This is super confusing. When did we start referring to the revisions with beta numbers too? The official tryouts have beta numbersI don't see the problem. You can only access these experimental versions if you read this thread and follow the links. And if you read the thread you know what they are for.

In any case, is ffdshow correct in outputting 5.1 surrounds to Back L and Back R rather than side L and side R (like is suggested as the equivalent of the "surround" in the dolby documentation you linked to "Left Surround, Right Surround, Left Back, and Right Back")? Thanks for all the input on this. I just feel for 5.1, ffdshow should be outputting the surround outputs to the Sides, not the Backs, going by dolbys page.

It would be nice to have an option to switch it.


What I have done, for video, is leave the ffdshow mixer disabled, and therefore the Xonar upmixes 5.1 to 7.1.

For audio I add the Audio Processor and use it to set the channels to 7.1, meaning that stereo doesn't get upmixed.

Bug Report:
Recent FFDShow builds have the FLV video bug again (where the video isn't cropped properly). This was already fixed in a previous build and now the problem is back.

The fixed was reverted because it caused other (bigger) problems.

Does TotalMedia Theatre or PowerDVD or... play the channels different (the way you "feel" it should) than FFDShow or MPC-HC for you ?

Hi, news from HD bitstream

There were... many bugs in FFDShow

Here is the new link (http://damienbt.free.fr/FFDShow_beta15_pack.zip)

This is a package with an updated version of MPC-HC and the renderer and 2 versions of FFDShow

I don't know if this will work with MPC-HC, so please test also with the MPC source filter in graphstudio.

Halftime's coming up so I'll give it a shot in a few minutes with MPC-HC. Not likely to try the graph thing though as I just don't have the time for lots of testing at the moment. But I can run through and get you some logs and see what happens.

Just no. I give up. My machine is just NOT playing nicely. It IMMEDIATELY crashes MPC as always for me. It will NOT allow me to connect the MPC Audio Renderer to the ffdshow audio decoder in graphstudio. So, I'm not able to test this at all.

No, I can't install any debuggers on that machine else it'll break TMT. Their protection is SO sensitive that it won't run with VS installed. :mad:

That line suggests you are using build 1.1.666 of mpc-hc, which is over a year old.

It's a C2Q 8200 with 4 gigs of ram. If I shut off the pass through and have ffdshow decode the TrueHD instead of trying to pass it through, then it's all good and the track plays with no errors. As soon as I enable TrueHD pass through, KABOOM! So, I don't think it's MPC or my system, exactly. But something with the new ffdshow beta when it's trying to bitstream just blows it up badly.

I think you are right.

FFdshow is reading or writing to a point in memory that it does not have access to, causing the OS to block it and crash the application.

Didn't help. I tried running it in admin mode and Vista SP1 compat mode. Neither made any difference. Thought maybe UAC might be blocking it but it doesn't seem like it. I honestly don't know what to do here. But, it can decode just fine. It simply refuses to do pass through which is frustrating.

It appears to be a problem with the latest ATI HDMI driver. I switched to the realtek driver and it's now decoding to LPCM even when pass through is selected. (My guess is the ffdshow code isn't compatible with the realtek driver maybe?)

No, this means that the realtek driver won't accept truehd bitstream so in that case FFDShow will revert to TrueHD decoding and outputting LPCM

About the MPCHC build that I supplied, it is not correctly tagged but this is built from the last subversion revision

And yes, the crash occurs inside FFDShow.
Even if I build ffsdhow in debug mode, you won't have the stack trace.

So I have to digg this around and maybe add some PRINTFs

Anyway, this sounds good : the wasapi driver is able to accept (or not) HD audio formats. I feared that it was blind but this is not the case

I have my little idea about where it crashes : probably in the buffer feeding where I build IEC frames. This is the only part that differs.

This took me a while to understand but the new Microsoft iec structure only add new fields in order to infer the quality of the compressed stream.
However the updated encapsulation format is very important and it has been applied for EAC3 truehd and dtshd. Some more may come after : aac wma pro for example

So I dont think this setting changes anything and it is certainly not responsible of the crashes.

Ok. That makes sense. Just wanted to make sure just in case. I'll test out the new build when it's ready and get you some debugging info. I wish TMT wasn't so sensitive about having a debugger installed cause I could definitely get you more info that way. I just don't want to risk breaking anything on that machine right now.

I've finally managed to find the time to make this patch:
this patch makes the OSD settings to be based on ffdshow presets, and make the "OSD presets" obsolete.
this patch makes everything regarding the OSD more simple and more powerful,

from the user perspective:
you don't have to manage two sets of presets.
you can harness the power of FFDshow presets: the OSD can be turned on / off based on the selected preset, just like the rest of the filters.
(no more encoding with the OSD turned on :))

from the developer perspective:
a lot of OSD related code have been removed from the core / global parts of ffdshow.
making the OSD work just like the rest of the filters keeps things simple.

I feel like this patch sells itself, so I won't elaborate further.

three open issues:
1. there are two "general purpose" OSD methods: shortOSDmessage(msg,duration) and drawOSD(x,y,msg),
drawOSD is mostly used by ffdshowRemoteAPI, and it's not robust, because if not used right, it can make OSD text overlap,

for now, I did not implemented drawOSD, but opted to ignore x and y and call shortOSDmessage instead,
I suggest we make drawOSD obsolete, it's not very useful, and having a single method would be cleaner.

2. I'm not sure what the toggle OSD keyboard shortcut (default: ctrl + alt + O) supposed to do, AFAIK it does nothing today, is it an old bug? or am I missing something?

3. I didn't implement any upgarde routine yet, so upgrade will usually result in early OSD order in the filter chain. (default after complete re-install is near the end)

Still no sound from these latest builds with any compressed format AC3, TrueHD, EAC3 are all silent and my receiver doesn't recognize any of them as bitstreams. The only change is now DD+ no longer crashed with Use IEC structure unchecked, though it still crashes immediately with it checked. I still have Graphstudio hang frequently regardless of what format I try to play.

2. I'm not an expert, but I remember that it's been discussed before, and I remember that it would require a complete ffdshow overhaul.

other key points:
- adding this amount of logic (preset auto-load settings) before input pin connection, would hurt applications that uses direct show in general, because many applications that will ultimately reject ffdshow, will now have to execute those instructions as well.
- when I modified the OSD, I had other filters as a reference, but that luxury will not be available with the codec settings.

there may be other cons I'm not aware of.

Great job, but please let the drawosd method active because I use it a lot in Media Control (my media center plugin).
I know that the OSD strings are not erased, but I have all the encapsulation methods to do that

I don't know, maybe

The audio driver may not accept non PCM types.
If this is just a matter of types, this is fixable (fake PCM type)

But this is the next step, first we have to make sure that the stream is correctly formatted and decoded by the HT receiver

I'm with you Mark.

5.1 audio should come out the sides on a 7.1 system, not the backs.

It would be nice to have an option to switch it.


Based on reading dolby's site, I agree, that "surround" in 5.1 should go to sides not back channels. Mark, I think in my case, my Xonar is also upmixing 5.1 to 7.1, but because apps like mpc-hc and ffdshow seem to send "surround" to the back rather than sides, the xonar is slightly mixing the right back to right side and slightly to left side. Same for left back, it gets sent like 90% to side left and 10% to side right.

This is why I believe I get channel bleeding.

I think the solution is for ASUS to stop upmixing by default (in which case I think I might not hear anything from surround channels in ffdshow and mpc-hcs current state), or at least have a way to disable the upmixing. ANNDD for mpc-hc and ffdshow to consider outputting "surround" channel in 5.1 sources to the side rather than back.

will that be acceptable? [in addition to shortOSDmessage(msg, duration) of course]

I'm assuming you don't need the ability to store the message indefinitely, am I right?
(I'm not comfortable with the current implementation of storing the text and position in the registry)

I'll test it in the next hour or two and get back to you. In the middle of a work crisis of sorts right now. :mad: But I'll definitely get rid of the realtek driver, put the ATI HDMI driver back, and then try this out and at least get you some debugging info.

That's the log from the latest run. Still crashes. Outputs a very nasty tone when running, though. :D Receiver shows Multi-channel PCM. I hope this helps get to the bottom of this. Thanks!
