It means your GPU memory is too small. I believe huhn already explained why and what you can do:

The UI is fine as is.
I use MPC-HC to view video on my TV and from normal viewing distance using a wireless mouse. It's fairly impractical for much more then pause/resume and skip, and even that's largely due to the toolbar bitmap support which at least can be used to increase the size of the toolbar buttons a bit.
One advantage of using a mouse is the ability to quickly navigate to any place in the video, but that's somewhat negated by the size of the navigation bar at normal viewing distance. Panning and scanning is much easier and more versatile than it would be using a hardware player, and I much prefer to use a mouse for navigating than a remote, but aside from that the media player in my TV beats MPC-HC for navigating in most respects. I can press a button and see details about the video I'm watching and the current position etc, and unlike MPC-HC's on screen display, it displays useful information and it's easy to read from the other side of the room. I can enter a time to navigate to via the remote. Can you use MPC-HC's Navigate/GoTo menu from 10 feet away? To open a video with my TV's media player I don't have to move close to the screen because it's browser displays file names at a decent size.

I'm using Dualshock 4 as remote, I have mappings for PgUp / PgDn (chapters rock) and Alt with arrows (large jump is set to 90s).
Personally, with how fast seeking is I don't feel a need for using GoTo option.
UI is fine for PC. UI for TV has to be completely separate from PC UI, and it has to be built from scratch. Maybe as a fork, even, to avoid breaking PC stuff.

IMO using the mouse interface for viewing video from normal viewing distance is sub-optimal for any media player.
Much better to use a remote tailored to the player. I use www.vectir.com (http://www.vectir.com) to great effect for MPC-HC control and navigation. The beauty of remotes like Vectir is that you can completely customise its UI and behaviour to your preferred operations and configured player shortcut keys.

If you have an android device (simple phone), try out this one: Remoti.co (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kdombrovsky.mpcremote)
There are several more, but I found this one the most reliable and usable for a long term. I even modded it, I wrote a comment about it in this thread around a year ago.

Thank you for your help.
That's not so evident. I'll have to investigate in order to find which feature is causing this behaviour.

The two smaller files only contain audio and use some features that are not yet supported by ffmpeg.
In general mxf files should play just fine with MPC-HC. But since this is a professional format for video editing, it is unlikely that you will encounter them as an end-user.

Sure (uploaded from my latest MyBackup backup): mpc-rc_5.1_mod-1.0.apk (https://www.dropbox.com/s/wwmsvbt4fc3qlw8/mpc-rc_5.1_mod-1.0.apk?dl=0)
And here's my old post (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1735591#post1735591) about it (including the change log).
Known issues:
- if favorite folders are selected, sometimes app crashes: if you run (start) the app again, this feature will work well afterwards
Note:
- I won't add any new feature to the app (it was a pain in the ass to mod it without the source code :) )
- if you like the app then support the original dev, Kostia :)
I'm also using this app for about 5 years, almost every day! :) It includes every necessary feature that I need. With this and the amazing mpc-hc/mpc-be, I don't need any other 3rd party frontend to play stuff from the couch: simplicity always! :)

If Website Watcher is still the only service which has trouble, maybe it is recommendable to look for an alternative (http://alternativeto.net/software/websitewatcher/) service to get notified about new versions. But IMHO, "one of the most insecure and incompatible browsers" should not be used anymore, anyway...

That is strange, it should be support both (at least the major features). Try out the one I linked above: apart from subtitle delay buttons and couple of after-playback options (they have different key IDs in hc vs be) all works fine with mpc-be as well.

The problem is I use Kodi and MPC and the universal remote I use has a remote for Kodi. I also have a program called remote extender that lets the kodi remote work for mpc-hc which it works great but it doesn't work for BE.

Kinda weird thing to say for a project has updates and work and custom-built LAVFilters in July.
No it doesn't see daily updates or something, but since it's pretty mature I see no reason for more updates. First player to work with MadVR and it's HDR functions I believe :).

Not likely anytime soon, if ever. What do you expect that to deliver that the d3d9-based DXVA2 currently available does not?
It supports all the same codecs and uses the same hardware, after all.

I thought it was just the evolution of dxva2. No? I am not an expert at all.
A kodi dev said it was much safer and doesn't mess colors but it still round down 10 bits to 8 bits unlike cuda. However kodi doesn't work with dx9 only GPUs, you need one that supports dx11!

If you want full color retention then use DXVA2 Copy-Back with madVR, it supports a full 10-bit path with no losses.
Using a renderer like EVR will always mess with things more, since some of its parts are delegated to the video drivers, and what they do is up to them - no matter if its done through D3D9 or D3D11.
foozoor

I learned to not use hardware decoding because it's always safer. It was to know your opinion on it now because things evolve and x265/10bits/4k-8k/60fps video files will emerge sooner than we think. ;)
nevcairiel
17th October 2016, 20:33
DXVA2 decoding by itself does not modify the image, I have confirmed several times that Copy-Back decoding is perfectly bit-accurate to software decoders. HW decoding can sometimes produce other problems, like instability of the hardware or whatnot, but with 4K HEVC you don't have much of a choice with todays decoders and CPUs. :)
Ultimately its then up to the video renderer to try to handle the image as precise as it can. Something EVR often fails at, but madVR usually does fine.

The last time I used EVR I was still on WinXP and it was maybe in 2007. Almost one decade! MadVR master race!

proper GPU decoding isn't done using shaders so it doesn't harm performance.
AMD GPU had a problem with copyback performance loss using DXVA.
nvidia native DXVA results in degraded picture quality.
if your CPU isn't the fastest i would use DXVA decoding.
i personally avoid hardware decoding as much as possible. but using DXVA copy back should be totally fine.

But it still warmes up the GPU and may therefore cause high fan noise, doesn't it?

a proper hardware decoder doesn't heat up the cards.
it's so little power you can ignore this.
if i'm not mistaken intel GPU are showing GPU usage so may heat up the "GPU" with DXVA but AMD and nvidia did do that.

Does software decoding warm up the CPU greater than hardware decoding does the GPU?

Intel's iGPUs use only the hardware fixed-fuction decoder for playback and they don't use at all GPU shaders for decoding since Sandybridge.
GPU is used for encoding and VPP filtering (scaling, deinterlacing etc)

just tested it is the DXVA scaling that eats the iGPU not decoding.
in comparison the the DXVA scaler in AMD and NVIDIA cards is kind of free (and bad...).

19th October 2016, 08:27
Strange, I thought the DXVA scaler in Intel GPUs was hard wired. I'm pretty sure that was the case in older GPU generations, at least. Maybe it changed in newer generations. I think it's the opposite with AMD. Older generations used pixel shaders, I think, while the latest generation has hard wired circuits for DXVA scaling, I think. Not fully sure about any of this, though...

i checked it with an old HD4000 i got around 40% GPU usage in DXVA native and over 50% with copyback when testing content in DXVA checker.
test file was VC-1 1080p speed ~110 FPS. support for VC-1 is new to me too. i know quick sync can do it.
as far as i know DXVA checker is using EVR which is using DXVA scaling.
i didn't remove the main GPU so it is not a proper test.
other strange things i notice.
MPC-HC build 1.7.10
HD 4000
VC-1
EVR DXVA native = fine
EVR DXVA CB = fine
EVR CP DXVA native = black screen
EVR CP DXVA CB direct = black screen
madVR DXVA native = fine
madVR DXVA CB = fine
this is very strange to me...

If the MOV format is handled by QuickTime, lavformats won't handle the container anymore and can't forward the content to the libavcodec decoders. So first check which splitter is used.
