View Full Version : AutoMKV 0.93a - (DVD/TS/AVI/AVS to X264/XviD/WVC1 into MKV/MP4/WMV) update 30/12/2007

I made a copy of the ConstantQuality-CRF.xml profile, renaming it _ConstantQuality-CRF.xml (the "_" forces the file to rise to the number one spot at the top of the profile listing).
However, now AutoMKV wont use the Quantizer values from automkv.ini or any UserProfile.ini !
I have to manually change the quantizer value in the "_ConstantQuality-CRF.xml" template.
Using profiles to change the quantizer makes sense since the *.xml is merely a template.
I tried 0_ConstantQuality-CRF.xml (also wont work) while Q22-ConstantQuality-CRF.xml works fine.
I guess 0-ConstantQuality-CRF.xml is the way to go... AutoMKV never fails to fascinate !!!

but AutoMKV remember the setting : TEMPO of the last session.. even in the textbox are at NONE.. in this test.
true and correct. the advanced audio settings are remembered till opened again.
to reset ... simply open the window and close it
(btw added to preset 24 to 23.976)
@delacroixp
"_CQ_" is missing....
rename to _ConstantQuality-CRF_CQ_.xml or similar...
@spotter
about dgindex ?

it's the same as "spotter 4" , plus timestretch preset for 24 fps to 23.976 fps
you will need NEW DGINDEX 1.5.0 rc2 (as all 0.93 beta editions)

the "I'm guessing you didn't hook up the delay for the 2nd "audio" track" was aimed at buzzqw
basically, for all my one audio track encodes, the beta w/ a 7s delay after virtualdub quits to check audio track size works great. For my 2 Audio track encodes, the first one always works, the second one seems to "usually" fail due to neroaac issues, hence my "guess".

@BlackDog21
the key is "unlimited file size"
if you want quality but with a reasonable size just select PS3_41 profile AND in advanced settings check "Specify quality" to 80
BHH
That helped. Reduced the size to ~1.6GB.
Back to the widescreen, I tried muxing settings for both 2.35 and then 16:9, neither produced desired results. 2.35 was too narrow and 16:9 left a black bar within the movie area on top and bottom (if that makes sense.) It seems like each setting is custom for each movie. How do I use the same settings to get the same results for multiple movies so I can run a batch? Or am I just dreaming?
I also noticed that the resulting files do not show on my 360 so I can't play them. On my PC I can play the file in WMP, but they don't show up in the library in WMP. I also have the Zune software but it can't play the file either and also does not show the movie in it's library. Any idea what's going on here?
Thanks.

@BlackDog21
in next update (.. well present even in beta5.. just above) i have changed a little bit the DAR computing.. now should be ok (even if was remotely linked to your problem)
about xbox360/zune issues .. i don't have these candy.. but .. try analyzing a working mp4 with Avinaptic and one not working .. and check for difference

BlackDog21 you must disable Bframe pyramid in the PS341 profile for the videos to be playable on the Xbox 360, well that's what worked for me at least.
Go into the profiles folder and change PS3_41 profile to the setting below
<BFramePyramid>false</BFramePyramid>
Oddly enough my PS3 like the Xbox 360 would not play any videos encoded with the PS3 41 profile in it's normal state after turning off BFramePyramid they worked.
The Zune software only streams H.264 main profile to the console and will refuse any non-compatible video into it's library.
To side step the problem of that you can use WMP11 with a registry patch (http://a8t8.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2518DD508BB713E8!156.entry) which adds MP4 support and you can then stream H.264 MP4's to the Xbox 360 with that (PS3 too in case anyone wondering).

Thanks for the help. I'll give that a shot.
It looks like the 360 only supports 5.1 audio with AVI or WMV, though. So no H.264 for me (at least for most videos.) I'm going to try one with constant quality, original width and original 6 channel audio and see if that gives me the widescreen with 6 channel XVID. Does anyone have any tips for XVID for the 360?

Which SAP? I tried 2_Pass_SAP and it came out pretty grainy. Guess I'll try the SAP_Scure.

SAP_Scure didn't work too well either (grainy). Using Constant_Quality what Quantitizer settings do you recommend?
buzzqw

sap scure is to use with very dark movies
if your source is grainy.. try with another filter
like degrainmedian or hqdn3d

I have brought this up before, but would like to ask again...Is it possible to include support for mp4 fonts when creating .mp4 files with text streams? It's just 2 extra command-line parameters to mp4box...

From the MP4box documentation:
http://gpac.sourceforge.net/doc_mp4box.php explains the command-line parameters (as I'm sure you were aware) and http://gpac.sourceforge.net/doc_ttxt.php explains timed text streams.
Some notable comments from the latter:
A compliant decoder shall be able to understand the default font names "Serif", "Sans-serif" and "Monospace".
Seeing as it is recommended to use sans-serif fonts for subtitles, if you want to default your ttxt stream to 24 pt sans-serif, you would use:
-add my_srt_file.srt:font=sans-serif:size=24
The default is 18 pt Serif, which is both ugly and unreadable on a TV screen.
buzzqw
24th December 2007, 15:09
fyi.. automkv allow SRT subs only when selected as external subs...
the default subs are graphical idx/sub
anyway i will check the documentation for fonts
thanks

What are the recommendations for running on a dual core cpu? I noticed that threads=0, can I configure this? Also, are there any special requirements for avisynth to use multiple cores?
buzzqw
24th December 2007, 17:27
effectively with sans font is more readable.
Added in next update
about threads=0 , if ZERO automkv will automatically compute the number of threads based on number of cpu.. in fact if you look at taskmanager/cpu load during encoding it will be maximized (expecially with x264)
about MT plugin there are some tips on automkv wiki.. i haven't investigate much about.. since i have 1 cpu only.. maybe for next pc upgrade

The source isn't grainy, the resulting encoded video is grainy. I don't think SAP is what I'm looking for. I'm trying to get high quality that will stream to the 360 well. Should I keep trying with CQ and find a quantitizer I like or do you recommend another profile?

I found a bug.
I just add a item into the queue.
close automkv, reopen it.. double click on the item in the queue.. the Option : Auto Asjust CRF is not check (and it was before I close automkv)
and the "Add to line : " weren't remebered too.

First of all, thanks for all your answers buzzqw, they've been very helpful.
I have two more questions:
First, regarding AQ - not to sound like a complete n00b, but what does the AQ feature exactly do? I tested Constant_Quality vs. AQ_Constant_Quality and I noticed a significant increase in size, but the quality of the AQ version was indeed better, so I think it's worth the extra space. Now, from what I was able to find, I understand that the AQ feature sharpens those very dark spots in movies, where you would normally see those annoying huge squares. Please, let me know if that's correct and any additional information you can give me about AQ I'd also appreciate. Also, please let me know if in your opinion it is worth the extra MBs, considering that I'm not that much worried about size. Would you use it? Other people can feel free to answer as well.
My second question is, again, about using a CQ profile. You told me that the "specify quality" advanced setting has priority over the quantitizer setting of the CQ profile. Well, which one do you recommend that I use to adjust quality? Should I leave the quantitizer at 18, which is the default and just adjust the quality percentage, or should I keep the quality percentage constant (say at 90%) and adjust the quantitizer or does it matter at all? What do you recommend? Which one affects the quality more/better?
Thanks.

@BlackDog21
sap scure is very light as profile, maybe is worth try giving more bitrate or trying a cq 3 (or cq 2) profile
@survivant001
fixed! thanks
@Encoder888
not all movie need AQ. AQ patch resolve blockness on flat surface, not only black..
Is to use only when needed.. or.. use always but in a light approach.
I hope that Dark Shirari patch (AQ v3) will be included.. so there will not need of different profile.. just to add an option (if i found space in gui ;) )
and.. about Specify quality and quantitizer.. you may know the logaritmic formula that bind crf value to cq value of xvid.. but many user don't even know the upper limit of crf ... even more think that a crf of 51 is better then crf 16...
so.. use the specify quality.. when you are found of x264.. happily switch to crf :)
Merry Xmas!

@buzzqw
That's great man, thanks for the answers again. I think I'm gonna use AQ every time, I mean you can't really just use it in moderation, it's you either use it or not, and I've noticed just a general sharpening of backgrounds, which tend to be block-ed, when I do use it, which is great, and it does much better of a job than the removegrain filter, so... I think I'll just use the AQ_Constant_Quality profile from now on. But it will be awesome if you could add AQ as just an advanced option in the next upgrade.
And just out of curiosity, you've probably been asked this a thousand times, but when can we expect the final 0.93 patch ? Just approximately, I mean...
Merry xmas to you too... It's already xmas day in central US so I should probably be getting to bed soon... Should have drunk less too lol :)
buzzqw
25th December 2007, 10:11
the main problem with 0.93 is the new dgindex.. since audio part changed a lot.
i need a lot of testing.. but.. there is a lack of it
the thread of 0.93 beta is just plain dead
I will probably release 0.93 after christmass holyday.. just before new year...
don't expect a big release... just some fine tuning ;)

I had done a preview test using the manual crop and resize and specified an endpoint in the "trim from" field. I probably saved settings at some point. Going back to using Autocrop I was getting the first few seconds of a series of MKVs which was perplexing me. When the "Enable Manual Crop and Resize" is unchecked
http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/5330/delmv4.gif (http://imageshack.us)
This line remains in the AutoMKV.ini:
Motion Levels = 1,2,3,4,4,3,2,2
Trim from = 1233
FPS = 29.969999The "Trim From" line should probably be removed from the AutoMKV.ini when "Enable Manual Crop and Resize" is unchecked as the field where the value would be visible (after "Specify Width") is greyed out and appears deactivated.

Hi all,
i tried to encode Hitch trailer which is in mpeg2 , using automkv , and my pc stay on "computing size mb" mode,even with older versions of automkv.
With other files it's working fine.
I tried this trailer with megui and was ok.
Any help would be great.
Thanks

Is there a single executable which will contain all of those so I can install it?

Ok i understand , i thought was implemanted on the soft , but i have to load the plugin in my avs script , right ?
i just tried the build.
If i "trim" the trailer , the encode start , and the result is fine.
If i let the entire trailer , the computer stay on the "computing and analysing..." state.

If i let the entire trailer , the computer stay on the "computing and analysing..." state.
it's working.. it's working.. let's wait 5 minutes
in this phase automkv will try to compute width/height/lenght/crop...
please wait some minutes.. if after 10 min.. is blocked.. send me the hitch.avs :)
@artisticcheese
so.. if you have installed all required software .. the last possibility is to check "Use FFmpegSource" (or if you have several gb to spare "PreProcess to Lossless")

@zelos
it's working.. it's working.. let's wait 5 minutes
in this phase automkv will try to compute width/height/lenght/crop...
please wait some minutes.. if after 10 min.. is blocked.. send me the hitch.avs :)
@artisticcheese
so.. if you have installed all required software .. the last possibility is to check "Use FFmpegSource" (or if you have several gb to spare "PreProcess to Lossless")

so.. xvid_encraw will fail and x264 no.. (that's strange)
can you try to encode with x264 profile ?
thanks!

The original movie is already x264, do you want to reencode it in MKV container and x264 codec again?

A big thanks to those few users that have helped on 0.93 debug. :thanks:
Changelog:
ADDED: Check to control if virtualdubmod was never launched (suggestion by BobGray)
ADDED: Support for "--fpel-cmp" and "--me-prepass". Set <fpel-cmp> to something like satd, and <me-prepass> to true for activating (thanks to Dark Shikari)
ADDED: Queue and Save Configuration now save also: Force Mux AR, Hight Quality First Pass, Do the Third Pass, Force Mux H*W (suggestion by Die's Man)
ADDED: -threads option when using ffmpeg.exe
ADDED: -psp muxing switch
ADDED: AC3 audio to AVI container (suggestion by mindfreak13)

Hi all and happy new year.
I tried to build an Mkv x264 from my Flight Plan dvd. I'm porting any dvd under my Media Portal htpc.
I've used a 2 pass encoding, copy original for Audio (an ac3 5:1 italian track) , auto crop for resize (it's a 2,35:1 film), 1/4 dvd preset. The result have the audio hastes for about 2,100-2,200 seconds. I used dvddecrypter to rip the man movie (about 1 h e 34 seconds).
I use last 0.92 beta. Could I obtain a better result with 0.93 new version.
