Hi again,
another build for our patient testers.
The IEC structure is nearly fully correct.
Normally, these tests should work on Windows 7 with IEC structure enabled and one last radeon 5xxx.
Tested it on the 4670 with TrueHD and got the following error:
The renderer accepted the change of media type but failed with the reconnection
It then dropped back to decode mode. Hopefully SHL will have better luck with the 58xx.

Nope. It sets the receiver to PCM but I get no sound. I removed a bunch of jitter correction messages, but here's a log:

Yes this is a step forward.
Most parts of the IEC encapsulation is covered, there is just the beginning where I need updates but I am expecting them soon thanks to one of you :-)

FYI, DTS-HD MA is still being dropped down to core. So, not the same result there. Not sure what's up with that one.

Hi,
2 new builds with media types changed from PCM to the official microsoft ones. I am now pretty sure that the implementation is correct.
FFDShow beta 10 with reconnection (http://damienbt.free.fr/ffdshow_rev3089_20091001_dbt_beta10.exe)
FFDShow beta 10 without reconnection (http://damienbt.free.fr/ffdshow_rev3089_20091001_dbt_beta10_noreconnect.exe)
These builds respect the microsoft iec implementation so it should work on windows 7 with a radeon 5xxx.
You should not use reclock because it won't accept the compressed media types (only PCM is accepted and I guess this is the non working cause on vista).
I don't know how difficult this is to develop a wasapi audio renderer if someone as sample code it will be interesting to implement one.
If this still does not work, there are 4 possible causes :
- radeon 5xxx drivers are not ready or not using microsoft IEC recommendations
- the HDMI audio endpoint for bitstream is not the same and hidden
- a custom audio renderer is necessary
- still some issues with the implemenation : media types, format tags, ...
So for now let's focus on windows 7 standards, and then we will digg vista/xp implementation

thumbs up for your hard work! Agree totally to work on W7 implementation first cause this is going to be THE standard OS for HTPC-land if you ask me.
How about ATI 4XXX-serie users (like me :)).
Any thoughts if bitstreaming is possible with the beta10 version?

and another question a little off-topic :))
When I play a .wmv file that has wma3 as audio I cant get it decoded by ffdshow some way. I tried ALL the codecs in the codecs section of ffdshow but nothing lets ffdshow load. Can this be decoded by ffdshow and if yes, how to?

I grabbed that and tried it. Same issue. MPC-HC just simply crashes immediately. Not much I can do with this version I'm afraid.

Trying it with a DTS-HD MA track, it's not trying to bitstream and does not crash. I just get badly decoded DTS core output over what it says is S/PDIF.

So it wasn't quite as immediately as I thought. I seriously hope this helps. No, I didn't use anything other than the setup I've been using for all these tests. I try to keep things simplified. WMP didn't seem to want to use ffdshow at all when trying to play the TrueHD clip, so, that wasn't helpful. I don't know enough about it to force the issue on that one.

Please select PCM mode first in ffdshow and show us the graph behind MPC-HC.
Open MPC-HC; play > pause
Open GraphStudio; under menu > file > connect to remote graph.

I don't think that'll be overly useful here. What appears to be happening is that it's not recognizing it as a TrueHD track and is attempting to bitstream it as AC3 over S/PDIF. If you look at the trace log I attached up there, you'll see that it's treating it as AC3. The previous builds did not do that so something's definitely wrong.

I can tell you I'm not the one to be trying to do that graph thing. :) I have very limited knowledge of that stuff. I made a graph for my HD PVR following very specific instructions, but that's about it.

When I play a .wmv file that has wma3 as audio I cant get it decoded by ffdshow some way. I tried ALL the codecs in the codecs section of ffdshow but nothing lets ffdshow load. Can this be decoded by ffdshow and if yes, how to?

If ffdshow doesn't load then it doesn't support the format.
And before you ask. If you want it to get added follow the following steps:
1) Open a feature request at the SourceForge project page
2) Include a sample file
3) Wait*
* This step may take forever. Certainly if it is a wma3 variant that is not yet supported by FFmpeg.

Clearly the build with no reconnection is not a go and makes the player crash.
In order to test with wmp, you have to install haali media splitter. It should work on m2ts files embedding TrueHD streams.
Under windows 7 an extra step is necessary to make ffdshow load : you can use clsid's tool from the following link (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=146910)
After that, you have to make sure that ffdshow is configured as follow :
- For AC3/DTS : select libavcodec or libdts/liba52 (but a codec must be selected)
- For TrueHD, DTSHD : select libavcodec
- In output section, check all the bitstream/spdif formats.
- Still in output section : check 16 24 and 32 bits (just in case) and AC3
It should work with those

Well, they were both making the player crash. I tried both of them. I'll try this WMP thing but I'm not too hopeful since the only thing I had changed in my setup was the ffdshow build. Going back to the previous build prevents the crashing.

I followed all the instructions to get ffdshow to work. Yea, I'm going with no on this one. ffdshow does NOT load with WMP. I have haali set up, I used the tool to change the default filters to ffdshow. Nada.

The reconnection version also crashes MPC-HC. So, unless you have any other ideas I'm done testing this build. It's definitely not working for me.

For now, I am a little stuck, I have posted to MSDN, AMD and Slysoft forums in order to :
From MS: Have confirmation that WMP 12 in windows 7 is out of the box able to handle HD audio bitstream correctly if IEC implementation is resepected
From AMD : have details about the right implementation of HD audio bitstream. Use Microsoft IEC guidelines or is there a home made implementation ? Also, how to make it work on "older" OS (Vista, XP) and on 4xxx series
From Slysoft : asked James to add non PCM (compressed) media types in the accepted list to Reclock
Meanwhile, I will try to search how commercial player do to send HD bitstream

Otherwise it would be great that you add support for WAVEFORMEXTENSIBLE_IEC61937 structure : the goal is to detect it (versus WAVEFORMEXTENSIBLE or WAVEFORMEXT) and pass it to the audio driver with no modification

I tested by building the graph manually in GraphStudio with both the MPC splitter and the ArcSoft demux. GraphStudio crashes with both of them.
