcoding video only the resultant file played with PS3MS TsMuxer but had some skipping frames issue. So i reverted from using 64bit Avisynth back to regular 32bit which cured this particular problem.

Encoding seems to go well but I end up seeing upon avs2avi part encoding to divx it supposed to be encoding and at 50% the file size is trying to fit into 700mb regardless of the size I set. Needs to be Divx and needs to be ABR.

Tried out of the install and from old working via upgrade results in the same.

Help ... Any ideas....?

Ok nothing actually worked under the XP virtual machine so rather than try to get that working I have gone back to Win7 x64 uninstalled/re-installed (but not using any x64 specifc apps etc).

m2ts + mpeg and m2ts + avc seem to be working now (have not done any encoding just analysis). Perhaps I was just unlucky in that all the sources I tried in the past were vc1 and therefore getting constant & predictable failure....?

m2ts + vc1 is still not working despite ffdshow setting of wmv9 and the other win7 tweaks at the top of the thread. Getting the "AviSynth 2.58, build:Dec 22 2008 [08:46:51]DirectShowSource: RenderFile, the filter graph manager won't talk to me
(C:\HDConvert\analysis\analyze.avs, line 43)" error.

Anything anybody can suggest?

since problems seems arise only for dts audio, i suggest to reencode it to ac3

well this could be a NON problem. you are using over 4000 bitrate, maybe you have saturated the source.
try using a much faster preset, it should be able to distribute all bitrate across video

also.. you are using a 1 pass encoding.. use always the 2 pass for aiming to a specific size

Thanks for the answer buzzqw. Forgot to say how much I appreciate your work and this package specifically.

I am not sure about the non-problem as such as it worked/works under 2.3.570.3989 fine and (updated it does not) however it did not seem to assist any making the changes you suggested. Tried 2 pass and lower profile admittedly I have not had chance to check further down the scale but I am willing to try and post results later.

Source does have a Overall bit rate of 3336 Kbps but as said it does not affect 2.3.570.3989.

Obviously will try more an come back with results.
