It's what i used... DvdFab 6.0.6.0 , Ok there's 6.0.7.0 now, but only since a few days ...
I don't understand this: if I have a bad rip, I should not be able to play my vob files with vlc... I think there's something wrong with the 2-minutes lenght difference ...
EDIT:
handbrake finished correctly the encoding (really, I don't understand why handbrake output is 720x304 , starting from 720x576 and cropping 70/70, but this is not the main problem... HDC output is 720x416, it seems to be right)
So, I must think that's a bug HDC-related...
Here's handbrake log:

Ok, so I've got it working converting to MP4. A variety of tests all seem to have come out fine. I've done Gran Torino a number of different ways (by size, by bit rate, with AAC 2ch, AAC 6ch, AC3) and The Game Plan (which is a seamless branching bluray) as well.
However, I still am unable to accomplish my original goal, which is to play my bluray movies via my XBox360. Everything I've looked at still points me to WMV.
So now my efforts will be to convert these same 2 movies to WMV instead of MP4.
With that said, I'm working on Gran Torino. I'm attempting 1-pass quality=95, with wma audio set to 384-48-6-16. We'll see how it goes. If this goes well, I'll try the 2pass method.
If anyone has done this successfully, please chime in and let me know what you did. I would appreciate any guidance.
Thanks.

To get anything close to acceptable video quality, you're going to end up with huge file sizes. When I was doing DVD to WMV, a 2 hour movie would be 2.5-3.5 gb, depending on how much motion and other factors. A hi-def 1080p movie will probably run close to 10 gig with acceptable quality, and a 720p movie near 7 gb.
I would definitely do 2 pass, if this is indeed the route you want to go. Just keep in mind your movies will ONLY play on your PC and XBOX360s. PS3 doesn't support wmv5.1 audio, and I"m not sure if many/any of the NMT players support it or not. x264/5.1aac or AC3 in MP4 is the most compatible format across the most amount of hardware EXCEPT for the Xbox360.
This is MS fault, and I don't understand the issue here. It supports AC3 audio, it supports h264 video, it supports AAC 2 channel, but only in specific combinations. It obviously has the licensing for all the different content types, so why can't we mix and match supported A/V codecs into supported containers. It's stupid, moronic, and short sighted.
But that's Microsoft for you...

gday buzz
for some reason things have gone haywire with my dvd encoding.
i have been ripping & converting my dvd collection for some weeks now with great success until last night.
have found that last nights batch has failed with every movie. no chapters were converted (eac3to says "This video conversion is not supported") for every file & therefore mp4box fails to find the chapters file and crashes.
also, none of the subs were converted???
all these things have worked fine before???
(make report in next post cos its too long for this one)

It's 5 1/2 hours later and this is what I see in the cmd window
Encoded: 5548.6s (100%) Elapsed: 05:30:17 Left: 00:00:00 [0.28x]
It's still going, and the file size in the destination is 0. Um, make that was, now it's 16gigs. So I have no idea what's going on. I guess I'll just continue to be patient.

After 7 hours with it showing 100% done I forced it to end. I'm copying the resulting 16gig file out to my server now. It played on the PC, so we'll see if it streams or not.
I started the encode again, this time using 2pass. I get an error saying the cscript.exe has stopped working.

Ok, since everything else in the bat file seems ok, I tried to run just the last line in a command window. I get an error when I try.
Here is the line:
cscript.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\hdconvert\applications\WMCmd.vbs" -input "C:\Program Files (x86)\hdconvert\job1\hdconverttox_00262.avs" -output "C:\Users\Trent\Videos\underworld_2pass.wmv" -v_codec WVC1 -v_preset good -v_mode 3 -v_bitrate 10294867 -a_codec wmapro -a_mode 0 -a_setting 440_48_6_16
Here is the error:
Error: Cannot initialize Windows Media Encoder object. Please verify that Windows Media Encoder 9 Series is correctly installed on your system. If running 64-bit Windows, make sure that the version of cscript.exe used corresponds to the version (x86/x64) of WME9 installed on your system.
Any thoughts?

@whipdancer
are you sure you have installed wmencoder 9.5 and wmp11 or wmdist11 ?
@zygo
i have an idea
maybe just in your first dvd the chapter is present.. but since you are working with queue.. maybe hdc thinks chapter is present in all dvd
i must check the source.. maybe chapters analisys isn't reinitialized after each input
@flebber

It's what i used... DvdFab 6.0.6.0 , Ok there's 6.0.7.0 now, but only since a few days ...
...
handbrake finished correctly the encoding
...
So, I must think that's a bug HDC-related...
Hi buzz, have you seen my post above?
Excuse me if you are busy...
I wrote this just to be sure you've seen it, there are many log report in this page, maybe mine could get lost :-)
Thank you

gday buzz
i have found your bug.
i had previously converted a bluray to mkv before i started creating that queue. it appears hdc is still using the bluray specs rather than the dvd specs????
eg. you use eac3to for getting chapters from the m2ts file. you normaly use chapterxtractor for chapters from a dvd.
yet the above report shows that you are trying to use eac3to to extract chapters from a vob???? its never going to happen ;)
the same for the subs
for some reason, once you use hdc for a bluray, its stuck in that mode
someone else want to try it & confirm?
cheers :)

Thank you
make yourself the d2v file
BUT just skip the first gops
then feed hdc with the d2v and ac3 extracted
i think it is a problem of ripping because the process/queue is correct
for some reason, once you use hdc for a bluray, its stuck in that mode
as i said before it's problably this.. i will check tomorrow

I will try, I hope to be able to do it :-)
But my log report was about the successfully encoding with handbrake, I don't have a hdc log...
I used the same video_ts folder for handbrake and hdc... So, I continue to think it's something in hdc...
However, I will try and report with your hints :-)
EDIT:
Same problem with another movie...
So, this is something not related to only a movie...

@whipdancer
are you sure you have installed wmencoder 9.5 and wmp11 or wmdist11 ?
BHH
@buzz - I think I do, because the 1-pass quality method runs (it just hangs at the end, but the file gets created fine).
It's only with the 2-pass method that I get the quits responding message.
I'll try the command line from the bat file for the 1-pass and see if I get the same error as I do with the line from the 2-pass command.

you should use the crf you prefer, usually 20 is enough
but if you prefere quality wise encoding feel free to use whatever crf you want
BHH
That is what I did, I chose 20 as I usually do, but in contrast to AUTOMKV the bitrate was only at 1900, it should be much higher.

AC3, 5.1 channels, 448kbps, 48khz, dialnorm: -29dB, 111160ms
111160ms=111 sec, near 2 minutes
i don't know why eac3to report this delay, and i cannot fix it
i can only suggest to do yourself the ac3/d2v
@juGGaKNot
no, hdc will not work with folder as input
you must select first one file, and analyze it
then (using the beta build) you will be able to select all files in current folder
@CYBERSONIC
1) your "issue" isn't related to hdc
2) you are comparing two different avs script
3) you are compating two different encoding script
4) you are comparing two different encoder build, since automkv use a very outdated x264 build
then, if you want more bitrate, use a crf of 10
otherwise you can use the search function and will find that x264 preset are very different now from x264 automkv one's

Hello again!
Sometimes ago I asked you if you can use VirtualDubMod instead of avimuxgui for muxing avi, for many times. With standalone players with Mediatek chipset I had some problems with movies muxed with avimuxgui few years ago.
Few days ago I tried again with another player with another chipset (Sunplus) and the movie just stopped after few seconds. Muxed the same movie with VirtualDubMod and the movie played on my standalone.
Never, any player had any problem with VirtualDubMod muxed avi. With avimuxgui, yes. Many players.
Another problem: entered 5000kbps forced and the resulted encode had about 3170kbps. The movie was encoded with no standalone options and was 720p because the latest tested standalone player can play 720p.
LE: For me is not a big problem because I wknow how to open and save avi in VirtualDubMod.
enjoy,

OK, so this something related to eac3to...
May I solve it using in audio -> decoding option ffmpeg instead of eac3to ? or maybe this will be fixed upgrading eac3to ?
I don't want to mess up things doing something "myself" :-)

After I have selected yes and its completed downloading HDC closes replaces its HDC.exe file I restart only to have version 3569, and if I press update it finds 3667 available again.
How can I fix this?

Did you enable 'use Open-DML output' in AVI-Mux GUI?
Many players don't like it - even though they are DivX certified. When you disable it, the max. file size is limited to 2 GB however. Longer files need to be split. AVI-Mux GUI takes care of the splitting though.

In the final step of muxing video with audio to a mkv file, if the audio is in mp4 conteiner, mkvmerge also reads the chapters from audio file.
Can you please change the muxing parameters for mkvmerge so that the chapters from audio files are not imported ("--no-global-tags" "--no-chapters")
Thank you

Sorry if this is answered somewhere in this thread, I just couldn't find anything.
Is there any known issues with regard to IFOs that have more than one PGC? I select the proper PGC and the analysis shows the correct duration. Sometimes the video of all PGCs get encoded, always accompanied by the audio of the main movies first. So if the main movie gets encoded first, the video and audio will be in sync, otherwise they'll be out of sync.
Thanks.
p.s. Handbrake works fine for those IFOs that don't seem to work in HDConvertToX

Where can I get older versions of HDC?
I really need the copy audio function in AVIs. Previous HDC can do it.
BTW, where is the ability to select multiple videos' function go?

Not HDC, but eac3to when it creates mp4 aac. And the latest mkvmerge loads by default the chapter information from mkv and mp4 files.

Hello Buzz,
First, I wanna join every people who congratulate you for this GUI developement effort, first with AutoMKV, and now with HDC.
This is a promising and very useful tool. Keep your way.
I am trying to encode my DVD collection with HDC, but I am encountering some issues.
I am using the last package and beta_version, plus the last x264 build (32 bits), and also followed the first page recommendations (including for Win 7).
Maybe I am missing something.
1) when choosing a VTS_01_0.IFO (ripped on hard drive), and hit the Analyze button, I am getting a message :
"Unable to compute correct Aspect Ratio. Please check"
Weird, because some of my movies' IFOs are OK with this analysis, and some other movies' IFO are not, but all of them can be compressed with AutoMKV ...
Rips look good as I can normally play these DVDs.
here is a 'make report' for one of them not functionning :

2) I decided to test a transfer of one DVD movie in a MKV container (demuxed with VOB-edit and muxed with MKVmerge-GUI, and subtitles transcoded in .srt with SubRip).
HDC is then able to analyze the new file (it's also true I indicated the AR at the MKV merge op).
But Audio and Subtitles selections are then limited to 3 tracks in HDC.
Actually, my movie had 4 subtitles that I wanna keep.
Do you have a number of tracks limit in the GUI ?
3) Also, I can't encode with Nero AAC both with IFOs or MKV files as input (Nero window is openning, lasting, and finally HDC buzzes for signaling a problem; no po-up message appearing).
Maybe, because this is Windows 7 64-bit, but compatibility mode for NeroAacEnc.exe doesn't change anything.
On the other hand, 'AAC Coding tech' encoder worked ...
Anyone have an idea on this ?

I am also running Win7 x64.
I use HDC occasionally for my DVD's and had 1 issue (on standard DVD's) encoding to MP4 with AAC using Nero for the AAC encoding. But that was only on 1 DVD. The others I've tried have worked fine.
Bluray is proving a bit more challenging.
With that said, what did you use to rip the dvd? I've used 2 different products with great success - Magic DVD Ripper and AnyDVD.

AnyDVD has a free trial.
If you can try to re-rip one of the discs that is giving you an issue, you could rule out that as a cause.

Yes I can try it later;
computer is too busy now for tests.
However, what's strange to me is I can currently encode these ripped DVDs with AutoMKV (x264 video & Nero AAC audio) and not with HDC.
How to explain that the same input source would work with one GUI, and not with the other one ?
I thought that HDC was using "grosso-modo" the same but updated encoding tools (x264 & NeroAacEnc).
Buzz, anything in the analysis process flow that may explain the difference ?

@sunfish
if your pgc selected has more than one film/episodes, or you are unsure about it, check Multi Episodes DVD.
In this way you will force HDC to extract only this film
@chengbin
download any build of HDC
point to your SINGLE AVI
allow muxing in MKV
now you will be copy your audio
@newstd
Unable to compute correct Aspect Ratio. Please check
is given when ifo don't explict gives ar
anyway i have update HDC to be more indulgente on AR (previusly there was accepted only 1:1 , 16/9 and 4/3)
Actually, my movie had 4 subtitles that I wanna keep.
Do you have a number of tracks limit in the GUI ?
absolutly not
BUT previus version of HDC will fail to parse incorrect log from eac3to (yes.. it's a bug of eac3to)
now i force eac3to to log to file (so.. download the latest beta)
Also, I can't encode with Nero AAC both with IFOs or MKV files as input (Nero window is openning, lasting, and finally HDC buzzes for signaling a problem; no po-up message appearing).
Maybe, because this is Windows 7 64-bit, but compatibility mode for NeroAacEnc.exe doesn't change anything.
i dont' know of any compatibility problems :confused:
How to explain that the same input source would work with one GUI, and not with the other one ?
the workflow of audio encoding is totally changed
@whipdancer
try disabling normalize
try disabling multithreaded avisynth
and... in your report is missing the loading of audio file
is present in correct avs ?

dont know if this helps those trying to encode dvds using win7 64bit but i have been doing it with very few hiccups for the last few weeks (see my previous post for the exception)
i have done 50+ movies with a mixture of x264 in:
mkv with copy 6ch ac3
mkv with 2ch mp3
mp4 with 6ch aac (nero)
mp4 with 2ch aac (nero)
mp4 with 2ch aac (coding)
all with consistantly good results using hdc with no special downloads or tweeks to admin rights etc.
some things i found didnt work consistantly:
trying to mux ac3 into mp4
extraction of subs is a bit hit & miss:
i have had hdc say sub was steam 1 when it was stream 3?
i regularly see eac3to say theres upto 10 sub tracks when i know i didnt rip the sub tracks??
you cant encode a dvd after encoding a bluray (reported earlier) without shutting down & starting up again
another thing i did find was that i would randomly have problems if i had ripped the dvd to an iso & then mounted the iso for hdc to do its thing. there seemed to be something not quite right with it (not tracked it down, just started ripping to folder and the problems went away)
dvdfab is great for ripping, as is anydvd... but dont run both!
cheers :)
oh, i have also had x264 crash a few minutes into encoding a bluray @ 1080p resolutions (tryed several versions of it but all crashed at differant times so i guessed it was my issue and went back to 720p resolutions again)

I know if I mux to MKV it will work, but it defeats the point of easy queuing feature (which seems to have disappeared)
Muxing takes a long time.
Can you add an auto mux feature, where the MKV muxing is the first job in the queue (instead of when analyzing, causing wait time)
Bring back the easy queuing feature + that = heaven.
