New driver. No idea what's new. Installing now. Will see if they updated the HDMI driver or not.

Until now your driver looks good because it accepted the true hd media type.

I must solve this hanging problem on FFDShow, I don't know why this occur (this is caused by the graph reconnection)

SamuriHL

There is indeed a new HDMI driver included with this latest package. It's 5.0.7000.09 which is even newer than the driver the reviewers were using to bitstream with. I reran the code and got the same results which is expected. Went back to the previous version and got the same results that we previously got with that, so, it doesn't look like the new driver breaks anything.

Ok, I just bought the 5770 and after putting it into my PC I grabed the 13/10/2009 driver from the ATI site. (link that you posted earlier Samuri). I still don t know EXACTLY what to do/config my system to help with testing and I would like you to help me out. First off all: ffdshow => So I just install the latest beta of ffdshow, but what about the settings. HOW do I configure it exactly? First there is the CODECS section. WHICH do I enable here and WHAT codec do I use? (libavcodec for all?). Next there s the output section of FFdshow: Do I tick ALL pass-through boxes? (DD,DTS,DTS-MA,TRUE-HD). Then we have the supported outputs section: do I check all four there? (16,24,32 and float). After this there are the last 3 checkboxes. Which do I check and which one do I UNcheck?

After this there is the MpcAudioRendererFilter.ax and another splitter filter or something included in the download. Do I regsvr32 them both? And after this just add them as External filters in MPC-HC?

And what about Haali Media Splitter. Can this still be used? (I need it for subtitles).

What about the OUTPUT section of MPC-HC? I assume that I cannot use Reclock but what do I check there? ATI HDMI, direct sound: ATI HDMI etc.

Maybe there are more settings I need to change. If so, please tell me.

Thanks!

I don't think so. It's just a new driver for the 5xxx cards. It doesn't say RC so I don't know what to make of that, tbh.

Yes, for AC3, TrueHD, DTS set it to libavcodec.

Next there s the output section of FFdshow: Do I tick ALL pass-through boxes? (DD,DTS,DTS-MA,TRUE-HD).

Yes.

Then we have the supported outputs section: do I check all four there? (16,24,32 and float). After this there are the last 3 checkboxes. Which do I check and which one do I UNcheck?

Leave just 16 and you should be fine.

After this there is the MpcAudioRendererFilter.ax and another splitter filter or something included in the download. Do I regsvr32 them both? And after this just add them as External filters in MPC-HC?

Yes, that's right. You may have to browse for the ax file in the external filters selection box. Then set it to prefer. Add the ffdshow audio decoder, as well. Also set to prefer.

And what about Haali Media Splitter. Can this still be used? (I need it for subtitles).

No idea. I don't have it installed.

What about the OUTPUT section of MPC-HC? I assume that I cannot use Reclock but what do I check there? ATI HDMI, direct sound: ATI HDMI etc.

I leave both ffdshow and mpc-hc set to system default.

Also, just an FYI. This setup royally screws up my system. When I have ffdshow and the renderer installed, some of my games no longer load. What I'm finding is that it's screwing up their ability to play their opening video sequence and instead I just get a black screen and it just sits there. Once I remove ffdshow and the renderer it's all good with the games. But this is a pain.

I don't mess with CCC for games. I leave everything set to "application specific" and set up each game individually.

ok, I ask this because today Ive read on the ATI forum that you get the best gaming quality by puttings V-Sync to always OFF and ENable tripple buffering.

Possibly. Depends on the game. Anyway, if you want to discuss this topic further just PM me. :)

I know its off topic again, but if your graphics card is relatively fast, I think you will be happier with v-sync forced to be always on. Just means your not going to get tearing when you have it on. Tearing in games will be much more noticible than when watching movies because your probably going to be seeing higher frame rates.

Better to see 30/45/60 perfect full frames, than a zillion slices and bits of frames.

I always force vsync on.

SamuriHL
16th October 2009, 15:03
Yea, I leave it on with the 5870. No tearing.

Again Off-topic :) See this thread where they recommend to turn OFF vsync for gaming but ENable tripple buffering.

btw. I thought that Vsync also has impact in some way to HTPC usage, is that correct? I always thought that for HTPC use it was best to turn V-sync to always OFF for HTPC usage.

That's why I set my 5870 to application specific settings so you can set it per application. :)

Back on topic, albain, any progress on the ffdshow bug?

albain
16th October 2009, 15:53
Some news !

Here is a new couple of builds of FFDShow and MPC Audio Renderer

I have managed to send the new media type without reconnecting.

It seems to work, of course it works only on AC3 SPDIF on my config.

FFDShow bitstream HD beta 23 (http://www.mediafire.com/file/zj2ldoym4de/FFDShow_bitstream_beta23_pack.zip)

Please uncheck the "Use new IEC structure" because there is a bug in DirectShow baseclasses.

Setup
1/ Install FFDShow from the pack and register MPCAudioRenderer.ax
To do so, open a DOS windows in ADMIN mode
and type :
regsvr32 /s /u MPCAudioRenderer.ax
regsvr32 /s MPCAudioRenderer.ax
2/ Same thing with the MPC source splitter provided (unless you already have it)
3/ In FFDShow audio configuration, check AC3, Dolby TrueHD, EAC3, DTS-HD in bitstream

Test to be made
Before, launch DBGView to have the traces in case it won't work

1/ Open graph studio
2/ Add the MPC source/splitter and select a TrueHD m2ts file
3/ Add FFDShow
4/ Add Renderer > MPC Audio renderer
5/ Drag the out pin from the splitter to the input pin of FFDShow audio
6/ Drag the out pin from FFDShow audio to the input pin of MPC Audio Renderer
7/ Play the graph

Yup. I was very excited when I saw the TrueHD light come on. Now if albain can figure out why there's no audio and fix that up, we'll be in good shape. I'm very pleased.

Don't be too excited too soon.

We can say now that the stream is sent correctly to the receiver, and this means that HD bitstream works without the Protected Audio Path

However 3 things :
1/ For sure the stream is not formatted correctly : the buffer size may not be correct, the data after the header may not be filled correctly... I don't have any idea for now on the exact cause
2/ FFDShow that would hand after 18 seconds : this is not normal
If you can recover some traces just before to understand what happened
3/ There are probably too many debug traces that slow down the decoding too much. I will remove some in the next build

I will share my patch and will ask some help around (Madshi and other audio specialists)

don't mean to be a PITA...but why not making a separate thread for bitstream debugging :o

and anyone knows who/where I should ask to have libavcodec decoding DTS in 32float instead of 16int? it sounds VERY good, but DTS seems to be ±19bit....why trimming it to 16? libdts decodes in 32float..

I've looked on the ffmpeg site/irc channel, but discussing about ffdshow or libavcodec doesn't seem to be allowed?! 'Welcome to the FFmpeg development channel. That is, development of FFmpeg, not using FFmpeg, nor libav*.'

albain

@SamuriHL Have you tried EAC3 ?

About truehd, I think that the problem comes from the buffer feeding because frames are about 100 bytes whereas AC3 frames are 1536 bytes long

TrueHD frames are composed by a major frame and sub frames, maybe this is it

SamuriHL
16th October 2009, 22:23
I haven't, but, I can. I'll try it out in a few minutes.

SamuriHL

I grabbed the eac3 file you have up there and tried to play it in MPC-HC, but, it seems to want to decode it to LPCM? I'm not sure what I'm missing there.

@albain - The latest version of the audio renderer breaks the AC3 bitstreaming again (reverting to the prior version fixes it).

@SamuriHL - If you get a chance, can you test the latest ffdshow version with the version of the renderer packed with beta 20 (on the off chance that the issues are related).

humm, I've tried to signup on the users mailing list...but nothing happened. I'll try from another email adress.

I went to the users IRC channel and some h264 encoding geeks told me "patches welcome"...I so much don't see 32float DTS decoding happening in libavcodec :D

libdts does it, but SQ is terrible..

well, liba52 is 32float too..and it sounds REALLY good.

if I ever manage to get on the user mailing list, I'll ask...hopefully talking about libavcodec and ffdshow is not forbidden there, as it seems to be the case on the irc dev channel.

I have fixed the buffer filling issue. It should be better

I hope that AC3 passthrough is fixed : if it is, EAC3 bitstream should work too, and I hope that TrueHD will work

I have also removed some debug traces and after 2~3 seconds of play there no more debug traces

FFDShow HD bitstream beta 24 pack (http://damienbt.free.fr/FFDShow_bitstream_beta24_pack.zip)

About the 32 bits float on ffmpeg, there is a new method to be called and to implement inside FFDShow. xxl told me about that, that will let add the wma pro support and maybe this will add 32 bits support too, but I fear that this is a decoder only issue and features request must be posted on the ffmpeg mailing list as clsid pointed out

Much better, all done now thanks. I asked earlier in the thread if the Xonar would be supported in this bitstream test, but got no reply so I went ahead and tried beta 23 and 24 on my slim card, and I just get PCM, but it plays.

Here's the log if it's any use to you. If not, and you are only focussing on the ATI series let me know, and I'll not add other logs that are of no use to you.

Well, xonar is a nogo for now :
CMpcAudioRenderer::InitAudioClient not supported (88890008)

I guess that the format tag is different than MS offical ones.
But as bitstream can work with the xonar with TMT 3, it communicates with other media types/format tags.

I doubt asus or arcsoft will communicate this information. However we can try the arcsoft media types that rica got a while ago

Otherwise there is another technique that Madshi pointed me about
