The new build works great for me so far. Successfully decodes HEVC. Search (time skipping) became very responsive too. Thanks a lot!

I'm still having an issue with enabling AC-3 in the built-in LAV decoders, even with the 11/4 release. Messes up frame step. Anybody got any ideas?

Tried. Neither that nor the latest build with updated LAV cured my framestep jerkiness.

Its a player problem. I don't support MPC-HC, it has its own developers.
Its very well possible that the audio renderer doesn't support frame-stepping with bitstreaming, and tbh, i wouldn't care anyway, turn off bitstreaming if you want frame stepping, problem solved.

The decoder doesnt really do anything during frame stepping anyway, its completely controlled by the player and the renderers.

It appears that using FFDShow instead of LAV for the audio seems to cure it, at least on a test system I have. I haven't tried it on my real HTPC, and will be out of town this weekend. When I get back I'll set it up on the HTPC and verify. I just wanted to avoid the whole external filter thing in MPC-HC, and thought the built in LAV would be a nice clean solution. Note, going into detailed controls to turn off the bitstreaming would be a pretty annoying fix if I just want to back up and frame step for a few secs. And with bitstreaming turned off, regular playing gets downconverted to PCM stereo. Ick.

Someone asked for a sample: pretty much any MKV with AC3 audio shows it. For example, I've got Star Trek Into Darkness ripped from bluray and Orphan Black Season 1 ripped from DVD... both show the issue.

I'll see about taking this up with the MPC-HC folks. Perhaps there's something they can do.

I have run into a strange trouble while playing a DVD that contains subtitles. If I enable ffdshow raw video filter the subtitles aren't being shown. If I disable it they are being shown. Other DVDs with subtitles play fine. Has anybody run into something similar? Is it a bug of MPC-HC or ffdshow?

I have a feature request for MPC-HC. Nothing vital, but one which might make life a little easier.

Currently when using the skip buttons to skip to the next/previous file in a folder, MPC-HC skips to the next supported file type. Would it be possible to have the skip function only skip to the next associated file type instead? ie if I've got MKVs associated with MPC-HC but MP3s associated with another program (as an example) I'd like the skip function to ignore the MP3s.
Irfanview is a image viewing program with an option to load only associated file types in a directory when opening images sequentially, so I guess it's possible to do.

After almost 1 and a half months since our last stable build, we decided to release v1.7.1.

This release is mostly a bugfix release, with a few new features.

Highlights of this release:


Support for HEVC and VP9
Fixed MPC-HC crashing on startup on >= Windows 8. Broken codecs installed on the system tend to crash the player on startup.
Now this crash will only happen if/when you enter capture mode. One common cause is ffdshow x64. Check if you have it installed and uninstall it.
Many LAV Filters fixes including a crash on AMD cards with DXVA when stopping playback
Fixed subtitle selection settings of the internal LAV splitter
British (English) and Slovenian localization

Thanks to the advanced LAV filters, it utilizes a Phenom-II X6 1045T (2.7 GHz) with 35-40% (CRF 24 (http://www.mediafire.com/watch/j4ns99nu4k16yyp/tos_60s_hevc.crf24.mp4)) to 60-70% (CRF 12 (http://www.mediafire.com/watch/zb8tbcr5v2tu31z/tos_60s_hevc.mp4)) while playing a 1080p HEVC video (using madVR as renderer). Maybe – yet – slower than the Strongene decoder filter, but with less installation hazzle. Great product!

The HEVC decoder is basically not optimized at all yet. There is still loads of performance potential, my guess is that it might end up faster then H264 due to some architectural improvements.
Of course it also has to become quite a bit faster if we want to use it for 4K content, where it right now is still much too slow.

To be more specific: the compatibility issue is only with the VFW interface of ffdshow. The DirectShow filter works fine. The latest version of ffdshow (r4525 x64 (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/SVN%20builds%20by%20clsid/64-bit%20builds/ffdshow_rev4525_20131117_clsid_x64.exe/download)) can be used safely in combination with MPC-HC, as it no longer installs the VFW interface on Win8 x64.

What sub selection issues were there with LAV? I have been testing things to optimize sub selection on my system and wonder what changes I may notice.

FWIW I've been using nightly builds lately so maybe my tests were on a build with this change already committed...

Not much of anything really, because of the nature of the development you're perfectly safe for the most part using nightlies.

- When running on Windows XP, its recommended to turn the "Use HQ DXVA processing" setting off, its not fully supported on XP and might cause image corruption.

Is this still true? If so, this option should be greyed out/disabled on XP systems (so users can't enable it)!

I wanted to use ISR for external subtitles while still being able to use XySubFilter with EVR-CP for embedded subtitles (i.e. enabling "Ignore embedded subtitles") to get the best of both worlds until Armada implements external subtitle support.

Since it would not make sense to ask you guys to change it upstream, at first I thought about periodically compiling MPC-HC without the change (https://github.com/mpc-hc/mpc-hc/commit/4ab7bb79e0f0803d5a093418d21ec57b4fb500ab) that blocks it from loading with ISR, but that takes too long on my machine.

So after wrestling for a long time with the compilation of XySubFilter v3.1.0.546 in VS2012 with WinSDK 8.0, I managed to compile a version that uses a different CLSID, bypassing the block and still being able to use the nightly builds.

Anyway, enough with the babbling, I'm posting it here for anyone who wants. The readme explains things better.

Make sure you are using EVR-CP as video renderer (VMR9 works too). You also need to block "DirectVobSub(auto loading)" in external filters, as you can't use vsfilter and xySubfilter at the same time.
