This is probably the best all in one solution for x264 encoding. Congratulation!

However, I came across a problem with audio delay. I 'm trying convert some MKV's that have delayed audio. Unfortunately I do not see any option that would allow me to put values manually. I do not believe this is done automatically with Analyze file, since I' m getting the same problem over and over.

Also, there should be progressive filter option under De-Interlace filters. There are some Mixed progressive options. The source file is progressive, I'm not sure if it's necessary to select any de-interlace filter in that case?

Thanks

I've noticed some problems with the Display Aspect Ratio in some AVI's I've made with several versions of HDC now. Here are the file specs:

DVD Video 720x480

HDC analysis says 1.7778 Display AR and 2.4243 for Movie AR based on the autocrop of 62 top and 66 bottom for an encoding size of 720x352. I've checked the Anamorphic Shape Box and it says Stream PAR: 853:720. This is correct, but for some reason it encodes at a different PAR. Here is the line from the batch file..

"C:\HDC\HDC_2.2.492.3692\applications\xvid_encraw.exe" -progress 50 -i "C:\HDC\HDC_2.2.492.3692\job3\hdconverttox_vts_01_1.avs" -avi "C:\HDC\HDC_2.2.492.3692\job3\hdconverttox_vts_01_1.avi" -max_bframes 2 -imin 3 -imax 16 -quality 6 -vhqmode 4 -qtype 0 -pmin 3 -pmax 16 -bmin 3 -bmax 16 -bquant_ratio 100 -bquant_offset 0 -vbvpeak 8000000 -vbvmax 4854000 -vbvsize 3145728 -nopacked -nochromame -bvhq -threads 3 -lumimasking -qmatrix "C:\HDC\HDC Support Files\Didees SixOfNine-HVS.cqm" -framerate 23.976 -threads 3 -bitrate 4000 -pass1 -turbo -par 10137600:8363520

This par calculates to 1.212 instead of 1.1852. This makes the file 876 pixels wide instead of 853. I have to use Mpeg4Modifier to correct the PAR in these files.

Changing the crop to 0 for top and bottom changes the batch par to -par 13824000:11404800. But this is still 1.212.
The PAR is based on the width of the movie correct? Why would changing the top/bottom crop affect the PAR value at all?

Here is the important info from the report file:

PGC : PGC 1. Length: 2:18:04:16 / chained=1
Codec Video: mpeg
Width / Heigh : 720 / 480
Framerate / Framecount: 29.970fps / 248272 frames
Duration(hh:mm:ss): 2:18:4
Aspect Ratio: 1.7778
Resized resolution: 720 / 480
Crop Values : 0:0:0:0
Activate: Anamorphic Resize

Start Video Configuration ->
Encoding Settings: XviD 2 Pass SAP ; Bitrate= 4000
Final Size: 0
Denoise Level: None
Set Manual Bitrate: 4000
Video Handling: Use Best Decoder
Deinterlace: Film NTSC (29.97->23.976)
-> End Video Configuration

The PAR is correct for an X264 version of the same file stored in an mkv container. The queue shows --sar 11059200:9331200 which is 1.185 for the X264 encode.

Am I not understanding something correctly? I guess I could do the encode from the queue and modify the value in the queue or modify the batch file, but it would be easier if the correct value was used.

I'm using version 2.2.526.3840 currently, but I've seen this on many versions I believe.

As always, thanks for the great program.

@talkto_menow

I think you want to use the FILM de-interlacer for progressive material. That's what I use. It will make the output 23.976 frames/second, which I believe is how movies are recorded to begin with.

talkto_menow

@gasnyder

In this case the source is TV show at 29.97fps (star trek) so I'm not sure if Film option applies.

what is the "make report" ?

advanced options, Utilities, Make report

If this is a Xvid file then I need xvid codec right. I have it installed. Sorry I am not sure what I should check?

you need a decoder. Xvid is a CoDec (COder/DECoder) but a fully working dss decoder is also needed.

I've tried disabling and then re-enabling Anamorphic Encoding but it doesn't appear to make a difference. The goal is to actually make an anamorphic encode, so I don't want to turn it off. I guess the main question is why isn't the PAR value shown in the GUI, the value that gets passed to the XVID encoder? It seems like some calculation isn't quite right. And like I mentioned above, the calculation seems to correct for an MKV encode.

@gasnyder

the base value of par (the whom from hdc start computing) are different between xvid and x264

XviD
1 = 1:1
2 = 12:11 (4:3 PAL)
3 = 10:11 (4:3 NTSC)
4 = 16:11 (16:9 PAL)
5 = 40:33 (16:9 NTSC)

X264
1 = 1:1
2 = 16:15 (4:3 PAL)
3 = 8:9 (4:3 NTSC)
4 = 64:45 (16:9 PAL)
5 = 32:27 (16:9 NTSC)

afaik these numbers are correct.

do you have different info/source ?

BHH

gasnyder
10th December 2009, 19:50
@buzzqw

Thank you for the information. That explains the difference. I don't really understand why those values would be different between the two. It seems that the PAR should be whatever makes the output file the same aspect ratio as the source file. For NTSC DVD's, the 720x480 at 16:9 should be 853:480 (at least as displayed on a computer). The x264 value of 32:27 seems correct to make the encoded 720 wide file play at 853 pixels wide. The XVID value makes it display at 872 pixels wide.

There must be some good reason for the difference. Now I remember why my old videos have what I consider to be the correct PAR. I was setting the PAR value to 32:27 in AutoMKV. My newer encodes with HDC have just been using what the program calculates and that is why the value doesn't match what I expect it to be.

Since that's the way it works, I'll simply modify the queue to pick the PAR value that I want.

Thanks again for the explanation.

I found 2 bugs:

1) When the source is AVC:
- DGIndexNV.exe should produce *.dga, not *.dgm as index file.
- And the .avs script should also be
#Source File
DGSource("C:\.........\job1\movie.dga")

2) When the source is VC-1, HDC should run DGIndexNV.exe, not DGVC1Index.exe

Added:
You may also replace DGSource() by DGMultiSource(), and eliminate calling the CUVIDServer

Why not dgm, doesn't it work?

Sharc

*.dgm didn't work in this case because the source is AVC.
AFAIK *.dga is allocated to AVC, *.dgv for VC-1 and *.dgm is reserved for mpeg-2.

buzzqw,

It would be nice if for SAVE FILE you could just set a directory path and the file name would default to the Open File name. (even if you had to seperate it into two fields Save Directory and File Name). When entering a big list of movies to process it is a pain to have to type in each one.

i have tried the option to have more bitrate but then the job is done in like 20minz else it take my pc 12/13h
*hdconvert just did 4minz from the whole video.

like if i want between 10à13mb what value should be better?

IMHO you have reached the qpmin value, 10.
if you want more bitrate you should manually add to command line --qpmin 2

and where i am suposed to put the crf profile?

that is just the same job is done in a few minz

"Y:\Downloads\HDconvertxx\applications\x264.exe" --crf 16 --pass 1 --bitrate 12538 --preset slow --threads auto --thread-input --sar 1:1 --output "Y:\Downloads\HDconvertxx\job1\hdconverttox_00007.h264" "Y:\Downloads\HDconvertxx\job1\hdconverttox_00007.avs"

Sorry perhaps I did not make myself clear - this does not work. I do not think it has been fixed (encoding Blu-ray and DVD in the same batch).

Is there a guide or FAQ anywhere as to the correct setup of FFDSHOW for HDC (and perhaps anything else required for HDConvertTOx to function properly). I personally dislike FFDSHOW - it has caused me far more problems than it solves.

More than likely I will have to go to a dual boot system - one for normal operation and the other for encoding. Far from ideal.

If this question has been asked and answered please direct me to where. When using automkv in the autoresize and bitrate/quality options you can set it to 100% Can this be done in HDC? I tried 1 pass quality with CQ set to 1, but the file ended up being 14g compared to automkv's file being 2g. When it says CQ of 18 equals transparent quality does that mean the same as the original? I just started to try and convert my dvd collection and want good quality in a small size. I am happy with the quality output of the files made with automkv using 2 pass balanced, use crf value for autoresize routines: 20, and specific quality: 100%. But I am having audio sync issues, and since HDC replaced automkv I need some help.

Thanks in advance

Buzzqw,

I want to thank you for HDConvert. I've used BD-RB, but it sometimes errors out. Your interface has worked for me where others would not. Granted, I've had codec issues, restored from a virgin image on my PC, had the "Invalid arguments to function "isRGB" error a few times. Issues with VC1 files......but have been using your beta (2.2.536) for the past three encodes (Poltergeist 1, Die Hard 2 & Mr & Mrs Smith)with no issues.

I also like that I can select 1 pass or 2 pass. When my encodes (In extreme quality 2-pass) are completed. I check the x264 settings you've implemented with Media Info. Most of what I use in Handbrake, you also use. Good job. Speaking of Handbrake, you ever though of a advanced tab like theirs for th euser to select and change things him/herself?

Also, Am I correct that x264 has a fast first-psss option on a 2-pass encode?...If so, could that also be implemented?

Thanks Again

If you want good quality and a small filesize you are better off using 2pass encoding instead of 1 pass crf or cq. 2 pass will give you the best quality for a specific file size. I suggest you choose a filesize you want to shoot for and then adapt your 2 pass bitrate to hit that file size.

And CQ=1 is just insane. You getting a 14 GB file is exactly what I would expect of you using such a ridiculous setting.

1 pass modes are for people who want a constant quality, but don't really care about the filesize. Since you care about file size, go with 2 pass.

Edit:

It is called "turbo". Usually it is already on by default, but if you want to manually activate it, simply edit the "HDConvertToX_profile.txt" file your self to include the --turbo option.

I've run into a couple of issues regarding HDC. Overall, it seems to work great 90% of the time, but there are certain times when it seems to just do the wrong thing. I have two specific cases.

One case regards audio not being muxed properly into destination MKV files. It usually gets muxed fine if I'm using the "Use eac3to as demuxer and decoder". But if I use any of the others, the compressed audio file is generated correctly, but the file the "mkvmerge" step attempts to use is a different file. For example, the converted file might be "job1\hdencodertox-pid80.ogg", but the file that mkvmerge tries to use is "job1\hdencodertox-pid2.ogg". Obviously, I'm using OGG encoding.

The other case regards IFO processing, specifically of PGC 1 of one of the .IFOs of a disc. When you process any PGC other than PGC1, the batch file that gets generated is different from the one you get for PGC1. When processing other PGCs, the first step uses VStrip to pull specific data from the .IFO and .VOB files into a temporary .VOB file. All other commands, .avs scripts, and .d2v scripts reference only this temporary .VOB. This makes sense; you're trying to extract just the specific data from the .IFO, so you need a step that pulls exactly and only this data out.

The problem is that this step is not being run for PGC1. Basically, anytime I try to extract PGC1 from an IFO, I get the entire .VOB sequence. Now don't get me wrong: I am happy with a way to convert an entire IFO, rather than doing it piecewise. But sometimes, I really do want PGC1 and only PGC1. It would be great if there were separate selections for "PGC1 only" and "Get everything." Have I missed an option somewhere, or is this currently possible?

Also, one minor issue. Sometimes, I use MakeMKV to rip discs rather than just copying the .IFOs and .VOBs directly. That means that, sometimes, my source data is .mkv files. I've noticed that, whenever I do this, I find that the chapter information gets stripped out. HDC doesn't use mkvextract to pull chapters from the source and put it into the destination. It'd be great if it did this (or again, have I missed an option somewhere?).

I didn't really know what the option did, so I never much bothered with it. I'll give it a shot.

Here's the make report for the Pid issue. See how the third line of the queue generates "hdencodertox-pid.ogg", but the last line searches for "hdencodertox-pid2.ogg".

buzzqw, there is a bug in HDC where it will change the "No Autocrop = 1" to 0, and I've seen it many times, but I don't know what caused it. Any ideas?

buzzqw, how can I change the audio settings? For example in LAME if I don't want --b 32 or --lowpass 16.5, how do I remove that permanently? I don't want to change the command line every single time.

Thanks.

try using a higher bitrate. HDC will not enforce these parameters, it pass to lame your selected bitrate and encoding mode.

Pid issue. See how the third line of the queue generates "hdencodertox-pid.ogg", but the last line searches for "hdencodertox-pid2.ogg".

thanks, please try to redownload the beta update

the hdconverttox.ini is saved only when you hit Save settings.

Do you have any problems ?

@Sharc
please try the new beta. now using DGI

When using 1 pass quality, does the speed/quality slider have any effect?

buzzqw
21st December 2009, 16:07
Yes!

the crf encoding mean you aim a perceived quality , but slower preset will achieve this quality with less bitrate

When it says you recommend not to select extreme value, does that mean the far left or right? Or the extreme quality in the middle?

And thanks for all the support, a lot of people put their stuff out and don't bother to help people to use it.

buzzqw

extreme values (too left or too right) could be not too savvy to use

just think about how fast you want your encoding.

usually the middle range gives the good quality at right encoding speed

Hi,

I have read the documentation, but there is one thing I do not understand: I have a 24fps inputfile, and want to convert to m2ts 50Hz, I can tick the checkbox in the Audio-Folder to convert audio to PAL. The documentation says that I have to select the same for my videofile - but where can I do that? I find no such option.

buzzqw

you should use the deinterlace box list.

like changefps to 25

I have the dreaded Invalid arguments to function "isRGB" on two Rambo movies. I know they are VC-1. I have read the guide here:

http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1318934

Still no luck. I even D/L the latest NVTools (since buzz said it was good for VC1), put all the files in the apps directory, copied over the DLL to the filter directory....still erroring

Found a post where Jdobbs recommended installing WMP11, nada...changed all the ffdshows with VC1 disabled (after installing WMP11) and with it set to WMP9

Any help would be appreciated

TIA

P.S.

Buzz, could you allow the user to decrease the x264 compression and the numbers of frames for Visual Crop..to speed it up if need be? SOmetimes takes 4 minutes on my AMD quad core for Visual Crop.

Lastly, your missing on the bitrate calculator any audio bitrate above 320 kbps. In MEGUI, if you select DTS or AC3, does it assume 6 channels?..would adding a option to input how many channels help? Under total size, could you add BD5 and BD8 options (like MeGUI)?

Thanks
