Have you any thoughts on Psychovisual Enhancement ?

I don't know whether you ever used the EKG in Dr DivX 1 but basically the idea was to decrease the bitrate in areas the eyes wouldn't notice anyway.

How do you think this impacts on Constant Quality encodes since all is equal ?

I was just wondering whether it is not in fact better to vary the Quantiser (as is happening) for a better overall Psychovisually pleasing result.

What's your take ?

I never liked it. The 5 to 10% it would save on a filesize was not worth it. I mean how do they know what is important to me? Maybe I do want to look at the redhead in the corner of the picture. Ever watch the movie 6th sense? When you watch it the second time you realize that all the hints of what is going on were red objects. It is unlikely that a computer could figure that out.

Where this is important is whey you are trying to bet the best picture possible over the smallest pipe. There is one RF-TV distribution system that uses DivX and it limits the bandwidth to 1000kbs. They use PE to squeeze out every bit.

Where’s the volume control ?

First, I really like this program. It does a good job, and I love the fact that it works in the background. Now my question: I want to increase the volume of the movies that I’m encoding.

The checkbox for “normalize” doesn’t do enough for my purposes, and I can’t find any other volume settings. Sorry to be dense about this, I realize that since mp3gain.exe, etc. are there that it must be possible, but I don’t see “gain” or “volume” in the Advanced Audio Options. I don’t see anything in the Advanced Settings. The Advanced Profiles Editing seems to be all about the video. I don’t know where else to look or what files to open up.

I’m a newbie, and I barely understand half of this thread, but I’d really appreciate a leg up here. I’ve used other programs to raise the volume, and I’d like to do it with AutoMKV. Perhaps the answer is obvious; I will slap my head and be humbled, but right now I’m lost. Please point me in the right direction.

In the Wiki it shows VBR as one of the pull-downs for Lame. I only seem to have ABR and CBR -- even when I put it on max quality. Why?

Which container are you using for your encodes (PC and/or DVD-standalone, etc...) and why encode into MP3 when AAC MP4 is eminently superior...

BeSweet offers very nice AAC 5.1 or stereo (VBR/CBR) encoding facilities... if you are willing to get your hands dirty...

Well I spoke a little early, I am having the same problem that I remember having on XP, however I dont remember how to fix it. I spent a long time reading back through the previous pages and couldnt find the solution. What happens is it goes through all the steps just fine, and on let's encode, it just goes straight to saving log. And what it spits out is a really small (like 40k) wmv file. I am trying to encode a 1.5 gb vob file.

The fix, if i remember correctly had to do with copying some .dll s into the exe folder, I think maybe the GDindex one, but not sure....Any ideas? Thanks, you are an amazing guy!

I had reported earlier a (very) low volume problem when encoding form AC3 6ch to Nero AAC 2ch...

It seems that the quality or bitrate mode in audio settings has no difference on the result...used both ways and ended up with low volume...

With the AC3 2ch audio to AAC 2ch, the volume is as it should be, so the problem can be attributed to the downmixing process...

The problem was not fixed by the previous or last (most recent) release...
The encodings were made with the 0.79a release...

Really, where?

I don't remember the name of the system, but it is used in this upscale apartment complex in our city. They do this to encourage to dwellers to buy the broad-band bundle from the apartment complex rather than the local telco.

So I was told it was a wi-max type system from motorola with a Ethernet-Divx-Video converter box that is limited to 1Mbit/sec. I want to say the box is from Pace, but I am not sure about that.

I've also noticed that when ripping with DVD Decrypter it lists the series as a 720x576 (PAL) 16:9 movie which is clearly illogical...

now when selecting "Original" as WIDTH the RESIZER goes to NONE
The problem is that I can manually set the full resolution of 1024x576 by choosing '...' but I can't set the Resize Filter to NONE... only Original or 'AutoCrop Only' will allow No Resize Filter.

Remember that the maximum width of DVD-video is 720px. Therefore, it is impossible to encode at 1024xanything and not have resizing. If you don't resize, where is the encoder going to get the extra pixels from?

I have a question you can probably answer: Is it possible to encode using Constant Quality-CRF and have the encoder set the quality setting? Like if I set a container size, have the encoder check to see how complex the movie is and then set the quality level to suit the final size? Or am I just describing how regular encoding works now. :D

Can't I make use the iPod 5.5G and not set a filesize? Everytime I select Don't Care about Filesize it automatically sets me back to ConstantQuality-CRF.

The reason that I am asking is that the ipod 5.5G profile is the profile that should be used to work with the new Apple-TV, but for the apple TV I don't care about filesize because the files will stay resident on my computer. But if I use the Constant Quality-CRF profile the results will not play on the Apple-TV.

OK... all done !!! ... aswell as Anamorphic Widescreen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anamorphic_widescreen) from Wikipedia where they mention
"It should be noted that the picture is not vertically manipulated in any way—the normal anamorphic process instead uses a horizontally-oriented element to squeeze the width only.".

So it's a bit like using old 'square' film completely and then horizontally stretching it into 2.39:1 or 16:9... rather than using only half the film area...

Aspect Ratios (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/aspectratios.htm) on Doom9 Guides goes on to say that "When you encode for a PC based format (like DivX) you'll have to first unqueeze the picture and then resize that to your desired resolution (this would correspond to a stream having a 1:1 DAR)." ... since DivX only supports square pixels... and hence the 1024x576...

So far so good...
So I take it AutoMKV will alow me to encode the movie at the Full Resolution of 720x576 and then stretch it out to 1024x576 on playback... is that where the 'Aspect Ratios and Muxing' option comes in... ???

Can I still ask questions... or do I have to read some more... ???

Kind of an out of context question, but while I always use the "highquality-slow" profile for H264 encoding, I see great variations in the speed of encoding, ranging from 6fps to 24fps...
How does that measure with you?

That is with movies encoded at 720x* resolution and not that different in the scene-change speed etc, not a big fan of action movies in general...

(on a Amd64 X2 3800+ NF4 939, 1Gb ddr400 /dual channer computer)
Now running at 7.21fps with 5:25 hours to go for the first pass (wish I could give it a nudge)

Aspect Ratios and Muxing

go to advanced settings and set force muxing ar to 2.35 (only avaiable for mkv or mp4 container)

@weaver4
interesting question...

in x264 you can encode in
1 pass at fixed bitrate
2 pass
1 pass CRF
1 pass QP

so... you want unlimited size, it's is ok... but what profile ?

you can set disk settings to 10000 (yes 10gb) and automkv will compute bitrate (for 1 pass/2 pass)

or in advanced setting set the bitrate (1pass/2pass profile again)

make your choice

@vgiozo
keep me informed (about audio)

highquality-slow
seriusly, try the main profile and look at difference with slow... and take also note of speed...
for me the slow/er profile is to use only to squiz the last bit

@wizboy11
sharp matrix is to be used with high bitrate encoding, when no frames must be "bad".
Using a sharp/low matrix when bitrate isn't adeguate (to low/to high) will cause only more artifact

Has anyone encoded from Sony Superbit DVD's (http://www.sonypictures.com/cthe/superbit/what_is_superbit.html) ???

Apparently (http://www.hifi-writer.com/he/superbit/superbit.htm) they use the same resolution (Dimensions) of regular DVD's but boost the bitrate by sometimes 100%... which gives a better quality movie... something like encoding movies @ Q18 rather than Q22...

Also, audio is improved with the (probably) better DTS sound format.

It should encode beautifully with H264... especially for those guys/girls who can't get hold of HD and 1080HD material.

Works beautifully though I will only C the results in 5 hours... 6 fps with 105,000 frames to go is a bit rough... (perhaps I should experiment with 1 chapter ??).

What is the best Filter to use for "Original" (In my case BoB, a war drama/documentary)... I'm trying MipSmooth(preset=MovieHQ2).
Perhaps AutoMKV could default to a recommended Filter for the "Original" setting.

I noticed "AutoCrop Only" insists on using a Resize Filter... I guess it's impossible to crop in such a way that AR is maintained and Risizing is un-necessary without killing the movie...
A 4:3 movie with black space (Top=2 and Bottom=2) would then be cropped (Left=4 Right=4 Top=2 and Bottom=4)... a bit cumbersome I suppose.
Would (can) H264 still support "Original" with, let's say, 2 lines cropped... without resizing and playing back with the correct AR ???

I discoverd an interesting article on CRF vs QP (http://handbrake.m0k.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1607) quantizer encoding.

Posted by jbrjake on Handbrake Forum (Fri, Feb 16 2007)

When you use a constant QP (the default), you compress every frame the same amount, regardless of the content.

When you use a constant rate factor, it varies the QP slightly. When a scene has a lot of action and motion, it will raise the QP (compressing more). This is because your eye will be distracted by everything going on, and won't have time to see the heavier compression. When a frame doesn't have a lot of motion, it will lower the QP, compressing it less. This is because your eye will have more time to look at the image, so you want it to be as much like the source as possible.

If you were a computer, you would look at a CRF encoding and say it was lower quality than the CQP copy. And it would be. But if you're a human being, subjectively, the CRF copy will look better. It least compresses the parts you see the most, and most compresses the parts you see the least.

I hope that's clear. I plan to have a Wiki page about CRF eventually, but I haven't had a chance to put one together yet.

Personally, I always use CRF for single-pass encodes and can think of no reason to ever use CQP.

What do you think ???

The Thread went further on to say that
Posted by jbrjake on Handbrake Forum (Sat Feb 17, 2007 6:50 pm)

If you seriously desire high quality output and you're patient, you can do a 1-pass CRF encode with a high quality level (65-75%), figure out what the bitrate is on it, and then do a 2-pass encode with that as the average bitrate.

See, when you do a CRF or CQP encode, you have no control over the output's size/bitrate. All you control is how heavily compressed each frame is. Once you know the bitrate you need to reach a certain quality level (compression rate factor), a 2-pass in ABR mode set to that bitrate will pack in even more quality.

How wierd is that... I always thought (certainly with QP) that 1-pass CQ gives the best quality for that filesize (all else being equal)... but now a 2-pass can actually increase the quality even further... !!!

Is this for real or what ?

I was talking about the iPod profiles, it does not make sense to me that they are tied to filesize. These devices have a hard drive and the new Apple-TV has a harddrive. They should be like the ConstantQuality-CRF profile where you set the quality and tell it to encode. But if you use the ConstantQuality-CRF profile as it is the content will not play on the ipod or apple tv.

If you set the filesize to 10G and just let the coder figure it out you have no control over filesize/quality.

you can copy the audio source, and so it's true the audio bitrate slider isn't needed, but you can encode the audio track to XXX and so the bitrate is needed again... (but maybe i don't understud well...)

@weaver4

the ipod profile's are 2 pass profile and so it is NOT possible to encode PER QUALITY

or you do a 2 pass encode or you do a 1 pass quality/bitrate encoding

more: the ipod profile aren't compatible with ipod... because of picky player inside... the mp4mux doesn't support the type of muxing needed by this player (ipod)
for compatibility you need to use nicmp4box, for muxing

However... the AR was still 4:3 (instead of 16:9)... so I tried a short chapter... also 4:3 and the logs dissapeared.
Finally I did another chp and also ticked the Anamorphic Encoding under "Muxing Options" aswell as the 2.35 Force Muxing AR.

The AR is still 4:3 though I can happily play the clip in Zoom Player by setting the 16:9 Aspect Ratio with perfect results... Media Player Classic and WMPlayer are unable to playback in 16:9...

from dos box run "aacgain.exe audio.mp4" (without quotes)
what is the message ?

and post your mkvmaudio.avs

thanks ! :)

Ok, the newly encoded movie in which downmixing from 6 to 2ch was applied, presented equally low volume...

I did what you said above and this is what followed (jpg image)

I finally encoded the entire Band of Brothers series @ Q23 (640x360) onto 1 DVD with 1 MB to spare... and this from a series that is originally 34 GB and 12 hours long...

This is truly a testament, not only to the power of H264, the simplicity and versatility of AutoMKV, and the sheer genius of Buzzqw... but also the absolute potential of the Constant Quality CRF profile...

See pic pending

open the movie.d2v with a text editor, search fro Aspect_Ratio= xxx

what is written ?

@vgiozo
got the error !! is due to SPACE in your installation folder
you have installed automkv in "C:\Program Files\AutoMKV079a" but the space between program AND files do not permit aacgain to work
First of all thanks for this bug !
Second, fixed in next release
Third, movie automkv079a folder to c:\apps\automkv079a or something similar
Fourth: ok, now that you have normalized the audio click on muxing.bat for re-mux

thanks again!

more: the ipod profile aren't compatible with ipod... because of picky player inside... the mp4mux doesn't support the type of muxing needed by this player (ipod)
for compatibility you need to use nicmp4box, for muxing

Well if I can't use AutoMKV for the iPod I won't buy an iPod. If the iPod profile does not work for the iPod does the Zune profile work for the Zune?

You can download VirtualDub here (http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/) ... look for v1.6.17 (stable)

VD is one of the oldest video encoder/manipulator come jack of all trades apps ... written by a varsity student... how kewl is that.

You can find movie.avs in your 'temp' Encoding Output folder... check it out....

Enjoy !!!

this value is not normal Crop(0,4,720,568)
for a 16:9 film the crop should more , a lot more
i think that this film is 4/3, and then squeezed to 16/9
i can suggest to ask help on general forum

@RipcordAFF
virtualdub: www.virtualdub.org

the movie.avs is in temp folder created by encoding

try this open mediaplayer classic and load the movie.avs, if it is ok you will see your movie and (if wmv encoding) hear audio, if not ok you will see a huge red line. Take note of this error (if present)

moreover the next full update will got the new wmcmd.vbs, that is more stable

Band of Brothers was meant to be a TV series... the most expensive ever @ $125 million so that may have something to do with the 4:3...

Hey Buzz, I tried to open movie.avs w\ virtual dub, here is the error:

"Avisynth open failure:Loadplugin: unable to load "C:\users\reed\desktop\utilities\dvd stuff\automkv\exe\filter\removegrain.dll"

And ideas? Thanks man

Shark_jlc

@Shark_jlc
you can copy the audio source, and so it's true the audio bitrate slider isn't needed, but you can encode the audio track to XXX and so the bitrate is needed again... (but maybe i don't understud well...)
...

BHH

Let me try again. I set the audio bitrate slider to 128 kbps and save my settings. However, last night I opened AutoMKV, browsed to an IFO, and when the file was loaded by AutoMKV the audio slider changed to 64 Kbps.

So, I was wondering why the slider changed, is 64 the audio bitrate of the ifo/vob file that loaded? Or is it a bug?

Thanks buzzqw.

The problem has not been fixed...I still get low volume, even though I changed the program path of AutoMKV, so that it does not contain any spaces...(c:\Apps)

What else could be at fault here?
