If I specify a very high bitrate (Mpeg2 16:9 PAL) will AutoMKV upscale or specify a width greater than 800 or 900 pixels ?
Never.
only using xvid AND if the autoresize will lead to compression test over 120% , then automkv will use high quality matrixes (at different ct automkv will apply different matrixes)
about audio and video.. audio is audio.xxx, video is movie.xxx
nothing impossible...

Hi, I am new to this forum. At first, I would like to say that when I used AutoMKV for the first time I was really impressed. It was version 0.65 or so.
I have been using the program to convert my existing DVD collection into X264/MKV to have the movies ready for my new HTPC. I never cared much about the size, therefore I have always used the constant quality profile with deafault settings. I used to get movies with various size (1.3-2.2 GB) always with the original audio (ac3 or DTS). I do not remember the exact version number, but suddenly the movies started to be extremely large (over 3 GB). I have never played with the X264 settings previously. So I asked GOOGLE and I found that I was supposed to change the quantitizer value. Like I said, previously I always used the default value and if I recall it correctly, it was 18. So I tried using 20 and 22. The result is perfect but I have troubles saving these values for next use. The constant quality dialogue box always comes up with 18 and to use a number different from 18 I always have to manualy change the actual profiles in the x264-profiles directory for the custom value to take effect. Also if I save the defaults and set the copy opriginal option for audio, it always comes up with the lame option.
Does anybody else have the problems? If yes, is it possible to fix these bugs, if they are bugs? I would also like to know whether the x264 encoder was changed so dramatically with the quantitizer value as quite a while ago I was getting movies cca 1.6 GB and now I'm getting cca 2.8 GB with the quantitizer set to 18 in both cases?
Thanx for any replies and best wishes with new releases.

I don't think I've ever used version 0.65 but they're all beta untill we hit the magic 1.0 ...
That said, I take it you are using the latest version (0.91 f) right now.
As to modifying the quantizer (I had the same problem)... you should save your prefered profile (including, let's say, Q20) in the Advanced Settings... eg, Q20.ini and reload as required.
If you save your settings (on the Basic Settings page), the quantizer becomes hardcoded and you have to delete the automkv.ini file completely to reset the works.
As to your issue on the huge swing in filesize between the old-Q18 and the new-Q18... have you used the same resolution ?
Q18 @ 1024x576 is going to be a whole lot bigger than Q18 @ 720x400 or 640x360 ...

I have a strange problem with AutoMKV 0.91b.
When I Queue the processing I get the error message from pgcdemux: "Invalid input file!"
Just tested 0.91f and it seems to have fixed my problem. Yay!
i hope...
I have a similar problem...

I generally work from decrypted ISO images.
I've been encoding the several chapters of "BBC -The Planets" series... one after the other...
I experimented a lot with the first episode and when I had the setup correct, I saved the profile and encoded chp 1...
When it completed I merely selected the 2nd chp and all hell broke loose... eventually reporting "Invalid input file!".
I rebooted, re-selected the 2nd chp, re-loaded my profile the encode ran smoothly...
But when I immediately tried to select the 3rd chp and encode... same problem... I logged off, back on, all well !!!

PS
DGIndex classed the movie as 4:3 (actually 16:9) and only by using MKV could I force the signalling to 832x480 as it should be.

Thanx for the reply. The thing about the profiles is that I select the constant quality profile for x264/mkv, the program comes up with a dialogue box to set the quantizer. I use always only one set of settings (audio - copy original, video - no resize, just crop, no filter, constant quality), saved once in the main window. To be honest I do not know a lot about the advanced encoding settings, I only found out that the optimal value for quantizer is 20-22. The thing is that when I start AutoMKV, it always comes up with the quantizer dialogue box with the quantizer set to 18, which is quite a bit confusing as the program will use 22 (in my case) anyway. But thanx again, as I just saved it in the advanced settings once and it seems to work even though the dialogue box still show 18 whenever I start AutoMKV. Maybe it would be nice to have just one settings file instead of saving 2 (maybe more) different ones, or at least make this more clear. Anyway, I still think it is a very nice piece of software.
To the question whether I used a different resolution with previous versions of the x264 encoder, no I did not. Like I wrote couple of lines before, I always use the same resolution as the source (DVD in 99% of the cases), no resize. I do not remember the version number from when I started using it, but I just downloaded it, unpacked it, started it up, changed it to constant quality x264/mkv, selected the audio and subtitles and let it run. I used to be very happy with the results until I suddenly started getting a lot larger files. After that I found out about the quantizer. This is no big deal, as I can change it, I was just curious about what caused the files to end up larger.

@delacroixp
have you used queue or just selcted the pgc, encoded it, then selected another pgc.. encoded it ?
EDIT: why your source file is a vob and not a ifo ?
@Krayzie

I am very happy to see on ANANDTECH ( http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3153&p=7 ) that AutoMKV is used as BenchMark!!!
:eek::eek::eek: :) :) :)
YES!
(well.. is x264 benchmarked.. but .. have used AutoMKV!)

try encoding with other audio engine (lame, nero ,aac...)
and make sure your audio if playable
(you can also look at audio log someting like movie t01 3_2ch 384kbps delay 0ms_log.txt ...)

is there any possible reason i can not use ogg to encode?
will it help if I reinstall the whole OS ?
by the way, Do I need to install any kind of codec package such as k-lite, cccp, GKnot......etc. before I start to use AutoMkv?

Not sure why, but I am not getting an actual MKV output when trying to process a movie I have ripped. All I have are a bunch of files in a "Temp" folder in the directory that the movie should be created. The files include the ripped VOBs, encoded audio, d2v, BAT files, AVS files, etc. There are no MKV files at all.
I have tried to re-install everything from scratch, but I still get a similar result. Any help would be appreciated.

canlin: I think you may be having the same problem I was having. In this statement:
17:40:01 "F:\g\AutoMKV091\exe\matroska\MP4Box.exe" -add "F:\rip\temp\movie.mp4"ar=1.#INF00 -chap "F:\g\AutoMKV091\exe\chapters.txt" -add "F:\rip\temp\audio.mp3:lang=eng" -fps 29.970 -new "F:\rip\temp\movie_full.mp4"
There appears to be an incorrect character of some sort after the statement "F:\rip\temp\movie.mp4" and before the ar=1. I believe I had the same problem and the char showed up as a #1.
You may want to go back and see if all the files that are made refrence too in this statement exist; movie.mp4, audio.mp3, chapters.txt. If they all exist then it is a problem with this statement or MP4box.exe.
If these files exist you can cut this statement and then run it from a command line and see what error you get.

@jellyfish2002
freeze ?
autoresize gone good.. so movie.avs should not freeze!
can you open movie.avs with virtualdub and check for error ?

To waver4 :
thanks for your reply~!
I tried many ways ......, run it on fresh and clean WinXP with or without any codec pack, with or without the three programs AutoMkV need and mentioned in the first post.
all the same result, stop at 22% of audio encoding. in some test situation even stop earlier without any reason.
I am not a programmer or professional encoder, it is the reason I choose AutoMKV to encode my video files.
so I am barely able to read , even modify, the avs or any files during the encoding process.
AutoMkv works before while I was using the 0.90 or older version with lame and x264 setting. I am very frustrated to run into this problem.
since this problem not be ported by many other users, I guess it is because of I or my PC and OS. I think i have not stop the encoding before I have more free time and COULD figure out how to solve it.
But thanks to buzzqw and waver4 anyway, at least you are willing to help~!

Hi buzz,
2 small questions :
1) Is there an option to keep popping up the help contents when hovering over an option, and perhaps adding a bit more info to the popup-help. Right now, it only opens up for about 2 seconds, way to much to actually read what's get popped up. Also the help file is very limited, especially about the "Advanced Settings" tab
2) Also, perhaps an immediate check to see the manual crop values are correct, directly after the "Start Encoding" button is pressed ? (This spares the user a lot of time, since non MOD/2 MOD/4 MOD/8 MOD/16 values, result in an error and encoding-abort anyway)

@canlin
you have not answer at my questions
are other audio engine (lame/aac/nero..) working on this audio file?
Are other input file working ?
i also asked about delaycut log
@avdw
Right now, it only opens up for about 2 seconds
sorry pal.. it's a limit of OS Microsoft Window
Also the help file is very limited, especially about the "Advanced Settings" tab
if i found any time i will try to expand the help. But remember that advanced settings can be used only if undertud..
Also, perhaps an immediate check to see the manual crop values are correct
what about "check values" button ?

could be several reason for undersize
try analyzing your file with avinaptic, you could have saturated
try using a sharper resize (lanczos)
or use the "automatic" width

When using versions e, f or g I have a problem with selecting files. I have an episodic dvd with 6 episodes and 3 short studio clips (do not copy, bla bla bla).
When I select an IFO file, mkvmagic does some things and then changes my selection to the ifo file of the first episode.
When putting each set of vob's and ifo file into its own subfolder, the correct file gets selected.
When selecting the episodes by using the vob files instead of the ifo files, they are correctly transcoded but none of them has subtitles except the last episode, which has the subs of the first episode.

are you referring to AutoMKV.. not mkvmagic...
the behavior you descrived is correct BUT if you want select a specific ifo you must
1) launch automkv
2) go in advanced settings AND check "process this ifo"
3) select your ifo as usual input
doing so you will see only the pgcs belonging to specified ifo

08:19:16 Top Crop: 55
08:19:16 Right Crop: 5

you cannot crop by odd values, only mod2 (at least)
BHH
Thanks. Got it working....sort of. Still can't find a good group of settings yet for a clean, distortion free, encoding. Trying a different one right now.
One question though, if you need even numbers when cropping, how is it not valid crop settings when Left Crop and Right Crop together are even, and Top Crop and Bottom Crop together are even? Just wondering.
Thanks!
buzzqw

you cannot sum crop value, every single crop must be even
(i hope i have understud your doubt well..)

I try to use lame and x264 to encode now, the audio encoding goes fine and finish the process. now, it is on the video encodng and it may need 48 hours to complete the whole encoding.
I will test the encoded mp4 file and report to you.
With the result, I could say that the few problems I mentioned before is not coused by my OS.
only ogg encoding crash, lame works fine.
It will be great if it could be fixed because encoding via ogg is better than mp3 in my opinion.
buzzqw

i am OGG fan too and it's strange that it crash..
don't know why.. could be interesting decoding the ac3 file to wav and then encoding it to ogg .. just for testing

I'm working on a "NASA Space Trek" ISO (PAL 720x576 4:3).
It has an LCPM audio track which is a first for me since I've never come across a WAV quality audio on a movie DVD.
Anyway, the audio encoding took forever and when the video got going I realised that I had made a mistake and
knew that there would still be a lot of trial and error...
Ripped the video-only with DVD decrypter -> "Invalid input file!".
Ripped the complete PGC -> DGIndex crashes (recreated @ 2:03)
Encoded the video only from the ISO -> no processing but only encodes 1 (of the 3 VOB's).
Ticked "Process this IFO" -> no processing (the first encode did process the VOB's).
The "Check DVD" option is greyed out...
Finally
Encoded video and audio - > success (no processing, VOB encoded directly from ISO).

Again I am having problems with mp4box. All the files are there but when I run mp4box I get back a -1.
What other programs need to be installed for mp4box to run? When I run this statement from my command line it says "The system cannot execute the specified program."

Your'e quite right... I usually decrypt all the 1GB VOB's into a single file and then rename the VOB and IFO to more meaningfull labels...
(I guess it's my programming background at varsity... where "egoless programming" was the in thing...
"Programme so that anybody else can easily read, understand and maintain your programme when you're no longer around to update and maintain..."
Maintaining software costs more than writing it...)
The audio and video usually encode just fine but "subtitle" encodes fail everytime...

I'm trying to convert one of my DVDs to a WMV file with 5.1 audio so I can stream it to my Xbox 360. I read online that selecting "original" in the audio track section would preserve the 5.1 audio, but the file I converted has no audio. I hear nothing on my PC or Xbox 360. I've attached my log. Thanks for any help you can give.

I am very happy to see on ANANDTECH ( http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3153&p=7 ) that AutoMKV is used as BenchMark!!!
:eek::eek::eek: :) :) :)
YES!
(well.. is x264 benchmarked.. but .. have used AutoMKV!)
BHH
Just wanted to say I hadn't heard of AutoMKV, and after I read that, I came here to try it out. I've been using AutoGK for awhile now (various others before that), but was looking for some H.264 support. So far, I really like the app.
I'm tinkering with some autocrop/aspect issues, but I just grabbed 0.92, so we'll go again. I don't quite know enough to articulate my problem yet, but for now it just looks like it's not auto cropping. I'll holler later if I can't figure it out. (actually, I just looked at movie.avs and it looks like it's in there now, as it wasn't before, so I'm probably fine, thanks!)
Thanks for the program!

This encodes from the ISO and while it does process the PGC... DGIndex immediately exits...
I did notice that an extra 'temp' folder was added to my destination path... after deleting this on the next run all went well...
I'm curious to know what causes AutoMKV to process the movie...
AutoMKV encoded directly from the ISO with a few documentaries last night...
Also, I didn't tick "Process this IFO"...
Sometimes it does, othertimes not ?

I ripped the movie in IFO mode to the HDD and while AutoMKV does process the file... it only processed 535 MB out of the 5.47 GB...
I found it odd that it didn't even process 1 complete 1GB VOB...
The movie is "The Great Escape (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Escape)" and is interesting not only because it's released on wide-angle 4:3 PAL @ 766x320 DAR
but also, the audio is MONO.
Anyway, it was quite fortuitous since I managed to test a few different Quantiser/Resolution settings to zone in on
50% filesize without encoding the entire movie.
It's all good !

I used GordianKnot and AutoGK with much success, and considering MeGUI was written by the same, I had high hopes. Unfortunately, I could never get the hang of it. AutoMKV at 0.92 worked perfectly for me (cropped and AR'd like it should), so it's definitely going on the reccomended list.
I tried getting a friend to use AutoGK, but something's screwed up on his computer, and it doesn't work at all. AutoMKV, using just a directory and not any real installation or VFW codecs means it's simpler and should run easier. I shall evangelize and spread the word!

First of all Welcome to the Forum!
but for now it just looks like it's not auto cropping
autocrop is "triggered" if you select the width in main panel AND don't use the manual crop/resize in advanced settings
you can also look at movie.avs ans search for a "autocrop"...
you can read more on AutoMKV Wiki :)
@delacroixp
it's strange that even if pgc 2 is 2h and more when extracting it will be reduced to 15 minutes...
you have 3 solutions
1) mount the iso in a virtualdrive and let automkv with dvddecrypter extract it
2) rip in one big vob and select as input the vob AND not the ifo
3) do yourself the d2v
can you mail me the ifo ?
thanks!

Hi Buzzqw.
I'm try to convert a double dvd in an mkv in x264.
First dvd was converted fine. Probably it's flagged as film. Final result is amazing . a dvd9 in a 2.5GB mkv 720x416 with ac3 multichannel. It work fine with my zoomplayer with a haali splitter+coreavc+ac3filter filtergraph.
With second dvd I'm in trouble... :D I attach the log file.
the result is not deinterlaced correctly for most of chapter.

probably the chapters are both interlaced. progressive and telecined
