Yesterday I attempted to rip my copy of O Brother Where Art Thou using only AutoMKV. I typically rip the discs myself using either DVD Fab Decrypter or RipIt4Me, but I decided to give AutoMKV a shot.

So, I loaded it into my DVD drive (an external Plextor PX-712UF drive), selected the drive from the drop-down, hit the check DVD drive button, it selected the right PGC, and I set my settings and hit Go.

Unfortunately, the rip process never completed. DVD Fab Express loaded, and the process was going, but it was running extremely slowly. Watching the process in Process Explorer showed it was using basically 0% CPU time (it was "blipping" up to 1-2% every so often, but generally was at 0%), but the I/O chart was very interesting -- It was "spiking" up and down regularly like a EKG readout. I checked, and the file sizes in the output directory were slowly climbing, so it was doing something. At first, I thought the process was stalled because it was progressing so slowly...

Either way, I was curious, so I let the process run overnight. After running for over 16 hours solid, it was still only about 2/3 completed. I killed the task this morning because I was tired of waiting.

So today I ran the same disc, in the same drive, on the same machine through DVD Fab Decrypter (the current freebie version) on it's own and it completed in about 25 minutes.

Not sure what's going on here, but something was screwy. The logs were unfortunately completely empty on disk, so I don't have much to show other than that. I'm happy to run the test again if you show me what I can post that'll help!

@glynor

about ripping:
I loaded it into my DVD drive
good
selected the drive from the drop-down
good
hit the check DVD drive button
good

it selected the right PGC, and I set my settings and hit Go.
bad
why bad?
after ripping i select directly the main movie BUT if you select the pgc (and check USE this pgc or use this ifo) automkv will parse all those vobs and extract only the pgc you select.
The pgc fuction is to use with episodic dvd not in main movie selection

Any chance we can get DV?
just to specify: take an "file" and encode TO DV ?
if so.. i must check ffmpeg if dv is supported in encoding, no problem to add

Nope... Sorry. I think you misread my comment (or I mis-represented what I had done). I said IT picked the correct PGC, not that I did. I had Process this PGC and Process this IFO unchecked.

Just to note... I've now re-tried the operation with the same computer and same disc and same settings and it appears to be working properly. Not sure what's going on now!! :confused:

EDIT: Actually... Interesting results.

As I mentioned, I ripped the DVD myself using DVD Fab Decrypter and then I encoded it to a x264 MKV. Worked perfectly. Then, immediately and without closing/reopening AutoMKV, I attempted to re-rip the disc using AutoMKV. I kept all the settings the same as what I had just used, but selected my drive from the dropdown and hit "Check DVD". It properly selected the F:\Video_TS\VTS_01_0.IFO, I changed the "output file name", and I hit go. Interestingly, even though it is a CSS protected DVD, AutoMKV didn't actually launch DVD Fab Express but proceeded directly into the Dgindex step. I manually "restored" the Dgindex window and (unsurprisingly) the video display window was black.

I was fairly sure something was going wrong so I Killed the AutoMKV process tree, deleted the orphaned temp directory, and started over. After "launching fresh", AutoMKV properly launched DVD Fab Express and is currently properly decrypting the disc. So... That was pretty odd!

Yes. That's exactly what I mean. I wouldn't use it often, but it can come in handy sometimes for converting to weird formats that can't be handled by my favorite converter... AutoMKV of course!

i almost gone AutoMKV working for converting MKV to WMV. There's just one problem: there's no sound.
Can anyone help me?

DGIndex's window is always black for me. I can tell if its running or not because on a running DGIndex:

The window title wont be just "DGIndex" but "DGIndex - VOB 1_1..." something about the file its processing.
There will be a minimized, inactive window in the lower left corner of the screen (minimized to a small title bar, not to the taskbar). The tile of this window is "Information" and it is not possible to restore this window I find.
The hard drive will be churning.

Were any of these symptoms occurring?

I don't mean to be insulting, but you did remember to select audio tracks, right?
Can you post the log file?

PlayWithFire

no, you are not insulting at all
but yes, i did select an audio track.
i should elaborate a little bit. Some sound does come thought, but mostly background noise. It's really strange.

i will post my log file when i get home tonight

Did you choose a 5.1 channel audio track as your source but a 2 channel audio format? Sometimes I have weird effects with the loudness of vocals in relation to background noise when playing a 5.1 channel audio track over a two channel system.

Use the "code" tags when you post the log, if you attach a text file we'll have to wait for it to be approved, and if you just paste without the tags the word wrap will make it harder to read.

I've been trying occasionally to do a grayscale encoding using the method you gave me here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=969510#post969510), but so far it's not completing successfully.

seems that DirectShowSource is unable to access your file,

create an avs script with written only
DirectShowSource("D:\Video\TV\Lost\Lost.S03E13.720p.HDTV.x264-CTU.mkv",fps=23.976044,convertfps = true,video=false)
and open with media player classic, are you able to hear sound ?

@nx6
please don't blame me... but
grayscale() doesn't exists... use
greyscale() :p

btw thanks for answering and suggesting to other user!
(yesterday i was busy with some redolog/controlfile of one of our oracle servers...)

In programming... there is no room for "syntax" errors...
I'm dying to see how your 'grayscale' encode pans out... it's pretty exciting...

You don't perhaps know how to use "single channel mono (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=113811&page=66)"... I tried to downmix... (in BeSweet/Belight) but the new file is larger than the stereo-only... it still seams to be creating 2 channels, rather than one... albeit 'mono channels'...

Try a 100 MB clip first... perhaps you can rip just one chapter.

I've been trying some seriously HQ 2-pass encodes since I now know how large (proportionally) each episode of BoB should be... I used the first chapter from the first episode which still turned out to be 400 MB...

Anyway I tried the "HighQuality-Insane" profile set to the same filesize as the 22-CQ-CRF encode... I normally got 6fps... now I got 2fps (x2 - for the 2nd pass)... so it took six-times longer... Funny enough... there was no significant difference in quality though I will have a closer look later...
I usually look for differences in small text in the intro... especially the 'diagonal leg' of the capital 'R'... maybe even in red... but I could see nothing.

For maximum quality... what kind of profile/filters/settings do you recommend ??? I'm looking for Q20-CRF quality on a Q22-CRF budget...

If I save my "Original" settings AutoMKV restarts with the Resize Filter option set to "SimpleResize(neutral soft)" instead of NONE.

Perhaps
IF someone chooses the 'AutoCrop Only' option... THEN

IF using MKV container... THEN
no resizing takes place and muxing switches are automatically set.

ELSE resize accordingly.

You mean the greyscale encode? :D

No, I do actually. I just forgot to set it on the audio settings when I did the "normal" encoding so I was purposefully leaving it on stereo with this grayscale attempt as well for consistency (since I would be comparing the final movie sizes).

Since the size of the "color" one was 1.66GB (@CRF:18), I know the final encoding I do when I finish playing around will be at a lower quality setting anyway, I can downmix it on that one. But I'll just use the default CRF profile for now (to avoid anymore hiccups like accidentally deleting brackets). :D

UPDATE !!! 0.80

new full package

http://www.64k.it/andres/data/a/AutoMKV080_NORIP.rar (12 mb)
http://www.64k.it/andres/data/a/AutoMKV080.rar (12.5 mb)

0.80 Full Package 29/03/2007
ADDED: MediaInfo. AutoMKV will use it as last resort to analyse input file
ADDED: New WMCmd.vbs. More stable and robust
ADDED: In Log file the AR reported by DgIndex
ADDED: WMV WVC1 preset based on Zambelli post http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=123812 , these preset are 2 pass encoding (Preset_Fast_WVC1.xml, Preset_Good_WVC1.xml, Preset_Better_WVC1.xml, Preset_Best_WVC1.xml, Prest_Insane_WVC1.xml)
ADDED: Normalize() to audio avs file. On my pc (p4 2.8ghz 1gb ram) took 10 minutes to analyze film like Matrix before start encoding, wait and go to drink a tea.
ADDED: FFmpeg.exe as encoder. If xvid_encraw/x264/wmcmd isn't able to process input file (not on dvd input) ffmpeg will try to encode to desidered codec/container/width (not autocrop sorry...). Manual crop will be parsed and applyed
ADDED: Multi Encoder!. If a file named "flv" or "msmpeg4v2" or "mpeg2video" or "rv10" is present in automkv folder then automkv will be force to used ffmpeg.exe to these format. (not woriking on dvd or avs input)
ADDED: VirtualDub (1.7.1) as launcher of SoundOut plugin. More support to "strange" avs audio file
FIXED: MP4 was recognized as AUDIO. Now is Video
FIXED: XviD_CQ profile is now a true CQ. BQuantRatio is set to 1 (suggestion by weaver4)
FIXED: In X264 the -ref was applyed two times (thanks to Demeragon)
FIXED: New Audio setting for WMV (more compatible with new WMCmd.vbs)
FIXED: AACgain doesn't work for installation path with space (like c:\program files\automkv\... ) (thanks to vgiozo)
FIXED: Some tuning to audio downmixing when using WMV
FIXED: Moved Force Mux AR to Muxing Options and Anamorphic Encoding to Aspect Ratio Options (suggestion by delacroixp)
FIXED: Some layout change to Log file
FIXED: Substituted RemoveGrain.dll to RemoveGrainS.dll (fix Athlon issue). If you have a more powerfull CPU delete this file and from http://home.arcor.de/kassandro/RemoveGrain/RemoveGrain.rar take the DLL version your CPU supports (RemoveGrainSSE2.dll or RemoveGrainSSE3.dll). Same job with RepairSSE2.dll or RepairSSE3.dll
FIXED: Some tuning to WMV bitrate calculator
FIXED: If profile is CRF or CQ, and user select Go Unlimited Size, the width is now set to "Original" (suggestion by nx6)
UPDATE: NicAudio to 2.0.0.2, DgIndex to 1.4.7 beta 17, X264 v635, ffmpeg.exe v8435

NOTE: i tryed to add support with ffmpeg to encode in DV and SNOW but without success. There are 2 sample encoding command line: where is the error ?

DV: ffmpeg.exe -i movie.avi -vcodec dvvideo -target dv -b 3000000 -cropleft 2 -croptop 72 -cropright 2 -cropbottom 72 -s 640x352 -r 25.000 -acodec pcm_u16le -ac 2 -ar 48000 test_dv.avi

SNOW: ffmpeg.exe -i movie.avi -vcodec snow -b 200000 -pass 1 -r 25.000 -acodec mp3 -ac 2 -ab -ar 44100 test_snow.snow

@delacroixp

try with "spresso" filter or the Kiss method (keep it simple/stupid) "Deen().Undot()"

@PlayWithFire
do proprierties of file, is 5.1 ? (and try this update!)

@buzzqw:

I see one error with the snow command-line:
-ab needs a value (and there isn't any specified).
ex: -ab 128000 (for 128kbps).

I'm not sure about the absence of -ab for the DV command-line though, it may be a predetermined value due to the use of the "pcm_u16le" audio codec.

without the value it will use the 1536 (iirc)

Any help is appreciated. I will try again tonight with .80, but nothing jumped out at me in the change log as helping with this specific issue.

Two things I found with this build (0.80), one very small and one big.

1) The first time you use this, VirtualDub will give you a warning that you have to click through and until you do it pauses all execution. This warning is minimized though so if you wander off you might not ever see it. No huge deal, but just be aware.

2) When I'm ripping from an episodic VOB/IFO on my hard drive (ripped from DVD using DVD Fab Decrypter), and I've selected a second audio track, and I encode directly (by clicking the "Start Encoding" button) everything goes smoothly. However, if I add the job to the Queue, the second audio track gets forgotten somehow and does not get processed. I discovered this today with 0.79a and tried it again with 0.80 and no change. I have no idea if this only applies to jobs similar to the one I'm processing, or if it applies to all jobs sent to the Queue (I've only tried the one type so far). Either way, with five or six different jobs I've tried the second audio track is not getting done for jobs sent to the Queue.

Also... A couple of little questions:

I'm not real clear on when we have to check the new Process this PGC/IFO options vs. when we don't. The select PGC combobox is always active on the Basic Settings tab and always seems to list all of the titles when I select a IFO file as the Input. If I'm ripping an Episodic DVD, and I don't check the Process this PGC/IFO options, but I choose one of the titles from the Select PGC combobox, what happens? Is my selection in the combobox ignored (and if so, why isn't the combobox greyed out)? Something else?

My other question is more of a request. I realize you generally dislike working on the Queued Jobs section of the application, buzzqw. However, it'd be really keen if we could get two things:

a) In the Queued Job listing tab, can you move the Movie Name field over to the far left of the window (just to the right of the Input File field maybe)? When I'm trying to see what jobs I've queued, the Movie Name field is generally the most important one, and it's way over to the right where I can't see it. Alternatively, if we could re-order those ourselves (and have it "stick") that'd be swell.

b) It'd be super-keen if we could re-order the job list. I realize this might be some serious work though... But keep it in mind. Quite often if I decide that one job is more important than others, I have to delete all of the jobs in order to move one up a few "steps". I imagine I could also do it by closing AutoMKV and then manually re-numbering the queue#.ini files, but I've never tried (and that's certainly less than intuitive).

Oh, and thanks a lot for trying on the DV encoding. Sorry that I can't be any help with the command line though! I'm no FFMPEG ninja...

@Shark_jlc

the script miss the audio=XXXX (must be just after movie= )
what audio tracks have you selected ???

@glynor

The select PGC combobox is always active on the Basic
in dvd mode (main film only), without checking use this pcg and process this ifo is used only for determine the pgc of subtitle extraction

Process this ifo: is to check before selectin the ifo (on already ripped dvd).
Normaly automkv even if you point to a specific ifo will select the BIGGEST ifo, and so the vobs belonging to this ifo will be processed.

BUT if you check (before manual selecting the ifo) Use this IFO automkv will process only the vobs belonging to this SPECIFIC IFO. (example you select Video_TS.ifo... then only Video_TS_0X.vob will be processed)

The Use this PCG is to use with dvd that contain only one pgc (one set of vobs) BUT this vobs contain multiple episodes.
So you select the ifo (before have checked use this ifo), AND then CHECK USE THIS PGC, go in main tab and select from combo list the PGC (episode) to process.
After the FULL film is ripped (if needed) autoMKV will SCAN all this vobs and will create a NEW VOB that contain ONLY this PGC and then will work on this vob

I hope to be clear! (someone will copy this to the wiki... ?)

about missing audio: thanks.. i will look at this!

about queue... :scared: ... i will try ... but as you well understud i don't like working on it too much...

The only thing in the drop down typically, as I try to rip the dvd's with only the audio track I want to use. I can verify tonight though.

VirtualDub has been crashing on me when trying to convert the audio track (track 1) in a conversion to NeroAAC for me (two different occasions with two different "episodes" from the same DVD rip). I haven't completed the encode yet (the last time I killed it after VirtualDub crashed), but it looks like it might still be working...

Here's the relevant details of the encode from the log:

14:12:55 Track Language 1: English (AC3 2ch, 0xBD 0x80) [0,1,2,3,4,5,6]
14:12:55 Audio Codec 1: Nero AAC
14:12:55 Audio Quality 1: 0.50
14:12:55 Audio Channel 1: Stereo
14:12:55 Advanced Audio Settings DUMP Track 1
14:12:55 Nero Option Profiles: AUTO --- Encoding Mode: Quality
14:12:55 CCT Option Profiles: AUTO --- Channel Options: AUTO

Nothing really appears to be showing up in the log related to the crash though, and the VirtualDub error message didn't really provide much info (other than that VirtualDub had crashed)... What else can I post to help?

EDIT: Here's the mkvaudio.bat and mkvaudio.avs from this run: http://www.geocities.com/ri0n/automkv/vdub_audio_crash.zip

i have no idea, how do i find out?

If you're playing the file in VLC Media Player, go to View->Stream and Media Info, then click on the "Advanced information" tab.

If you're playing the file in Media Player Classic with ffdshow, go to File->Properties and click on the "Details" tab.

the crash happen early or while encoding ?

i have (again) encode audio track of matrix with your script and vdub don't blame...

please try change (inside mkvmaudio.bat)
"C:\Program Files\AutoMKV\exe\BeSweet\vdub.exe" /x "C:\video\projects\temp\mkvmaudio.avs" to

"C:\Program Files\AutoMKV\exe\BeSweet\ffmpeg.exe" -y -t 1 -i "C:\video\projects\temp\mkvmaudio.avs" "C:\video\projects\temp\junk.wav"

and relaunch mkvmaudio.bat, but i supposce could be "damaged" your ac3 file (bad rip ?)

I believe right as the encode was finishing. The encode where VirtualDub crashed (that caused me to post before) actually just finished all the way, and the audio appears to work perfectly (for both tracks). I can't hear any problems with it at all.

The only real issue then is that the error message VDub threw up blocked AutoMKV from completing until I clicked "OK".

please try change (inside mkvmaudio.bat)
"C:\Program Files\AutoMKV\exe\BeSweet\vdub.exe" /x "C:\video\projects\temp\mkvmaudio.avs" to

"C:\Program Files\AutoMKV\exe\BeSweet\ffmpeg.exe" -y -t 1 -i "C:\video\projects\temp\mkvmaudio.avs" "C:\video\projects\temp\junk.wav"

Since the encode worked, I'd guess the AC3 file was okay (though maybe it has a small error in it near the end). I'm actually testing re-encoding the same file right now and I'll watch to see when the error comes up. Interestingly, in the progress dialog that comes up, it lists:

Source Position: [00.12:55] of [00:00:05] Speed 10.74 x Realtime

Which appears that it doesn't have an accurate total length.

Okay... My test re-encode just finished. The error comes up after VirtualDub is completely finished converting (and after the 5 second auto-close countdown on the progress dialog finishes). The error lists the crash details as:

An out-of-bounds memory access (access violation) occurred in module 'SoundOut'...
...reading address 00000004.

I also have a "crashinfo.txt" file generated by VDub that I can post if you need it.

I'm trying it right now with the modified BAT file...

Dum...dee...dum... :)

No error that time. Don't know if that helps though. The junk.wav file it generated is tiny (188 kb) and doesn't appear to contain any actual sound. Do you need anything posted further?

You've surpassed yourself yet again... surely another miracle of software engineering...
I will certainly download 080 tonight and try it out sometime next week...
LoL... Just kidding...

@delacroixp
try with "spresso" filter or the Kiss method (keep it simple/stupid) "Deen().Undot()"

@PlayWithFire
do proprierties of file, is 5.1 ? (and try this update!)

I read In (http://www.amazon.com/Search-Excellence-Lessons-Americas-Companies/dp/0446385077) search (http://www.businessballs.com/tompetersinsearchofexcellence.htm) of (http://www.mckinsey.com/ideas/books/insearchofexcellence.asp) Excellence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Search_of_Excellence) while doing Business Science at varsity... one of their main themes was "kiss" and "if not broke why fix it".

In the quest for perfection rather than simplicity I will definitely give SPresso a go... your version doesn't seam to have any variations ???
Most of your filters have a couple of different flavours...

Same experience for me ... I never saw any message -- finally just closed the command window Vdub was running in. Then it went on OK. Didn't happen again on the second try.

3 things:

1) I have the exact same issue with .80 as I did with .79a (see my post above), I had 2 options in my audio drop down ("English (AC3 2ch, 0xBD 0x81)[0]" and "English AC3 2ch, 0xBD 0x82)[0]"), and I chose the first one. The length by the encoder was still determined to be 10 seconds.

Virtualdub did give me a different error this time though when I tried to open movie.avs:

Avisynth open failure:

Please use the fixed version that has been created
in the same directory as the original d2v file.

2) Secondly, here is a command that gets executed before the encoding:

"C:\Program Files\AutoMKV080\exe\encoder\BAutoDeint.exe" --input "D:\temp\createautodeintmovie.avs" 1>"D:\temp\"deint.log

I think the quotes are in the wrong spot at the very end, I'm guessing it should be:

"C:\Program Files\AutoMKV080\exe\encoder\BAutoDeint.exe" --input "D:\temp\createautodeintmovie.avs" 1>"D:\temp\deint.log"

3) Lastly, this message is duplicated in the log. I noticed this on .79a as well, so this is not a new "feature":

20:40:09 Processing completed. Type is determined to be partly film.

......NOTE: i tryed to add support with ffmpeg to encode in DV and SNOW but without success. There are 2 sample encoding command line: where is the error ?

DV: ffmpeg.exe -i movie.avi -vcodec dvvideo -target dv -b 3000000 -cropleft 2 -croptop 72 -cropright 2 -cropbottom 72 -s 640x352 -r 25.000 -acodec pcm_u16le -ac 2 -ar 48000 test_dv.avi
..............
BHH
Buzz, I did some experimenting with this. If you try just:

ffmpeg -i myVideo.avi -target dv myVideo.dv it will work.
This produces a 720x480 file with yuv411p color.

Then you can try adding in the crops, fps, etc. What I found was:

1. You can only get a 720x480 output (or 720x576 if you use -target pal-dv). Looking at DV specs in wikipedia this makes sense because the formats are:

720x480, 4:1:1 (NTSC)
720x576, 4:2:0 (PAL)

However I found the color was still yuv411p even if I specified pal-dv.

If you use -s to specify any other size it throws an error.

2. Your crops and pads cannot change the image size. In other words the sum of top/bottom crops must equal the sum of top/bottom pads, and the same for left/right crop/pads. It appears crops and pads apply to the output format only, even if you put them before the input file name.

3. you can only get pcm_s16le audio. If you try to specify pcm_u16le it will not encode.

4. Frame rates are only 25 for pal and 29.97 for ntsc and do not need to be specified. If you specify the wrong frame rate it is an error.

5. aspect ratio can be specified but I can't see that it makes any difference in the encoded file.

6. video bitrate (-b) is meaningless and is ignored. The rate is determined by ffmpeg based on the other parameters.

7. I had to use the .dv extension on my output files in order for vlc player or quicktime player to recognize and play them.

8. You don't need the -vcodec option if target = dv.

I thought maybe if you did not specify the target ("dv") ffmpeg might let you set the other parameters to other values but I never found any combination that it would accept.

I couldn't get wmv files to encode to DV. Complained of audio sync errors.

Here is an example of the output from ffmpeg:
Input #0, avi, from 'myVideo.avi':
Duration: 00:01:52.8, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 1162 kb/s
Stream #0.0: Video: mpeg4, yuv420p, 640x480, 29.97 fps(r)
Stream #0.1: Audio: mp3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 128 kb/s
Assuming NTSC for target.
Output #0, dv, to 'test_dv.dv':
Stream #0.0: Video: dvvideo, yuv411p, 720x480, q=2-31, 200 kb/s, 29.97 fps(c)
Stream #0.1: Audio: pcm_s16le, 48000 Hz, stereo, 1536 kb/s
Stream mapping:
Stream #0.0 -> #0.0
Stream #0.1 -> #0.1
Press [q] to stop encoding
frame= 3380 fps= 66 q=0.0 Lsize= 396094kB time=112.8 bitrate=28771.2kbits/s

video:396094kB audio:21150kB global headers:0kB muxing overhead -5.068979%

Hope this helps you. DV files are so huge! When are they needed?

@glynor
thanks for your test!
seems that soundout could have some problem... on some audio source. I think that those audio track have some problem...

about junk.wav... yes is junk.. could you mail me the crash report ? just to point to Sh0dan
thanks again!

@delacroixp
the filter box is editable.. try to edit spresso to your taste!
and if you found an good setting post here! (to share with all) :)

@Shark_jlc
download dgindex 1.4.8 http://www.64k.it/andres/data/d/dgmpgdec148.zip , unzip in dgindex folder , take dgdecode.dll and put also in filter folder
in this way ivtc must be fixed

20:35:37 On selected tracks Dgindex isn't able to demux any audio tracks, now rerunning dgindex in demux all tracks mode
seems problem in demuxing. please do this:
1) manually launch dgindex and create the d2v file AND the audio file
2) launch AutoMKV, on input select the d2v and the audio file
3) set your wmv encoding and let's start encoding!

I think the quotes are in the wrong spot at the very end

it's is a true problem since bdeint will fuction.... i called it a missed feature... don't worry the test is fully operative

@dlflannery
thanks, i will do some more test based on your tests!

Hi,

I'm trying to shrink a movie for a mobile phone.

For this I'd like to set the FPS at 12.5 ; but there seems to be no way to set the fps in automkv ?

Could you please add this option ?

Thanks.

I second this if it is at all possible buzzqw.

I picked up a Meizu M6 (http://en.meizu.com/product_m6.asp) which plays XviD in AVI but only at 20fps & would be great if I could use AutoMKV with it as most of the other conversion software is pretty poor.

It is already possible!

in advanced setting, check "Last line AVS script" and write ChangeFPS(20.000) or ChangeFPS(12.500) :)

DV files are so huge! When are they needed?

DV files are fairly large. The DV-NTSC codec data rate is 3.6MB/s, which results in file sizes for raw DV streams of roughly 12.9GB/hour. Still, this is a far cry from the data rates of other formats used natively by "pro" Non-Linear Editor applications (Avid, FCP, etc). DVCPRO 50 runs 7.2MB/s for example, commonly used 2:1 M-JPEG runs 12MB/s, and uncompressed SD (8-bit) runs 24MB/s.

I, personally, use DV because Final Cut Pro supports editing DV video natively (I don't have to render the files before use when I bring them into a FCP Project), and because it is the native format of just about every SD camcorder there is (and when importing footage from my cameras I can work with the exact same bit-perfect copy of the data that the camera "recorded"). Like I said when I originally mentioned it could be useful... I won't use it TOO much, but since x264 is such a nice quality codec, it would be nice to be able to compress some of my less-quality-sensitive source footage to x264 for long-term storage, and then have AutoMKV "reinflate" the files to DV so that I can use them in FCP. It'd save me tons of storage space for archival and stock footage. :)

When editing, DV has a number of benefits over some other formats that you may be thinking of (such as MPEG-2), mostly speed and quality related. MPEG-2 can be a very high-quality codec, but compressing to it in high qualities takes time and CPU power. DV is much "easier" on the system, and allows it to render a lot more things in real time. When you're editing raw footage together and adding effects and transitions and overlaying multiple different video tracks, performance can certainly be an issue (just try to edit a sequence in MPEG-2 with 15 video streams playing back at once)! In that kind of situation, dropping even 1 frame isn't really acceptable...

@glynor
thanks for your test!
seems that soundout could have some problem... on some audio source. I think that those audio track have some problem...

about junk.wav... yes is junk.. could you mail me the crash report ? just to point to Sh0dan
thanks again!

Thanks for looking into it for me. As I said, since the file encoded successfully I'm really not too concerned, as long as it doesn't happen with a bunch of other encodes. If it happened just this one time... Well then, that's just bad luck I guess!

I'm happy to mail the crash report (and did), but I'm not sure what you mean by "point to Sh0dan" (I think that's the person who developed SoundOut, but I'm not sure what you were getting at)... Can I have a clue?

in dvd mode (main film only), without checking use this pcg and process this ifo is used only for determine the pgc of subtitle extraction

Copied to the wiki, I may make this into its own page.
