Sometimes, calling a project dead can motivate some developers to take over, or create their own project.
For MPC-HC, as long as it works, it's hard for a dev to find motivation to enter the project. And there's still MPC-BE.

The UHD file definitely looks like HDR. You can use madVR to play it properly (if it was encoded properly).
Indeed that corrects the "washed out look" :thanks:
Though using madVR brings nice colours, it "breaks" my HW-acceleration (via secondary GPU) as the MPC rendering device can not be manually enforced anymore.
Does anyone know how feasible a shader plugin (BT.2100 to BT.709) might be?

if your secondary GPU has a connected GPU you can use DXVA copyback else you need anew nightyl build form lavfilter with d3d11 which will work as long as the GPU is in the system.

Well huhn, I could make a few video players to use the video acceleration of my secondary gpu (HDR in HEVC or VP9) but the majority just fails (they go for the primary gpu).
Working are Kodi in full screen mode or Microsoft's ZuneVideo app.
But they all require the video to be rendered on the secondary monitor - as soon as you drag it onto the primary monitor the video gets reinitialised and the hw acceleration brakes.
MPC handles this greatly either by starting the video on the secondary screen or forcing this option ("Select D3D9 Render Device"):

What's the point of this logo right in the middle of the image?

I guess it's his desktop background or a trailer being played, and he just cropped a rectangle around both windows on top of it.

and do the majority of video player use madVR and are unable to use lavfilter?

You nailed it LigH , it is just a logo from a HEVC video sample (should be 12bit, so far decodes as 10bit only).

What's the point of this logo right in the middle of the image?
The bloody point is to illustrate the whole fuzz I was talking about ;), namely playing HDR material the most efficient way (forcing HW acceleration via MPC's rendering device list) and getting the best looking results (using madVR's superb colour treatment and its FreeSync "compatible" fullscreen playback).

Read again what huhn wrote (use LAVFilters nightly with D3D11VA-CB).

Hey aufkrawall you are right the solution chain MPC-extLAV-madVR is most promising:

+ superb colours
+ HW-acceleration
+ secondary screen no longer needed (can be offline)
- cpu load is doubled (still low though)
- some audio stuttering

i remember audio stutter with my 6770 when used up all the Vram.
try to lower the queues in madVR may help.

Just spent an hour or so trying to fathom why an MP4 was displaying in my trusty MPC-HC in distorted fashion instead of the expected 16:9. It's been the app associated with almost all my video file extensions for ages. Instead of looking at the fine detail of how I'd created the file, it took me a while to do the obvious of trying it in other players. All displayed correctly.
My illustration hopefully states my question:

I wonder if both the video stream and the MP4 container have aspect ratio flags here, and MPC-HC prefers the wrong one. Would a full MediaInfo log (CLI: -f; GUI: Debug - Advanced mode) reveal this?
sneaker_ger

I have no problems with MP4 aspect ratios. Upload your sample file if you want it fixed. And tell us which "other players".
About container/stream AR: LAV Video has a setting for which one to prefer. (black check mark/grey check mark/no check mark, default is grey check mark)
During playback go "Play"->"Filters"->"LAV Video [...]" and try other setting, then restart player:

Most likely cause is a mismatch of stream and container info, if that is the case it can't really be "fixed" in the software, only in your file.
LigH
12th December 2017, 12:39
I believe MPC-HC uses its own local copy of LAV Filters via native API, it's quite probable that they have their own configuration, compared to other system-installed splitter/decoder filters.
sneaker_ger
12th December 2017, 13:40
Yes. That's why I always tell people to go via Play->Filters->LAV Video [...]. Then you get the one that your player is actually using.

You can try out VLC v3.x, although it's not a directshow player either (needs java jre installed).

Is there a way to start paused first and resume playback after x seconds?
I use mpc-hc with my HTPC, and it takes a while for my TV & AVR to adjust to the incoming audio/video resolution. Currently video playback starts immediately, so I miss few couple of seconds of the video. I would like to have the video load (so my screen adjusts to the refresh rate), but not start until after x seconds has passed.
huhn

the refreshrate changer under fullscreen has a delay option that should do it but i never tried it.

alternatively you can set "Playback" -> "Playback" -> "Play" to "0 times", that way your videos always start paused and you can start playback yourself.

What's the difference between Alt+Enter and F11? What is "fullscreen w/o res. change." exactly? Can't find any proper info around.

i think it's time to say: know any exact alternative to mpc-hc?

27th December 2017, 14:46
It's mpc-be that is almost a clone. But I use potplayer. The only problem I have is the lack of dvb MPEG4 support so I can't use my tv tuner.
I don't know why but I think that MPC-BE is missing something. Maybe it's my weird mind that caused that.

I will be making a fresh build with latest LAV, MediaInfo, etc soon. Probably next week. I might make it an (unofficial) version 1.8 release.

Potplayer was cloned from MPC-HC, you'll notice the similarities in the options.

Maybe it's worth to wait for the new stable lavfilters release, it should arrive very soon. And I agree with the major version number bump.
Thanks for your work, clsid!

You have push rights to mpc-hc's repo so i guess there's no need to unofficial one.

Already asked for (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=171537); won't come (https://trac.mpc-hc.org/ticket/5532) (because a Windows-only player can more efficiently use Windows-only API's, or so...).

VLC needs opengl it has to work on linux too.
but what does openGL gives you that directx can't give you?

High quality video output
mpv has an OpenGL based video output that is capable of many features loved by videophiles, such as video scaling with popular high quality algorithms, color management, frame timing, interpolation, HDR, and more.

nevcairiel
4th January 2018, 19:06
You should look into madVR. Also, "OpenGL" by itself supports nothing of that, its just the underlying technology. You could build the exact same features in DirectX if someone wanted to do that. If you want to use mpv, you should use mpv. But just using "OpenGL" doesn't give any of those features "magically".

Most people are unaware of the existence of many features that are already available in MPC-HC. Go discover those and just act if they are 'new'.
Many people use VLC because of its reputation that "it plays everything". But in reality it is usually several months behind with regards to new formats. MPC-HC supported HEVC and VP9 about half a year earlier (thanks to LAV Filters).

It's all about Microsoft and its abominable reputation (based on true and ugly facts).
People are rising up and don't want to be abused by these assholes anymore.
