MPC-HC integrates LAV Filters directly and no extra installation steps are required. The embedded version of LAV Filters doesn't interact at all with other installed DirectShow filters (including standalone versions of LAV Filters).

the internal filters page seems pretty confusing atm with the nightlies with lav filters.
are there plans to simplify it?
perhaps just 3 buttons - video, audio, and container
and from there you can configure lav filters further

I agree. Some formats supportted by LAV aren't in the configuration lists, the "Internal filters" page need to be redesigned after integrating LAV.

Because XP works well and works reliably. And is more functional. Microsoft got that one right. Last I heard (as of about a month ago), a little over 37% of all personal computers are still running XP. 7 is at 45%, Vista and 8 are each at about 4.5% each, and OS X, linux and unix make up the rest. XP won't die until MS kills it by putting out something superior, which I don't see happening any time soon. I don't think XP's EOL next year will kill it. I know a half dozen people still running Windows 98.
Even though I can boot into 7 or XP, my entire ripping/encoding toolchain is still on XP. Viewing is on either.
If Win 7 is so great, why is XP mode an upgrade? :D
And it doesn't help that I've been using XP for all 13 of those years. :)
Edit: Late breaking news: 8 just passed Vista and is now at 5.1% Wow!!

Why? LAV, while good, not the only filters out there. Someone may use something else and still prefer to keep things simple.
But taking this step further, personally I'd like to see MPC-HC build where decoders, splitters, AudioSwitcher, anything under "settings-playback" category (includes evr-cp and everything related), web interface and possibly something else removed completely. So it will be a GUI where LAV and madvr are hardcoded (but not bundled) :D
Well, if you're looking for something bare-bones give https://github.com/mpv-player a try.

Keep in mind that those statistics include china, 3rd world countries and regular office usage where adoption to new technologies is at least a few years behind. It does not represent regular home users who has already adopted 7 as their main OS. There's no reason to use xp over 7 if your hardware can handle it. If not then you might as well look for some lightweight linux distro. XP is a horrible OS by design.
While xp supports is not going anywhere yet, judging by its playback capabilites it's already unsuitable for enthusiasts.

There are LOTS of things that Windows (apps) can do but Linux (apps) can't, regardless of the chosen distro. And except for the post-Win2K "visual styles" thing (Luna, Royale, Zune, and similar custom stuff), XP is an usable OS by design, at least for us, the so-called "advanced users" :sly: whereas Vista, Seven and 8 are "exceedingly gay" :D by design ;)
Surely there are many things that XP cannot do when compared to Vista / Seven / 8 , but if the XP user doesn't use/want/need those new features, why bother?

I'm sorry about the removal of the standard filters. :(
Nevertheless, thanks for MPCDXVAVideoDec.ax. I know, in this mini-filter not contain FFMpeg codes.
Therefore, 10-bit X264 videos can't play. For playing need to use last MPCVideoDec.ax (1.6.9.7503) or
Media Player Classic - BE filters.
Anyway, thanks all developers for updates and efforts!

The modified filter intentionally only supports DXVA, as DXVA1 is the only functionality missing from current MPC-HC. You don't need the software decoders from MPCVideoDec. MPC-HC uses LAV Filters now and those support 10-bit H.264 perfectly. Actually, better than MPCVideoDec ever did.

I'm sure you will start complaining when stuff stops working next year when XP EOL's, and everyone turns off the XP compat hacks that have accumulated over the years.
Please respect Rule 3 (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm). People will have reasons. And may it just be the small purse (new hardware and software may be expensive for unemployed or underpaid people).
In these times of acquisitiveness crises and unregulated interception, the value of a media player free of charge and free of advertizing may be priceless; but if you can spare a little, don't hesitate.

I was thinking of adding a path to the options window. as of now I don't think the code from above works properly (or I'm missing something).
If I delete the lavfilters folder inside the MPC-HC the external ones are used, however the internal filters page in the options window is empty.

Now that LAV filters are being used as the internal filters, has there been any discussion of packing everything into one executable (how it was done before the switch) instead of having external dependencies (LAVFilters folder in the same location as the program)?

More specifically, it would seem that subtitle a duplicate UTF-8 BOM written to the beginning of the file, which causes the second BOM to end up in the body of the text.

This is one of the prices we have to pay for integrating LAVFilters. It makes things a lot easier for us, so that's a small price to pay really.

A single executable does not have any real benefits. Current builds are just as portable as the old ones. In fact, current method will use less space for those who use multiple copies of the exe.
On a related note, is it still planned to move the shaders outside of the exe as well?

If that's the case it'd be beneficial to rename the files to differentiate between 32- and 64-bit filters. Currently it's not possible to have both 32- and 64-bit MPC-HC in the same folder as the LAV Filters files will be overwritten.

I read very often of people using madVR, LAV filters and other "things" (sorry, don't know the correct term :p) but personally I'm fine with default MPC-HC/BE.
Now that MPC-HC uses LAV filters, how does it affect me? Better IQ?
I usually disable DXVA because it makes seeking slower (by the way, is this normal?) and also because I don't need it having a powerful enough PC, anyway I can't find the option to disable the various DXVAs, where are they now?
I'm not sure if this was a recent change or not but I noticed that the option "Sub pictures to buffer" has been increased to 10, I believe it was 3 before. I watch videos (mostly anime) with soft subtitles, so should I leave it at 10? Since it says "buffer" it makes me think that the higher the number the better (if the hardware can handle it of course), am I wrong? I also leave everything at default except unticking "Round up to power of two"; I don't know what this option does but I've seen it suggested various times in the usual "guide for best quality".
Lastly, are there plans for the GUI?
Any help is appreciated. :)

LAV Filters are the best filters out there. They support various HW accelerations. They are way more stable than old filters. Old filters have had many problems which are now resolved. New filters are faster also.
About madVR, it gives you the highest video quality possible with many color calibration features and great upscaler. Basically build-in EVR-CP is just fine for playback, but if you want better quality you should look at madVR. MadVR offers few very interesting options like smooth motion FRC which allow you to completely get rid of judder when viewing for example 24fps movie on 60Hz display.
I usually disable DXVA because it makes seeking slower (by the way, is this normal?) and also because I don't need it having a powerful enough PC, anyway I can't find the option to disable the various DXVAs, where are they now?
To open video decoder setting just double click bold format name in "internal filters" options page. Or by play->filters menu while in playback.
And yes if you have PC that can handle software playback fine it's recommended to disable HW acceleration. Software decoding is more stable. Slower seeking or other problems that you can experiences with DXVA decoding are normal and depend on your HW and drivers. HW accel is basically for PCs where CPU can't handle software decoding.

You should leave subtitle buffer at default value. Higher buffer works better with some subtitles and therefore was changed to 10 some time ago.
Hover on "Round up to power of two" with mouse and you will see tooltip explaining this option.
Lastly, are there plans for the GUI?

Hardware decoding depends entirely on how good the card is at doing this. Newer cards are really quite good at doing the decoding, probably no reason not to use it unless you have issues. I believe video cards have dedicated hardware for this, whereas by CPU it's entirely software? The video card hardware method is more efficient power wise I believe.
