statusbar still doesn't indicate D3D11 as H/W Decoding. at least I test it with LAVFilters as external filters
Will be fixed in today's nightly. And I made sure it won't fail again if new decoders are added.
There are no new nightly builds at the moment, maybe the build system was broken?
Yes it failed because of this issue with MSBuild https://github.com/Microsoft/msbuild/issues/2424 . And there were other issues needed to be fixed so the nightly were frozen. Will be build normally today.
MPC-HC : actually I originally was on a older version (1.7.11 or 1.7.12). I updated to 1.7.13 before posting here, hoping it would fix the problem. It didn't.
GPU drivers : same. I had drivers dating from before GeForce Experience 3.0 (didn't want to have to create an account etc). This problem made me willing to try installing the latest GF Experience + drivers. No change, unfortunately.
If that helps in any way, I've noticed with Process Explorer that whenever I try to open an x264 file, I can see a second mpc-hc64.exe item suddenly appearing in the process list, which is marked "Suspended" and stays idle. Then after 5-10 seconds delay, it disappears from the process list, at the exact same time the video is finally playing, see http://i.imgur.com/qKDFwy3.png
Can you please try latest development version http://nightly.mpc-hc.org/ (should be available in an hour, or you can try previous one from old directory). There were reports (https://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1814190&postcount=3192) that it is fixed. Probably by using new non-xp toolchain. Still it is Windows bug, but if it persist on latest nightly we will try to resolve/workaround it.

I will try that tomorrow (going to bed now), thanks a lot. But if it's related to MPC-HC startup time and Windows Insider, I doubt it will be fixed for me, as :
- I'm NOT on Windows Insider
- The issue I'm encountering is NOT a startup / app launch issue : MPC-HC itself launches immediately as always. It's a "on file open" issue, with x264 files.

Yeah, I tried that... "Hardware decoder to use" => tried putting it to "None", but didn't change anything unfortunately.

Duh, I hadn't even tried that, sorry. I had CoreAVC Video renderer selected as an external filter. Worked like a charm for like six years or so. Deactivating it now... problem solved.
I wonder what might have caused this problem though. Anyway, in 2017, CoreAVC might be useless now, isn't it ? Looks like it's dead anyway. Is there any reason to use an external AVC decoder anymore or can I just uninstall it and forget about it ?
Thanks !

Today's nightly will feature new rewritten drawing code. Improved SSE2 and brand new AVX2 version if available by CPU. Also few other related improvements to SSA/ASS subtitles.
There is still much to improve there. But I'd like to prioritize changes based on real life samples, so if you have some samples that MPC-HC struggle with please share it.

DXVA doesn't play this sample. Probably Microsoft's decoder initialize DXVA and fallback when it fails. That's why we detect it as being active for a while. But I haven't look in detail what's going on in the code. But I doubt we can change anything here.

@devs,
not sure if you're interested in this, but the latest LAV + madVR builds now support native D3D11 DXVA decoding, by using a new custom interface. IMHO going forward, this is going to be the best solution for hardware decoding. It performs slightly faster than DXVA2, has identical image quality to software decoding (unlike DXVA2), and due to the simplified custom interface might hopefully also be more stable/reliable than native DXVA2 decoding. Current disadvantages of D3D11 DXVA decoding are that it won't ever work on anything older than Windows 8.1, and that the current madVR version doesn't support DXVA deinterlacing + scaling yet (will be added in a future version), when using native D3D11 DXVA decoding.
If you're interested in adding support for this to your renderers, you can see the new custom interface here:
https://github.com/Nevcairiel/LAVFilters/blob/master/decoder/LAVVideo/decoders/d3d11/ID3DVideoMemoryConfiguration.h
To be honest, I'm not sure how difficult it would be to add support for this to EVR, and whether you find it worth the effort. Just wanted to let you know.

LigH
19th August 2017, 21:56
After youtube-dl downloaded the video, you will be able to play the locally downloaded file... implementing stream selection code from youtube-dl into MPC-HC won't be simple, though, at least due to completely different programming languages being used. Furthermore, it's not "streaming" in a narrow sense anyway.

There's a ticket (https://trac.mpc-hc.org/ticket/5879)regarding youtube-dl integration but no one wanted to work on it so far.
However you can use "piping" to stream.

That gibberish occurs with the above command lines:
https://abload.de/thumb/ytdluas1c.png (http://abload.de/image.php?img=ytdluas1c.png)
When I add
--format="((bestvideo[vcodec^=vp9]/bestvideo)+(bestaudio[acodec=opus]/bestaudio[acodec=vorbis]/bestaudio[acodec=aac]/bestaudio))/best"
to youtube-dl.conf (stream selection config for open codec and best quality), it instead downdloads the whole video.
What am I doing wrong? :o

If the downloaded video is written to the console, instead of piped to the player, then this version of youtube-dl seems not to support "-" as alias to STDOUT piping. But this topic is about MPC-HC, so rather ask youtube-dl issues where its developers can reply.

Got youtube-dl working. :)
Looks like some weird behavior of Windows: It doesn't work with the "run" function, but it does work when executing the command via a bat file.
Do you guys know how to stop it from downloading both streams first when you use "-f bestvideo+bestaudio"?
Without that command, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aqz-KE-bpKQ works just fine with the commands used for piping. However, it's just 1080p H.264 instead of 4k 60fps VP9.
I know that it's because bestvideo+bestaudio are two seperate streams, but in theory this isn't a problem (and isn't in mpv either).

I know that it's because bestvideo+bestaudio are to seperate streams, but in theory this isn't a problem (and isn't in mpv either).
But you don't manually do that in mpv, do you? It probably opens youtube-dl twice or something like that.
With manual piping in Windows it's difficult to do two pipes and I doubt youtube-dl can interleave/mux live. So no luck with the separate streams if you use it in this way.

It is better to just extract streams with youtube-dl and open directly in MPC-HC. I have script which does that for me. Frankly integration with youtube-dl is not a problem but distributing youtube-dl is. But anyway gui for stream selection can be done fairly easy.

Hi, been using MPC-HC for a long time, with the latest version finally you incorporated the ability to search from multiple subtitle websites (I was using a previous version in beta, I think that had that ability). Anyway, I have "download subtitles automatically" checked and for weeks now it has worked perfectly, open a movie, MPC searches for and find subtitles and automatically uses the first one, without the subtitle box popping up.
However for the last few days, instead of the subtitles downloading and playing, the box pops up all the time for me to choose which one to use.
Do you have any idea why this has happened, and if there is a fix for it??

ASS/SSA rendering in UHD is kind of unthinkable with the ISR or XY vsfilter.
maybe it is more efficient to use libass for subtitle rendering.
it a big change but MPC HC is benefiting from the stead development of libass in the long run.

v1.7.11.24 (https://nightly.mpc-hc.org/old/1.7.11/1.7.11.24/) appears to be latest version that works on my WinXP pc.

With this command youtube-dl pipes 'bestvideo' AND 'bestaudio' to mpc-hc. Afaik you can only pipe one stream at a time in Windows, so this would never work.
For this video 'bestvideo' and 'bestaudio' correspond to:
youtube-dl.exe -F aqz-KE-bpKQ
format code extension resolution note
258 m4a audio only DASH audio 387k , m4a_dash container, mp4a.40.2, 29.15MiB
315 webm 3840x2160 2160p60 28416k , vp9, 60fps, video only, 1.63GiB
The only streams you can pipe with this command are the non-DASH/progressive videostreams:
youtube-dl.exe -F aqz-KE-bpKQ
format code extension resolution note
17 3gp 176x144 small , mp4v.20.3, mp4a.40.2@ 24k
36 3gp 320x180 small , mp4v.20.3, mp4a.40.2
43 webm 640x360 medium , vp8.0, vorbis@128k
18 mp4 640x360 medium , avc1.42001E, mp4a.40.2@ 96k
22 mp4 1280x720 hd720 , avc1.64001F, mp4a.40.2@192k (best)
youtube-dl.exe -f best -o - aqz-KE-bpKQ | mpc-hc.exe - /close
It is possible to pipe 'bestvideo' and 'bestaudio' to MPC-HC, but you'd have to merge them first... with FFmpeg:
FOR /F %A IN ('youtube-dl.exe -gf bestvideo aqz-KE-bpKQ') DO (
FOR /F %B IN ('youtube-dl.exe -gf bestaudio aqz-KE-bpKQ') DO (
ffmpeg.exe -i %A -i %B -c copy -f nut - | mpc-hc.exe - /close
)
)
The downside to piping is that you can't timeseek. But you don't have to pipe, because MPC-HC can load additional audiostreams:
FOR /F %A IN ('youtube-dl.exe -gf bestvideo aqz-KE-bpKQ') DO (
FOR /F %B IN ('youtube-dl.exe -gf bestaudio aqz-KE-bpKQ') DO (
mpc-hc.exe %A /dub %B
)
)
And this is exactly what 3DYD Youtube Source (http://ys.3dyd.com/) does. You'd be much better off using this DirectShow filter to open Youtube videos!
------
A question to the MPC-HC devs on my part:
mpc-hc /?
/dub "dubname" Load an additional audio file
/sub "subname" Load an additional subtitle file
Eventhough it says "audio file", /dub also accepts an url (as I've just demonstrated).
/sub on the other hand does not. Could you, just like MPC-BE, have it accept subtitle urls as well?!
But then I guess it won't do me any good, because new versions won't work on my WinXP pc...
